BRob needs to have achievement collide with luck. First the trade of Dyson, and now an injury to Austin Rivers requiring bone spurs to be extracted in a minor surgery. Every little bit helps Brian's cause:

Well deserved B-Rob..well deserved!

I wonder how many Dayton fans will be wearing Dayton gear at Hornets games this year? I can see it now, his Hornets teammates giving him hell because he's got a crowd of Dayton Flyer Faithful cheering him while he more than likely rides the bench. But who knows? He might be intricle this season at the PG spot! Either way i'm a Hornets fan now!

BRob with a nice assist and a 3 pointer. Played a nice 5-6 minutes in first quarter of game versus Andrew Nicholson and the Magic. He played about the whole second quarter as well with Vasquez on bench with 4 fouls and Eric Gordon not playing today. Had a couple assists and a nice drive to the hoop for two but did not shoot the three well - nobody on the team did. 5 Pts 3 assists at half.

Roberts makes the highlight clips (2:34 sec long)

Check out Brian at :35, 1:40, 1:50, and the dagger that put the Hornets ahead for the first time late in the game at 2:16 (a mini-Miami dagger).

http://www.nba.com/games/20121007/OR...#nbaGIboxscore

Very solid night for Brian. Led the team in minutes (27).
Shot 3/4 from 3pt, 4/4 from the ft line, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, ZERO turnovers.

PS-one last edit. It was bound to happen, but still there was a bit of deja vu when, on that last dagger the
announcer called "Chris Wright to Brian Roberts" for the bucket.

Yes - he looked really good leading the team back from a 13 pt deficit to a win. With a team full of very young guys he looked to be the calm and collected leader. He is not really strong on defense, but is smart and quick enough to get into passing lanes and pick up some steals. And man , can he come off a screen - always knows when to shoot the jumper or take it to the rim. He got a lot of compliments from the announcers today.

Luckily for the Hornets guards, Anthony Davis will be guarding the lane. So the guards are going to have some lane help on defense. That also looked to me to be BRobs weakest area.

New Orleans Hornets defeat Orlando Magic 85-80 in preseason opener
By John Reid, The Times Picayune The Times-Picayune
on October 07, 2012 at 3:31 PM, updated October 07, 2012 at 7:26 PM Email | PrintBrought to you by
In July, Brian Roberts' stellar play on the New Orleans Hornets' summer league team earned him a roster spot for training camp. In Sunday's preseason opener in Mexico City against the Orlando Magic, Roberts showed why he might be worth keeping around for the entire season.

Roberts, a backup point guard, sparked the Hornets by scoring 12 of his game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Hornets to an 85-80 come-from-behind victory against the Magic.

Except for No. 1 draft pick Anthony Davis forcefully blocking former Hornets forward Gustavo Ayon's shot off the backboard and grabbing five rebounds in the first quarter, the Hornets struggled to execute until the fourth quarter when they made their comeback.

The Magic opened the game on a 10-0 run and led by 16 at halftime.

In his debut game, Davis started at power forward and scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds in 23 minutes. Fellow Hornets rookie Austin Rivers started at shooting guard and scored 10 points and had one assist in 26 minutes. As expected, shooting guard Eric Gordon did not play because of a sore right knee.

For the first three quarters, the Hornets were unable to get into a rhythm offensively. Instead of pushing the tempo, they settled for jumpers and played erratic. Starting point guard Greivis Vasquez had four fouls after the first seven minutes and finished with a team-high five turnovers and four points.

Brian Roberts drives to the basket on his way to a game-high 17 points in the Hornets' 85-80 victory over Orlando in their exhibition opener Sunday in Mexico City.
The Associated Press Forward Ryan Anderson played against the Magic for the first time since Orlando declined to match the Hornets' four-year, $36 million offer for him, before agreeing to a sign-and-trade deal in which they acquired Ayon in July.

Although Anderson led the league last season with 134 made 3-pointers, he missed eight of nine 3-point attempts Sunday and went 1-for-11 from the field before finishing with six points against his former team.

