The 6'9"/6'10" Native out of Finland, will play at First Love Academy in PA this season... Can play inside and out, definite NBA Prospect at some point.
Once colleges knew we was coming to the US to play, offers started to fly... We were his 2nd offer given out after Maryland... Then St. John's, BC, Okla St, Pitt, GT, K State, DePaul, NC State, Illinois, SMU, Marquette and Indiana followed... Yes, Archie offered last Thursday lol
A Holmes, Washington, Smith & Amzil class is just remarkable... What a job by AG and Crew!

CAG and staff taking full advantage of COY and POY status. Love the fact that he chose Dayton over Indiana and other P5 programs. Many thanks to UD basketball for providing a little joy during a brutal 2020!

So with the 2020 rules, he could even play as much/little as needed and still have 4 years of eligibility left starting next year. Noice.

Interesting the thing Amzil consistently mentioned was he wanted a school where he could play right away. So maybe January is right away.

Coach Khayree Wilson, of @Firstlove_hoops, said one reason Mustapha Amzil picked Dayton is the opportunity to play this year, in January. Dayton had one open scholarship, and he fills it.

Does this mean he is planning on actually suiting up this year (for second semester ball) and playing, or doing what Zimi did and just practice with the team to prepare for next year. Either way it is a great get. Congrats to staff and boy is it good to be a Flyer in the AG era!!

Zimi technically could have played in the 2nd semester if the staff wanted him to but the plan for him was to sit it out... We'll see what they do with Mustapha, I think he might play (especially with that extra year)

Opportunity to PLAY, not practice this year!
What I don’t know is he eligible at the end of 1st semester or becomes eligible at beginning of 2nd semester. I suspect it is the latter but not sure. Some kids play football at schools before semesters start at some West Coast conferences that still use quarters system.

If I remember correctly, I thought Dyshawn Pierre was eligible once first semester ended.

This has to be a dream. I am still rooting for Dayton, right? Little ole mid major Dayton. When we offered it seemed like a pipe dream. I am amazed and thrilled. I guess he becomes part of the 2020 recruiting class. If not we might be top 10.

With the 2020 rules in place, seems like UD will head into the 2021-22 season with as many as 10 players with 4 seasons of eligibility left.

Great handles for a big, passing, shooting form. Not much athleticism as far as vertical leap. If only we had some great athletes in the same recruiting class. Oh wait...

Having taught in a diverse community for 30 years and coming across a number of students with the same name, I agree with your pronunciation. However, Bucky can call him Moose and all will be well!

We are getting to the point where we are expecting signings like this. Scary. I have to wonder if he would have played high school ball this year if he would have moved to a 4 star. He sure has the look of one. We become more and more positionless. If you look at each of the forwards we have recruited, they can all handle the ball. I really see Washington seeing quite a bit of time at the 2 with Mustapha at the 3.

Notice with few exceptions AG likes albatross players with length. John Chaney recruited like this for decades and caused opponents fits. Different system but same thought process.

He’s 6-10, 215 with a frame that can handle more. Some analysts say he would have been a four-star in the next update of recruit rankings. Get this kid a few pounds and some strength and look out.

Welcome to the family Mustapha! You won't believe how loud the UD Arena gets with every home game! i liked the phone call when he said, "coach do you have room for one more?" and then it showed some of his different ways he can score the basketball. Then he said he signed the papers today.

I remember when Xavier got a commitment from Romaine Sato. People were like "Romaine who?" Once folks saw him play, the verdict was unanimous.

I think Amzil contributes this season. He's a mature player. He knows where he needs to be. He rebounds. He makes smart passes. He'll play good positional defense.
It's just a matter of picking up the system (on both sides). His size will help the cause, even if it's only for 5-10 minutes a night.

AG and the staff deserve a lot of credit. This class is above and beyond even the most wildly optimistic scenario.
I can't think of another class where every recruit coming had multiple power 5 offers

Biggest issue I see in his game is that he has some Derrick Zoolander in him and doesn't finish with his off hand in situations where the drive calls for a left handed layup. That is probably a common issue for young kids but something he's going to need to develop to help him be more efficient attacking the rim.

Really? I'd love to see a historical post where someone thought Obi was going to be the second coming. Or the "steal of the year" re: recruits.

Those of us who saw Romaine Sato play in high school knew who he was. UD tried to recruit him hard, but his decision was locked the day he arrived in the country to live with his X host family.

I have no problems going on record saying I wasn't excited when we signed Obi. He was a scrawny big without much of a jump shot. I just didn't see how he was going to contribute. Not strong enough to play down low - not skilled enough to play outside. It's amazing what a good attitude and hard work can accomplish.
And that's reason #1,096 why I'm not a college basketball coach.

I seem to recall kids like the class with Warren, Plummer, Bennett, etc being hot shots, while B-Rob was pretty much an average "nobody" too...

If you saw Obi at just one practice during his redshirt year, you would have changed your mind in a second. Even then, he was among the most athletic on the team. And, he showed his great hands and touch.

Wasn't the first spark that revealed "who Obi might be" a video of a summer workout where he was dunking against some former NBA players?

Sort of, but there were rumors swirling around from people that had seen practice or talked to people that had seen practice. Bucky told me he was a phenomenal athlete prior to those videos. I think many on here, lets say a week prior to those videos were pretty excited about the rumors that were swirling around and how good Obi just might be. What really threw us into a tizzy was how solid he looked against NBA players that the word that was leaking out from those training sessions.

That last line was the time I became very excited about Obi. Even though he did not start his freshman year, when he came in, you knew he was on the verge of something big. One other thing...yes, Obi was very talented and had a lot of raw athletic ability, but do not overlook the development from the Grant coaching team, including the strength coach.

Yeah, you kinda new something special was about to happen... after seeing him catch the ball on an alley-oop, and then windmill slamming it home (while playing with NBA caliber players)

Remember, Georgia offered him scholarship before UD made their offer. I believe Obi narrowed his choices to UD and Rhode Island
That was the first public demonstration was playing with NBA players the summer after his redshirt season.
I was impressed during his redshirt practices. One of the assistants told me me that summer that he made incredible strides during that offseason. He said "You have not seen anything yet!". Coaches knew they had a real gem that summer. And probably before...
From my vantage point, he was athletic and impressive when he stepped foot on campus. He need to add strength, but all freshman need that. He could jump, handle the ball and had soft hands. He was capable of playing then and would have seen considerable court time if he did not redshirt.
He worked his tail off to grow each season and offseason. His work ethic and talent is amazing.

C'mon, January!
Next month we might find out if Mustapha Amzil can contribute this season.
I hope he can shore up our bench play.

I see that Mustapha Amzil has his bio posted on the Dayton Flyer roster page. There is no picture. I see that Amzil is a year older than Brea.

Mustapha appears to be a very good outside shot, dribbles well and can pass. Probably not the guy to bring us much rebounding or mixing it up inside, but he will be an improvement running the offense over our current bigs. He will give us more of that Obi look up top catching, passing, screening and dribbling. Defensively he may get pushed around this year by many bigs, but wait till the UD trainers start to work on his body.

On the signing announcement video, coach Grant calls Mustapha Amzil. Amzil says, “coach, I got one question, you got room for one more?” He smiles.
Man I love that.

Here’s something I can get excited about...
“One thing I learned about Mustapha is he picks up everything so quick and so well,” Weaver said Monday. “He didn’t mess up in practice. We didn’t have to stop and teach him anything the whole day. Everything was so smooth. He learns fast, and he’s a good shooter.”
Maybe Amzil can contribute right away? That would be an very pleasant surprise.
