Recall the Knicks will have a new GM soon https://www.si.com/nba/knicks/news/n...-gersson-rosas. A roster shake up will pretty much happen at some point as the new GM will need to show their worth.

Unless he's trading Randle, there's nothing to be done except for Obi to continue to suffer under Thibs. He's there for year 4, and if he declines a new contract after next year, he's still stuck with the Knicks for another year unless a team makes a qualifying offer that the Knicks don't match. By then, Obi will be 27, with 5 years of NBA service and not much to show for it. Obi should be demanding a trade, and making life difficult for the Knicks until they do so, again, barring a Randle trade. His career will be shortened by continuing to play in a system that he is ill-suited for.

I don't disagree but what leverage does he have to demand a trade? What does make life difficult for the Knicks mean? Should he get caught with an unregistered handgun in an nightclub? I don't really think Obi is the kind guy that intentionally makes things difficult on other people, which is good since his next GM and coach are watching.

I think there's a million miles between making things difficult for the coach and GM and displaying a handgun on Instagram. Players of all sorts make their unhappiness known, whether through agents, intermediaries, etc. Obi would hardly be the first guy to do so. Sure, he doesn't have much/any leverage. That doesn't mean he just has to sit there and hope for an improvement that may never come. This is his livelihood, and an opportunity to make life-changing wealth. The Knicks are screwing with that and need to be held to account.

And then on top of all that, Jacob Toppin was given a 2-Way contract with the Knicks. This should be fun huh? Thibs f’n over 2 Toppins?

Actually, the Knicks signing Jacob Toppin makes perfect sense because there are 2 corners in the halfcourt offense: left and right. Thibs can stick Obi in the left corner and Jacob in the right corner, which will leave the lane wide open for Brunson, Quickley, etc. to drive to the hoop. Pure genius!

According to NBA Analysis Network:

“According to league sources who were present, once the final buzzer sounded Toppin aired his grievances to Thibodeau,” Katz wrote. “The 24-year-old wants to play, and he wants to win. That evening, neither happened. An intense verbal altercation occurred between the player and coach as the group trekked to the Kaseya Center visiting locker room in Miami. It spilled into the postgame meeting once the doors closed."

“On this occasion, as Toppin yelled at Thibodeau in front of teammates so fresh off a loss that they were still in uniform, assistant coach Rick Brunson stepped in to stand up for his boss. Toppin and Brunson got into it for a moment. Randle, Evan Fournier and Josh Hart next pulled Toppin aside to cool him off.”

I wasn’t so sure this all actually happened when initially reported- now that it seems that it did, I hold Obi to an even higher level of admiration. Good for him for telling Tibasaurus how he feels. Effectively, this puts everyone in the Knicks organization on notice. Hopefully the Knicks trade him but if for some reason Obi is still at the end of the bench come next October, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him getting very little to any minutes/game. I hope Obi continues to work hard on things that matter because wherever he ends up following this debacle, he’ll need to show what skills he does have at that point.

Maybe this will get him traded, which I think needs to happen.

This happened during the playoffs. It didn't apparently have any effect leading up to and during the draft, as the Knicks made no moves regarding Obi. There's obviously still time, prior to the season, and even up to the trade deadline in February 2024, but at this point, it's like the Knicks refuse to recognize reality. Obi is not a fit for the team or Thibs philosophy. Unless they trade Randle, which is highly unlikely given their investment in him, Obi will continue to primarily get 12-15 minutes per game. The Knicks position is confounding. They don't want to get a losing return on the #8 draft pick, but they also won't give him the opportunity to showcase his talents to increase his trade value. Outside of Randle being hurt, when Obi has tended to shine, at least offensively, there's simply too few minutes for him. As to his defense, he may never be a stellar defender, but frankly, most of the Knicks defense is highly overrated, including Randle, who too often becomes disinterested if his shot isn't falling.

Obi has his limitations like any player but to exploit everything he can give you he needs to be in an offense that lets the thoroughbreds run. His defensive weaknesses however are way overblown. I saw a Tweet a week or two ago of the worst defensive players based on rating. I wish I had bookmarked it. RJ Barrett was Top-10 if memory serves and nobody is allowed to speak ill of RJ Barrett.

The handgun in the club was obvious hyperbole and a Plaxico Burress reference. There is a fine line to be walked between standing up for yourself and becoming a locker room cancer. The latter might not play well with teams otherwise interested in him. James Hardin can be an a-hole to everyone if he is unhappy, I am not sure Obi Toppin can.

I believe there was a fairly significant period of time during the playoffs that Obi was actually top 5 in defensive rating, (and I think he may have been #1 for a while). Take that with a grain of whatever. While I agree that his defensive weaknesses are way overblown, my eyes also tell me that he is not an elite defender at this point in his career. Seems like nowadays it is all about being a "switchable defender" and I think he has the attributes to check that box as long as he isn't being switched onto Damien Lillard or someone with comparable quickness.

What you say makes sense and seems to correctly point out the contradictions.