Al Farouq Aminu started at small forward, but played tentative much the same way he did most of last season after the Hornets acquired him in a trade from the Los Angeles Clippers last December. Aminu took three shots and finished with three points.

After trailing 66-54 at the end of the third quarter, the Hornets opened the fourth quarter on a 16-7 run with their backups on the floor. New Orleans' run cut the Magic's lead to 73-70 with 5:35 remaining. Hornets forward Lance Thomas' two free throws gave the Hornets' a 78-76 lead before Roberts' 3-pointer extended it to five.

Roberts quickly got the Hornets in their sets, made precise passes and looked for his shot when the Magic backed off him. Behind Roberts and forward Lance Roberts, the Hornets' bench was effective throughout the fourth quarter. Thomas scored all 10 of his points in the quarter. Backup power forward Jason Smith also had an efficient game. He had two blocks, grabbed three rebounds and scored seven points in 14 minutes.

It was the first of eight preseason games scheduled this month for the Hornets. Starting with Tuesday's home preseason opener against the Charlotte Bobcats at the New Orleans Arena, the Hornets will play three games in five days.

There is another thread talking about Brian Roberts, and his role on the Hornets team. And it's just a few posts down from here.

The announcer said it put them up for the first time in the game but didn't the scoreboard at the bottom of the screen show 78-76, then he hit a 3 to make it 81-76?

Monty Williams, the head coach was interviewed today and had some really good things to say about Brian. He called him a scoring point guard, something that is rare in today's game. I think he has a good chance to actually start because last year's starter, Vasquez, is a pretty weak player.

Absolutely you are correct. I saw that later. Announcer made up a great line-- Unfortunately he was wrong! Thomas tied the game, and then 30 seconds later made
two freethrows which put the Hornets ahead for the first time.

But truthfully it was Robert's three, and then Robert's two freethrows a minute later that put the game on ice.

Personally, I would rather have Robert's come off the bench. The Hornets are going to go through some growing pains this season (I would predict 20 wins tops) and I would just as soon see Brian match up with the opponent's second string guard. It's going to be hard for any Hornet to stand out this season.

Eric Gordon will be the starter, assuming that he is able to stay healthy.

I'm not so sure. Gordon is a much better NBA player at the 2 position. He isn't a very good NBA pg.

I expect Austin Rivers to be the starting pg once he recovers from his ankle surgery. If his injury lingers longer than expected, look for BRob to start. If not, I'm sure he'll be Austin's backup.

I agree. Rivers pedigree is just too much to overcome. Daddy Doc, Duke, 10th in 1st round, franchise cornerstone. 6'4" point guard doesn't hurt either.

Roberts could make a lot of money as a reliable backup.

Man, this would be a great post if we didn't already have 2 other posts at the top of the Men's Basketball forum discussing Brian Roberts and his role with the New Orleans Hornets.

But, what do I know?

Vasquez, Rivers and Roberts will be the point guards on the team. Vazquez (starter last year) will probably start again, but my guess is they will try to focus on Rivers becoming the starter by the end of the year. That being said, Roberts should get plenty of playing time with a rookie that is still being groomed and a back-up type talent as the other point guard.

The time you took to cut and paste that article, you could have pasted it as a new post in the thread where everyone else was discussing the game in question.

BR doesn't have to be the starter or the primary backup to be successful, he can be a guy who shows obvious skill that the team doesn't need and is thus trade bait to another team who does not have 2 PGs they like.

To be clear, I'd expect Gordon/Rivers to be the starting guards. Since Rivers is already back and starting, Gordon would be replacing Vasquez in the starting lineup. I could still see Vasquez starting over Rivers, but BRob won't be starting. Which is fine. He spent 4 years in Europe working on his game to get an opportunity to just play in the NBA. He played well in his first preseason game, but it still is just one preseason game.

Not to get off track is there a way we can merge this and all of the B-Rob threads? It may make it better for all info to be gathered. Also if we do it we might be able to get everyone on the same page with all the articles out there. With the season about to get further underway we might see more of this and with four potential players underway, a title of Flyers in the NBA might help all those looking at the NBA and UD.

