It is still a positive development though because he is a similar player to Dawkins. He's not more likely to commit to Michigan now that they have another player in the same class who plays the same position.

Music to my ears. As some of you know, I have opposed the need for more guards and lobbied for big men.

I agree with this plan. Holding a ship or two let's you keep the door open for a top 100 guy who falls into your lap.

Looking at the UMhoops.com site Muhammad Ali Abdur-Rahkman is supposed to be 20 when the season starts so he might more ready physically to come in and play

I agree with keeping an extra schollie for the '15 class unless it's a can't miss opportunity. But there is no reason to save a schollie for a mid-season transfer. Transfers are up, but there are still relatively few midyear transfers who don't have issues. So I would definitely hope they consider taking a chance on a grad transfer because it does virtually nothing to minimize the flexibility that is desired. Despite what Archie says, I think there are scenarios which he doesn't expect to come to fruition obviously in which we would use all three. His plan may not to be use them all but it could still happen. Anyway, really how Dawkins comes on board.

Verbal Recruits added two names to their Duquesne offer list, JUCO forward Detwon Rogers of College of South Idaho without citing a source and Aleer Leek per rivals. Rogers is a slightly undersized power forward averaging 17.9 points per game as a sophomore, but even at 6’6,” Rogers could serve as a replacement for Ovie Soko. He rebounds the ball well, can shot inside and out and gets to the line thirteen times a game.

Kid reminds me of Chris Johnson. He would be a good replacement prospect for Oliver. Has offers from W Ky, San Fran, Duq, and interest from Gonzga.

Great leaper and nice looking shot.

College of Southern Idaho is one of the top JUCO programs in the country. Sounds like he could be a DMO replacement

just recently returned to the floor, returner Detwon Rogers, an explosive, 3-point shooting power forward who was all the rage the last couple of months after losing weight and recovering from an Achilles injury, has missed time with a bad ankle,

Heck of an athlete who instantly becomes the best dunker on the team: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5PjkjUEAPM

But he can do a lot more than dunk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MYIEQ38IOM

Definitely looks to be a nice player.

I know Archie says he doesn't want to use all 3 schollies, but it would be pretty awesome to solidify the roster like this -

A 2/3 with immediate 4 year eligibility: Aubrey Dawkins
A 3/4 with immediate 2 year eligibility: Detwon Rogers
A 4/5 with TBD eligibility: ???

according to Archie they are saving at least one ship. If they signed Rogers and Dawkins they would be finished.

Watched his you tube video. Very athletic. Reminds me of Chris Wright only with a great outside shot out to three point range. Pronounced his own name De/tron with a long e.

Would definitely help and bolster the front line of McElvene, Robinson, Scott, Pierre and Pollard.

I think they would be finished if Dawkins and Rogers decided to come to UD...

Pollard, Rogers, Robinson, Scott & McElvene will be the 5 "Bigs"

Yep. As much as I would like to add another 6'8"+ guy, got to trust Archie if he doesn't see anyone worth adding.

In addition to those you mention, Pierre can cover the 4 and you can slide him into the group if you add guys like Dawkins and Rogers who can also cover the 3.

Potential 4s: Robinson, Pierre, Pollard and Rogers
Potential 5s: Scott, McElvane, Robinson

I didn't catch the "r' . Think it's Dee-twon.

Whatever, he appears to be anything from a 2 to a 4, if he wants to be. Has the athleticism to guard, rebound, and run the floor. Which pretty much defines the athlete Arch wants in a wing. In one 4 game stretch he shot 10/20 from 3pt, while at the same time able to hit the stop and pop J.

You are right. I just misspelled his name with an "r" instead of a "w".

I agree he can be whatever he wants to be between a 2 and a 4 which gives Archie tremendous flexibility if someone gets into foul trouble or if he wants to go smaller.

We have depth at the 2, 3 and 4 positions...we need bigs...and not 6'6" bigs...we need >6'10" knuckle-draggers...make it 2!

Bigger isn't just better, it's best! Size matters.

A good back-up to Pierre is not biggest need but would be very helpful so that Sibert can play more SG and be on floor with Pierre more often.

