Dayton Pizza
Having not lived in Dayton for over 40 years I have lost my touch for the best pizza in town. I would like to put up a poll, but aside from Marions and Vic Cassano I am not sure who to include. Please give me you thoughts.
Hey, its a dead week and I am tired of the same old threads.

There is a thread on here, started by perhaps John R on this subject with a lot of answers. I'll see if I can find it.
I stand corrected, it was started by Fudd, though John R had a bunch of good input:
http://www.udpride.com/forums/showth...=monster+pizza
I'll stand by my list I posted/revised on this thread, though its been a long time since I've had some of them; not sure if some of them even exist anymore.

Remember Godfather's well, was my favorite growing up, had a store near Wilmington Pike and Smithville.
They are still around, have had a resurgence in the last 10-15? years...former GOP POTUS candidate Herman Cain? maybe turned them around...multiple locations in Dayton(Wilmington I-675 exit and Huber Heights)...and at least a couple locations at gas stations on the east side of Cincinnati.
GP also has a 3rd Dayton-area store...291 North Springboro Pike in Miamisburg.

Godfather's has been back in Dayton on Wilmington Pike for several years. It's a pizza you can't refuse!
Flying Pizza is a must for the list.

OT, but does anybody else remember Rocky Rococo pizza? I was in Milwaukee a few years ago, and they had a location right near the airport.
It is funny that some restaurant chains that you thought were long gone are still around in various parts of the country.

I've never had Joe's on Airway Rd. but since it has so many votes I am definitely going to try it! My four favorites in no particular order are: Flying Pizza, Marion's, Doubleday's and Adriatico's New York style pizza near the UC campus.

We used to play trivia at the field house. Not sure if they still do that (or if that place even exists) but they sold draft Natty pints for $3.50 and we'd order a huge pepperoni/banana pepper pizza that was phenomenal.
As a 18+ year Chicagoan I think my opinion is a solid data point at the very least. The Natty deal doesn't seem like such a deal to me now in hindsight.

Kramers.
Marions is junk. Put some pizza toppings on a cracker.
Classic Pizza in Huber Heights is great, but no one knows about it.

Being a city kid, who went to high school downtown, Flying Pizza is my go-to. Marion’s and Cassano’s fill the role of “comfort food”, but they’re not authentic “pizza”. For “eclectic”, Dewey’s and Old Scratch are good choices. Went to South Park after the Sunday game about a month ago, and I’d go back. Beyond that, I haven’t gotten around much. But Flying is and always will be my #1 in Day-Town.

Oregon Express (the OE special)
Doubledays (Monster Pizza)
Deweys
Marions (a little goes a long way)
Kramers (see Marions) - only one problem...if they don't feel like makin' it that particular night, you ain't gettin' it! The place isn't the same since Fred left and that's too bad. Used to see Bucky in there after a half dozen or so games a year, Larry occasionally. Now you're lucky to find a clean (well...clean for Kramers) table.

Pizza Factory on Wayne (South Park) is awesome. Dewey's is #1...and I need to find this place in C'ville called Kings Pizza. They may owe me royalties.

When the West Chester Marions location opened, many people wrote savage online reviews ripping every aspect of the place: pizza sucks, prices suck, still cash only at the time of opening I think(which has since changed), more than 1 line for food and drinks, have to ask for plates and utensils, no free refills on soda, etc. I was shocked, opinions vary I guess, I think the pizza is awesome.

All those complaints were about service, not the pizza. I'm not a big Marion's fan. Have to ask for light sausage or they overdo it. I would still take Cassano's every day plus Sunday over Marion's. But there's no good pizza in TX so I'm stuck.

Well when the service sucks to the point you can not enjoy a warm pizza, I refuse to go back.
The record was a 45 minute wait in the Pop/beer/Mikesells Green Onion Potato Chips line. My pizza was already done and getting cold. The double line system is terrible, always has been and always will be. I do not dine out to wait in multiple lines, cuts into the socializing with those you are with time. Way too many bad experiences at Marions, usually on a Saturday afternoon youth sports teams end of season party. They will never see me again.

I might agree with you if you get a good Cassano's. What I iove about marions, besides the pizza, is that you always know what you're going to get, at least from my experience. It's the same pizza every time. With Cassano's it's a crapshoot, you never know what you're going to get.

...and for those of you who prefer wine...none on Sunday's at Marions. BUT, Roger Glass is laughing all the way to the bank! Based on a recent interview, I think you can expect a downtown Dayton location in the near future.

True dat about Marion’s. I can go to the location in Englewood, or on North Dixie, or in Shroyer Park, or (keep going)...and my sausage and mushroom pizza will taste the same at each location. No, it’s not real, Italian-style Pizza. But it’s still good food. Sort of like Velveeta isn’t really Cheese, but it tastes pretty good when it’s melted over a plate of nachos with some spicy, diced tomatoes.

If you are in the Fort Worth area, try Joe's Pasta and Pizza. The Keller location has a NY feel to it, large slice and authentic tasting. Each location has a different taste, so not sure about the others....

Sorry people but when I hear discussions on the best pizza in Dayton (really Ohio), the discussion on who is going to be valedictorian at summer school comes to mind.

Anyone remember when McDonald's bought Donato's and tried to sell it in their stores? One huge problem they didn't consider, a full size pizza box could fit thru their drive thru windows. The owner bought it back from McDonald's for a fraction of what they gave him originally and built it back up.

