Flyers expect 'D' to be strength
also discusses: Trotwood-Madison High School graduate Chris Wright, the Flyers' top returning scorer (10.4) and rebounder (5.7), has grown since last season, saying he's picked up at least an inch. . .. Wright also is a sculpted 228 pounds after weighing in at 217 last year.

Thanks for the link. I like hearing about the D. I really just like seeing college basketball articles in general, but of course that stuff is good to hear. I like this quote from Chris:
"I take pride in the weight room, and I take pride in working hard."
That's awesome. When your best player is also the hardest worker, that rubs off on everyone. I recall seeing some segments of how hard he was rehabbing last year. The guy is a beast, and he's supremely talented. I think we could win every game we play that he's on the court.
As an aside, BG mentioned Stephen Thomas in the article. I feel like nobody at all has been talking about him. I'm actually very interested to see what kind of PT he gets this year. As was hinted in the article, playing good defense will get you time on the court. If thomas steps it up this year, he might play more than we think. Plus, if we're pressing and running a bit more, we'll need more depth. I like having three true PG's on the roster. Thomas played a good part of the end of the Miami game; I wouldn't be surprised if he got more time than most folks think.

Wright's arms look like a pair of .50 Cals. Its obvious he didnt sit on the couch all summer.

Old timers, speak: have expectations ever been higher for a single player going into a season?

ST is a wildcard, as NO attention has been drawn to him. most of us having been putting hopes and stock into Lowery/ London combo.
when i saw him earlier in season he was decent point guard. No more , but no less. moved the ball, was steady, and seemed typical point --- pass first, move ball, control flow.
i think everyone's boats will lift, due to higher talent levels. So, it's possible i believe that Thomas gets 5-10 a game which we haven't really considered

I definitely qualify as old. Higher? Probably not, but equally as high, yes.
I won't name him becasue he never made it out of his Freshman year so some disqualify him for that. But the snail mail press back then knighted him as likely to be our best ever to that date. His pro career substantiated their raves.

I don't see anything wrong with naming him. If you are talking about Roger Brown, he COULD have been the best Flyer ever. We will never know, but I saw him play many times as a freshman at the Fairgrounds Coliseum, and he was amazing. Of course, Chris Wright is also amazing. He also could be one of the best ever. We'll see. (If Roger and Big Bill had stayed in school, how would you like a front line of Roger Brown, Bill Chmielewski and Henry Finkel - Final Four?)

Not in the last 20 years. I get goose bumps thinking about what Chris can potentially do, and if Marcus and the rest of the team give him some backup, we could really be soaring. It was also good to hear he's grown to a legit 6'8".

Every team has to grow into an identity, and that's what we're doing now. For some teams, there's a clearer picture earlier. Some teams continue to evolve. That's our challenge."
not to be a buzz kill but this is the scary part of the article. I interpreted this to mean, "Our defense will be great, but man - I have no idea what to do on offense."
We have a lot of talent, but I'm a little nervous about BG's ability to utilize that talent offensively. Anybody else nervous about that?

I'd be fibbing if I said that statement didn't set me back a bit. Like, "Are teams taught and coached, or do they just evolve?
But upon further review, BG has named the guys he wants to be leaders this year. Now he has to see if they take the bull by the horns. I think that's the "evolve" part. When it's tied in the last 2 minutes, who is going to make plays and win the game for us? He won't know who until it happens.

While I am not qualified to answer this question, Captain Obvious will chime in anyway with this nugget:
Since it is now much easier to see the flyers for the out-of-towners and easiser for fans to spread their expectations - namely on this new-fangled internet thing - expectations are bound to be loftier for a player of this generation.
Of course, the expectation themselves might not have been greater in yesteryear, they just didn't spread like wildfire as they do now. It used to be that they were only really pumped up in talk around the water coolers of the Gem City.
So I would hazard to guess there have never been MORE high expectations beyond Dayton for a single flyer entering a season. Remember, they were ridiculously high for CW coming into in his freshman year so if he comes close to the greatness that is projected this year, then next year, expectation would likely be in another stratoshpere.
