I can't stand listening to him talk. Calling out fouls if the officials didn't call a foul for Baylor....

I was at the game, so didn't have the displeasure of listening to him. He is so BCS biased, it is unreal. UD is 19-10 against BCS teams when only chances to play them are neutral and road games (yes exceptions exist). He forgets home team wins like 75%+ in NCAA and +5 point advantage so of course BCS who play non-con home games win a ton ...

He was very complimentary of UD most of the time praising our toughness, passing, athletic ability, . . .

I couldn't disagree more. I think he and Clark Kellog are the best tv analysts in the business.
Also felt he was very impressed with UD, and complimentary as well. I think he will speak well of us throughout the season...

I think Jay has been in UD's corner since he accompanied Coach Knight to the speaking engagement a few years back. He generally speaks highly of Dayton.

Well, it appeared to me he kept taking jabs at Dayton. Making fun of where Smith went to high school. Calling fouls on the air when the guys he talked up for Baylor would miss a shot. His partner brought up that Dayton won the tourney back in 2003 and Jay had to comment that it was a weak field. Just seemed to pull the negative things out of the story too much. Oh well it was a tough night.

It was BY FAR the weakest field in the past 15 years...and I thought McDonough made that comment.
I have no issue with Bilas and I don't see any bias against UD. If a guy talks for 2 hours on two straight night, it's almost guaranteed he is going to say something that isn't liked. I want the color guy to have opinions...it brings color to the game.

At some point in the game Bilas did say the he really likes the way Dayton plays. The comment about the 'pocket protectors' came from the other dude.

I may have misinterpreted the remarks about Scoochies school but I took it to mean he attended a school with good basketball while having high academic standards. Maybe I just naturally look for and hear positives as opposed to negatives!

I didn't think it was appropriate to bring up a "weak field" when the Flyers won the Maui either. However, it was Sean (Syracuse alum) McDonough who dropped that little gem. Too bad he won't be able to call a Flyers defeat of the Orange.

Everyone chill - no one has been disrespected here. No jabs were made at your school or Scoochie's school. They just called the game and commented on what we all saw - the Flyers looked like a new team - played with energy, great ball movement, won a lot if loose balls, shot very well, showed we have multiple guys who can drive to the hoop, etc. what more do you want?

I don't how to look it up, but the field in 2003 Maui Invitational was rather weak that year. It seems like some on this board get upset unless the announcers on ESPN talk about the Flyers as if they were filling in for Larry and Bucky. I didn't watch last night's game, but I though Bilas was pretty even handed during the Gonzaga game.

On the one hand it was a weaker field but on the other hand it's not UDs fault that Ohio State lost their opening game and Villanova couldn't make the 1st place game denying UD 2 wins against major conference teams

Sean the play by play guy mentioned the weak field. He said I think I remember correctly "with all due respect to Dayton they won with the weakest field this tourny has ever had" or something to that effect.
Jay is usually with us. He is kind of an eliteist Dukie sometimes but he pimps us plenty. Good follow on Twitter for you people that tweet.

Both of those examples you brought up were stated by McDonough. I caught them and was a little annoyed by those comments, although the Maui comment is technically true, does it need to be mentioned? I got the feeling the whole game that McDonough wanted a Baylor-Syracuse championship only because they are two "big names" (although I still have a hard time considering Baylor a "big name" in either basketball or football). McDonough then went on to advertise the championship game between Syracuse and Baylor as "what should be a fantastic game" which could be the case, but I know **** well he wouldn't of advertised the Dayton-Syracuse game that way.
So, in summary, McDonough really got on my nerves last night but Bilas has nothing but positive things to say about Dayton, its program and fans.

Bilas and Andy Katz always seem to be the first people to sing praise for UD when UD gives them the slightest bit of reason to. I know Andy Katz continually mentions UD in his articles.

Sean McDonough...graduate of...Syracuse.
He may or may not call the games w/ a biased eye towards Syracuse, but its a footnote. In either case, the 2003 Mauii championship has 0 effect on this seasons team or this year's tournament. Its a footnote, something you highlight in each of the games for the viewing audience some who may not be aware where Dayton is located or their basketball history. Technically speaking, he is correct that was a weak field, that was during the period that the NCAA was enforcing the "2 exempts tournaments every 4 seasons" rule and I believe several teams had to pull out (hence why Hawaii was in the field which probably did well in attendance but poorly in hotel and dinner reservations). That rule was taken out after like a season or two as they realized these tournaments make their money on the fan bases traveling to the site of the tournament. Anyhoo, while its technically a correct observation, it really serves no spot in a broadcast 10 years later. Its a backhanded slap no matter how competitive the field may or may not have been. I could see the observation coming up in 2003 when discussing the bubble or UD's seeding, but 10 years later it recks of petiness and reflects poorly on his announcing capabilities (which is generally speaking very good)
As far as the comments of the fouls, Jay has been one of the big proponnents to the rule changes this year, wouldn't surprise me that he was doing that in many games. Baylor was bigger and more aggressive last night, Dayton was playing beyond the arc. He didn't get many observations to point out a foul on Baylor that the refs missed. Overall, I enjoy Jay's analysis. Like others have said, I've always felt that he's generally positive on UD since that event with Knight in town.

