Villanova Match

Friday night at 7 pm UD us hosting Villanova in its home opener. They are 3-3 just like the Flyers, but their schedule has been much weaker. The one top tier match was a 0-3 loss to USC. Two of their 3 wins were 2-3 battles with Colgate and New Hampshire. They play two matches today. Missouri State today at 11am before the Flyers tonight. It will be a challenging weekend for Villanova, but we canít overlook anyone with our short roster.

AndÖspeaking of our roster, based on last week interviews, we should see Lexie back. After being out for 3 weeks with an illness, she might need to ease back into playing shape/form. If she is available to play on Friday I would not be surprised to see her dressed on the sidelines and only see limited time to ease back into competition. Taylor and Grace have both played well. The third OH has been a committee of players patched together playing out of position to get the team through this shortage. We also have freshman Mia Otten who returned last week with another week of practice that will help. As a freshman who sustained an injury during preseason camp, every minute she picks up in practice is critical to catch up on learning our systems, etc.

We should beat Villanova even without Lexie or Brooke Smith, who is in a boot and not expected back until next weekend at the earliest. But getting Lexie back is huge, even if she is limited tonight. We need her tomorrow.

I hope you are right and the coaches are right about Lexie being back this weekend. Lexie contributes in a bunch of different ways, so having her on the court could make a lot of difference. Not only is her speed and power capable of commanding some focus on the left side pin, I think the Flyers could use her serve as well.

Amelia, Anna, and Grace have really stood out to me in the first two weekends and are true keys to a successful season. Amelia's blocking numbers are up there with the best. 1.44 blks/set is where Amelia stands right now. Here are some of the best 12 full season blocking numbers for Dayton Flyer middles.

1.) Lindsay Fletemier 1.54 blks/s (2010)
2.) Megan Campbell 1.43 blks/s (2011)
3.) Megan Campbell 1.34 blks/s (2013)
4.) Faye Barhorst 1.31 blks/s (2006)
5.) Isolde Hannan 1.31 blks/s (2013)
6.) Isolde Hanna 1.28 blks/s (2012)
7.) Lindsay Fletemier 1.25 blks/s (2009)
8.) Alayna Yates 1.24 blks/s (Spring 2021)
9 & 10.)Amber Erhahon 1.22 blks/s (2016, & 2017)
11.) Amelia Moore 1.20 blks/s (2021)
12.) Olivia Dubay 1.18 (2019)

Serving is a big component of the game and Anna has excelled so far. Anna has 10 service aces with only 5 service errors. This is a great success to error rate and no other Flyer has more aces than errors. Anna has 0.40 aces per set and that is a strong number. To beat the best teams you have got to serve aggressively to take them out of system. Services aces is a good measure of a servers ability to take them out of system. ).40 aces per set is higher than the best from 2021 when both Jaime and Lexie led the team with 0.37 aces per set.

Grace is contributing in just about every way possible. She is tied for most digs per set at 2.40, she is 2nd in hitting percentage (if you don't include our setter Livie), she is second in blockers per set at 0.84, and has 0.20 service aces per set (good for 3rd on the team). The most encouraging piece of information may be that all of her aces came in the 2nd weekend. She has 5 total (1 vs. FIU, 2 vs Arizona St. and 2 vs. GT) Let's hope after a week in this role she got more comfortable and was able to focus a little more on the serving aspect of the game.

Taylor has at times been really good, so by the end of the year, I think she will be added to this list of 3. She has hit well, and during the first weekend she served really well.

Getting Lexie back, would do a lot. It would add our best returning server from last year and it would switch Karissa Kaminski, hitting 0.037 with Lexie, who hit 0.202 last year. Lexie also blocked twice as good as Karissa has been blocking (0.30 blks/s to 0.16 blks/s) I also think we could see a cascade effect, by moving Karissa to a back row defense only role, letting her focus solely on back row defense, where it sounds like she excels.

Villanova dropped a 5 set match to MO St earlier today. Here we go again, playing a team just after they come up short in a match they probably thought they would win. We need to come out tiring on all cylinders. Being our first home match, I think we will.

MSU vs Illinois just now going to 4th set. Delayed start for the Flyers most likely.

Flyers win the first 25-19. Lexie is on Fire. After getting blocked on her first swing she’s taken 7 more swings and scored on 6 of them. It’s insane. Biggest surprise, we have no blocks. Also Winner and Nichols started for Yates and Sandt.

Karissa serving this set instead of Taylor. They are both good servers, so not really a surprise Horsmon is splitting that duty.

Villanova takes the 2nd 23-25. Our passing was not as good this set. We were not as crisp in execution. We can clean all that up. We did get 2.5 blocks that set including a triple.

So Miller has come in to serve and set some. That has to add up to Livie is not available - injured or ill? Nichols played setter The first two sets except those couple rotations Miller came in.