But I find that when there are contradictory facts, there is usually another fact I don't know. For example:
1. The Knicks front office expects Obi to out-last Thibs.
2. The Knicks front office expects Obi to out-last Randall.
3. The Knicks have been given trade interest for Obi and are waiting for the right moment.
4. The Knicks have been given NO trade interest for Obi whatsoever, and find that their best value is to have Obi talked about in the local papers. There's no such thing as bad publicity.
5. Obi isn't nearly as good as we think he is, he's already being maximized.

Any of these could square the circle. All I know is that the facts presented to date are decidedly pear-shaped.

There were more than a few times this year in which the reserves gave the starters a lead and they lost the game. Randle and Barrett are not good defenders either. One of the reasons that Thibs does not liek to play Obi and Randle together.

Every NBA team can say the same, (that there were alot of games where their subs outperformed the other team's subs). The last 5 minutes, and often the last 2 minutes of an NBA game is usually what matters.

Sources tell me the Indiana Pacers have traded for Obi Toppin.

I’m putting this out there but I have no idea how credible the source is.

I noted how the article said something to the effect of, “It’s hard to label him a ‘bust’ but his career has been a disappointment so far’.” Well, DUH! The Knicks ALREADY HAD Randle when they drafted Obi (who plays the same position as Randle). Then, after Obi’s 1st season, they signed Randle to that ginormous contract extension, which still has 2 years to run. Add-in “The Thibs Effect”, and you get the recipe for “disappointment”.

The Knicks drafting Obi in the Spring of 2020 made about as much sense as the Reds signing Mike Moustakas, a starter-grade 3rd Baseman, in the Winter of 2019-20, when they already had Eugenio Suarez, a then-All-Star-grade 3rd Baseman. I swear, some of these GMs must come from the Rotisserie League.

The first graph of that NY Post article is wrong. Obi DID get a major opportunity to show what he can do—in the games that Randall was injured he averaged 19 points and 6 boards to go with 2.5 assists.

Getting #1 away from Thibs is the best thing that could happen to him.

ESPN gives the Pacers an A for obtaining Obi and the Knicks a C for moving him.

I'm sure that Obi would have preferred to have succeeded in NYC, his hometown. Thibs was his kryptonite. I think that Stephen A. Smith's analysis was spot one. Now Obi gets a new start and only a couple hours away from Dayton. Obi going to Indy is a good move for him. Roger Brown went from Dayton to Indy, let's hope that Obi can have anywhere near the career that RB had in Indy.

In reviewing the Pacers’ stats from this past season, the 4 might have been their weakest position. I think, if Obi is given a fair shake, he can not only start for them, but greatly raise the performance level of perhaps their weakest position.

“ Toppin would give the Pacers another player who can man both forward spots, bringing much needed depth, especially to the power forward position. The Pacers addressed that spot in the draft by taking Houston's Jarace Walker No. 8 overall, but Toppin's addition allows Walker to ease into the NBA.”

I'm happy for Obi. NYC was a good fit as far as fan acceptance goes, but a terrible place for him as far as team fit.

You can never discount someone's home city, as they say a bad mother is bad, but she is my mother. However, Obi is going to a great city, Indy, and a great basketball state. He will love Indy, but foremost is he must be successful as a player.

I said from the time that Obi was drafted that his game was reminiscent of Robert Horry (who won 7 championship rings while with the Rockets, Lakers, and Spurs) and/or James Worthy (“Showtime”). Obviously, those skills didn’t fit into Thibs’ system. The Pacers, however, seem to play a much more up-tempo style, and I think Obi will finally see the minutes and success that we all envisioned for him.

Good luck, Obi!

Interesting read, though I think it forgives Thibs for his intransigence as a coach — and I don’t mean just in the way he handled Obi. The guy is awful at making in-game adjustments. I’ve never seen a pro team surrender so many double-digit leads in the blink of an eye, all while trotting the same five players out there with seemingly no change in strategy. He rode those guys until their legs were mush while capable fresh players were marooned on the bench. There’s no question he — and the Knicks in general — wanted Obi to adapt to a system that didn’t fit his talents. Obi isn’t blameless. Some players adapt to what’s expected of them; he didn’t. Randle was the star, despite offensive stats that — apart from PPG — were comparable or even worse than Obi’s numbers (free throws, overall FG percentage, 3-point percentage). Still, Obi’s defense was porous, and with Randle as THE star, he was doomed to second-class status given Thib’s reluctance to play the two simultaneously. Indy is Obi’s chance to make Thibs look like the idiot he is, in my opinion. If he doesn’t have a breakout fourth season, then the Knicks will indeed look like they wasted a lottery pick.

What's worse, is that there were multiple games where the send team got the team back into the game, only to be subbed out and the starters squander it away.

And that is why many on this board have little-to-no regard for Thibs as a coach. He’s married to the idea of doing it “his way”, even when his way doesn’t work.

What was he supposed to adapt to that he didn't - standing in the corner?

