Interest in Red/Blue Game
What is your interest in this year's Red/Blue Game? For me it is higher than ever. Of course I wanted to see Chris last year but between the point guard questions and several tremendous recruits coming in I can't wait.

We'll make the trip up from Illinois for the Red/Blue followed by the Flyers v. Valpo football game in the afternoon. So, yeah, I am high on the game. Last year both Devin and Chris sat the game out, but hopefully everyone will be on the floor when the whistle blows this year.

OK all of you BB fans.... Take a cue from a true fan of the Flyers, (bobber), and come on over to Welcome Stadium to see a great football game featuring our own Dayton Flyers! What a way to spend a weekend, Flyer basketball and football. Can it possibly get any better than this? Well, maybe if you could work a volleyball game into the schedule....
It would be great if we could get 8K plus to Welcome like we did for the USD game last season!

I agree, I did the bball/fball double header last year and really enjoyed it as did my nephew. I believe that was the day that we received sunburns on one side of our face.

Its been report on here several times. once by me, a couple other times by others prior to me. From people I've talked to some people that are about as close to the team as one could get w/o actually being on the team or related to someone on the team, Paul has had multiple minor injuries, and questions surrounding his physical shape. As a frosh, I'm not to worried about his physical conditioning at this point, the trainers and coaching staff will work on that, and I'm sure he'll be in great shape as the season rolls around. W/ all of that said, when he does play, they say he's easily the best of all the frosh, no real surprise there, but interesting to here from people that have seen them play/practice many times.

One of the things that Paul told me when I spoke to him last year at the MI HS All Star game was that he was really looking forward to coming down to UD and working with the trainers. He said that at that point he was out of shape (altho you could have fooled me) but who would know better than the kid himself? He'll put in the necessary work.

Good to hear, i've heard nothing but good things about him, and even having heard of his nagging injuries this school year, it came as a surprise when I was told his physical conditioning was in question and likely cause of many of those injuries. I'm sure the S&C coaches will have in a fine tuned machine before all is said and done. It also surprised me having seen highlights of the kid on several occasions, but who I was to question that information.
In the end, it makes me all wonder, I'm guessing there is a huge difference b/w a relatively in shape high school senior and a finely tuned college athlete on a basketball scholarship.

Keep in mind, this was in May or June of his senior year in HS. What kind of shape were any of us in during the final days of high school?

Does anyone remember hearing that part of BG's style is to NOT go into a kid's livingroom and tell him how great he is, but instead to sit in front of his mama and tell him all the things he needs to improve on and why.
I just wonder. . . did BG plant that seed. . . and does it explain several comments I've heard from young recruits at UD talking openly about their shortcomings. . .

Oh how I would love to be in as good of shape as I was during the final days of high school or even the final days of college for that matter.
Having been to several red-blue games, I have a level of excitement when it comes to seeing the new guys take the floor. However, full packages aren't in or are still being drilled and the players know each other well enough that it's hard to judge who is going to stand out once there is a real opponent on the floor.
I will say Marcus Johnson looked special his freshman year. After taking a shot, I heard some older fans complaining that his shot was too flat. I guess they didn't consider that when he elevated, his release point was almost level with the rim.

At the commercial shooting, I didn't notice anything that seemed a problem for Paul when shooting layups and attempting dunks. But that was just a drill.
I really enjoy the Red and Blue game. I turn out every year. I'm excited this year, but I am every year that we get a bunch of freshmen. Some of the freshmen are almost a blank page to me, so I like to see them play. Also, over the last few years they have done some warm up drills and shooting drills before the scrimmage. That is real interesting to me as well. Last year, they split up the big men and the guards/wings to do seperate drills at each end of the floor. With such little actual information forthcoming in the summer, fans can go off on a tangent with their beliefs and expectations and the Red and Blue game helps bring things back to reality.
One thing that I found myself thinking at the commercial shoot was that CW stands out as a different level of player even in the layup line. You watch ten guys make some nice dunks and then CW powers one down with such strength and grace that you sit back and say "wow".
I have not seen Chris Johnson play live yet, but I have seen some game videos, and I think he is going to be a little slighter of build than some expect from him. He is certainly tall and long for a 2-3 player, but he reminds me more of Ramod Marshall than Perryman. I read some posters calling him a young Perryman, but he doesn't have that bodystrength IMO. He does rebound really well.

While the new kids will be of interest as they always are, my attention would be glued to the point guards on both teams no matter who they are. Therein lies our fate.

I am not sure where this comparison of Chris Johnson to Perryman comes from. I saw Chris play at an all star game and I would say he is a skinny version of Marcus Johnson with a better looking outside shot. He is quick and can jump and shoot, but he has to bulk up. Decent but not great handle. All the natural talent, if he works hard, he will be great.

that's pretty funny, and one way to look at it.
we lose sandoval and bin man (and of course BR). We gain , and have added, Perry, PW, Chris J, benson, Lowery and others. a healthy CW.
it's payoff time for the Flyers, i believe!

Women scrimmage at 9:45am
Incase you missed it in the women's bb forum, they will in fact be playing next saturday at 9:45 am. Of course, if you want to get the men's autographs then you probably won't get to see the ladies play much.
