Uconn goes down
I know this is the wrong board but wow, what a game. Uconn loses for the 6th straight time in OT. They beat Mississippi State by 60 last year in the tournament.

I don't watch a lot of women's hoops. Watched pretty much the whole game. VERY entertaining game.

Even the woman's game has gotten way to physical... That game was more like a fist fight than a basketball game. Refs are allowing way too much contact, and on the opposite end, they seem to buy too many flops....
UCONN usually can be as physical as anyone, but ....
Major brain fart on UCONN... tie game and the ball w 15 seconds (or so) left, and losses the ball going to the hoop with about 10 seconds to go. Went way toooo early.... Miss St then went down and hit the last second jumper to win...

UCONN never had a close game all year and it showed. Horrible execution and extremely poor coaching by Geno.

I thought Geno's late game mannerisms and post game media comments were classy. He didn't throw his players under the bus like Crean, didn't stomp, cry and whine on the sidelines like Huggins or openly blame the officials like most UDPriders ( ). I expected a little more anger from a coach who had won 111 consecutive games. IMHO, he made it a learning situation for his team and I think it worked.

Thought MS got jobbed on the flagrant foul. Looked like both girls just going for the ball. Academy award Samuelson for who played like she'd been strangled.

Any contact with an elbow above the shoulder is, by rule, a foul...doesn't matter if it's incidental, accidental or intentional. Although those factors are considered when determining the severity of the penalty (ejection, flagrant, etc...). The contact was so obvious I was surprised it wasn't called immediately. As for the Academy Award...no comment !

But the refs missed a call earlier when itsy bitsy ran into the girl who turned her shoulder knocking her to the floor. Even Doris Burke was surprised it wasn't as least looked at as Doris said it needed a closer look but the refs gave a pass.
Not going to get all calls right but when a player gets knocked down then gets up holding her chest looked more than was necessary.
Then on another play MS got a ball but the refs stopped play as a UConn player was holding her eye apparently getting hit. Thought they don't stop play till the injured players team gets the ball.
The first game between Stanford and SC was as physical as any game I'd seen this year. Yep women players are ladies any more.

Actually they beat Tulane 63 60 but they didn't have enough close games to know how to play well in a possession by possession game. Back to the drawing board for Geno and UConn. You can bet they will work on execution for close games. Sometimes being too good can come back and bite you.

The only issue I have is why was that call not made when it happened? If Mississippi State goes down and nails at 3 then UConn is down 5 and they probably don't even call a timeout to let the officials review that call

Dak Prescott's presence made the difference. His celebration after his alma mater's win was great.
The upset reminded me a bit of the Houston upset of UCLA in men's basketball back in January 1968. Both incredible games. Anyone remember that game?

Houston wins by a couple in the Astrodome and then gets blown out in the tournement. It was fun to watch the first game though. Didn't have many games on TV then.

It was an exciting, entertaining game....some pundits calling it the best women's Final Four game ever.
Actually, UConn did have a few close games against top opposition, most on the road: FSU 78-76; Baylor 72-61; ND 72-61; Maryland 87-81; Tulane 63-60.
The Tulane game was a fluke...UConn was without its point guard. The roughly 10 point spread in the other Top 5 team games is a bit deceptive because of late-game fouling. Those were close games on the road at a time when UConn was not ranked #1. Recall, UConn lost the top three WNBA picks. Their success was a surprise to everyone. Noteworthy, I think, is that the last close game against a Top 5 opponent was Dec 29..a pretty long time ago.
The Miss State matchup was not good for UConn. UConn is not big and MSU's very tall center gave them a hard time. UConn was out-rebounded by 8....which has not happened once this season. An amazing stat, I think, is that MSU took 21 more shots than UConn. UConn's FG% and 3pt% both were significantly better than MSU's....but 21 more shots!
Re Auriemma's post-game demeanor...I've never seen him appear upset after a loss; he's a gentleman....would never blame players,...and while winning beats losing, I think he's happy for MSU. Had MSU lost on the basis of the flagrant foul call it would have been a shame for MSU.
Auriemma's broad smile after the winning shot, his deep embrace of the MSU coach and Williams....as well as his post game remarks (and those of his players) say much about his program. To Auriemma, last night's loss was a valuable lesson for his young players who were as inexperienced on the Final Four stage as MSU.
As Doris Burke said during the regionals, "If you're going to get UConn it had better be this year...because you won't next year"....in reference to the talent and depth coming in next year.
_____________
On another topic: I'm puzzled by the status of the UD-UConn 3-game series. One game was this year...then a skipped year....followed by a home-and-home. I don't understand the skipped year because I know UConn had many open spots on next seasons OOC schedule and I presume UD did as well. I hope the home-and-home beginning in 2018-2019 is official.

It was a strange setup for sure, perhaps Jabir was trying to schedule when he thought UD would be at its most competitive years. I'm sure hes had his fill of getting his arse romped over and over.
Now that Jabir is gone wonder if the series will still be on.
