Davidson Game Thread
Massive Game on Tuesday Night... You know the Wildcats will p'ed off at how they played against Richmond yesterday evening. We must bring our A game to win at the Belk Arena in North Carolina.
Game is at 7:30 and will be shown on the CBS Sports Network.
Starting Lineup:
G 3 Brian Sullivan 5'11" 175 JR Upper Arlington, OH
G 12 Jack Gibbs 6'0" 195 SO Westerville, OH
G 4 Tyler Kalinoski 6'4" 180 SR Overland Park, KS
F 23 Peyton Aldridge 6'7" 205 FR Leavittsburg, OH
F 1 Nathan Ekwu 6'7" 235 FR Enugu, Nigeria
They have 2 big time scorers on their team... Gibbs & Kalinoski both avg about 16 PPG... Their team averages about 82 a night. Contrasting styles our defense vs. their offense.
Let's protect our likely Top 25 ranking! Go UD!

Interesting that Davidson has more starters from the State of Ohio than UD does.

When discussing Davidson on his show this morning, Archie compared their style of play to that of Butler, only faster.

Interesting banter on Davidson bball forum site (davidsoncats.com) about their recent thrashing by Richmond and the upcoming UD game. Obviously they have read our site.
Trying to make it a "Blackout" and hoping they can fill their lower bowl area despite some lackluster attendance by season ticket holders.
Hopefully we can stay focused, hit our threes, avoid foul trouble and get out of their with a well earned "W".

They are good shooters, but SLU played zero defense in this clip.

They appear to be the smallest team we will play. Their size may negate some of our speed and defensive agility. They won't be posting up down low, but we have to stop the dribble drive. We should and must control the boards.

Have to believe if we can play good perimeter defense, Pollard and Pierre will eat them up inside. We will see, but I am much more optimistic about this game then I was two weeks ago.

Agreed...
I was not optimistic about this game couple weeks ago.
Now, I think this will be a very, very good game.
I think Davidson tends to have advantage on perimeter, but I also think Pollard/Pierre will have advantage on inside. I actually think the teams are very similar in terms of approach and philosophy. Both teams have coaching, experience, and talent.
While I am fearful of the 'outside influences', ie foul trouble, but I think the winner will be won with individual matchups. But anticipate it being on heck of a game.

Foul Trouble and Defense
will play a big role in the outcome. Dayton needs a well called game with few touch fouls. This is a big order on the road. Dayton's defense should be superior to Davidson's if they let them play. Davidson is a scoring machine on offense and at the foul line. It is very important for the Flyers to go to the line and make their shots. Davidson should be a 4-5 point favorite at tip. Key to Flyer success is no foul trouble for Scoochie, Kyle and KP. Go Flyers!

The money is flowing on the Flyers.

I have to share this...I went to the Davidson message board. One of the members said that St Louis team name of Billikens is as strange as it gets.
Apparently, he (she) never heard of the Santa Cruz Banana Slugs or the Long Beach Dirt bags.

Couldn't agree more. Let 'em play. We should be quicker and can be as deadly from the perimeter. This is a coaches and shooters game IMHO. Watching their youtube clips they look like us from the outside prior to last week's grinders. Multiple threats. I like our ability to drive.

Quick Analysis
I think this game will be similar to trying to gut out a win at Saint Joes. I think the Belk gym/arena holds about 5000-5500 people. There will be probably 300-500 Flyer fans between charters and Charlotte alum.
I really don't have a good feel for this one other than we better guard the perimeter and not foul. Both teams are undefeated at home. Both teams have only respectable losses. Both teams lack a true signature win (Although, You can argue that Ole Miss and Texas A&M are heading the right direction).
I know not all of you are fans of Ken Pomeroy, but I really do like his rankings better than the RPI for indicating playing level.
I did a little schedule comparison using Pomeroy rankings. Here is my conclusion:
Davidson has better losses, albeit more of them. Still a better average = 22 (2,8,17,62), but their wins have been less impressive -> average = 212.
(284,250,187,129,337,183,298,233,62,264,109)
Notice no top 100 wins besides Richmond (which redeemed itself this weekend).
Dayton has much a much better average for teams they have beat = 176 (330,77,120,301,279,124,79,230,92,35,240,119,265,9 8,264) including five top 100 wins.
What does this mean? I am not sure, but despite our ranking I think Pomeroy has it about right. We are one of the 30-35 best teams in the country and Davidson is one of the 45-50 best.
If this was at Dayton - I think we win by 10. Since this is on the road in the A10 I think we squeak out a 2 point win at the buzzer. These guys just know how to gut out wins.
After last week's shooting exhibition we are due for a break out game again from the perimeter. Archie has been talking about Davidson's coach and program on almost every Sunday Archie Miller show. He has a tremendous amount of respect for the coach and the program. I don't know if he has ties from his NC State days, but there is genuine respect.
He has stated they are one of the best offensive teams in the country on numerous occasions. He will have Dayton ready.
Given that Eggsvier (Go Depaul!) is no longer our conference rival I'd hope we could get something going with Davidson by starting with a win at their place. I think they are a fantastic addition to the conference.

