Wright St II Match

This is clearly not a must win match butÖ

We need to come out strong. Stay focused and put this team away early. We need that for our psyche heading into A10 play. We lived on smoke and mirrors the first two weeks or so because no one had much video of the players we rolled out on the court. No way to study tendencies and habits. Thatís no longer the case. Plenty of video to break down and prepare for and itís showing up on the court. But mostly we have to raise our game so we can string together some point runs and less serving errors will help that as long as we can remain aggressive. The following comment is based on seeing very little game video this year so far, but when I have watched, we seem to be hitting into the net more than usual. Itís one thing to go long because youíre going for a deep aggressive serve. Into the net is mental more than anything, or should I say a lack of focus on your toss.

Iíll also throw out the following speculationÖthe last few years we have started the season with lots of errors. But we worked it out about this time each year. I do wonder if thatís how the coaches plan it? Maybe their focus now is to be 2/3rds aggressive and 1/3rd focused on in. That would be a training thing. But eventually they flip that and put the biggest focus on ďiní. Iím spinning my wheels here for an answer. It is funny I looked at the stats last night and said, ďWho the heck serves up 15 errors in 4 sets? Thatís terrible.Ē Then I looked at Wichita St stats and see they did the same. I got a laugh out of it. But it had to be a terribly painful match to watch with 30 service errors.

We go to work again today. We need to find a way to play well for longer periods of time in each set.

The coaches appear to be working as hard as I have seen in my casual fandom of past 'several' years. I had really nice sight lines at yesterdays match, where I could easily scan from the play on the court to coaches.
In total disclosure, I have always enjoyed watching coaches interaction. And I really like this coaching staff. Good balance of 'wearing emotion on sleeve' to 'cool and calming influence'.

I am hoping a little time off allows some mental refresh as well as hopefully some injuries to rejoin the team play.

NCAA,s are probably a stretch given the performance so far. But you never know, lots of matches yet to go

As Chris R has mentioned, it's A10 Tournament or bust at this point. Their RPI is just not going to be good enough, and there aren't going to be top 50 wins to get an at-large bid. Loyola-Chicago just lost 3 straight as well, and are now in the high-80s RPI wise so that is 2 Top-50 possible wins that may no longer be there at the end of the season. (Especially if we beat them...)

Ball State is now in the 60s, so we have a shot, and Illinois State is in the 110s, so those are our best 4 chances of getting Top 50 wins, but we'd also have to get our RPI into the top 50, and I think that ship has sailed.

My advice, enjoy the team as it is, and cheer on the Flyers in the A10 Tournament.

Agree with this. We got a lot better during conference play last year. We were not a good team early in the year. IF WE CAN GET HEALTHY...there is talent.

We haven’t seen Brooke Smith, so she is a wild card.

Freshman Taylor Russell is the real deal. She’s a left OH that was just starting to get some rotations in the back row while swinging well from the front. She is ahead of JPete in their freshmen years.

Lexie appeared a little rusty coming back, but is beginning to raise her play to a consistent level. We need her best during conference play and her leadership on the court as she goes 6 rotations.

Amelia has been the best player so far. Very consistent, but ironically not as productive this past weekend. As our best player, Teams will be game-planning to stop her. She will have to raise her game to counter that extra attention.

I don’t think Yates was playing well early, but the last 3 matches she is starting to up her game. She was in on 4 straight blocks in a row last night. Nobody keeps that stat, but I’m sure we have never scored 4 points in a row off blocks. I remember that match against X back in 2009 or 2010 down in Cincy that was an absolute block-fest, and we didn’t have 4-blocks in a row. She is also starting to swing better, but it’s a work in progress.

Same with Anna. I don’t think Anna was playing her best early, but this week she seemed to take it to a new level. Just like blocking, playing the back row is a process of spacing and coverage based on who is next to you.
She’s had a bunch of different players back there with her. It’s starting to settle in to who is back there with her and that’s going to help. Not to mention she’s been mentoring two freshmen DS players. We will need her to Continue to up her game and leadership.

Grace & Karrissa have been in the starting rotation all season. At times they have made major contributions including playing out of position and way out of position. What happens when we get 100% healthy will be what it will be, but these two players just have to stay focused on getting better everyday and let the chips fall. They will be in the mix. It’s their job to make it dang tough to keep them off the court.

Lindsey-Mia-Liana-Brooke Nichols & Alyssa. They have all been in the starting rotation at some point in this first part of the season and also used as specialists during matches. They have all found ways to contribute. They all need to continue to find ways to contribute when called on. Just keep working hard to get better. That’s what this team needs, players pushing for playing time, and getting it.

Livie. She made huge improvements last year during conference play. We will need her to do the same again this year. We always seem to have 3 freshmen in the rotation or playing big roles as specialists. Adding in Brooke Smith in some role is another “new” player. This team appears to be missing the “ glue” that holds it all together and make it work. I see the setter as that glue this year. The past couple years JPete has been that glue...the player who could dictate the flow of a set. The following is always true, but I think it’s especially true for this team...we have got to set our Middles. This hasn’t been Livie’s best sets. The timing and placement to the MBs has not been crisp. This has been true for sets both behind the setter (the slide) and quick, low sets in front of the setter. You have to pass well to set your MBs, but both Miller and Nichols seem to be better at setting the Middles. Livie and her Middles need to raise this part of the game. It takes all parties putting in the extra time and reps.

Finally, serve and serve receive. We don’t get passing scores, but we’ve given up too many aces and we’ve committed too many service errors. We are getting beat at the service line in too many sets. Work to be done to clean this up.

Challenge Accepted!

(Well, sort of ... )

I don't have all stats, but I just loaded up the the 2020 season through this season, but some of the files don't have plays so I cannot go after them. It's actually a bit rare to get 2 blocks in a row for points, so 4 is amazing.

Last year, against Duquesne on 10/3/21, we had 3 points in a row by blocks. Yates/Swink, Yates/Peterson, Yates/Swink.

Itís interesting Yates was the MB for both of these - 3 consecutive blocks in 2021 and now 4 in 2022. And in both cases the blocks were executed on both the left and right sides. Thatís a lot of real estate for an MB to cover along the net.

Iíve seen some good things from this team this year, even though I couldnít watch some of the matches and others were not streamed. We have some very good talent. Amelia is playing so much better than last year when she was playing hurt. We just need to find a floor leader that can be the glue that keeps the level of play high and keeps the focus on the next play and stopping some of these runs that put us behind in sets. We havenít played from behind well because of our serving. Everyone has to work to be more consistent on serving and serve receive.

Normally I think the A10 conference hurts our program. It doesnít give us enough tough matches to prepare for NCAA 2nd round talent/matches. But this year it will help us. We still donít have our rotation set over several positions. A lot of work to be done. We have talent. How fast it comes together will determine our season.

Normally I hear you Jack72. And I am no WSU supporter.
But it was hard to not notice their 2019 & 2020 league banners and NCAA banners (1st round and 2nd round). WSU certainly was/is on the rise. Will be interesting to see what happens as they have a new coach. But their roster is evenly spread, but experienced.

As frustrating as it is to say this, but we clearly had the 2 best players on the floor, skill wise- Moore and Yates. But WSU played very well as a team with good energy and chemistry. That more than made up for those 2 middles.

For what it's worth, one mans opinion...
