Cincinnati Match

I should have sent Chris a note to start the 2022 Match Thread. My bad.

So we’ll use this.

Starters on Twitter are Karissa, Amelia, Brooke, Layne, Livie and Anna. 2 setters? That’s a surprise or a mistake?

Ok...id say injuries are an issue. A big issue. We have 5’8” Freshman Karissa Kaminski playing OH. Same with 5’11” Grace Dynda. Both have been blocked. But Taylor Russell is looking good. We better be able to pass so we can get our middles sets. How many injuries do we have? Basically we only have 2 OHs healthy? That’s what it looks like.

It’s 17-19 UC but I have no idea how we are even in this match. I do think we have a couple freshmen playing well. Taylor’s swing looks good. Kaminski is playing OH and going 6 rotations. She’s holding her own against some big odds. And Liana came in to plat right OH and she and Amelia put up 3 big blocks.

20-21 UC. We are serving. I think it’s Taylor. She had 3 aces in a row for her first serves as a Flyer. We could use a couple more right now.

UC goes on 4-0 run to close out the first set. We need more from our MBs. Gotta pass well to get them the ball. Layne took 1 swing after we had 20 points. In other words late. Her only swing. With our injuries, we need a heck of a lot more swings from Layne. She has 1 block. Amelia has 3 blocks.

We are splitting setting duties. I’m not sure it’s a 2 setter offense because both appeared to play back row. I think it’s a sub in for each other.

Craziest Flyer line up I’ve ever seen. Just settle down and get a good pass to the setter.

UD was down 9-14 but have battled back to tie it at 18-18.

UD up 22-19. Hang in there ladies and even this match. Close it out. Limit the errors and get a good pass.

Kill by Amelia from Livie for a 25-21 set win. We have got to get the ball to our MBs. You have to pass well to do that and our setters have to deliver. It’s even after being down 9-14. Great fight. Lord help us. I’m pretty sure everyone who is healthy is playing. Taylor Russell is the real thing.

4-0 UD on 3 kills by Amelia. With our OH “issue” you have to go to the middle. They are our most experienced hitters. MBs are the hardest to stop and it will free up our OHs who need all the help they can get.

6-0 UD on a block from Amelia and 5’8” Karissa. TO UC. Amelia is really stepping up. We need to get Layne going too.

We needed all of those first 6 points to win the 3rd set. Down 21-22, we made no errors to close out the set 26-24. Blk by Layne & Grace. Ace by Livie. Kill by Layne. Kill by Livie. Kill by Grace. No errors was the key. Do not give them any points when it’s close. That’s how you close it out.

UD leads 2-1.

Yates just went positive hitting percentage with 4 kills. She has 3 blocks. We need her to step up this set to close it out in 4.

My video is behind live stats. So I noticed Taylor is going 6 rotations early in this 4th set. She just scored from the back row on a really good swing.

Ace by Anna to get the win for Dayton. 25-18 in the 4th. We hit 0.90 for the match. We had people in the front row taking more than 50 swings that will not be anywhere near the net when we get healthy. I have no idea how we won. We certainly have fight and no fear. That will serve us well. I think one big key to the match was Amelia taking over early in the 2nd set. We lose that set and I would have bet big bucks we go down 0-3. Instead people just kept getting better and figuring it out. They keyed on Taylor late because she was killing them fir the first 2.5 sets. If she can play 6 rotations she is gong to be dynamite. I’ll wait at least 6-9 matches into the season...but she might be ahead of JPete in her first year. Way too early to make that call, but a great start for her. She was terrific and will learn from those late swings she got blocked.

Livie had a double-double and lead the team in digs and assists. Early our setting didn’t look too great by either setter. But Livie settled down and was clearly the better setter as the match progressed.

Finally, Karissa. You’re a freshman in your first DI match and somewhere during the week you end up being told you will be playing OH. You’re a DS/L. Sure you hit some in high school. It’s not a problem doing that at 5’8” at the prep level. And no she is not the phenom II. There is only one Lexie Almodovar phenom in this program. Lighting has not struck twice. But what a trooper. She got blocked a boatload but kept on coming. All the while digging up 11 balls like she expected to do this year. That was 3rd the team.

Like I said...this team has fight. Last year we seemed to not have that trait early on. And even at the end, it was nothing like I saw tonight.

Someone asked me who Layne was. That’s Alayna Yates. I picked that up off of Alyssa D’Errico’s twitter account back in her freshman year. Sorry for the confusion. I’ve just always used it since then.

Kaminski and Russell had 53% of our swings tonight. Thats nuts for a true frosh and a redshirt frosh playing their first ever college match on the road against a solid program. I dont know how good UC will be this year but they are never garbage. Sometimes they are great.

