Florida International Match

They lost to ASU yesterday 1-3. They are 0-4 but have had a tough schedule so far. Iowa, Oklahoma, ASU and Gonzaga who I know nothing about. And more tough matches next week before hosting a pretty weak tournament before their conference schedule. Their record will improve and their win percentage will be solid by year end.

All that said, they know our roster issues and they will be coming for us. They are looking for their first win and Dayton looks like a good opportunity. We will need to be ready to play. The one thing I saw last night was our teamís body language against GA Tech was good. Nobody was hanging their head in a match they werenít going to win. They were celebrating good plays and teeing it up for the next point. I expect they are ready to get after it today and not roll over after two losses.

Flyers get by 3-1 after dropping first set. Every set was decided by the skin of the teeth. Could have gone either way. We will take it.

FIU was picked to finish 7th in Conference USA, but I think there is reason to questions that predicted finish.

FIU finished 6-6 in CUSA last year, which was good enough for a 3 way tie for 5th place, so theoretically, 7th if they lost tiebreakers. Preseason rankings can be helpful. But the more questions marks a team has, the more a coach may be hesitant to change anything from the previous year.

Like I said in a different thread this team is majority transfer. With a roster of 18 players, 12 were transfers. Transfers from everywhere (Oregon, UNC, Hofstra, Delaware, UMBC, Boise State, etc.)

This team also has more height than you would expect from a team picked to finish 7th. Amelia Moore had an equal on the other side of the net in 6'5" Athina Dimitriadis.

FIU also has experience. Of the players who have played in every set, 2 are grad students, 1 is a senior, 1 is a junior, 1 a sophmore, and 1 a true freshman.

Schedules say a lot about teams too, and FIU has a challenging schedule. I think their schedule will have them ready for CUSA play. While they are 0-6 right now, that includes losses to Georgia Tech, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Arizona St. 4 teams from the big conferences.

The C-USA is home to Western Kentucky and Rice. Two teams with a lot of recent volleyball success. This team doesn't need to win the C-USA to be considered a strong win, even a 3rd or 4th finish would mean they could have a bubble RPI. Lets hope this collection of transfers can figure it out and pick up some wins.
