Should UD retire Obi's number?

Does UD have any retired numbers? If not, should Obi's be the first? I know with limited numbers it should be a rare honor, but if it's every going to happen, i'd say national player of the year and first team all American is a pretty good spot to do it.

My personal opinion is that they should wait a few years and have it unofficially off limits for anyone else to choose number 1, and then formally retire it and have it hanging from the rafters. I think Obi deserves it, and it would be a cool benchmark for our team.

I wouldn't be against it but I don't know if UD has any opposition to retiring numbers because they've never done it before

Big ceremony in a couple years after Obi is in the NBA before a game would make a nice recruiting event as an added bonus

Not unless we retired a lot of other greats numbers. Great as he was he had one great year. Other had several. Would seem unfair to them.

He won National Player of the Year. If anybody should get their number retired, he should. That said, I think a number of other players would need to have their numbers retired too.

If they don't want to get into the retiring numbers game some sort of display/statue/etc. might be a nice compromise

I think they should, and there are some (very few) other numbers that should also be retired. In fact, I'd probably stop at Obi and Don May. There are several players at the level just below Don May, and doing any one of them might mean retiring 5 numbers at once.

No. Dayton doesn't retire numbers. No one person is bigger than the program. Hallnark of UD basketball has been the team the team the team.

I still disagree with this. The one thing UD does a poor job of, IMO, is really honoring those past contributors to the program and even the great teams of the past. If you walk through the Arena, you find few mentions that the team played in the title game. There are no banners or jerseys hung. We've really just got the signs in the dark corners in the 300s, where NIT appearances are as "prominent" as NCAA appearances.

I think you can honor your past and great players without denigrating the accomplishments of a team. If we don't want to retire numbers that's fine, but there should be a better way of honoring those historic contributors besides just admission into the athletics HOF. You go to other schools and it is a cool experience to see the names of some of the best to ever play there honored. At Dayton, if you aren't already a fan, do you get any of that at the Arena?

There are only 36 possible numbers in college basketball. This is what dictates why players don't have numbers retired. Being inducted into the UD HOF is and should always be the highest honor. Just no need to go further.

When you walk into other arenas, you see the contributions of the greats of the past. I remember seeing all the names in the Dean dome. In my opinion, not having great names and numbers "in the rafters" hurts recruiting. Recruits egos can dream of seeing their name up there with greats. That is what other programs do.

To keep the program elevated, UD needs to leverage every bit of Obi Toppin that they can get quality talent.

Let's bring back the team accomplishment banners first, then we can talk about retiring jerseys.

I have no problem memorializing player jerseys with their name/number, but given the numbering restrictions you can't retire the actual number. Now, if Obi cures Covid, we can talk . . .

I love Obi and all of his accomplishments. I would put his jersey in a place of honor in the Arena. But there are only 36 numbers available in college basketball, so no, don't retire any numbers. If Grant gets a POY every 3 years, that could be a lot of retired jerseys.

North Carolina has specific criteria for their two different tiers of jerseys hung in the Dean Dome.

To have your number "retired" (and hung in the Dean Dome), you have to meet one of these criteria:
AP PoY; Naismith PoY; Wooden Award; Sporting News PoY; Oscar Robertson Trophy; NABC PoY

To have your jersey "honored" by being hung in the the Dean Dome, you must meet one of these criteria:
Member of a gold medal-winning Olympic team; MVP of a National Championship-winning team; 1st or 2nd-team consensus All-America; ACC PoY; NCAA Tournament MOP

If UD did the same, Obi would be the only "retired" jersey,

"Honored" would be Don May, Don Meineke, Jim Paxson, & Bill Uhl.
All were consensus 2nd-team All-American. Since UD joined a conference in 1988, no UD player besides Obi has won conference player of the year.

I walk into a lot of facilities and see countless numbers hanging from the rafters and think, "This program aint good enough to have this many retired numbers."

To me if you start retiring one jersey, you gotta start backdating and retiring jerseys from 50-75yrs ago. Where does it end. What is the criteria. As I said, Dayton basketball has always been about the collective. You want to retire a jersey? The first one on the list would be the #6. And you cant wear #6 on the court anyway so it would be a bit ridiculous.