What is Belk's reputation as far as shooters go? Of course it depends on the perimeter defense, but usually places have a rep one way or another. Curious if anyone knows...

History of Series
Davidson leads the all-time series 3-0. They last played on 2/24/73 with Davidson winning 84-67. In Lefty Driesell's final season as coach Davidson defeated the 19th ranked Dayton Flyers on 2/6/69 in Madison Square Garden. Here's hoping for a great Flyer performance and the first win for the program over Davidson College.

For National Press coverage, this game is about a 10. Davidson is an East coast darling, and easy for the public to root for. The Flyers have some of that mojo going as well. It's a chance to grab a road win against a very good A10 opponent. Then there's the top 25 coverage angle.
The score will be posted early and often on the ESPN ticker strip since we are in the top 25.
Publicity-wise this is BIG.
Go Flyers!!

really, its a slow sports night, NFC/AFC championship coverage has mostly wained, there is a mandatory stop on hiring coaches in the NFL, college football is in kind of a dead area, super bowl talk hasn't totally ramped up yet, not a ton of games in college basketball, I'd imagine your standard range of NBA/NHL games, but only a handful of national appeal. So yeah, the game should get a decent amount of coverage on sportscenter, CBS college basketball program, etc..

Sitting in Belk. Small arena but very upscale, as is the campus and town. Their kids must wonder when they hit the likes of Forham, etc

UD
will have to play defense with their offense by using more clock or they will be gassed at the 10 minute mark.

We are playing At Davidson's tempo. Scoochie needs to control our tempo more or they will score 90 points.

Sitting in a Buffalo Wild Wings in Virginia to watch the game because my hotel doesn't have CBS Sports. Looked away to order a meal and bam, Davidson is up by 10.

Maybe time for some zone to change things up. Nice defensive stand after Sibert's and one though. Stop them for 3 seconds and there is a chance to get momentum.

We need to pace the game and pound it inside. Slow things down. They are getting too many open looks in transition. If we slow this game down we will be OK. We are getting fouled every time we get the ball in the lane.

Home cookin' is heating up. Is that 2 or 3 on Pollard with 9 minutes to go in the first half?

That's right. CBS misidentified him as having two fouls after his first.

Is Pierre hurt or tired? He didn't even step out on the 3 point shooter. He stood and watched.

Well guys, we talked about the night when shots aren't falling and we're in foul trouble. This is it. Do we fold up or fight back?

Reduce that 10 point lead of Davidson and I have faith in our second half performance history.

I would advise AM to sit Pierre but we have no subs. He is out of control and dribbling way too much.

Lot's of turnovers. Lots of missed threes. On defense Davidson's guys keep getting open looks and nailing shots. This game isn't out of reach, but it's a big hole.

Well, they are putting on a shooting clinic. It's not bad defense. Even contested shots are going in for them. If they keep this up in the second half, there is not much that we can really do.
We turned it over nine times in the first half, and we only shot a few FTs. Both these stats have to significantly improve for us to have a chance.

Have to play much better defense and make some shots. Going to be a real challenge to come back to win this one. Davidson played inspired basketball in the first half, only Sibert looks like he came to play tonight .

We are usually speeding up the other team. Tonight we are being sped up, playing outside our natural rhythm.

Points off turnovers 13-0 in favor of Davidson. Almost exactly the difference in the game. We're pretty much even otherwise in terms of rebounding and shooting percentage.

(1) Bad Turnovers -- losing 9-2 turnover battle
(2) 3 Pointers -- 8-13 for Davidson, wow an extra 9-12 points; and UD 3-9.
(3) Refs, they are consistent, but not calling the type of game we thrive in. Calling weird illegal screens and touch fouls while shooting, but calling nothing when Sibert, Schooch, or Pierre get fouled going to the bucket.

Not so much a no show as he is getting doubled every time he touches the ball on the wing. We need to get their big out on the wing and post our guards up some. They are doubling down hard on Pierre and Pollard.

We can still win this game. We were down 16 to Gonzaga with 2 minutes to go in 1H and down 9 at the start of the 2H.
(1) No turnovers.
(2) better D on the 3
(3) starting hitting shots.

Yet he is dribbling too much and playing out of control. He needs to slow down and play within the flow of the offense.