As BeckyTXA said, Kaminski being asked to be an outside hitter was a big ask tonight. That's like asking your goalie in soccer to suddenly play striker. You dont win many matches hitting .090 on the road but somehow we grinded this one out. Could have gone either way. About 4-5 critical points flips this from an L to a W.

Agree that we needed our bigs to feast and it didnt work out that way. Thats where this team's strength is compared to most opponents. It may take some time w/figuring out the long-term setting situation. Im sure TH is still tinkering.

First order of business is getting Lexie back. That alone will improve our hitting. We played a ton of young players. If nothing else if they can show this kind of grit it will bode well as it speaks to their competitiveness.

Serves were good when they needed to be. Cincy blocked the living tar out of us but a lot of that was the goofy lineup we had to throw out there and for all of that -- we got 11 blocks ourselves.

Florida State will be a different level of challenge. A program like UD usually needs all hands on deck to have a chance in these kinds of matches. We shall see.

Ill St took a set off Florida St. but FL hit .289 as a team. Considering our OH situation, we are going to need our block. The good news is it looked pretty good tonight. Sure Cincy had a huge blocking night against three freshmen, one of who should never play the front row at this level, a walk on and our two MBs. We are going to get blocked with this line up. And everyone will have video to study tendencies which make avoiding the block even more difficult. We have to counter that with a great block on our side of the net. The good news is we have 3 players who averaged more than 1.0 b/set. Of course it’s only one match, but we have never had more than 2. We will need our block to be big tomorrow.

Was at the game, visiting daughter. You could feel the emotions on the team- Nervous and anxious to start. But yet calm. Play had massive swings, from down right 'not good' to very promising. All coaches really working their butts off. (Admittedly, I enjoyed watching bench after nearly every play. Very 'engaged'.)

Cannot emphasize enough the earlier comments on Karissa. My initial thoughts were that she would eventually challenge for the libero jersey. Her back row instincts are that good. But then she starting hitting the ball well. Maybe lost some hitting confidence during middle of match. But still found ways to get some much needed kills. Feels like she could range from immediate 'glue guy' type player to an absolute stud.

Torn as to how good this team could be. But the injuries will seriously set the tone for the season. Hope for quick recoveries, and then a quick meshing with chemistry.

I’m not sure Karrissa will even play OH today. We don’t know when the 4 out of 6 OHs went out. I saw Brooke on the sidelines not dressed out, but not Lexie, McNeel or Otten. They might not have made the trip. If Brooke traveled my gut says she was suppose to play left OH. It might have been only a couple hours to figure out who else could play OH if Brooke went down in the pre-match walk-thru earlier in the day??? We don’t know the details.

All of FL St hitters are 6’1” to 6’4”. If they can hit down the line, and we go with the same line up, that’s hitting over 5’8” and 5’11”. They will score in most of those cases.

From where I sit…several hundred miles away from seeing any practice sessions…I might go with Grace and Taylor on the left and use Lindsey and/or Liana on the right. That gives us way more height along the net. All over 6’2” except Grace at 5’11” in one Left pin slot. We’ve done well with one 5’11” OH in the past. Think Amanda Cowdrey and Alayna Turner.

Here is the issue…at least one person has to go 6 rotations or you run out of substitutions. That’s going to have to be Grace or Taylor. Grace has played back row in limited action in the past as a serving specialist. Taylor got some time going 6 last night in the 4th set. That might have been a set up for today. This is why TH had to go with Karissa at OH yesterday. You have to have someone go 6. You like having 2 playing all around. But you have to have at least one. Karissa might be our Libero later in the year, but today she will be either an OH or a DS. So if she starts out at DS, she can be moved to the front row if needed if Grace or Taylor are struggling in the back row.

Being Coach isn’t as easy as you think. It’s not like basketball where you can sub anyone in at any time for anyone on the court as many times as you want. In vball you only get 15 subs per set and you have to stay in order/rotation. Players are locked into a spot in the rotation once they take the court. So if your Libero gets hurt during a set, you can’t move your next best player into her spot. You have to bring in a player who hasn’t played yet. And she has to go to the locker room to get a colored jersey so the refs knows who doesn’t count against your subs. The Libero doesn’t count against your subs, but she has to stay in her rotation spot. She also can’t jump above the net, which is why she can’t play front row. Once the set is over, you can reshuffle the rotation and get your 2nd best player in the Libero spot.

And now we know why Karissa was playing OH last night. We needed someone at OH who could go 6 rotations. She hit in high school, I don’t think Anna or Emily hit in high school. So it was Karissa. She was fearless last night playing in an impossible situation.
