Wait - the new intro was a one-time thing?

Maybe I was the only idiot at UD Arena on Saturday night - but I assumed the new intro with the court projection was our new intro. So imagine my surprise and disappointment when I read tonight that that was a 1-time thing!

Such a bummer. That was awesome.

Jeff - Just write a check with a bunch of zeroes and it is a done deal. They would probably even put your name on it.

I suspect that’s not your typical video machine sold at your local Best Buy. The normal pregame videos are just fine.

It involved synchronized projectors & high-powered servers for the animation ($$$$). Didn't sound like even pro franchises have on a permanent basis. Our resources are better spent elsewhere. Who knows what will be possible or cheaper down the road. GO FLYERS.

Here's a different company that does projection mapping. One estimate said $10,000 per minute of programmed content.

This was meant to be an innocent poke. Little tongue n cheek. This is over on the building thread. Please, let's not default to thinking a school with a $50k tuition and a $580M+ endowment is going bankrupt here.

It's surprising that there are quite a few out here look at this as just pure cost.
It is something that can set Dayton apart from other programs, help with recruiting, future first fours, etc. The technology is out there. It's going to to become mainstream at some point. We either adopt and get an early advantage, or we follow.

The Columbus Blue Jackets used that technology during the playoffs this spring. Sadly, they will most likely be able to save their money this season.

Over a million for that system...10k per minute is right...

Do the math...money can be better used elsewhere unless someone writes the check and says they want it for a 12 projector system, 150k worth of servers, and someone trained to program and run it.

I was in the first row of 411, exactly in the middle, 3/4th of the way up from the floor. The show was awesome. My brother (UDEE79) was in the corner in 20X and was less impressed. So I don't know if most of the folks get the same effect or if it was worth it to them. The folks in the west stands saw everything upside down and I don't know if the 3D effects were as good seen from the other side.

Final verdict, I am not willing to pay a seat license for the show... and it is not as good a show for the people who are... so we probably won't buy one quite yet.

Definitely not impressive from the 100's...

It is a really cool thing...but not a wise investment that doesn't increase revenue or ability to compete.

The fan experience has always been great at UD Arena since it opened in 1969. The modernization that started years ago with the opening of the flight deck etc. has been outstanding.

A number of behind the scenes improvements, ie: infrastructure, have been made. Fans will probably not be aware of them.

The fan experience is A+ at the arena. The quality of the teams have ranged from F in the early 90s to a C to B+/A-. The team has been NIT caliber for the last 20+ years, with a few exceptions where they barely made the NCAA. (Archie had a good 4 year run).

I hope the administration looks carefully at improving the quality of the teams on the floor so NCAA tournament can be a more likely outcome each year. I'm not sure impressing the fans more will get you there.

I understand the challenges of the conference, the Big 5 squeeze, the history. But, I will still like to see a higher caliber product on the floor. I am cautiously optimistic that this year's team is higher quality and can be an NCAA team. On paper, they appear to be.

UD just spent $76 million renovating the arena, immediately asking for a $1 million+ video upgrade seems a bit much.

The sad reality is that the more successful the sport program, the more gifting is made to academics (not just athletics). The sports name recognition helps with university fund raising in a large way.

I just shake my head whenever I think of that.

I'm all for using the money in a manner that best helps us compete. But do we know how it is being used? I legitimately have no idea what our recruiting budget looks like or how many doors that has opened (or not) in the past. Are we recruiting like a top 25 program or like an above average A10 school? If that's where resources are needed, pump it in there.

I just think a school like UD needs to find ways to differentiate itself because it's not going to do it on national TV every night or playing a Big 10 schedule. It needs to get creative and the Arena is one of the biggest assets we have, along with fan interest. If you can make the Arena incrementally more impressive to recruits, I'm not sure why we wouldn't continue to do so at every opportunity. If you wait until the prices drop on the tech, then it won't be a differentiator anymore - UD will be playing catchup again just to keep up with other programs.

It certainly won't help with recruits at the games, unless they are taken up to the Bud Light Deck. Can't see it from seats behind the bench. (I sit in upper 200's and could see very little. The players names and numbers during intros was the clearest.)
I did like that it was done for the Anniversary Year opening game.

I agree that UD has to be out of the box with certain items because we aren't in the ACC or Big 10.

With that said...UD has a P5 facility with P5 player resources with P5 investment in players on campus. From medical to rehab...locker rooms...practice facilities...Nike contract...residential housing...pampered chefs....etc...There are plenty of other big time D1 programs that would be envious of what UD has to offer in that scheme of things.

If you ask a recruit...."Would you rather have your university spend a million on player comforts and extras for you or a fancy light show for the fans"...I will bet you a weeks pay they want that million spend behind the scenes on them for things that the average fan will never see....that is unless you are the fan/donor that wrote the check for the item of concern and your name is on the wall in the Donoher Center. Most fans will never see the stuff that money is spent on...just as other's have mentioned...a huge amount of money was spent on behind the scenes items for the renovation. Some of that exclusive access only about 50 people will ever use on gameday and the general public will never see.

If you want to see if recruits are really impressed we should borrow a few of Rollos Golden Thrones to see if buying a set for the program could sway any 5 stars our way.
The experiment cost is nil and does not commit the U until the technology is proven.

Sounds like the consensus is:

1. All things being equal we'd rather have the George Lucas Machine than not have it.

2. If a fat cat lurking in the darkness believes in it so much to buy it, we're not going to talk them out of it.

3. If we're tasked with floating this light show ourselves, we don't want it that bad.

4. If there are no fat cats and UD borrowed the money elsewhere to purchase and install this thing like the copper pipes and water pumps, 1.5 big salamis would be far better spent visiting HS and AAU games, making in-home visits, hiring more people to watch more prospects on film, better practice and recovery equipment, nutrition, and academic support.

5. Harvard should have the nicest home court pregame video montage in Division-I because they have a $36B academic endowment.

Have I left anything out?

Yes,

I’d rather watch an NCAA tournament team than an NIT team that that has really cool graphics and amazing light show.

in the end UD basketball is a show. People come out for a fun entertaining time. Red Panda is entertaining. But winning is really fun to watch and is very very entertaining. The light show is somewhere in-between. It will become cheap enough that we will eventually get it.
