Better
Since I called out the fans last week, I guess I'd better be the first to acknowledge progress. That was a better effort by the fans tonight. Lets get this place rockin on Sunday. And bring your towels back with you.

It seemed like the cheesy time-out promotions weren't as obnoxious as usual
(we did get some free fried chicken, though).

And a better effort by the team, with some good plays, which made the crowd happy. It's a catch-22.

23 point leads and 50% shooting coupled with intense defensive effort tend to give the crowd something to get up for.

Very unselfish of the passers to feed Gavs and reward him for his hustle. Great to see.

I thought it was humorous, though, that after Gavs came in the first time, down on the offensive side, he gets to the left side of the key, then starts his part of the play, which was, curl under the basket, upto the foul line, and back to where he started. A full circle, doing nothing but running in a circle. I was watching to see if he did it again, and he didn't.
I can just hear it in the huddle. Miller: "Gavs! Go in, and run around in a circle while we set up the play. It will confuse them!"

Gav launched a three as well. Our section was ready to explode if it went in.

Absolutely right! Play like we did in Illinois, and I don't have much to cheer for. Play like we did last night, and I'm definitely voicing my satisfaction.
Also, if Alex the Gorilla's 3-ball fell, I fear it might have gotten so loud the place would have caved in!

I agree that play overall and good plays ignite a crowd. The one thing that always ignites a crowd is a dunk, and we get very few these days compared to a couple of years ago. I jumped out of my chair at home last night only about four times, and two were on the Gav's dunks.
Opponents also matter, especially to the UD fan who does not keep up the way we do. After about 5 minutes last night, my wife asked, "who in the world is Iona?"

Its a sad commentaary on our list of opponents that Iona gets the towel-in-every-seat promotion. Well if you look across the vast wasteland that is our home schedule they are one of the top games.

I heard that Gavs family was in the stands> I think the team was trying to give him some highlights for his family that came all the way from France.

I did find things a bit underwhelming still. It was a very late arriving crowd, as over the half the seats were empty during starting lineups. Heck, I could see many in the lower court side seats not even stand up during the intros, or acknowledge they were going on at all. My thinking is people hate the huddle with no individual recognitions for players, but that's what Dayton wants to be this year. People need to find their own way to cheer for that, and get excited that this is what the team is going to be about and be proud of that fact.
Few if any waved the towels given out until the band/students sections started to do so. Don't think things helped from the bad mash up of music the team took the court to, starting with Jock Jams and then a mix of that and Party Rock over top one another. DJ just isn't cutting it, especially with the mistake of not muting music he queued up for a timeout during game action. Very amateurish.
Everyone seemed to at least cheer more during the game, which was good. Will need more of that on Sunday. Hoping its on par to A10 games with the early afternoon start time.
No offense to anyone, but it's on you to know the quality of opponent UD is playing in a game, as there's plenty of places out there to let you know (DDN, FN, Polls, Sagarin, KenPom, etc.) Fan knowledge does have a direct effect on wanting to participate, imo. In Iona's case, they've been in town for the NCAA Tournament the last few seasons, so they should have been well known as a quality team to everyone. Thankfully for Sunday, the name should be enough.

I mentioned this in the game thread. All of the empty lower seats did not look good on national television. I thought I was watching a Miami Heat game.
7:00 is not too early of a start. I know people work, but I'm not buying that as an excuse. I was bummed when I saw all of the empty seats to start the game. This Dayton team is a good team and like it or not, Iona is one of the better out of conference home games.
I think it is time for us Flyer Faithful to start buying into this team and support them like they deserve to be supported and forget about the past.

The thing I noticed last night was that tip off was @7:03. usually the tip is around 7:06 or 7:07. I knew I was running a couple minutes later than normal but it did start earlier than other games. It might have been because NBC Sports was televising. Did anyone else notice that as well?

They blew the horn to start at 7:03, but commercials weren't over. The players stood there for a bit a stared at each other until the tip actually went up at 7:05 according to my DVR. I'm sure the whole deal was TV-driven.

There was a large break from the horn and the actual tip. Willie had the band run through a few more times to take up the slack. I noticed because I thought about running for another beverage!!!