California and Syracuse I believe backed out of the 2003 tourney at the last minute. Just a coincidence they are in this year's tourney. I remember making a graphic for the tourney with all 8 teams, then having to change it when the NCAA instituted those temporary rules forbidding teams from playing in-season exempt tourneys more than once every 3-4 years.

True, I don't mean to diminish winning it that year. The Flyers had a very good team that year and could have won against those teams.

With the NBE situation still in a state of flux, apparently, this would not be a bad time for a strong performance by the Flyers.

think he was fine on the baylor game (couldn't get the gonzaga and cal games streamed internationally). I'll take him any day over Dukie V (I still remember him dancing on our mid court after a last second Detroit win back in the 70's). I'd love to corner him at one his Broken Egg appearances next time I get to Sarasota

Bilas wrote the book on 'toughness' and at the end of the game he said the Flyers are a tough team. This says a lot to those familiar with Bilas' views on toughness.
In general, I also agree that he has been very complimentary of the Flyers, and I bet his power rankings will reflect that.

He simply gushed praise all over our team all through the second half. The guy was surprised at our skill level, and wasted no words in saying so. He went away knowing this edition of Dayton is really good.

22 seconds to go in the Syracuse and Baylor Game, and Bilas is still saying " I was really impressed with Dayton"
If we get many votes in the polls in the weeks to come, I think we have Bilas and all his free PR to thank for helping out!

Make sure you thank him for his tireless efforts in raising millions of dollars for the Jimmy V foundation for cancer research with 100% of the money going to research!

It was a weak field...BUT The banner will continue to hang amongst the likes of Kentucky and Duke. Go UD!

I assume that nobody minded when Bilas said essentially "picking UD for 7th in the A10 was a mistake, this is a good team" or "they have several guys who can put the ball on the floor, they are tough to play against"

Anybody that watched the three games and doesn't think Bilas was highly complimentary of Dayton has a persecution complex. Dayton earned, and got, his respect. Watch this highlight video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBfshiw3fcs and tell me otherwise.
I liked Bilas and his analyses before, now I think I have a man crush.

I find it both interesting and humorous a thread that attempted to draw out the ire and ilk of all the anti-Bilas and Bilas haters actually brought out the exact opposite. Just goes to show you how good and objective Bilas really is. If anything, he was way over the top with his gushing and praise of the Flyers.

With the way the Flyers played this week, even Billy Packer would have had to have said something nice about a "mid-major."

I though Bilas did a good job being balanced and pointing out the good and bad of teams. he was really complimentary of UD and very informed about our team as a whole. I think he does a good job dissecting the game and explaining some x and o stuff.

We earned the praise we got.
We Flyers treat our team like a child. We criticize, correct, cheer, and are passionate about their successes and failures. But along with all that, don't dare let someone else assume that role with my kid. Especially a sports talking head.
Jay Bilas is objective. He speaks from a position of very strong basketball knowledge and ok, tainted a bit with his role as a network shill with big box bias. Last night he genuinely believed every compliment he gave the Flyers. And there were many and deserved.
Not once did I hear the dreaded, "but California was missing their stud with the scratched eye or this outcome might have been different".
This Maui success is the gift that will keep on giving.

Jay Bilas appreciates UD and UD Arena because he often covered games here as a journalist before he was on the ESPN circuit. I've heard him say that a few times.

I heard Bilas say "this Dayton Flyer Team is very good". It was great to hear and I am sure many College Basketball Fans who do not root for the Dayton Flyers found themselves rooting for the Dayton Flyers in this tournament (which includes potential recruits). It was fun/exciting watching this tournament unfold and see how our UD Team has progressed. I remember last year speaking the Associate AD and he said "I guess you're not an Archie fan" and I replied I want to be the biggest Archie fan there is. I am now becoming one as I enjoy how he is using his players and keeping them involved. Granted, he definitely has a few more pieces to work with this year.