Remember when we had a moderator who used to spend his day editing people's posts to correct spelling errors and fixing sentence structure? That was disturbing in so many ways. Not sure what made me remember that, but thank goodness that period of UDP is over.

A little over 2 years ago I believe all UDPride+ members had the ability to access posts and edit them for various reasons. The reason for this I believe was because so many new posters had registered, many for one reason only...to cause trouble.

I recall editing one of the more obnoxious _avier fan's posts (Harvard? Toledodan?) at that time and being told via PM to 'stop'.

But I recall that we had the power...just not for long.

No, he just doesn't appear on the non + board anymore. He is a good cook if that gives you any hint.

Looks like another good game for Roberts. 16 Pts and 8 assists in 29 minutes of work. Lead another comeback win even though he had two turnovers late in the game. Unfortunately it does not look like Searcy, Johnson or even Wright will get any playing time this camp.

Middle of the 4th, Hornets getting beat--but

BRob is 6/7, 5 assists w/only 2 to's. Leading scorer so far.

Get this, Roberts is +12, and the rest of the Hornets roster is minus. Don't know if I've ever seen
that before.

Storybook ending as the Hornets pull it out with a big 4th quarter again 90-87. Roberts leading scorer again
with 16 + 8 assists.

Quotes from the Hornets message board:

Brian Roberts is the truth mannnnnn.
ROBERTS~!!!!!
Rivers is gonna have to step his game up....Roberts going in
If Roberts can defend decently, he may give Greivis a run at the starting gig.
Lance Thomas and Brian Roberts. The two best third strings in the league.
I'm so happy for Roberts!
I'm starting to think Rivers ceiling is a taller Brian Roberts
Diamond in the rough!!!
I know its only preseason and Charlotte.....but it is for the other players too.
BTW, I am LOVING what I'm seeing from Roberts. Definitely a diamond in the rough so far. Hope he can take this and run with it.
Roberts has that CLUTCH gene that Skip Bayless always talks about!

I gave you props for the post b/c I'd like to see him become a star. But keep in mind this is the pre-pre season. The full pre-season starts and then the regular season (playoffs). Stars aren't made in the NBA until the playoffs, and everyone knows that no one is really trying until then, which makes the "pre-season" even worse competition wise.

I'd be happy at this point if he gets significant playing time this year.

I must admit I have not followed the NBA much beyond my Cavs and Warriors last year but I noticed Gary Forbes playing for Houston Rockets tonight (against the Hornets). The former UMass forward is listed as a 6'7 220lb guard. I hated when we played against him but he was a hell of a player. Good to see him in NBA.

Ive yet to see Austin Rivers do jack squat in either the summer league or preseason. I just dont know how this love affair started. The dude cannot shoot straight. If his name was Austin Quivers from Juke University, nobody would be giving this kid the time of day based on what hes shown.

Is this a serious comment? And you're an administrator on this site?

Austin Rivers was a top 5 recruit coming out of high school, and averaged 16 points per game as an 18 year old freshman at Duke. He also hit a buzzer beater 3 pointer in front of 22,000 at UNC for a Duke win.

He is unbelievably talented, but because he has a below average game or two in the PREASEASON, you're writing him off for the rest of his career.

Wow.

Just brutal analysis. Over and over again it has been shown if you are good enough, you will be noticed by NBA scouts. Look no further than Damian Lillard, from tiny Weber St., being drafted at #6 last year.

If Austin Rivers was at "Juke University", or Weber State, or Dayton, he would still be a lottery pick.

Im quite aware of what Rivers did in college. Im aware he scored 16ppg. Im also aware he was a turnover machine, mediocre jumpshooter, and a lousy FT shooter at Duke. Im also aware that Michael Olowokandi was drafted #1. The NBA drafts on projection. They are projecting Rivers' future potential. Right now however, he's mediocre at the NBA level. Perhaps in a year or two he will be all world, but he's done next to nothing in the summer league and preseason to impress anybody, yet the slobbering love continues.

