Is he going to play point guard?
But seriously I am shocked but happy that he is still coming to Dayton. I will also be waiting for him to be officially cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse and play in an actual game. The NCAA is notoriously finicky about what happens with European players. Some of them are cleared with no problem while others like Enes Kanter are held in limbo and then not allowed to play.

My theory- loose lips sink ships.
Grant and staff have absolutely no reason to flap their jaws and tell the media and fan base who they are recruiting and when. They concentrate their efforts on taking the program to the next level, thus leaving all of us arm chair qb's guessing, and *****ing about the lack of info.
Great Job AG. I am betting he has a point guard or two up his sleeve as well.

Coaches can't comment on unsigned recruits per NCAA rules
Jablonski reported a week or so ago that Matej hadn't heard from Dayton. Something must of changed

Funny, 10,000 posts when someone leaves but just a handful when someone stays that no one thought would. I think this is good and proves that AG can sell his dream. Three of five stayed with a coach they hadn't met until a month ago. Good work. Now that elusive point guard. I am of the belief that we don't have to have two. Might be better to keep another scholarship in the hip pocket for next year when he has had a chance to lay some groundwork.

We should have 3 spots left right? Crosby, Carter, Wright; still not replaced.
A transfer PG and an incoming freshman would be great, but may not be possible. We'd still have an open spot.

In an ideal world it would be nice to get a grad transfer and a freshman.

Great news! I am far from an expert on recruits, but Svoboda sounded like someone who can play right away and fill a spot at anything from a stretch 4 to a 2 guard. Welcome Matej!

Yep, 3 spots left. Hopefully a grad transfer PG a freshman PG and another grad transfer that can make an immediate impact at the 2 or the 5 spot.

Welcome Matej! You won't be sorry for furthering your education at the University of Dayton. As you have already experienced at the Duquesne game the fans will make the Arena rock especially when you start raining three's!
I can picture he, Jordan Davis, Josh Cunningham, Kostas and XW in the lineup at the same time!

Inside scoop from Ray Harper. He waited until today because he did not want to sign an LOI to Dayton University. He signed with the University of Dayton instead.

That would surprise me. At one point I went back and look at Grant's recruiting classes at Alabama and VCU, and he got kids from a lot of different places, but Europe wasn't one. Scouting European talent seems like a more longer range goal, but hopefully Matej has success at Dayton and it opens some doors over there.

Do you really think he's here to further his education? He's 20 years old and most likely hasn't been in school for 2 years depending on how the educational system works in the Czech Republic. I would be shocked to see him play 4 years and be a 24 or 25 year old senior.

Different cultures. Don't underestimate how big a deal it is for young Europeans to come to the good ole red, white, and blue, US of A. (Que the waving flags and MAGA hats!)

"I'm excited to add Matej to our program," Grant said. "His skill set and experience against high-level competition make him unique among most college freshmen. Someone who has his size and shooting ability will fit into our style of play very quickly. He's is excited to be a part of the Flyer basketball family and we're very happy to have him."

Svoboda - Welcome to the family.
3 out of 5 signed - is a lot better than the 0 for 2 Archie had. And of of the two that did not come it sounds like AG actually suggested he go to prep school.
3 Open spots for us to get two good PG's

I would highly doubt he has been cleared already. The NCAA clearinghouse does fall sports first, and with so many football players waiting on grades and test scores, I would doubt they have started on the winter sports yet.

From the game film I watched he's really not a 4. He's more Jimmie Binnie than Charles Little in my opinion from the very limited film I saw. But who knows, maybe he has the skills and just didn't play there in that particular game.

Kostas got ruled a non qualifier right before last year because of clearinghouse issues with his classes he took in Greece I think
m21 is right I think these things usually run pretty close to the season. Enes Kanter got ruled ineligible in November
Omer Yurtseven a Turkish player who was a freshman for NC State this year missed the first nine games while they were sorting out his eligibility
Never know with the NCAA

My stance with Svoboda even when he first committed in February was that we won't know if he is cleared until just before the season and when he actually steps on the court for a real game. There are just too many unknowns with European guys and how the NCAA will treat them.

No, he lost 2 of 5 recruits (Wright and Carter), not 3. So keeping facts in and telling you you're wrong....just for the fun of it! (I'd put a smiley face here but I'm icon and emoji illiterate)

Welcome Matej!
I think he will help this year. i'm not that surprised he is still coming. I would think he has serious nba aspirations after playing on national teams. I think Anthony's experience in the nba would be a major draw, it trumps Archie's player development profile. Anthony understands all of the skill sets necessary to succeed in the nba.

