The inconsistent shooting you're talking about wasn't one game to the next, it seriously declined between the beginning of the season and the end of the season. That's not a normal thing.
Nobody knows s___t about what exactly went on and if you think 13-15 dudes that all think they should be playing 35 mpg get along that all got their rear-ends kissed in HS then you simply have never laced on a pair of sneakers at any level....Got news for you: Not everybody on a team gets along and also got news for you that there are teammates that despise each other...Also, got news for you that some players like chicks that others are dating if that makes you feel better..

Did you watch the celebration after the VCU game or were you writing your astute prediction that this team just doesn't have it and patting yourself on the back..

Simply put, this was a very unskilled shooting team, has been, and it got NO better once KP got hurt, Big Steve still couldn't stay in games, and defenses extended out to the 3 point line with very litrtle low post game for the most part....

You got a 6' 2 guard that simply can't face up and hit a shot from 10 feet out and you got a 4 in Pollard who is mainly a bull in a china shop.....None of that makes a half-court offense very consistent.....Once Pollard got hurt the rebounding suffered and the low post defensive presence stopped, thus, many fewer fast breaks...

Steve...

I agree with the actual reasons you give for the lack of play that caused losses...but there are valid points on both sides that all are tied together.

When a guard FAILS to attempt entry passes to a WIDE open post player...repeatedly...there are issues somewhere as to why that guy in the paint isn't getting his. That is a lack of "trueteam".

Many of the hard fought wins were because one player decided to take over. Scoochie took over a couple games in a row. This wasn't attributed to team ball, but rather his ability to take over.

Sure, we had locker room issues back in the day...but no one was screwing someone else's girlfriend...if that were the case...the problem player would have been blacklisted and ran off by his fellow teammates.

You are absolutely correct in why the X's and O's and the execution of such caused poor play...but you have D Davis who is an absolute head case that doesn't play D. Freshman that are lost on the defensive end of the court. Hurt post. Post that can't stay out of foul trouble consistently. Two of your best players that have off the court problems. Another big with attitude issues. KD who is a monster on D, aggressive at the rack, but streaky from the perimeter.....We can be critical of play all over the place, but team psychologists aren't brought in because everything is a problem with executing on the floor.

These guys have all the talent a team could ask for. Something wasn't there and is wasn't the inability to convert against lesser competition

They play their best game in a month against Richmond in the A10 tourney, shoot lights out, don't lose the lead, and their are high 5's, hugs, and kisses amongst all the players again with all the right words being spoken..

Now the chemistry issues all of a sudden happen with losses to good and/or times like SJU, St Bonnie, etc. ?? Guys, again, when you lack good, consistent shooters, have a key player miss multiple games that you rely on enormously with NOBODY that can step into that role to even give 75% of what that player gave, and play terrible perimeter defense defending 3's which this team did a large portion of the year even "before" the chemistry excuse came up then you are going to struggle especially with the back-end of the schedule loaded up.....
My wife has selective hearing and memory. Maybe our Flyers have selective chemistry.

Good post.

Some valid points but I'll rebuttal a couple here..Let's not forget that for well over 10 years (and plenty longer) UD has never had a real top post player the size of SM.....It's not easy to incorporate that into your offense that has been so so different for years...

There's an incredible amount of trust that is required to feel comfortable to get the ball into your post player....But let's not act like SM did not get the ball his fair share..First off, his time on the court was diminished incredibly because he simply could not stay on the court due to the foul issues...That's the worst thing that can cause havoc to gaining a low post presence and getting the ball in there..Secondly, as the fouls increased so did big Steve's lack of confidence....He was starting to play a little bit on eggshells and a wrong move here or there creates another foul to a guy they really really needed.....Sure, Scoochie missed him a few times on entry passes but Scoochie is no idiot and he recognized these same concerns by not asking the big guy to do too much...Big Steve was far more valuable, early on, on the defensive end especially early on the way UD allowed dribble drives into the lane and pick and rolls to the hoop with no one to defend the rim.

I'll also add in reference to the low post that Pollard got off to a very very slow start this year in playing the post....He just did not seem comfortable down there with SM in there at the same time, as well, and being the highly limited skilled player that Pollard is created havoc especially with Kyle Davis struggling in that half-court..Only when Big Steve lost his starting job did Pollard start to play better ball offensively...

As far as your comment about "many of the hard fought wins were because one player decided to take over", is that such a bad thing? You saw what happen with MSU when "their" guy in Valentine went out who also takes over games...They lost 3 of 4 or 4 of 5 and that's with far better skilled players than what UD has and a better coach..You think Oklahoma is the same without Buddy Heild who also takes over games? Every coach in America would LOVE to have one guy, let alone a couple like UD had in both Cooke and Smith, have the ability to take over games.....No good team out there is able to come back in tight games, playing from behind, without veteran leadership and 1-2 guys that are able to lead the charge...

Charles Cooke was playing well over his head shooting the ball the first 2/3 of the year.. Do you actually believe he was close to a 50% 3 point shooter after not being within 15-20 points of that his entire career? Scoochie Smith was NOT the player for alot of the year that he displayed against Oklahoma a year ago..Alot of that is his personality............If Scoochie Smith believes he's the best player on UD the way he did the games he put his superman cape on in attacking the rim then UD is a far better team.....If Baby D comes even with a couple zip codes of the shooter he was a year ago instead of the 27% shooter he was this year then all of a sudden UD has a half-court offense with space and quadrants on the floor to attack instead of 5 defenders within 20 feet of the basket...

Again, making baskets on wide open shots cures alot of evils and makes people happy....Defending 3's also does the same and they were terrible all year long at it even when they were 11-2 and there was no mention of cancer on this team.......

The really good teams can pull out a win when they are struggling, but even then if the opponent is playing lights out, it's just not your day. Just ask Mich St.
Actually Izzo said his team played very well outside of the first five minutes of the game and they hit plenty of shots in their game to the tune of almost 56% and 46% overall and from 3 so not sure the statement about just ask MSU is applicable in this case. Izzo chalked it up to being beaten by a better team that day. Re