I find no jersey number retirement to be a fine tradition in actuality. I dont want to be like everyone else.

Obi is certainly worthy, but I voted no. The only exception would be if we did like UK and hung the number in the rafters, but allowed players to continue wearing it.

This is what I had in the back of my mind during this discussion. There are clearly other UD players deserving or recognition, but it's not like there would be 25 all at once that would need to be cared for. Whether we delineate 2 levels of recognition or just hang the jerseys and not retire numbers, this is something that UD really needs to look at. When you go to the Dean Dome, this is one of the cooler aspects and it's an obscene number of jerseys. But they're all deserved! UD can do likewise and not water down the requirements just to make it look like there is more history than really exists.

There should be a waiting period, a "cooling off" period.

Ask me again in five or ten years.

I voted yes but to be honest I read the question too quickly. "Retired" no. Hung from the rafters, yes.

To answer the criticism "where does it end, how many others" I think it's a simple answer: everyone who has won the national POY please stand up.

Does UNC have Dean Smith's signature on the court or not? This could be a big discussion if we want to be just like UNC....

I don't like retiring numbers. I do like hanging up some kind of remembrance of the truly great players, such as large scale jerseys with their number and name on them. Retiring numbers becomes unworkable.

Nothing against Obi obviously, but I'd rather retire #33 (Daniels) and #5 (Steve) if we were going to start down that road.

I think his jersey should be up in the rafters at a minimum. I get the arguments for not retiring the number, but if we are ever going to do it, with the limited numbers, it should be reserved for National Players of the Year. I like the UNC model for retired vs honored, and that way we'd have more than 1 jersey up there, even if only 1 was officially retired. I at least hope Grant steers players away from the number for a few years, barring some sort of recruiting coup.

Thanks for the info. Kind of funny how so many want to be like UNC when it comes to retired/honored numbers but many wouldn't want to be like UNC because they don't want Blackburn's signature on the court.

They are two different issues. Nobody is saying we want to be UNC, it's serving as an example. Stop trying to shoehorn every discussion into another tired one about Blackburn's signature.

Go to an Ohio State football game. They retire the numbers of guys who win the Heisman. That's essentially what Obi did in basketball. It should be celebrated somehow, whether that's through a number retirement or other recognition.

I';ve said it before and I'll say it again....as a lifelong Yankee fan...retiring numbers is silly. even if there are players who deserve it, at some point it becomes unteneble and completely contrived. I get it that babe ruth was great, but whether or not someone 100 years later wears number 3 has zero effect on how we remember him and his accomplishments. and no organization has the discipline anymore to keep it a rare and special thing. I love the likes of Ron Guidry and Bernie Williams as much as the anyone, but c'mon. it's just silly and shallow marketing.

There are concourses and sections of the arena everywhere to honor the great players and times for UD. do something nice there for folks to see.

Okay, I'll give in. Nobody named Toppin should every be allowed to don the number one for UD's men's basketball program ever again. Unless of course it's Obi's son.

That's a good argument for not retiring numbers at all. The Yankees have retired 21 numbers (for 22 players, since one number was retired for 2 players). Looking through the list, I'd say at most 9 of them are deserving. I'd vote 'yes' for retiring Obi's number and then at the same time said that I'd also retire Don May's number... and nobody else's.

But you're right - if the door is opened, there would probably be calls for a dozen other players, too, and that would be silly.

It's not impossible to maintain that discipline, though. La Salle University baseball has retired just 2 numbers in its history.

What I have seen at another college (can't remember which one offhand) was number banners with the names of players of honor who had worn that number.

I like that option -- hoist a jersey with the name of every honored player who wore it.

I think as a program we need to do a better job honoring our past. Hang jerseys up, celebrate those who were here before. We have a storied tradition and we have to do a better job telling that story to eveyone that steps foot in UD Arena. Whether it's a 4yr old attending their first game, a kid from LA playing for USC in the first four, or recruit we desperately need. Everyone should "feel" our tradition.

I wiped the floors of UD Arena for years in College because I understood the history of our program and wanted to pay homage to those who came before. We have something pretty special.

Throw a darn jersey up.
