I think the synch issue stems from the 5 second delay of a live broadcast so there is no accidental wardrobe malfunction or similar. Should have been easily fixable.

I didn't nor appreciate the alphabetical unveiling of the at-large teams. Or, the fact that you couldn't initially see the regions, game locations, or the match-ups.

The teams were in alphabetical order. So they get to Seton Hall at the end of a page and there is no Saint Bonaventure ! If I was an SBU fan I would have wet my pants. And then then they post St. Bonaventure using the abbreviation of Saint. You could almost hear the air going out of Olean, NY.

And it took nearly 40 minutes before Ernie Johnson mentioned that live shot reactions from universities were slow due to satellite delays. Prior to that several of the TBS commentators took pot shots at players and fans at these locations.

From CBS/TBS perspective, this format:
A) reduces the risk of being scooped like 2 yrs ago by announcing all the teams immediately, and...
B) holds audiences attention by delaying the pairings
Having said that...God Bless Charles Barkley for calling out the committee chairman re Oklahoma, Ariz St and Syracuse. Chairman just kept repeating "the committee felt like X, Y, Z had the better resume"...he had no ammo to retaliate.

Problem is that they were left out for not playing a tough enough schedule. We were signed to make their schedule tougher. We did not do that this year. Beating us this year did not help their resume.
And yeah - the format this year of the show was awful. Not fun to watch at all...kind of ruined one of my favorite parts of the year.

Took many years, but justice prevailed.
U.D. was one of the teams shown during a selection show and didn't get in. Instead N.D. did, who I believe and a much higher RPI that season.

It is a lot different being in a conference where you know there will be many quad 1 opportunities as opposed to scheduling a W Kentucy, Vermont or Northeastern on the road and hoping they will provide you that opportunity.

If you’re a P5 team, you have ample opportunity to get those wins. Midmajors don’t.

The format was garbage and when Bill Self was on he said he liked it better the other way, but then to not bite the hand that feeds him he back tracked and said they did a great job with it this year.

The Selection Sunday Show was
A DISAPPOINTMENT which started about Mid January and lasted into early March.
Nothing they could of done on the show would have rectified it for me ...... well maybe one thing ......
Maybe they'll improve it next year! What do ya say?????

I'm not sure I saw this explicitly stated as a reason ahead of time for changing to this format, but did it have something to do with the WikiBrackiLeaks of recent years? As in, they wanted to beat the hackers to the punch by revealing all of the teams quicker? If so, it still makes no sense why you "reveal" the auto qualifiers first. Put the at-large names out there first. Again, I don't know if hacking was the reason for the change or they just decided to be idiots -- er, I mean, to try something new? But, wow, was it ever historically bad on so many fronts!

Per the dance card, it looks 3 non-p5 schools got jobbed due to p5 bias.
Middle Tennessee, Saint Mary's, and Marquette were all supposed to get bids, while Syracuse, Arizona State, and Florida State were not supposed to get bids.
I thought the format of the selection show was fine, I think I might have actually prefered this format over the old format. The new format revealed the entire field in about 10 minutes, the old format took about 30 minutes to reveal the entire field.
There was also a noticeable satellite feed delay.
And at the beginning of the show, the audio was not in sync with the video. The hosts mouths looked like one of those old king fu movies.

Saw tweets that mentioned St Mary's SOS. Also, apparently they turned down offers for H/H with some teams that really would have helped them. The others, well, every year there are several deserving teams that get left out and some that get in that shouldn't. OU and Texas both with sub-.500 conference records and shouldn't be in IMO. There are probably others. Yes, they had a few big wins, but if you can't finish at least .500 in your conference, you don't deserve to be in the tournament.

Posting a less than .500 in-conference record should actually be an automatic disqualification from the NCAA unless you happen to win your post season conference tournament- oh, except if you’re a power 5 then....

