This is a very winnable match if UD plays well. UD is hitting .206 for the season while SLU is hitting .227. But, UD is only allowing opponents to hit .170 while SLU opponents are hitting .218
SLU lost to GW at home last weekend while UD beat GW in straight sets, after losing set 1 badly. I think that UD has a lot more momentum than St Louis

I agree with all this. And here are two more stats I like. I looked at the last 5 matches -- not counting the LaSalle match, because we won't be playing any more LaSalles this year. And these two stats jumped out at me:
1. Our Assists/Set for the year are 10.86. In the last five matches it's 11.86 -- that means we are terminating one more ball per set which is a big number. This is the stat in volleyball that is like the saying "it's a game of inches." To be honest, 10.86 assists/set is not impressive. But anything close to 12/set is very, very good.
2. Out Points/Set for the year average 16.26. Last five matches it's 18.25/set. That's huge. It's a jump by 2 points/set. But it also means we are only needing 7 points from the opponent's errors to win a set. That's a good number. We are "taking control of the match from our side of the net" and dictating the outcome of matches based on what we are doing much better than earlier in the year. Points are the sum of your kills, aces, blocks. Aces make up less than 9% of our points. Blocks make up 19% of our points. 72% is kills.
You look at these two stats in detail and if you've watched any of these last matches, you know for certain that Jill and Alaina are terminating balls at a higher percentage than they were earlier in the year. And…ESPECIALLY out-of-system balls which I call junk sets. They are finding a way to score off of junk sets and just as important, but it doesn't show up in these numbers, I think they are managing the junk sets a lot better and not hitting errors on these and not giving the opponents the equivalent of a free ball off the junk sets as much as they were earlier in the year.
Both these hitters have improved so much this year. And after the season is over and Matt has to hand out the team Most Improved award, I don't know how it's not a co-Most Improved this year. When you play left OH at a big-time volleyball school you have got to be able to score off out-of-system sets. Every DI school has hitters that can get up and pound the ball off perfect sets. Just watch warm ups -- all the hitter look All-American in warm ups. But it's critical for elite teams to have left OHs that can terminate the junk sets. We didn't have that at the beginning of the year. Jill and Alaina have both come a long way in this area this year and it will serve us well the rest of the way.
GO FLYERS!!!!

The team looked like they had been reborn in the GW game. Everything was at a higher level than what we saw earlier. I feel good about the conference championship. We will impress.

Anyone notice the starting lineup for UD on Gametracker; Beach, Gresham, Turner, Loiars, Jendryk, Agu and libero....Megan Campbell!!!!!!
No video for any games; and no Sunday TV.

All UD players have an * after their name except Krafka. Is she injured?

There is video. I logged on to the Audio link on the df.com schedule and got the A-10 online page and have our announcer who just interviewed Matt. Then I opened another browser and clicked on the same "Audio" link from the df.com schedule page. It of course pulled up the same A-10 page -- then go to the right side and just under our audio rectangle -- there is a red HD video rectangle for this match. I clicked it thinking I might have to pay -- but no -- it's free.
So I have that video feed -- muted the audio on it and will listen to our announcer while watching the A-10 video.
Good luck & let me know if you are having problems finding it.
Matt interview -- said Megan Campbell was ramped up after the GW win and the bracket we got. Called it the "revenge" bracket -- SLU -- DUQ -- and probably VCU -- all teams we didn't beat this year and want another shot at.
They know they are playing their best ball right now and will get after it. FYI -- Megan Campbell isn't a real vocal person -- so you add that into the mix and I'd say they are coming with their guns loaded.

Flyers win 25-15. VERY nice start. What was new? Z running the slide. She did it 2-3 times scoring down the line on the slide. Loiars playing well.

UD wins 3rd 25-15. That last point - Alaina's kill -- reminded me of Kray's kill from the back row in the championship at Dayton in 2010. Libero running out of the back of the court trying to get a hand on the ball. ahhh the memories!
Bring it home ladies!!!!

