UDMSOC: Flyers Blitz Bonnies 6-1

Three 1st half goals gave the Flyers all the cushion they needed to break St. Bonaventure's back and win going away -- adding three more goals after intermission to win 6-1 on Saturday evening at Baujan Field. Freshman Jonas Fjeldberg jump-started the Dayton offense with three assists while Alvaro Navarro picked up a brace as UD improves to 6-6-2 (3-1-0). The Bonnies fall to 4-8-2 (0-4-0).

The opening minutes of the 1st half were a great sign for Flyer fans as UD jumped out of the gate with an excellent work rate and more physicality in the central third of the field. Picking off sloppy passes and winning loose-ball challenges, the Flyers were quick to counter-strike on offense and make the Bonnies sweat it out inside their goal box. A bevy of crosses in the box forced SBU to come up big on clearances with their head and feet, but the onslaught of dangerous Flyer chances never subsided.

The persistence paid off in the 12th minute as Jonas Fjeldberg pieced together a bull-rush to the right baseline along with some nifty footwork to chip a perfectly-weighted ball to the far post that teammate Alvaro Navarro one-timed in the net for the 1-0 Dayton advantage.

The Flyers didn't take their foot off the gas after the restart, picking off more errant passes for additional chips and volleys inside the SBU goal box that required desperate clearances or goalkeeping saves. Sophomore Rok Taneski called his own number in the 26th minute with a rocketed shot that landed top-shelf from 18yds out that made the score 2-0. From there, the Bonnies continued to fall apart while the Flyers continued to get stronger.

Just three minutes later, Fjeldberg chipped another baseline ball to the far post -- this time for 6-7 Thor Helgason. Helgason won the high-ball header and put it past the Bonnie goalkeeper to give the Flyers a commanding 3-0 lead.

Sandwiched between all the Flyer scoring were just a handful of St. Bonaventure scoring chances, but their best work necessitated a couple big-time saves from Dayton GK Justin Saliba -- filling in for a gimped-up Federico Barrios. Two tip-saves turned away point-blank SBU shots to keep the Bonnies off the scoreboard.

The Flyers dominated the remaining 20 minutes of the 1st half and enjoyed the 3-0 lead at intermission. Stats favored UD in shots 16-8, while corner kicks were even at three a piece.

Unless the two teams switched jerseys, the 2nd half was largely an exercise in managing the result of the first 45 minutes. Dayton cooled their jets just a bit over the first 15 minutes, but heated up in a three minute span that resulted in two more goals to make the score 5-0. James Haupt ripped a shot from just outside the box in the 62nd minute and Navarro notched his brace with a shot to the lower right post that beat the outstretched hands of the SBU goalkeeper.

With 23 minutes remaining and a 5-0 lead, there was nothing left to prove. The Bonnies finally found the scoreboard in the 76th minute after UD cleared the ball out of the box but the resulting redirect found a Bonnie player unmarked around the PK spot. The Flyers were pushing out as the redirect was played, leaving just a poke past GK Justin Saliba to put SBU on the scoreboard.

Less then a minute later however UD pushed the lead back to five goals when Trey Marchino cleaned up a Ben Leba shot that forced the SBU goalkeeper into a diving save that squirted away. Up 6-1 with 10 minutes remaining, UD brought on the subs to spread the playing time around. A few more close calls could have made the score even more lopsided.

Overall, UD out-shot SBU 26-17, while the Bonnies edged UD in corner kicks 7-6. The Flyers had 15 shots on goal to just 4 for SBU. It was a thorough pasting in all phases as UD dominated the match from start to finish. Ball-winning, work rate, passing, and efficiency around the goal box were collectively among the best that Flyer fans have seen all season. The Bonnies did not play well and had goalkeeping issues throughout, but the Flyers also had something to do with that. All of the goals scored were quality finishes, benefiting from excellent buildup from defense to offense.

The youth movement consisting of Fjeldberg, Taneski, and Helgason book-ended the strong play of Navarro to turn this match into a laugher.

UD travels to Saint Louis on Wednesday for an 8pm kickoff at Hermann Stadium.