If Dayton can get Aubrey and Detwon, I think they're going to factor in to the rotation heavily. Because I think what may happen is that the most effective lineup Archie can put out there would be a small lineup. With the kind of ball movement Dayton is capable of, think about a lineup with 5 shooters with range out to 3 point territory.... a nightmare to defend! Specifically, I think when we need Jalen to cover the 5, any match up difficulty he might have would be made up for by the mismatches created at the offensive end by such a lineup.

Small Lineups With 5 Shooters

1) Khari/Scoochie
2) Jordan Sibert
3) Dyshawn Pierre
4) Detwon Rogers
5) Jalen Robinson

1) Khari/Scoochie
2) Jordan Sibert
3) Aubrey Dawkins
4) Dyshawn Pierre
5) Jalen Robinson

Of course, I expect Darrell Davis to be able to knock down shots but leaving him out of this because clearly Sibert will be out best shooting guard next year. The rest of the roster then - Pollard, K. Davis, Scott & McElvane are the guys you use when you need less shooters, more size, rebounding, or defensive presence. The guys you go to when it's time to ugly the game up and throw off the other's team rhythm by giving them fits on the defensive end.

We have no depth whatsoever at the 3. Right now we have Pierre. No one else. Pollard is not an ideal 3 and Sibert is our best shooting guard and will likely get most of his minutes there. 6'10" guys are great but most are projects. Perhaps Archie feels he can get a guy like that who is ready as a freshman in the '15 class vs one who is out there now who won't be ready to contribute until '15 anyway.

Here's something of an update on Dawkins visit to Michigan: http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/couple-m...ops-recruiting

Apparently, Michigan thinks Dawkins can play the 3 or 4. The little bit of video I watched several weeks ago had me thinking a shooting guard who was big enough to slide over and play small forward. Power forward though was not an impression I got. Interesting.

Apparently, Michigan thinks Dawkins can play the 3 or 4. The little bit of video I watched several weeks ago had me thinking a shooting guard who was big enough to slide over and play small forward. Power forward though was not an impression I got. Interesting.
Well, he must be still growing, verbalcommits is still listing him at 6'2", but your link had him as tall as 6'6".

The last month college coaches have offered/taken commitments from SR's who CAN'T play at their level....

Brian Snow ‏@BSnowScout
This weekend they will watch JR's who can, but wont offer because they can "do better"... A spring tradition unlike any other

My favorite line: "He still plans to visit Dayton this week (and I think it's worth keeping in mind that Dayton has been recruiting him much longer)."

It's tough to admit, but I was impressed by the UM board. I appreciate their respect for UD. They didn't toast the guy who recognized that UD had been in on Dawkins longer. It would (will?) be interesting to check their board if Dawkins commits to UD this weekend.

Interesting that it's been moved up. Probably both parties anxious to get together after the Michigan visit. A good sign that he's really planning to make his official visit to Dayton and not taking the Michigan offer without seeing what Dayton has to offer. Seems like Dayton has a great shot at him.

He left Ann Arbor with an offer in his pocket. That's great for the Flyers. I'm sure that AM knows that green means go, and Dawkins gave AM the green light when he didn't say yes to UM. It's possible that the Elite 8 run will help AM "L-Avert" (alright, a bit of a shameless, lame effort) another guy from saying yes to the late charging guys up North.

I don't know if this was posted, but here's a great video of Dawkins: http://www.umhoops.com/2014/04/15/re...high-michigan/. He makes a shot while driving to the right that is eerily similar to the shot that Vee made against OSU. He seems to be very comfortable shooting the ball behind the arc and beating guys off the bounce. Very smooth. We've had a Velvet...time for a Silk, as in Silky Smooth.

will be interesting to see what happens but in most cases UD is not going to win a recruiting battle with Michigan.

He left UM without committing. He's still making his official visit to UD. I have to believe that we have a shot. He's not just some poor kid looking to make all of his official visits so that he can do a bit of traveling. I bet we have a shot.

I noticed his low release as well, but it's very smooth. And, he is reported to be 6'6" now. He also seems to get good elevation on his jump shot. I'd take my chances

If Aubrey is being guided by his dad, which I beleive he is, we have a good shot. Did you see the comments by Johnny after we beat Stanford? He stated that we came after them in "waves" and he couldn't beleive how many good players we had. He knows his son will have a chance at significant playing time.