Great comeback. Female announcer stated they were setting Loiars too tight. Not exactly sure what that means except too low and close to the net.
Get bragging rights back in St. Louis with my friends

Stat of the match -- DIGS. Krafta had 25 digs. Turner and Brown had 9 each. That might be career highs for all of them in a 4 set match -- or darn close.
"Funny" stat of the match -- Blocking. Our block was late a lot of the time this match and we still put up 11 blocks -- 3 solos -- and thus the closer was probably late. But we are so good at blocking we have an off night and still average 2.75/set. Love our block!!!!
Matt said our serving was really good -- exactly to the game plan. And our block helped shut down Dillon out of the back row. Said we shut her down early and took a big part of of SLUs offense away. Also might have contributed to our middles a little slow to close the blocks. If they were staying put for an extra second to either make the setter go outside vs to the back row -- then that would explain some holes in the block. Matt said these two things -- set the tone early.
Also said we came out a little sloppy in set 2 and beginning of set 4. But you have to like the way we can storming back in set 4.
On to the semis against Duquesne. Go Flyers!!!!

setting someone tight to the net means close to the net. Sometimes you do that on purpose if the hitter has a size advantage over the blocker, that way the hitter can hit it over the blocker. Jill made one great play to get the point on one set late in the last set.
Everyone played well tonight. It is hard to analyze from a computer screen but I thought Janna had some great passes off tough balls, diving but keeping her platform beautiful. That is what I would expect from her, she was well trained. But in general I thought the defense was really good and you cannot complain about the offense. Jenna made some very good sets even when the passing wasn't great all the time.
Duquesne has been playing well and presents a major challenge. They could definitely have an energy advantage. I thought Alaina struggled last year in back to back night nights. But, this is the semis with a tournament berth on the line and they have plenty of time to get a good night's sleep. It is better that they played early
I pick the Flyers but I am certainly biased

OK for someone volleyball illiterate like myself, explain to me why Turner gets twice was many swings as Campbell when shes terminating at 1/3 the rate as Campbell.
Im sure theres a completely legitimate tactical reason for this, but Im not astute enough to see past the numbers.

Several reasons, First, the pass has to be good to set the middles and right side of the net. (i.e. right OH or MB slide). You can't make that set if you are running down balls off bad or so-so passes. 2nd, Alaina plays all 6 rotations -- so she hits out of the back row some for 3 rotations. Megan plays 3.5 rotations (.5 = her serve rotation). She does not attack out of the back row. 3rd -- all the "junk sets" go to the left OH -- Alaina and Jill's position because it's the easiest set. Sometimes you set the right side OH some junk sets, for example when the first pass goes out-of-bounds on that side. But 90%+ of the out-of-system sets go to the left side OH.
Add it all up and your left OHs get the most sets and the left OH that plays all 6 rotations usually gets the most swings every match. Some exceptions, but for the year, they always take the most swings.

I agree 100% with what Beckystxa said. Just to add one thing. The ideal pass (to set the middle or the slide) is to the setter and within five feet of the net. You can set other balls but the odds go down. The further off the net the setter is the more difficult it is to set the ball to the right side, it is much tougher hitting the ball as it comes over your left shoulder and the blockers have more time to get into position. I haven't seen anyone who hits the slide better than megan but it is a quick play, good pass, a couple of steps and BAM!
That is why the first pass is so important. With great passing you have three options and with a mediocre pass your primary option is to the left outside hitter
I thought the commentator last night did a good job of emphasising that.

Agree with UDBrian -- and I'll add a little more --- so when you see your MBs getting a lot of swings in a match --- you know your passing nails that night and your back row is playing great.

What is special about the left side outside hitter that makes serving a junk set to that side much easier. Is that because the setter usually sets facing left and can see the attacker?
Whats preventing setting equal numbers of balls to the right. Im missing the details. For instance, it doesnt matter if you put your left foot or right foot forward first when you start walking down the street. Left and right are equals. So Im not absorbing the nuance here in vball context. Forgive my ignorance!
