Don Donoher wins 2017 Dean Smith Award

http://www.daytondailynews.com/sport...ouqUSVD8UeKfP/

"Don Donoher, the all-time winningest men’s basketball coach in Dayton Flyers history, will receive the Dean Smith Award at a dinner in Dayton on Dec. 13. The award, presented by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, annually honors “an individual in college basketball who embodies the spirit and values of the late North Carolina coach.”

And in an even greater announcement, Bill Cunningham and the SEGman give Donoher the 700WLW Citizen of the Day Award for this honor.

Awesome, Great Award, and very deserving for Coach Donoher.

But silly willy Cunningham isn't someone you want an award from. I called his show a few years back, and told him what a lousy Catholic he is. He spent the rest of the broadcast whining about it.

Finally some good news in the world and something to cheer about. Watched him for four years and always thought he was an excellent in-game coach and coach who made use of what he had. He coached against many of the best - Ray Meyers, Denny Crum, John Wooten and many others whose names I can't remember.

Perhaps whoever is responsible for this award should reconsider who it is named after. Wasn't Dean a part of the 20-year charade at UNC that enrolled BB players in sham courses and awarded grades when they didn't attend? With the current FBI probe illustrating the ineptitude of the NCAA in investigating the big boys and giving them anything more than a slap on the wrist, an award that cites the spirit and values of a coaching icon should be renamed after someone whose spirit and values did not include cheating!

I'm happy for Don Donoher and he deserves the award.

But my cynical side said that given the current cloud over the coaches active today, it was a "safe" award and the committee won't fear seeing the name of the recipient in the near future under the banner of "FBI Indictment"

I agree on where you are coming from, but I would think that this decision was made weeks/months ago?

Dean Smith retired in 1997. The classes started in 1999.

Thank you, I am sure we all realized that. Anyway, I suspect I could have said that silly willy is no one you want or need praise from. There you go CJ. Because if Cunningham is part of the USBWA, there is no-longer a need to follow sports; and it's getting kind of iffy as is.

I think no better choice exist than Coach Donoher; but realistically, I am surprised "they" picked him. I am aiming that at the writers, the statuesque, and the world. Don Donoher seems to be too good of a human being for them; and it seems as if his time as a college coach was several lifetimes ago. That's just how it feels.

Nice article. What Finkel lacked in jumping ability or defense, he was an accurate shooter and probably a 75% foul shooter but I don't know for sure. Around the basket he had a great touch. I was at the regional NCAA game at UK when UD played Michigan with Cazzie Russell and others. We got beat but I think that Finkel was the high scorer. Next night we beat DePaul and Errol Palmer in the consolation game. Michigan beat Vanderbuilt with Clyde Lee in the final and then lost to Gail Goodrich and UCLA in NCAA finals.

Why can I remember this stuff and not what I had for breakfast. Because Finkel, Donoher, May et als were memorable people and events, that's why.

My all-time favorite Flyer, Finkel has the record for career pts average at 23.7. He shot 62% for his career, and averaged over 13 rebounds a game. He was a 3rd team All-American .

Outstanding article! Many things I learned about Hank Finkel that I didn't already know.

I was a sophomore Finkel's senior year. I didn't play basketball but I knew Eddie Kwest really well and spent a lot of time in the training room and knew many of the players. That team had a lot of practical jokers. As I remember, two juniors, John Samanich and Jim Wannemacher, sore back and all, were the biggest offenders but on one occasion, sophomore, Bobby Jo Hooper was the guilty party. The players used to put their Converse All Star gym shoes next to their lockers after practice so they would dry out for the next day. Hooper put honey all over Finkel's size 16's or 18's (I can't remember the exact size) and Eddie Kwest came in the next morning and there were hundreds of ants crawling all over Finkel's Converse! Everyone got a big laugh out of it!

I agree Don Donoher deserves this award and it is kind of ironic that it is named after Dean Smith because in Smith's 6th season coaching and Donoher's 2nd season they went head to head in 1966-67 in the Final Four in Louisville, Ky and we all know how that game came out! The Flyers won handily as Don May made his first 13 shots in a row at the beginning of the game! I was sitting in the middle of the North Carolina cheering section and some guy behind me tapped me on the shoulder and said, "****, doesn't that guy ever miss"? I said, "No".

I remember one home game against Villa Madonna who had an about 6’7” 280 physical center who kept pounding on big Hank. Finally fed up after a play on our basket Finkel trailed their center going back down court. Hank reached under the center’s shorts, grabbed his jock strap pulled to far backwards and then let it go wacking him in the derrière. No foul but he got even. My favorite Flyer.

For sheet historical enjoyment, google Dayton NCAA Basketball History through ESPN and focus on 1965, 66 and 67. I started Sept. 64 graduated May 68 so I remember these games and times. Open up each bracket. Look at the teams we played and who were in the tournament and try to remember some of those very good basketball coaches.

1965 - We beat Ohio U by 1. Buses around midnight brought students to the airport to meet the team coming home and we were running all around the airport and onto the field. I can still remember the looks on people there. Security was not so good then. Then we lost in the regional semi to Michigan by 27.

1966 - We beat Miami Ohio by 7 and lost to Kentucky in the regional by 7.

1967 - Beat Western Kentucky by 2. Beat Tennessee by 1. Campus went bonkers. Beat Virginia Tech by 5 in OT and then beat NC by 14.

Quite a record for a little Catholic school in southwestern Ohio although we were a basketball power at that time. A lot of coaching credit goes to Donoher. With the teams and personnel we had, a lot of coaches would never have gotten UD that far. I was also at the game in Madison Square Garden one year when we beat Houston, who had Don Chaney and Elvin Hayes on the time.

Great times and a credit to Donoher. Too bad they waited so long to recognize him.
