St Louis Game
Would be awesome to win today and close out a perfect season. It will be hard for our ladies to come out with super intensity in a somewhat meaningless game on the road, when they have clinched. Sometimes it is better to get a loss out of the way and be more motivated for the A10. If they lose today, and win the tourney, I am fine. More than fine.

Somewhat meaningless? No freakin way!!! We still are not a lock for the dance. We need every "W" we can get.

It's Layfield's birthday today so 16-0 would be a nice present for the team to give her!!

Not a physical game so foul trouble like Sunday shouldn't be an issue. Why do we have to see a Billiken basket replay and miss live action?

As if the camera work isn't dizzying enough, they are showing a replay of every StL basket. Crazy.
Little defense by either team. Hope Green lays into them. Too many close in shots.

Two odd scores in the A-10 today Duquesne only beating Bonnies by one in the fourth (they won third qt 26-8) and GW has 25 points into the fourth quarter losing to Richmond by 11.

Only thing we have done wrong, besides some poor defense, is 4 turnovers. This team can flat out shoot the rock.

No fouls on StL and 5 on us. Of course when you don't play defense, you do not foul.

STL can hit from the outside - guard more tightly - if you give a little inside to Gits so be it.

41 all at half and at the end of both quarters UD could've held for one - didn't but SLU missed buzzer shots. It does get frustrating they don't hold for one in these circumstances.

I am in the other camp. Slow it down and run your offense till you get a great shot. Letting Wilmoth shoot lately is not a great shot. Too many teams hold till 9 seconds, then get guarded super close, and settle for desperation.
Anyway, we played poor D in the first quarter, followed by even worse D in the second. StL shot 53% and 71% on threes that quarter. Hopefully, the Flyers can flip the switch at some point, but as we have seen a couple games that is not always easy.

With that kind of first half on offense, we should be up 10-12pts. But our defense let us down. No high hands, late to close out on shooters or just daring them to shoot and miss. When we get in foul trouble, we get in game trouble.
Layfield is the team MVP, but Burdette is the team's most important player (MIP).
This game will be won or lost on the defensive end in second half. Unless we tighten up on D, we're asking for it. There's enough offense out there to get the job done.

The other difference at half is that they have 5 free throws to our zero.
Four players have scored all 41 of our points.

You can see the defensive intensity for UD has increased first three minutes of the half though the offense is now cold.

So much for our defensive run. Harris was 15 feet off her player, who drilled the three, and Jenna gets beat easily on the dribble the next time down.

Bad half in every respect - get it out of their system going into the NCAA tourney - will this loss hurt getting to the NCAA Tourney if they don't win the A-10 tourney is an interesting thought. I'd say have to at least GET to the championship game.

That last play by Lauren sums up our offense. She sprints down to nowhere, picks up her dribble, travels and throws it away.

Well that was the definition of a trap game fulfilled. Giving up 85 points to a .500 team and shooting 22% in the second half sums it up ... no effort and a terrible game. Lauren and Jayla shot 10 for 31. Zero baskets off of the bench. Should I go on?
Like I said, I would rather lose this one and get more motivated and win the tourney. Forget this one and win the next three.

Same question we at the game asked one another so its your perspective.
Not good officiating, how can you not T up SLU coach when she comes out on the floor during live play. Ref looked right at her and coach went back in her box saying sorry.
Shauna was on the refs all night. Slu didn't have foul in the first half. Scaife with her second bad game in a row.

SLU focused on Jenna and Lauren shutting them down. Shauna drew up play after play for Scaife, Harris and Layfield but none could the ball in the basket with 3 attemps. If the could score it would open up for Jenna and lauren. Late in gam d Lauren forced it in the paint but she no Austria or Burdette and runs into traffic often ending up on floor.
Once SLU realised refs weren't calling fouls the played tighter and bumping rest of the game.
This was SLU superbowl game, senior night and had more to p lg ay for. Maybe we won't be a 8 or 9 seed now.
Sat with Shauna and Scaife families. Really nice people.
Now just run the tournament and take the hatdware. Sad but SLU out drew us on senior day 4400 fans in seats.