Nobody is writing the kid off the rest of his life. Im talking about the Austin Rivers PR machine. Doesnt hurt that his old man is coaching the Celts to further insulate him. The kid went like 1-9 with 6 turnovers in one of the summer league games and the announcers couldnt stop talking about how good he was. In fact I remember one series fondly. He sliced down the lane, drove to the hoop -- and missed the layup. The announcers couldnt stop talking about his amazing first-step. Were that Roberts, they'd have critiqued his inability to finish a bunny.

It was a Rivers orgy -- all the while Roberts was scoring about 18 points with 6-7 assists and 1 turnover right in front of their faces and they had almost nothing to say. You get that latitude at Duke. You dont get that latitude at Weber State or Dayton. If you stink, nobody's talkin'.

He's played 3 preseason games. These games mean nothing.

Derrick Rose had a terrible rookie preseason, and he ended up wining rookie of the year and MVP 2 seasons later.

Brian Roberts is a lion who will and can carry a team in the clutch. I remember watching him play Pitt and he challenged the guy guarding him. We needed a bucket and he took the role and the responsibility to make it happen? The best lion, I ever saw at Dayton was JIM PAXSON. In the crunch, on several occasions, I saw him take over a game to get the victory.

For the record, there was great relief on the Celtics MBs when Austin Rivers was drafted by New Orleans before the Celtics got to their two picks. Fans knew he had been hyped beyond reason.

New Orleans has to hype Rivers and Davis to sell tickets at home and on the road. My first thought was a 20 win season, but upon further review this preseason I would go with 17.

Rivers is just plain lost right now in an NBA uniform. Great temporary opportunity for our guy.

Similar scenario for CJ Miles out of a Dallas highschool signing with Utah a few years back. Miles was lost for years in the NBA. I predict Rivers will be on IR a lot just trying too hard to live up to the hype in the 30+ minutes he gets. Stay ready Brian.

I don't know, a quick-stepped point guard from Juke University would probably be pretty special. Well, either pretty special or a star on an And-1 tour.

My take on Austin Rivers in college was that unlike the vast majority of Duke players (and teams) he never understood that it was about the team, not about the player. Just my impression, but obviously coach K was willing to play him quite a bit. Take the small sample from this year that we have. River's had one game out of 4 where he had better than 1 assist (he had 3) .... and he hasn't scored well at all despite shooting a lot. As a SG his numbers are awful out of the gate, and as a PG his numbers are awful out of the gate. Not sure how they actually intend to use him as he's listed sort of as both.

BRob on the other hand is distributing the ball regardless if he's scoring/shooting well (really he's only had one off night shooting). He's had 4, 4, 8, 4 assists respectively, has scored, and has been clutch. Exactly what the man was while at UD.

Unfortunately NOLA is rebuilding and is pretty much going to get as much time as they can with their rookies regardless of the outcome on the court. That team isn't ready to compete in the west yet and they have to see what they have in Rivers because they've invested a lot of money. He's only a year away from having lived at home with mom and dad, and the dude can't even legally purchase a beer yet. He may come around in time but so far this year he looks unprepared for the challenges coming at him.

My take on Rivers is that he was what used to be called a "ball hog". He wanted the ball and was interested in hunting his own shot, not setting up his teammates. On defense he didn't play the kind of perimeter D that coach K is used to getting from his guards.

Rivers has a lot of talent and natural athletic ability. His problem is going to be, as it was pointed out above, that there is no "I" in team and that there is a lot more to basketball than dribbling and chucking shots. He may well figure it out but IMO he is not a sure bet.

Rivers has a much higher ceiling than BRob as far as defense goes, IMO. He is bigger, stronger and more athletic. But BRob is a seasoned pro, and we all know he is Mr. Clutch. He is much more disciplined at this point in his career and shoots the 3 so well without being streaky. His pg skills are just enough to get by in the NBA. His offensive/scoring ability is what gets him serious consideration in the NBA and gets him on the court.