UD Up 2-1 taking the 3rd set 25-18. It wasnít that close. We lead big from the beginning. We got a little sloppy right at the end. But we played better. Passed betted and blocked well. We have 7.5 blocks for the match after getting none in the first set.

Sandt is dressed out so this might be Horsmon getting Nichols and Miller some experience. It could also be a minor injury where she could have played if needed.

It’s going to take 5. Flyers drop the 4th set 23-25. We need to jump on them quick and get a lead in the 5th. All hands on deck to close this match out.

I think it's very interesting. She's played all 6 games before tonight, and yet nothing at all in this game. If it was for some experience, you would assume Horsmon thought it would be a victory one way or another, which you wouldn't normally think possible. Or, practice this week went a certain way and Sandt didn't do as well for one reason or another. Or she missed a practice and this was a team rule that you sit out. Or an injury. Or not letting the other teams see her in this game so it's a surprise tomorrow. Or. Or. Or.

She was involved in the pre-game drills, so that would seem that it's not an injury. But, I'm just a stats guy.

Down to the wire. Wow, good game, back and forth. Horsmon got a yellow card if people didn't realize that. He was upset about a call 1 or 2 points earlier, and kept spouting off I guess, and he got one. Surprised the Villanova coach didn't get one, he was not pleased at some points in the 4th and 5th set. I almost thought that the 2 coaches were going to have a shouting match at each other at 1 point.

I watched on and off. Great volleyball. Really exciting.

This team is so deep. Switch setters and still get the win. I thought Brooke Nichols did a good job with her sets to our middles. The numbers seem to agree. Lindsey Winner was 4 of 7 no errors. A. Yates was 5 of 10 with only 1 error.

Anna continues to serve well. 2 aces, 1 error.
Grace had 13 digs, 7 block assists.

I only saw about 20 total points as I was cooking dinner. I would have thought with Lexie we'd have had an easier time with a Nova team that hasn't really done anything this year. I guess thats the bad news that we needed to scrape by in five sets. The good news is we won the match. They all count in November.

Man Id really like to get 2 wins on Saturday but I'm hoping its 1-1. Could be 0-2 if we're not ready. Missouri State also beat Nova in 5 and took a set off #25 Illinois. Some home cookin' would be nice.

Man Id really like to get 2 wins on Saturday but I'm hoping its 1-1. Could be 0-2 if we're not ready. Missouri State also beat Nova in 5 and took a set off #25 Illinois. Some home cookin' would be nice.
Switching setters isnít an easy thing to do. A lot of nuances you donít always see or realize. No idea what Sandt issue is. Agree with figgie on this one. I would hope she goes today.

Lexie started off really hot, but hitting-wise finished at .152. Thatís not great but with 46 swings her first match back, Iíll take it. Being out 3 weeks With an illness, you are not going to be in game-shape. The fact she could go 5 sets was impressive, including playing 6 rotations. Camera angels didnít show all the subs, and figgie reported her subbing out some, but she was in there swinging and digging balls from the back row a lot of the match. Hopefully her body bounces back and she gets stronger for todayís matches.

Finally, Horsmonís MO historically is to find his rotation by conference play and stick with it. It will be interesting to see if he does that this year. In the past, it may have been players separated themselves from those playing behind them and it just looked like TH had his 8-9 players. This year itís all turned upside down. Grace and Taylor have been great in so many areas. Will Brooke Smith take over the right side when she is healthy? If so, will Grace still play back row to give us another hitter on the court? After the first match I compared a Taylor to JPete. She seriously looks like JPete on the court. Their swings are very similar and to be honest, Taylor looks farther along as a freshman. Brooke Westbeld did the ESPN commentary last night. She said the same thing about Taylor, and Brooke and JPete played club together before coming to UD. This was only the 3rd match Iíve watched, but I think Taylor is the real thing.

And finally, there is definitely a competition going on between Lindsey and Layne for the MB2 spot. It might not be resolved by conference play. One of these two has to take their game to the next level sooner rather than later.

Interesting stat...in the sets we won, we sided-out at over 60%. In the sets we lost, each by only 2 points, we sided-out in the 40s.

It all comes down to that first touch on serve receive. You have to pass the ball well. And on the flip side, you have to serve aggressively so they can’t pass the ball well. In line with that is we are taking too many service errors right now (other team is serving aces at us). It’s up and down the roster, and we have been patching together players all over the court just to play. But it’s an area we have to improve.

Another thing I noticed is when we hit or served out last night, we were just missing by inches. A couple attacks got away from hitters. But for the most part, our errors were dang close to being on the line and good. A couple minor adjustments and that can be improved.

I almost thought that the 2 coaches were going to have a shouting match at each other at 1 point.
Couldnít believe their coach didnít get a yellow. Coach H was talking to the official and the Villanova coach start yelling at our coach. That should have been one. another one should have been given when he stepped on the court and threw his towel down, crying about a point.

I wonder if we have the backend of a contract with them? My guess is no...but maybe. This was only the 2nd time the programs have met according to the announcers. First time was in the NCAAs.