USC finished 2nd in the PAC12 in the regular season and loses to Arizona in the Finals and doesn't get a bid...???
Oklahoma State beats Oklahoma twice and Kansas twice and doesn't get a bid???
The NCAAT metrics are upside down. Those 2 teams got screwed. ND, Marquette, St. Mary's...get in line.

DanceCard missed a few last year too. The criteria keeps changing including this new quadrant system. DanceCard doesn't factor those changes into its program. I don't think DanceCard will be that useful going forward.

I wonder if it's a coincidence that teams that are under investigation for their recruiting policies ended up on the wrong side of the bubble?

Don't worry, next year the FBI will be running the show - the entire show . . . .

I thought it was painful to watch...it had no flow. Choppy, choppy, choppy.
And when Kenny Smith (with Shaq) pulled out a f'in sharpie to fill out his oversized bracket, the pain became unbearable so I turned it off.

And then we have the Dayton Daily News, and local reporter Nick Blizzard...
Arizona State, Syracuse and UCLA are among the eight schools playing in the opening games of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
|
This line is true, 3 of the 8 schools are listed and are at-large teams. But, he didn't list the 4th at-large team that is coming to Dayton, and who actually has played in Dayton this year..... Saint Bonaventure.
Good ole' DDN. Hating on the A10.

That's exactly why it's the perfect show to record and be able to cut to the chase, freeze the parts that need some scrutiny, and move on. Too painful to watch live. It was easy to freeze the boards.
Just start watching the recording about 20 minutes after it starts live.

The NCAAT metrics are upside down. Those 2 teams got screwed. ND, Marquette, St. Mary's...get in line.
|
I overlooked USC, that was the fourth and final miss by the dance card IINM. Creighton was not supposed to get a bid per dc.
Maybe the new quadrants thing screwed up the dc.

The demise of the DDN continues. And to think it used to be a reputable newspaper. And Marcus Hartman (blogs for MyDaytonDailyNews) is the clown of clowns with his posts purely intended to incite the fan base.

Glad I cancelled my subscription to the Dayton Daily Rag several years ago. It's a dinosaur that's very close to extinction. Don't know or care who Marcus Hartman is, but I would say that he's probably "inciting" less than 1% of the fan base now based on declining subscriptions.

Saint Mary's was ranked #23 and #25 in the 2 polls, yet they were left out of the NCAAT.
I wonder if that is a first?
Sheesh, being ranked does not even guarantee you a spot.

Didn't SMU get snubbed a couple of years ago when they were ranked?
There was a bunch out there that SMU avoided a couple of teams like URI. I don't know how true it was or not. They played (and won) Harvard in a pre-conference tourney but also played Georgia and Wash St but lost both and neither one was really any good in their conference. They also played Cal on the road and us at home. Both were probably disappointing in terms of the quality of the wins.
They probably did not have much margin of error and things did not go well. I don't know about their advanced metrics like Kenpom but I am not too big of a fan of using advanced metrics to be used over actual Ws and Ls. The bottom line is they had a win over Gonzaga and that is about it.

SMU, as in Southern Methodist, did get snubbed in 2014 to make room for the 6th best team in the A10. Larry Brown was the coach and was stunned. Pretty sure they were ranked at the time. (Just kidding about the A10 part. But what a great year it was for the conference in 2014!)
https://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/01/s...-not-back.html
SMC, as in St Mary's, had the scheduling bug bite them. It just goes to show the razor thin margins that non-P5 teams have to work with in life on the bubble. Luck plays a big part too. SMC had no idea that Dayton would tumble to a 140 RPI this season when they signed the 2-year H/H. And they had no idea that Cal would finish next to last in the Pac-12. But if the eye test or smell test is supposed to have meant anything then the Gaels would have easily been included in this year's field. The Gonzaga win was in Spokane. And the Dayton win was part of a string of 19 in a row.
Maybe the good that can come of this is that we'll start to see things like the A10/AAC Challenge or the WCC/Mountain West Challenge. I'd love to play the likes of UC, Wichita St, Temple, Memphis, Houston, and UConn every year.
