UD takes set 3, 27-25. That's after we had 3 service errors in 4 attempts.

Subbing in Sarkissan and Winner to block also means we have a Libero/DS who can bump set the ball to the hitters. When we bring in a blocking specialist, itís for the setter. If they brought in two subs to block, that would be new.

It wasn't at the same time. But yes, replaced the setter.

I can live with these scores w/no Lexi. All the games were nip and tuck. Couple points either way in all of them.

A few observations from a rather ill informed technical volleyball fan...

UK represented well with fans. Not a surprise, but I saw way more UK fans than UD from the upper corners of the fieldhouse.
No obvious hitting stud. Got way used to JPet bailing us out when we needed a tough point. Team seemed to be searching during those times. Not a bad thing, just different. It 'feels' like a deeper pool of talented hitters.
Back row will be ok. Had some errors to be sure. But coverages seemed good to me. And there were times UK was sending some pretty wicked hits their way.
Blocking has some work to do. Granted UK has good to great hitters. But many of their hits were right over set blockers. Maybe got better as the game progressed. But I was hoping a bigger pool of hitters would lead to more 'inspired' blocking.
Setting is going to be interesting this year. Livie was solid and likely starter. But I thought Brooke Nichols has several really good quick sets. Pace and/or timing seemed another level quicker with Brooke (just my opinion). I did not see Miller set (left towards end of 4th set).

All in all, seemed promising. Not quite sure I see top20 talent, but admittedly no Lexie and a lot of new people in new roles. So lots of room for growth.

Miller came in to serve for Nichols in the fourth, and she served an error and then Nichols subbed back in.

Figgie commented on the serving and Keats on the blocking. This seems to be a trend the last several years../we are t very good at the beginning of the year. So I wonder if it has to do with what they’ve spent time on during preseason camp at this point. Blocking is a process between mostly 2 hitters. This year they will have at least 2 new OHs that the middles have to work with to put up a block. I’m sure they are still looking for those 2 new OHs. So I can understand that. Serving is another issue. Me, myself and I can come in early or stay late to work on serving if it hasn’t been a big part of practices to date. And the same for the entire summer. It’s hard to duplicate the pressure of a match, but there are ways to come close. I hope we don’t start slow on serving as we have the last few years. We get better as the season goes on, but our biggest match come early.

I was looking yesterday to see if there has been any matches slotted for tv this year. I hate the pre-conference tournaments that donít stream ever match. Recent trend is to only stream the home team matchesÖso you get 1 of 3. I know it costs money. But I would take even just streaming video with no announcers or student broadcast journalism students for those matches to keep costs down to basically nothing. Sometimes we donít even have live stats, but that is few.

Obviously Lexi playing would make a difference but I love hearing how tight the games were with newer hitters getting into the mix. With the loss of JPete it'll be critical for 1 or 2, besides Lexi, to pick up the slack.

Yes it will. There will be 1 or 2 freshmen getting rotations in the back row replacing Maura and Liz. Then we will have two new outside hitters replacing JPete and Mahalia. I think most people thought Livie worked really hard to get better last year and was rewarded with A10 SOY. But no one expected Brooke to rollover and accept a back up role. Brooke was our starting setter at this time last year. So Setter is a battle and that helps players get better.