The only thing people ever really complained about was Obi's defense. And his defense, while not outstanding, was better than people give him credit for. In addition, those same people overlook the defensive liabilities of other Knicks players like Randle. On offense, sure, Obi isn't going to back his defender down and create a shot. At least, not likely with any consistency. Randle's pretty good at that. Now, unfortunately, if Randle is a little off, doesn't matter that he can get a shot off if he can't put it in the bucket, especially when it's crunch time. I'd rather have the ball in Brunson's hands than Randle's. But, Obi probably should have shown a little more in terms of mid-range jumper. He can shoot it, but seemed reluctant at times to drive and pull up, instead taking a 3 or on occasion, attempting to get to the rim where there may be little chance of success depending on who's guarding him and if the opposing team also has a C. Mitchell Robinson didn't stray far from the basket except to set picks, so if Obi did drive, he would likely have to deal with his defender AND Robinson's.

Obi definitely needs to continue adding to his repertoire, or get back to doing some things he did at Dayton. But it was just always very difficult to get into a flow knowing you were only likely to be on the floor for 6-7 minutes per half, and generally paired up with Barrett and Quickley, who rarely saw shots they didn't like.

I'm hopeful that at Indiana, Obi has more freedom to run pnr, shoot 3's, and drive to the hoop. Whether he's successful will depend on him and his off-season work, as well as how quickly he builds chemistry with his new teammates.

Positive comments about Indiana Pacers is USA Today:

Potential All Start backcourt with Haliburton and Mathurin. Acquired Bruce Brown and Obi Toppin to go along with Myles Turner and Buddy Hield.

"The Pacers have something cooking." New beginning for Obi

Obi’s trade is suppose to be finalized tomorrow, July 6th. There appears to be other teams involved as packages are being proposed with additional players, but I doubt it will affect Obi moving to Indianapolis. Here is some of the best of Obi in a Knicks uniform:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0rniliB_7k

But in my opinion, the sports photograph of Obi executing a between the legs dunk in Madison Square garden that’s in the first post of this thread will always be iconic for me and represent Obi’s time with the Knicks. It’s a great photograph. I would think it might win some photo-journalist award, it’s that good. When I re-visited it before this post, I noticed it came against the Indiana Pacers. How poetic. The Pacers should use it as a backdrop if they have an introductory press conference with Obi. I expect we will hear from Obi soon after it’s finalized.

So I read herein that I’m to name the new thread for Obi’s 4th year as a pro. I did a little research into the Indiana “Pacers” background. The nickname was chosen to represent both the “Pace” car for the Indy 500 and apparently Indiana at the time had a lot of horse racing and a pacer is a trained type of gait in the horse racing industry.

Obi’s game certainly plays out-front like a thoroughbred pacer when he gets out and beats everyone down the floor. I also read an article from an Indy media source that had Obi as the starting forward with 3 guards and a center.

Who took #1 from him? I just looked at last year's roster and no #1 on Pacers 22-23 roster.

Obi-1 is just too natural to go away.

Heard it was Walker - but if Obi is smart he will throw a few green backs Walkers way and get #1 - more Jersey's will sell to the Star Wars fans if it is #1

Team site confirms Walker (pronounced Jerris) ... maybe for the best. If I was a coach, I'd keep #1 out of circulation. Takes a little more attitude and swagger to wear it, and opponents may view it as a target.

https://www.nba.com/pacers/roster

FLYER TRIVIA ... in our long history, the first to wear #1 was ... Monty Scott !?!? Monty Scott (2003-07), Mickey Perry (2007-08), London Warren (2008-10), Kevin Dillard (2011-13), Darrell Davis (2014-18)

Walker wore #25 at Houston and bears an unsettling resemblance to Obi roadblock Julius Randle. If it happens again, being a journeyman role player isn't so bad.

There has been a number change. Obi will wear #1 for the Pacers. One tweet said Walker chose it on draft night because it looked good, but it had no particular meaning for him so he switched to #5.

It is more than a steak dinner for switching numbers. More like $50k to $100k for the number change.

Took a client to Ruth’s Chris in downtown Indy once. Always a good choice. Dallas, Boca, Ann Arbor, Atlanta, Scottsdale, Vegas. Use to go there a lot with clients.

Used to love Ruths but our last time at one (orlando) it was average at best. Then I read that Darden Restaurants bought them out a couple months ago and fear they go downhill even more. We typically seek out the independently owned places that have been around for years and have better experiences

Good to know about the buyout. Sadly that’s the way of the world. I haven’t been for several years.

Go Pacers! Sounds like it's going to be a run and gun offense, which is a great fit for Obi. I'm happy to not have to follow the dumpster fire that is the Knicks anymore.

Never had a disappointing meal at Ruths. Hopefully it was a fluke! I prefer them over Pine Club but Pine ain't a bad bridesmaid.

We hope it was a fluke at Ruth’s as well. However. Elmo’s in Indy we have always ranked above Ruth’s and plan to visit when we go watch pacers . Chicago chop house used to rank right up there as well but been a decade since we have been there