The dynamic forward Chris Wright, who grew up in Trotwood, Ohio, just west of Dayton, said he had no intention of playing for the Flyers. But Gregory, instead of discussing Wright’s N.B.A. future, gave him a list of 11 things to work on, including ball-handing and midrange jump shooting.

“I put that on my door,” said Wright, who picked one thing to work on each day. He eventually picked the Flyers, too, over Michigan State, Michigan and others.

TA111 brings up a great point. His dad knows what happens at the high major schools. He understands how coaches try to fill a void left by someone who transfers or leaves early for the NBA, but they try to go after a more substantial replacement in their following recruiting class. Aubrey may get that UM's courtship is nice, but that it wouldn't end well as soon as the next hot chick comes to the party.

He might be thinking he could be struggling for playing time on a second class team at Michigan and be an after thought most of the time, or play for the primary team at UD and have a very good shot at playing time out of the gate and not have to wait until his senior year to have a chance at being a starter.

The fact that he is still coming to UD for his visit, and has accelerated the time frame tells me he really liked UM, but he is interested in UD and wants to check out a smaller school. He has to make a choice soon, or the ship will sail at UM, but he didn't cave to the pressure and talked them into some time. They gave it to him, so they really want him.

Usually in this instance, the recruit caves and we don't get the recruit on campus. So he either has a lot of respect for Archie and has talked his way into more decision time to show his appreciation, or he is going to show up and agree to play for Archie and will use some leverage. So, I think Archie has a very good shot at bringing him in and it may be better than 50/50 in our favor. Unless he is going to walk on the Michigan offer, I bet his recruiting stops this week.

I've said that I don't care if they pick up a guard at this point. But if Aubrey is as good or better than anyone they have a shot at next year then you take him if you can get him.

Hopefully he gets a chance to sit down with Vee and Jordan. They may be able to tell him the differences at UD and their previous schools.

I noticed that low release as well. Also, his right hand ends up about 24 inches from his body. That is not a class release, but it seems to work for him.

@Brotherhood05
Cole Huff has 2 visits Set in stone with Iowa May 2 and Dayton May 9 figuring out dates with Creighton and Vanderbilt

Also, I picked up on some interesting info on the Michigan board. Someone there claims to work with Huff's father at a high school in Inglewood and got the impression that he would love to go to UCLA (they are no longer a restricted school) but UCLA may not offer. Of the schools that definitely want him, he really likes Iowa. Source: http://forum.umhoops.com/discussion/...014-targets/p2

Agree that he would be a fantastic addition.

I would like to know their prediction percentages. I hope they are wrong as well.

John Beilein is a great coach. My assumption is he's well respected among the NBA community given that the son's of both Glenn Robinson and Tim Hardaway both chose Michigan. As a class I've only heard that he's a class act.

That said, I believe Archie was the first to offer a scholarship. Plus he's demonstrated that 10 players will get PT including Freshman. Someone will get Vee's minutes.

Those predictions are not always correct, 4 out of their 5 predictions regarding Darrell Davis were wrong, they all thought he would pick Michigan State.

Does anyone have any insight on when we might hear Detwon Roger's decision/know how the visit went? I'm assuming he is done visiting schools, I'm not sure when or if there is a specific deadline to declare but you would have to think time is running out for those playing next year.

I really want this kid. He brings in athleticism at the 3/4 spot and fills a void that we will miss from DMO's minutes. We need bodies and it sounds like he has some talent. If Archie can land Rogers and Dawkins with one scholly left in our pocket I will consider it a successful offseason.

I don't know how many gentlemen there are in the recruiting game, but, is it possible he had some serious discussions with the staff and the staff at UM made a judgement call that UM is not the right place for him? But in order to avoid embarrassing the kid they decided not to publicly announce they are pulling their offer? That way he can tell the story that "this place was just a better fit for me" and be neither lying nor embarrassing anyone?

It feels like that should happen when adults get together to make decisions. It also feels like that rarely happens.

