Of Dunks, Hunks, Bunk and Junk

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- Nothing like some highlight reel dunks to get everybody geeked for the upcoming season and to get this alliterative collection off and running:

-- Slam Magazine has come up with their Top 50 Greatest Dunks in NCAA history. No, CW’s facial vs. Marquette isn’t included but it did make the “Honorable Mention” coming attractions dunks before the actual countdown begins (at about :42). However, London Warren did at #37! (at roughly 4:30):

A tip of the “FTS” cap to FlyerHoops.net MB poster CP5 for the find.

-- Some interesting perspectives on BG’s recent recruiting efforts up here in Michigan, courtesy of the MichiganPreps.com MB:

-- UD is still waiting for a decision by the NCAA on site selection for the “First Four”:

http://collegebasketball.rivals.com/...sp?CID=1119633

-- Here’s a profile from ChicagoHoops.com on a name to remember for the Class of 2012: Brandon Spearman’s Simeon HS teammate Steve Taylor, a 6’7” PF:

http://www.chicagohoops.com/articles1/stevetaylor.html

Taylor is currently ranked the #1 player in his class in the state of Illinois, again according to ChicagoHoops.com:

http://www.chicagohoops.com/articles1/2012rankings.html

-- Another Chicago kid for 2012, Aaric Armstead of Hales Franciscan HS, who already has an offer from UD. Three guesses where this story came from:

-- Rivals released an updated Top 150 for the Class of 2012:

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketb...ings/rank-2509

Flyer targets include #74 Sherron Dorsey-Walker of Detroit Pershing (MI) HS; #92 is the recently reclassified Mitch McGary of Brewster Academy (NH); the aforementioned Steve Taylor is ranked at #102 and Deonte “Teddy” Hawkins of Dayton Dunbar checks in at #141. Noticeably absent from the proceedings is Javontae Hawkins of Flint Powers (MI) HS. That will change in due time.

-- So, if you are keeping score at home, here are some of the names that are in-play for the 4 spots available to the Class of 2012 with the Flyers:

Steve Taylor of Chicago Simeon
Aaric Armstead of Chicago Hales Franciscan
Sherron Dorsey-Walker of Detroit Pershing
Khaliq Spicer of Dearborn, MI
Teddy Hawkins of Dayton Dunbar
Geron Johnson of Chipola (FL) JC by way of Dayton Dunbar
Javontae Hawkins of Flint, MI
Tamron Manning of Georgetown, KY
Charles Foster of Louisville, KY
Mitch McGary of Brewster Academy by way of Chesterton, IN

-- I like the way Matt Snyder of ESPN.com thinks. When the Crossroads Classic featuring four Indiana hoops powers was announced, he didn’t think the concept should be limited to the Hoosier state. His first choice? An All-Ohio Classic with OSU, X, UC and UD in it:

-- Coupla pieces on the Head Coaches at two of our A-10 brethren from Jeff Goodman at FoxSports.com:

First up, Phil Martelli at St. Joe blames nobody but himself for the Hawks’ recent mediocre performance:

And Temple is in good hands with Fran Dunphy at the helm:

-- Let’s debunk some myths about in-game strategy, shall we? Here are a couple of statistical analyses conducted by the Harvard Sports Analysis Collective on coaching decisions that are always up for debate.

First off, it turns out that there is no discernible advantage to fouling when your team is up by three points late in the game:

Secondly, calling a TO before your team gets the last possession actually works in favor of the guys on defense:

-- Get ready for Hoops Talk Live, the first ever all-basketball online talk radio station, coming to a computer near you two days after the Red and Blue game:

-- HighSchoolHoop.com advises us “not to believe the hype” about World Wide Wes and his slimy influence on HS recruits. Riiigghhht.

http://www.highschoolhoop.com/high-s...ieve-the-hype/

-- This year’s list of college hoops transfers has grown to 350+ and not one of them left UD (although Kevin Dillard did join the Flyers):

http://community.foxsports.com/goodm...ws_to_350-plus

-- ESPN has released the schedule for their College Basketball Gameday show and the closest it will be to Dayton, OH is Lafayette, IN:

http://www.espnmediazone3.com/us/201...llege-gameday/

-- The man who basically invented summer basketball (and all of the questionable crap that it encompasses) is trying to get back in the game. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome back the Sultan of Slime, Sonny Vaccaro:

-- An interesting update and interview with Arthur Agee, one of the two HS players (along with William Gates) featured in the documentary Hoop Dreams:

Thanks for the links, Swampy. That top-50 dunks video was fantastic. What a great debate that would be trying to put those together. I'd put Terrance Johnson of Pepperdine's dunk up there somewhere, as well as Richard Jefferson against UD in the Maui tournament. I was watching that UC game where Melvin Levitt's putback took place (#3) and it was even better than it looked in that mix.

Also nice to see UD is in on the top 2 prospects out of Illinois for 2012. Suck it, Weber.

Oh, as I can save all the Blackburn Review posters the time: you suck, you should retire, and you are a hypocrite.

Who would have ever thought London would have a dunk that would get more recognition that Chris' best effort?!!

I still love the opening tip play we ran for Charles on senior day for him. Wright tips to Huelsman who shovels the ball to London who lobs it to Charles on the back side for an alley-oop four seconds into the game.
