Off-season workouts are underway for the Michigan men's basketball team, and Ibi Watson is already turning heads when it comes to metrics.
The 6-foot-5 sophomore wing apparently set a new team record in the vertical leap on Friday, jumping 44 1/2 inches to touch 12 feet, 1/2 inches, strength and conditioning coach Jon Sanderson tweeted out.
To help put this in perspective, the vertical jump record at the NBA Draft combine is 46 inches, set by Memphis' D.J. Stephens in 2013.

Watson is an elite athlete but from what I can tell is a TDB as a player in college. Being interesting to see if they'd take both him and Scott

That's interesting. I wonder how they got into that mode, but it has been in their DNA for decades. And they do pretty good with it. I know Ames, Iowa well and could never figure out what the draw was/is.

Fred Hoiberg got it started and Prohm kept it going. I think it's easier getting those guys versus filling out a roster with all high schoolers that are good enough for B12 play

The draw is playing in a great conference in front of 12-15k rabid fans. Plus, they put guys in the NBA. Unknowns become big dogs in Ames.

I have not posted or read much on here lately but what reason would any legitimate grad transfer have for coming to Dayton? There is nothing to give them hope UD would get them to the NCAA tournament if they were coming from a one bid league. The only grad transfers that I feel would consider UD are guys who want to pad their stats and try to impress scouts for European teams.

That, in and of itself, is plenty of reason why a legit. grad transfer would want to come to either UD or any other good program where they can get substantial mpg with a chance to showcase themselves....These kids are 22-23 years of age and they're thinking about their future just like the kid who is an engineer....NCAA appearance is great but some of these kids have played in the NCAA tourney already.....
Far more grad transfers looking to beef their stats than the normal JUCO kid or transfer that still has 2-3 years of eligibility who envision playing in the tourney..

We still need a short term PG backup. I doubt the staff wants Cohill to play much time at PG, even if he is a combo guard. But, if that's what it comes down to, then so be it. Anything can happen but I find it difficult they bring in a Freshman PG with who they are targeting for 2019, unless they feel none of the 2019s will actually commit.

It sounded like they wanted to go the JUCO route with Wendell Mitchell and Gatling but the JUCO market has kinda dried up now for the top guys.
Agree on a freshman PG, it sounds like that ship sailed. Doesn't sound like their pursing Neftali Alvarez anymore
I think a grad transfer PG who's willing to play off the bench would be the best move. Serve as a bridge till a 19 PG gets onto campus. Matos and Cohill are presumably the only two guards on the bench and if they want to play 3-4 guard line ups that's not much depth
I'm starting to think they just give Cohill a bunch of minutes at PG and the other guards off the bench

Is there a list of available grad transfer PGs who are still available? Frankly, all we need is someone competent to pick up some minutes, not someone who's going to come in and tear it up. If we got 10mpg from them, that would be huge. Seems like there may be some lower tier guys who might fit the bill.

I did a little research. His full name is Prince Kwabena Oduro and he was a member of the 2017 FIBA U19 World Cup Canadian team who finished in first place. The games were played July 1st to the 9th, 2017 in Egypt. R.J. Barrett, the 5 star Duke recruit led the team averaging 21.6 PPG. Italy finished 2nd and USA was 3rd.
In the 8 games Prince was 10-23 (43.5%) from the free throw line but in one of the games I noticed he was 6 for 7 (85.7%) so I think with him it might be more a lack of concentration rather than a flaw in his shooting form. Like someone said he may be able to improve during the year off! Like OSU Flyer said at 6'8" 253 lbs. the guy is a bruiser. He has legs like tree trunks like Chip Hare had when he played from 1991 to 1995.
After watching his you tube videos I can tell he likes to dunk the ball a lot and is comfortable playing inside or outside. We haven't had a bruiser to go toe to toe with other centers in the A-10 for a long time. He averaged 9.1 PPG and 5.1 rebounds at Siena and I think he would probably be worth taking a chance. With the shortage of big men on the transfer market he just may be a diamond in the rough!
After playing on the same team with R.J. Barrett and several other great players on that Canadian team he must have learned something and it seems like AG is trying to add a little extra positive influence to our younger players with each guy he recruits.
A bruiser in practice next year will only make our taller players like Obi Toppin and Frankie Policelli be more ready for the rigors of the season!

I hope he visits the University of Dayton the 3rd week in May because we need someone with his size and potential. The list of big men we have recruited and did not improve for four years and used up a valuable scholarship could go on and on!

Siena transfer @p_havoc15 tells me he will visit Mississippi State next week and USF the following week. Averaged 9.1 ppg and 5.1 rpg.
|
Didn't realize he was a rookie/freshman.
Shot 48% in his only year at Siena. Weighs in at 253 pounds.
Let's get a visit and see more of this guy!
Where is the video?

9 and 5 boards his beast year is pretty darn good. He's a space eater in his high school videos. Could be a beast by junior year@excited!
oh yeah, he's the 33% FT shooter. Can't be good all around, can we? LOL

Siena transfer @p_havoc15 will take an official to Miss State May 3-5. He will then take officials to USF and Seton Hall.

Id take Obiagu in a heartbeat. Watched this kid a few times this year on TV. Huge ceiling. Top-100 kid out of HS. Great size. Good athlete. Tremendous rim protector. Could be what Big Steve was on a path toward. Maybe Grant's familiarity with the state of Florida can pull off some magic.
With Ibi, Obi, and Ike, it would be Bucky Bockhorn's Nightmare on Elm Street.