Absolutely awful game for Roberts and the Hornets through 3 quarters. The only one who showed up today is Anthony Davis 17 Pts 7 reb. Nobody else can find the rim. Roberts is 1-8 and even missed a free throw

Roberts definitely is off tonight. Rivers is now under 29% for the pre-season. Oh that's right pre-season doesn't count. Really.

Ended up with 10 Pts, 3ast, and 5reb on 4-11 shooting. The good news is he played 31 minutes. All the other Hornets guards combined were 4-22, so I guess he held his own.

Interesting. Could we potentially see B-Rob start a game? Outside of CW's start last year, the last time a Flyer started a NBA game was March 15, 1995. Detroit at Los Angeles(Clippers). Going to be very fun watching B-Rob this year if he can get a couple starts. Hopefully he gets to go up against CW, DS, or CJ. Just an FYI, the last time two Flyers opposed each other in the NBA was when Sedic Toney and Jim Paxson squared off on November 10, 1989. Game log included.

Saw Brian Roberts Play Tonight for New Orleans

Everyone,

I attended the Dallas Maverick vs. New Orleans Hornets pre-season game this evening. Brian Roberts played in both halves. He did not start. He played with leadership and maturity. He always made the right passs. He was always in the right place on the floor on both offense and defense. He made a couple shots. He missed a couple shots. All of his passes except one that was too low and bounced off a "bigs" toes were solid good passes.

Austin Rivers (the starting point guard) got hurt on a play of his own doing. He was under the basket trying for a shot and just landing wrong. I did not see him get bumped or any such thing. I noticed that his fellow team mates showed very little interest or concern when he crumpled to the ground, writhing in pain and was partially carried off; not placing any weight on his right leg. Perhaps, as a rookie there has not been any time to develop team spirit.

Thumbs up Great opportunity for Brian

Didn't get to see the second half, but thought the first half was pitiful Hornets basketball even by NBA standards. It looked like an NBADL game. It's no surprise that the team would show ambivalence toward an injured Rivers. The Hornets are trying to sell tickets, so as a consequence Davis and Rivers are front and center on every puff article they publish, and the first names off the lips of every media talking head. Unfortunately Rivers has shown nothing to make his teammates believe he is the real deal. His shooting average for the season is pushing 25% now. But at least he shoots a lot.

All this makes Roberts look like the mature player that he is. If Brian can stay healthy, there is every reason for him to get mucho minutes and further his brand as a quality backup pg in the NBA.

I always thought Rivers was all about himself. He forces everything. I got a feeling if you had coach K drink truth serum and ask him if he is relieved the kid went pro he would say yes. Rivers will probably end up allright but I have seen nothing so far that says he will be a star in the league.

He will be afforded a lot more opportunities than BRob because of the investment and the fact that they are trying to sell tix for the future of the franchise.

Interesting comment from the Mavs announcer last night. "Dirk Nowitski has the utmost respect for Brian Roberts." Say what!? "Dirk is very much aware that Brian was a key player in 3 straight German Basketball League Championships".

Thank you Dirkster.

Roberts named one of the 15 biggest surprises of the NBA preseason by hoopsworld.com NBA writer Mike Kennedy:

http://www.hoopsworld.com/nba-presea...est-surprises/

"...He’s taken an unconventional route to the NBA, but he’s making the most of his opportunity and has been one of the pleasant surprises of the preseason."

Wrong board. This should be posted on the New Orleans one!

I always said, if I were playing late in a close game, he's the last player I want on the other team. Not much better if it was just a BIG game. Just ask Pitt...

Hornets v Rockets tonight 8pm

Hornets play at 8pm tonight on NBA TV.

With Austin Rivers and Eric Gordon out, Roberts could get a lot of playing time tonight.

Interesting comments from HC Monty Williams today when asked if Roberts could get more time at the 2 considering how shorthanded the Hornets are at that position because of injury:

"Monty Williams was asked if he will consider allowing Brian Roberts (8-for-20 three-point shooting in preseason) to play some shooting guard, but Williams said he wants Roberts to focus on his time at the 1."

http://www.nba.com/hornets/blog/shoo...rockets-102412

Update: Pre-game notes on Hornets website say that Roberts will start tonight at PG.