Spring signing period runs into May but players still sign I think it's called a "grant in aid" or commit to a school without signing anything past the signing deadline

Rogers probably depends on how big a priority is with the staff. They've got Cole Huff in a for visit and maybe potentially other recruits/transfers lined up. Maybe they'd take Huff or another frontcourt recruit/transfer before Rogers and take Dawkins or they could like all 3 enough to take them all.

Dawkins it sounds like they've been recruiting the longest from the available info for spring

in the recent past UD has tended to bring in players in the order of interest (from UDs side). The fact that Rogers and Dawkins have visited tells me they are a priority.

They offered Dawkins this weekend when he was on his visit so that isn't the case.

Since coaches cannot comment on recruits, the word was leaked by Dawkins' camp. They wouldn't say that he had an offer if he didn't. It would reflect poorly on them and indirectly look bad for his dad. UM has needs, and Dawkins is a fit. He may be less than ideal, which would lead UM to recruit over him next year. My guess is that Dawkins knows that it could happen. This very well could be why he is keeping his visit to UD. We need to remember that recruits don't just look at our Elite 8 run. They also know that all 3 freshmen had the chance to develop and play this year. They may know that Pollard was on the court with a minute left against OSU. They likely know that Scoochie got significant playing time. They probably know that Davis was a defensive stopper. Plus, they know that guys from the A10 can make it to The League. UD may not be UM, but we're a lot closer to UM than we are to WSU. Dawkins is on campus tomorrow, and we're after UM. I feel d&%^ good about that!

For me, here is my wish list in order:

1) Dawkins. Really think he's going to be a star. 4 year guy gives him the edge for me.

2) Cole Huff. He'd probably be number one if he could help next year, but has to sit, and just two years.

3) Detwon Rogers. Looks awesome. Can play immediately. My only worry is adjustment from JUCO but I like him quite a bit.

I like Dawkins and hope we get him today or tomorrow. He must be a priority for the staff since they have him in first. My guess is that the coaches will take either Huff or Rogers, and it will be up to them to say 'yes' first. We need someone in a uniform next year, so I'd rather have Rogers even though he has to make the adjustment from JUCO to Di. If Dawkins leaves without committing, I would bet he won't be playing for UD. I'm sure he's had many talks with his dad, and he can probably talk through his decision over the phone. Get Dawkins then either Huff and Rogers. If that happens, we'll be in great shape.

I heard that Archie chained him up in the basement of UD arena and wasn't going to let him leave. Just speaks to the kid's tremendous athleticism that he was able to escape. I'm sure he's thinking about it!

Besides any that are carried over, how many schollies would Dayton have for the '15 class? Sibert's would for sure be open. That's not the only one, right?

Sibert's and what carries over. Gav and Sibert would have been the only two seniors but with him leaving, signing 2 guys in the fall and one open scholarship this season

If we only have one scholarship open next year, that's really bad timing. He has a year to sell the Elite 8 run right now. Maybe we should have waited and had the Elite 8 run next year instead.

If we sign only two now (which Archie has said) we will have two for next year.

You see I can't stop I won't stop
'til I check a mil'
I need a super bad b** and a house on the hill
See you my dude right
that mean we pa'tnas in crime
It's Forty Fonzarelli and Malik Dime

Okay, so that last lyric is supposed to say Mack Dime instead of Malik Dime.

But yeah, I got some '90s rap lyrics in my head now that I haven't been able to shake loose since I saw this kid's name.

Anyway, I really hope if they get Malik Dime this is a package deal in which Dayton also gets a guy I can refer to as Forty Fonzarelli.

Not that it's a bad highlight reel, but it doesn't really show anything. Almost all dunks, and most of those are due to the passes he receives. I expect he's very good if he got an offer, but the highlight reel doesn't really demonstrate any skills - it just shows his size.

Here's another highlight tape:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUhrFCt2flc

All I can tell is that he attempts to shatter the backboard and rip the rim off the basket every time he dunks. In similar fashion, he has a propensity to try to deflate the basketball and/or decapitate someone in the crowd with every blocked shot.