Ike’s real name is Ikechukwu Obiagu. He once had 11 blocks in one game! After watching his you tube videos I was impressed with how athletic he was. I thought he would be slow but he can get out and run and would seem to fit right in with the way AG likes to play. He would be a great rim protector if our guards and wings get beat off the dribble like they did many times last season.

I saw Obiagu play several times. He is a great defender, who needs work on his offensive game. He would be an awesome addition for UD, but he will have a bunch of big name schools after him. Could end up back home at Georgia, or AL or UC.

I agree with this but hoping his somewhat late decision to transfer has already knocked some schools out of the race. Its full-court press time. Run, don’t walk to get in front of this guy.

And he only played 10 minutes a game. Imagine him at 20 to 25 minutes, clogging the middle and altering shots?
We don't need offense from him. Or not much!

Only played 24 minutes in 10 games for the Bulldogs (2.4 mpg) this past season. 6"7" 236lbs is listed as a forward, not a center! I think we would be better off recruiting Ikey Obiagu from Florida St. 7'0" center with huge upside!

Ike Obiagu had 71 blocks in 364 minutes and shot about 32 percent on free throws. But shot 58 percent from the field. Florida State had two 7 footers on the team last year.

Sandiegoflyer: i concur. This team is crying loudly for two big guys. We have open scholarships and plenty of playing time up for grabs. What more could a big kid want? It would be a blessing to these kids to take hold of this opportunity.

Rodney Chatman's stats for Chattanooga this past season were almost identical to Jalen Crutcher. Chatman averaged 13.3 PPG and 4.5 assists while playing 32.3 minutes per game while Crutcher averaged 9.2 PPG and 4.4 assists while playing 31.2 minutes per game. Both players had 135 assists but Chatman had 89 turnovers for a 1.5 to 1 ratio while Crutcher had only 64 turnovers for a 2 to 1 ratio which we all agree was a feather in his cap for a freshman PG!
Rodney Chatman is a SO so he would sit one year and play two. The one positive that I haven't mentioned however is that he must drive to the basket a lot more and is more adept at drawing fouls than Jalen because he was 93 for 119 from the free throw line for 78.2% while Jalen was only 32 for 47 for 68%.
Since it seems there are a lot of PG's that are off the board in the 2018 class Chatman may be a good transfer to back up Jalen Crutcher his junior and senior seasons or maybe even start ahead of him although that might be a stretch! I hope we can get Kira Lewis or Tre Mann for 2019 but for next season Dwayne Cohill may need to play PG some to relieve Jalen.

You may be right but that wasn't the point I was trying to make! When McKinley Wright blew up his senior year he was going to be a Flyer up until the time of the coaching change. Some players are loyal and Anthony Grant was one of the first coaches with his Alabama connection to offer Kira Lewis so lets just see what happens!
I believe Rodney Chatman would be a good backup PG to have for two years. He seems to have the ability to get to the basket and draw fouls (shoots 78% from the line). Playing time is something we have to give to a reliable point guard. There are many transfers out there (almost 600 so far) so Anthony Grant and his staff need to exercise caution to keep team chemistry in using the 3 remaining scholarships.
Or they could ask myself or jack72 if they are deadlocked on choosing between two players! Tongue in cheek!
Seriously, you have to have fun with this recruiting stuff because how else would all of us get through the off season.
I would be remiss if I didn't thank OSU Flyer for keeping us up to date all the time! Thank you very much!!!

Minnesota took another higher rated PG from NYC in late August/early September taking them out of the running
I think it might have just been in Memphis in the end

Maybe we get one of them, maybe we don't. But until they commit to somewhere or tell AG they aren't interested, or announce a list that doesn't include UD, then I assume we are an option and I love that AG/staff identified and went after these kids long before they blew up on the AAU circuit.

Zagoria was not going to play much anyway at SH anyway. They have depth at guard positions including at least one transfer, McNight, coming off the one year waiting period.

Siena transfer Prince Oduro tells me he's considering Mississippi State, South Florida, New Mexico, Seton Hall, and UMass. Just visited Mississippi State. #shbb

They could most likely play together. Chatman is more of a driver...gets to the line quite a bit. He could certainly play the 2.

As long as they can both shoot - you can play them together when needed. Nothing wrong with a small lineup that can handle the ball.

Agree with that. Nothing wrong with a 2 PG look
Even with 4 guards that's a fight for minutes Crutcher/Jordan Davis/Cohill/Matos/Landers/Watson in 19/20 with Chatman added. With a 4 guard look that means Obi/Policelli are looking at fewer minutes.
I think it's a good pick up but I wonder how AG keeps everyone happy minutes wise. Maybe it's a Keith Dambrot style only the strong survive scenario

RI dominated the A10 last year - with basically 5 guards (Matthews, Dowtin, Russell, Garrett, & Robinson).

No doubt, I'm just wondering how you keep 7 upperclassman guards happy

Two scholarships still available. I don't think AG will bring in three transfers that have to sit next year. It would be nice to get a developmental BIG and a grad transfer point guard. That would leave two scholarships for next year (+ any transfers--it is obvious UD is not immune to the new normal)

I'd still take Shea Feehan for 1 year and then save 1 scholly for 2019 for a big, maybe two since Josh will graduate.

6'0" guard is an excellent shooter! Can play immediately! Presently getting other Div. 1 offers. Western Kentucky and others.
Sorry, only offer presently is from Bryant University. Interest from Western Kentucky, Oakland, Evansville, Drake, Manhattan, High Point, Delaware and Tulane.
Played for Div. III Eureka. Scored 17pts against Loyola of Chicago in a 96-69 loss!