The double line system is terrible, always has been and always will be. I do not dine out to wait in multiple lines, cuts into the socializing with those you are with time. Way too many bad experiences at Marions, usually on a Saturday afternoon youth sports teams end of season party. They will never see me again.

I like Marions pizza, BUT, as Clayton says: after season youth sports party at marions can make it zoo.
I have approached Marions about sponsoring a youth team or donations to a fund raiser. Forget it. They are PROUD to say they do not sponsor any teams.

There's a reason the Roger Glass and his dad, Marion, before him...are filthy $$$. Until he was physically unable, Marion and Roger personally emptied the vending machines (stuffed animals, cigarettes when they sold them) at the end of the day at all his restaurants. Marion trusted very few people and was not a pleasant man to work for.

I've been to Joe's. It's aight. I fully admit to being a little nostalgic about Cassanos. I grew up on it. I mean we had other options, besides Marions, like Noble Romans, Godfathers, etc, but we typically had Cassanos and it was my favorite. On the rare occasion I get one brought to Texas, it's a real treat for me.

Donato's quality I think went downhill after McDonald's bought them
Massey's Pizza in Columbus is run by some of the family that started Donatos and uses the original Donato's recipe

Per Wikipedia:
In 1999, Donatos was purchased by McDonald's in an attempt to enter the pizza industry. A majority interest in Donatos was repurchased by Jim Grote and daughter Jane Grote Abell in 2003 as McDonald's sought to refocus on its core business.[5] During this period Donatos also had operations in Munich, Germany.[6]
In 2017, Donatos founder Jim Grote led a $1 million seed round in BeeHex, the 3D-food printing company with NASA origins.
What the h*ll is 3D food printing??

I like my Pizza...and Marion's has never been at the top of my list. I have taken people from out of town there and they aren't fans either. I grew up in Dayton, so I have obviously been there about a million times. I will eat the crap out of it if one of the kids teams has a party there, but if we are deciding on a pizza night...it doesn't make the cut. It isn't the style...it just doesn't get it done...I go for pepp, sausage, onion...not in the top Dayton 5 and the only reason it gets the "best" is because it has been around forever and everyone knows the name.
Kramers...Classic...Deweys...Hoagies...Christys (get it a bit overcooked)...all good...
Hairless Hare Brewery in Vandalia has some of the best small business pizza in Dayton.
Chain Pizza...Jets or Larosas.
Places that are shut down....Vandalia Pizza, Domsitz, C's on Brandt Pk...those were really good as well.
I've always liked Kramers due to the fact the cheese is over the toppings and the dough is always good. Hoagies on North Dixie is outstanding as well. Been going there since I was a young kid.
The best pizza is homemade....GFS dough balls thawed and proofed for 2 hours...cooked on a screen over a pizza stone. Brushed with butter/garilc/parm to finish the crust. I will put that up against anything....and each 15 inch pie costs about 2 bucks to make!!!

Not sure how I forgot this one....but when we come back to Dayton...
Little York Tavern.
Although the original at the corner of Dixie & Little York was better.

Low Carb made at home pizza- no crust
So after reading this thread that past couple days I had to satisfy my craving, thus we made pizza at home last night. I am hard at work reshaping my studly physique and limiting the carbs, so we make pizza without crust. We just each take a baking dish and dump in what we want, spice it up a bit, and eat with a fork. Rao's brand of pizza sauce is low carb count, as are the meats, cheese and veggies we dump in.
Better than ALL of the national chains and just about as good as some of the mom and pop places in town. Don't knock it till you tried it!

If it is, just blame it on the water boil advisory.

Forgot about Little York Pizza and Hoagie’s Pizza. Haven’t been to Hoagie’s in years, but the last time I got pizza from there, it was piled with toppings. Good taste, good value, and a neighborhood joint. Little York is my wife’s favorite. Crispy, thin crust and a fairly generous helping of toppings (we usually get ham, mushrooms, and black olives). A couple of north side favorites.

A real good beavercreek place JUST went out of business: Rocky’s Pizza Ring. Tucked in behind Lofino’s.
Cassanos is my fav when they do it right. Sadly they are inconsistent.
T-bone, Dayton style pizza is a legit style of pizza. No one has to apologize for it. Nearly all pizza in the US has evolved away from authentic Italian from the old country.
Now I am gonna confess a guilty pleasure. I have never told anyone this: I love the pizza at Speedway. The sauce is good and they have the perfect amount. Also technically it’s a local pizza (headquarters in Enon)
They say there is no bad pizza but I had one once. I ordered a pizza in Japan in the mid eighties, it was American cheese and ketchup on a slice of white bread! I did finish it!

Little York is good if you can get by with the suspect service the majority of the time.
Little Ceasars...if you are going to get it...get it with extra cheese...makes all the difference. We get it in Kentucky quite a bit after a long day on the lake as you can feed a small army for less than 30 bucks.

UDEE79, your story reminds me of a party I attended on Alberta Street during Finals Week in either December of ‘83 or December of ‘84. The guys who lived there had a Chef Boy-Ar-Dee pizza crust, but that was “it” for traditional ingredients, so they made a “Clearance Sale” pizza:
-Spaghetti sauce? Tomato paste with spices? Nope. Store-brand tomato soup.
-Mozzarella cheese? Provolone? Nope. Store-brand American slices. And the “piece de resistance”...
-Pepperoni? Sausage? Ham? Nope. Bologna.
I had 1 small piece of that mess, then realized I hadn’t had nearly enough to drink to be able to stomach any more, so I told the guys, “I’m good.”