There's nothing to suggest he can actually make a jumpshot, but what he's probably best at is letting guards know that there is a chance they will be killed if they come anywhere near the lane.

found this post on a North Carolina Greensboro board about Dime

His name is Malick Dime. He played at Walnut Ridge in columbus Ohio where his team played against Jordan Potts' Northland team. This year he played at New Hope Christian Academy in NC. Here are both of the MaxPrep sites:
http://www.maxpreps.com/athletes/V8W...malik-dime.htm
http://www.maxpreps.com/local/team/r...6-967fb4bfa632
As you can see there is confusion whether it's Malik or Malick, but from what I've seen it's with a 'c". Here is a clip of him dunking on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LYBA-bw7s8
and here's one showing highlights from this season:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HW_YTF8q9LM

He oviously is an athletic big man with potential. He seems like someone who fit well into coach Miller's system. I don't know if there has been any movement in his recruitiment other than he visited though. But at least now you guys can take a look and see for yourself.

Ditto. He's a good athlete, with good hands. He made two freethrows out of ?? with a nice pure stroke. He plays young Chris Wright-type defense. All that is good. But that reel could really be 30 seconds long.

Bottom line, if Arch wants him, we should want him.

So you're saying we offered a 6'10" athletic big man who can block shots and bring the house down. I dont think there should be any questioning why. I feel that Archie probably wants an enforcer down low on defense. He may not be as strong as some of the players we have/had down there, but he's would be one of the more athletic ones for his size.

I think that would be a very good get for us.

Highlights are just that. I could put together an incredible mix tape of myself in the driveway that would make Dude Perfect look bad.

Been watching kids come through the UD turnstile for 30 years. You just dont know until you know. And you wont know until they suit up in a Flyer uniform and show us something (or not). Until then its little more than a roulette wheel. The Top-20 kids in the nation hold face cards. Everyone else is like pulling the slots. Proper talent evaluation is key.

I can be sick and miserable and assume nobody is any good until I see otherwise, or assume our coaches saw something and he's got potential until I see otherwise. I tend to prefer the latter. Much easier on my heart valves. That said, I reserve the right to make my own evaluations when I see them with my own eyes at the A10 level. What you accomplished at the prep or JUCO level once you arrive here doesn't mean diddly squat. You start from zero again like everyone else.

What is your problem, I never seen you knock anyone elses highlight reels before, so why start now. We all know what a person did before coming to UD carries only so much weight; some pan out while others don't. But I don't get this sudden urge to be a Debbie downer on a prospect.

I've been watching recruits come in to UD for over fifty years and have never knocked any of them but have held my opinion (to myself) till I see what they do in the UD games.

Say what?

Chris expressed probably how many (myself included) feel.

I really could care less about the NFL draft hype. I have watched players tear it up in AAA Columbus but then they get to the Tribe, they fizzle.

Let me know when the real games start. I pay attention to what happens then.

I don't think anyone is knocking Malik's highlight reel. The knock is on highlight reels in general. They just show highlights. It's a fair opinion that we shouldn't try to evaluate a kid based on them, but I think it's fun so I do it. Of course, I know I'm not making a good assessment because I don't have enough info, but I'm cool with that because my opinion doesn't actually matter. The coaching staff has the info. Trust their opinions but if we want to follow recruiting and pretend like we know what we're talking about, there's no harm in it.

Having a great shotblocker in the middle is a +2 for any defense. I love watching teams that have that intimidator in the paint. I've seen Penn State with one. I've seen Saint Joseph's with one. There are guys scattered throughout the NCAA who have that special ability and I covet it. I've dreamed of UD getting a hold of one of those guys for years. I think that Chris Wright is our all-time best shotblocker and his shot blocking numbers were not that great. We are due.

I think this Malik guy has the potential to be a very good shotblocker. I'd take a chance on that.

That's the point

Originally Posted by DallasFlyer View Post

Actually the latter was exactly what I zeroed in on. But that's even ok if the reel shows the kid can post up, catch a bounce pass in traffic, make back door bounce pass, block out, or any one of a couple dozen skills. But two and a half minutes of the same thing is not an impressive compilation by whomever put it together. Maybe even did the young man a disservice.

Dime has great length and hops. Something we are a bit short on. Might complement Steve McElvene really well. And the real clincher, he might still be growing. Hope he chooses Dayton.