I assumed after reading weeks ago from Jablonski that AG hadn't made contact with Svoboda that there was at least one side that wasn't interested. But it seemed strange as time went by that no further mention was made after the original report that said there'd been no contact from AG. I said I wouldn't be surprised if he still signed. Usually an international kid's decision is more thoroughly researched and has more going in its favor than a couple bullet points, that is your typical american kid's approval standard. So yeah it's been a pleasant surprise. But I still had hope out on this one that he would sign. I look for him to make his mark as a finisher around the hoop. Really liked the completeness of the player as I watched his video. Great news.

Grant can spin it as having coached Durant, Westbrook, etc. It's a positive for sure. But he's an NBA assistant coach who got fired from his last college gig. So I do think you are overrating it a tad. Archie Miller, particularly at Indiana, is absolutely a bigger name right now than Anthony Grant. But whereas Archie may be a better coach than Anthony, Grant may be a better recruiter than Archie. Personality-wise, it certainly seems like something that would come more natural to Grant.

I agree with you. There's some kind of assumption on here that the NBA can be sold on grabbing a player who hasn't been as developed as they could've been. At least that's what I'm getting when people say that AM is better at developing a player but AG knows how to get them to the NBA. That really makes no sense unless there's a good ol boys network that determines who gets drafted.

Unless you are a highly respected, tenured, assistant in the NBA, you are basically on the outside looking in to a billionaires club. IF Ok City Thunder had an opening in a summer league (that is somewhat a showcase for drafted players and Sophomore bench players), Grant might be able to insert a talented player's name in the hat for consideration. But AG would have to believe there is an untapped talent that flew under the radar, because AG's rep is on the line as soon as he makes that call. That scenario the farthest thing from an NBA pipeline.

I think this may be the one:
Lukáš Svoboda's Beer Tapping School
Get the tank give you beer as crisp as a frosty morning!
As practice makes the master, master barman Lukáš Svoboda will put you behind the bar and teach you how to tap the various typical types of beer: Hladinka (Smooth, half brew and half foam in the glass), Šnyt (Shnit, two fingers of beer, three fingers of foam, and one finger of empty glass), Mlíko (Milk, a beer almost entirely of foam), Na dvakrát (Crisp, the standard pour, full glass of beer with suds whispering at the top of the glass), řezané (Cut Beer, a blend of light and dark beer)... You will be educated in beer history and learn everything about beer's intricate journey to the pint. To keep hunger off, we will prepare the right kind of snacks. At the end of the class, you will receive a certificate and a present.
Price: CZK 3,200 per person
Classes are for groups of 4–8 and take place from 1pm to 5pm at Lokál U Bílé kuželky.

Is it something to worry about where the article says "...he has had a solid professional career thus far..."
Can NCAA student athletes qualify as amateurs if they have had prior professional careers as players overseas?

You can play with a professional team as long as you don't get compensated. From what I understand that happens with younger players

Nothing to worry about there. He plays as an amateur for a professional team, meaning he's not paid. Sports are not linked to education as they are in America, so you can't just play for your high school. The top athletes in Europe align themselves with a club, where they may have the choice of going pro or preserving their amateur status. I suspect the club may cover housing and possibly the education for Svoboda so it may be somewhat similar to a university experience in that regard.

The only compensation difference I perceive between European pro rules and US pro rules is where and when they hand you the sealed envelope. The NCAA would have fun with this one.

The envelope is a little thinner in Europe, unless of course you play futbol.

The professional clubs can cover education, provided they give the money directly to the school. If the money is given to the player to give to their school - the NCAA will not clear them (see Kanter, Enes)

See Baylor, North Carolina, KY, Louisville.

The clearinghouse of the NCAA is definitely that = "quirky", however the NCAA enforcement section is just as "quirky".
See Baylor, North Carolina, KY and Louisville and their recent history with no severe repercussions.
NC has had that academic scandal for how many years? And still no findings?
The NCAA is too busy finding all the issues with the non-power schools.

I think we are in violent agreement. In no way do I think US universities are clean. Just as I believe that European pro sports are not 100% conforming to their own rules about not compensating student professionals.

I don't know if Isaiah would agree with your narrative.

I have an Isaiah Thomas story. Many, many, many years ago I was flying into Chicago for business and the plane had to circle forever due to bad weather. So here it is about 1 am in the morning at the rental car counter and it was me and Isaiah Thomas. He was running Vancouver's pro team at the time. Was in town for his mom's birthday. We started talking. He knew my brother. Said he loved football better than basketball. He always stops to watch football, even if he is driving down the street and sees a Pop Warner kids team playing. I told him my brother loved basketball more than football and we laughed that life took them both in different directions than their preferred sport.
Then he went to put a credit card down for his rental car - it was Vancouver's company card - and it wouldn't go thru. We both had a good laugh about company credit cards and I told him it's happened to me once when I was entertaining a client for dinner. Way more embarrassing than his current situation. I've always wondered if we would cross paths again if he would remember our first encounter. Life is funny that way.
And for the record, yes I know there is a younger Isaiah Thomas in the NBA.