Let me address what I thought was an idiotic question to Shauna. Have you ever heard a,coach say a loss was a good thing. It's one thing to speculate in the stands but to suggest that to an upset coach is simply idiotic.

I'm assuming Alex asked the question since he was the radio guy that interviews Shauna after games. Didn't hear her answer.

I was fortunate enough to attend the game.
The energy level from Dayton was not what I expected. It was not indicative of a team with a 16-0 conference record within their grasp.
SLU’s atmosphere was tremendous. They gave away thousands of free tickets to younger schools teams and programs and they came out in droves in the middle of a rain storm.
It was Senior Day and SLU had several seniors (6 total I think) really elevate their game and energy today.
SLU was the preseason favorite to win the A10, so the talent and pedigree is there. Tip of the cap to them, they played better and deserved to win.

UD is an execution team. Talent-wise, a half dozen teams in the league can match up with us. But we excel at playing team ball and exploiting our strengths while hiding weaknesses. Our strengths are effort, ball movement, taking good shots, rebounding, defending, and staying out of foul trouble.
We dont need to score 90 to win, and we dont need to score 60 to win. We can win at any pace as long as we stay in our lane.
That didnt happen today. Defense was poor from start to finish -- even with the 7pt lead it was poor, we were simply outscoring Sloo. Sloo got any open shot they wanted. Closeouts were late, and nobody had high hands in shooters' faces. We also got into foul trouble again as Jenna and Harris had to sit. We cannot win if we have to go more than 6-7 deep -- its just not there. Our starters and maybe Wilmoth are the only consistencies.
We couldnt get to the foul line much, and took some bad shots on offense too. Scaife has to learn that when she's cold, she needs to get the ball to someone that isn't. We have two players who can shoot the leather off the basketball -- if you're not hitting, find Jenna or LC24. If they aren't hitting, they will find you.
Better team won today. We knew Sloo was fully capable. And we knew if we dont do what we do well, we can be pretty ordinary. We are probably still the A10 tourney favorite, but we can also get bumped on the quarters. Our margin is very thin in terms of personnel and execution is our calling card. There are no WNBA draft picks this time like Hoover or Malott who can turn water into wine.
I dont liike the loss either, but it assures us we're not invincible after 16Ws in a row. That should get the team's attention knowing they are everybodys Super Bowl.

The Flyers were picked as the preseason favorites, receiving 182 points and eight first-place votes.
Saint Louis was tabbed to finish second and received three first-place votes.

She was upset said the performance was unacceptable not the time to respond asking if the defeat could be a good thing.

Thanks for the clarification. It’s possible I was confusing that with last year, or was just a little off in my recollection.
Probably doesn’t change the point though - SLU was a team that was picked to finish high in the conference and have a much better season than what’s transpired.

Our lack of depth will be tested severely with 3 games in 3 days. We have four excellent players and then it drops to two average players and and several who struggle to play at this level. It is impossible for any A10 team to shut down our offense with those four, even yesterday they scored enough to win. If the defense shows up, we are unstoppable. Hate to be the team playing us on Friday, because Green will have them loaded for bear. This bad loss will be a great motivator, and despite our depth, we will win it all next week.

Dissapointed with the outcome but not surprised. SLU best game of the year. Senior day with 6 graduating, fighting to host first round game Tuesday and of course seeking to avenge an embarrassing loss to rival Dayton.
SLU smelt blood at halftime hanging with the flyers and came out higher than a kite. UD defense was not up to par but SLU had seldom used players hitting buckets from everywhere. Hard to defend when a team is on fire.
Don't think UD energy was all that bad but when two teams are running at 80 mph then suddenly one jumps to 120 it makes the other team look slow. We just couldn't slow them down nor buy a bucket on our end. Triple offensive rebounds on several occasions and we couldn't finish.
Tough lesson learned but better here than in the tournament.

Always hate to play a team on their Senior Day. Senior magic can make any team terrific for a day.
