what a crock

This is in the summary on the ESPN site along with the commentators saying you never get at for throwing a chair:

"Then Cooley got hit with a technical during a timeout, after his chair fell over. Providence assistants pleaded with officials that it was a harmless accident, but they couldn't talk Cooley out of the T."

FELL OVER?!?! Oh STFU. It happened right in front of me. First, I told the guy I was with "the refs should stay at the other end of the court because they're begging for a T." Second, the ref was standing right next to it and clearly saw the coach HURL a chair across the floor and say something. It did not "fall over." That's like saying Bobby Knight "distributed his chair in a new location."

Stop making excuses for the better team winning.

It gets better--that was the AP writeup, so pretty much any news outlet in America can use it

They showed it on TV and Cooley pushes the chair over on purpose. In post-game he says he didn't even know it hit the floor. I believe that, He was so mad at the time at his team he probably didn't know he grab the back of that chair and pushed/shoved it to the floor.

NCAA head of refs supported the call and quoted the Rule for it. A coach can not grab a chair and throw it to the floor, even if he is just trying to fire up his team. It's a line you don't cross because nothing subjective on the call. Next time it could hit someone --- even if it wasn't intentional.

Clearly the reporter above did not see the replay.

Good Call.

Seriously, stop the whining. We won. The announcers, refs, NCAA nor ESPN are out to get us. This team are a bunch of winners. Keep winning. That will gain respect. Please stop playing the victim!!

The chair. The location. The fans. The flagrant foul. The Loch Ness Monster. Whats next?

- Where were these melonheads when #4 seed Dayton was sent to the dry tundra hinterlands of Spokane Washington?

- Where were these melonheads when Dayton played in Carrier Dome West aka the First Niagara Center in front of 19,250 fans of which 17,500 were wearing Orange apparel? Had we lost would we have been afforded the luxury of excusing it on the partial crowd?

- Where were these melonheads when we were the most under-seeded team in the bracket by a consensus of 136 out of 136 brackets on the Bracket Matrix, nearly missing the entire NCAA tounament but for Connecticut puking in the AAC Final?

- Where were these melonheads when the NCAA forced us to play an extra tournament game as punishment for being so under-seeded that it turned into a story by itself?

- Where were these melonheads when our best defensive player picked up 2 fouls in the first 2 minutes of the first half vs Boise State, and then our best offensive player picked up his third foul with 7 minutes left in the first half (home-cooked officials again), forcing us to "go deep into our bench" and use the only two guys off the pine -- both midgets like the five midgets we start every game -- that we have for much of the first 20 minutes?

- Where's the outrage about how Providence's 7fter didn't abuse our midget interior post players like Cole Aldrich in 2009? Youd think if he could walk and chew gum he could get a double-double against our retreads.

-- Where were the goons talking about us playing our 5th game in 8 days with 7 guys and six recruited scholarship players? We shoulda looked dead. Instead we made Providence look slow and inept and unprepared. Maybe "having too much time off is a real disadvantage".

-- Weren't fouls like 6-2 against UD when Cooley got T'd up w/about 3 minutes left? They had played nearly the entire half w/o fouls. Cooley was upset b/c he thought the prior tie-up jump ball that favored Dayton wasnt really a jump. It wasnt. It was a foul on Providence that was uncalled that ended up a tie-up shortly thereafter.

---

Bottom line: Dayton and Dayton fans would have been MORE THAN HAPPY to take an extended drive to Jacksonville or Pittsburgh or Louisville for a first round Thu/Fri game as an 8/9/10 seed and avoid all of this nonsense from the very beginning. You name the town, you name time -- we'll be there. It's cold and dreary and depressing in the Midwest in the winter. We're dying for an excuse to head somewhere out of town to cure cabin fever and with some luck enjoy warmer temps. Trust us, it would have been the easiest sell.

But you wanted to do this the hard way, didn't you. You wanted to completely repudiate our body of work and stick us at the absolute end of the line and force us to, once again, do more than others, with less than others, more often than others, more successfully than others.

It's not our fault we called your bluff on all of this and decided to make lemonade out of lemons. Its not our fault nobody else can draw fans to the First Four to watch a pair of #16 seeds battle it out in front of 12,000 strangers which puts you the selection committee in the tight spot of sending us there as well. You apparently wanted us playing in Dayton. We just play the games you tell us to play. We would have had thousands of fans in Louisville or Pittsburgh or Jacksonville. Its what we do. Nobody questions it when Big Blue Nation makes every venue a home game, so why the disdain when we do the same thing? What are we supposed to do? Stay home? Was Kansas 1988 national title affixed with an asterisk in the NCAA Record Books because they beat Oklahoma at Kemper Arena?

If Dayton can go into Buffalo and beat #3 seed Syracuse in front of 17,000 Cuse fans, nobody -- NOBODY -- has any excuse about crowd noise, venue, or location. You play well enough to win and you'll win. If you dont, youll lose. Thats how we got trucked vs. Tulsa -- we deserved to get trucked b/c we were pitiful for 33 minutes. Ohio State was a freaking unprotected #8 seed and played at UD Arena and lost to #9 Siena. Where was the outrage over Siena's obstacles??? Almost everyone agrees we shoulda been an 8/9 seed this year, so its an identical situation? I never heard a peep from anyone in 2009 when the Buckeyes "enjoyed all the home cooking" (but still lost).

We didnt create the circumstances, but we're certainly not going to apologize for them. The game tonight could have been played at the Duncan Donuts Center and the crowd would have been 50/50. Its what we do, its who we are. We neutralize opponents through our support in the stands. We're called the Flyer Faithful, not the Flyer Geo-Friendly Faithful. Its why Charleston, Orlando, Maui, Duquesne, Fordham, First Union Center, and a host of other places turn into our little cauldron of noise.

The beat writers and Twitter twits are underselling us and dont even know it. They think it's a mileage thing when its more like a DNA thing.

Boom! Well-played ball, Chris...right across the face of the goal. All Flyer fans would happily one-touch that rascal into the back of the net.

From the heart! The DNA? You nailed it better than a deep 3 from Sibert past NBA range.

Somewhere the talking heads are wondering "Just who ARE YOU GUYS?" We have been away from the truly NATIONAL scene for so long that they are trying to figure out this 'new guy'.

I dont know how Gonzaga started but it may have been this same thing .... But sooner rather than later, I believe we ARE the next 'gonzaga' except it will be the WE ARE UD!

Amen, Chris!

Sunday's game will look like a sea of red given both teams colors, but, there won't be any more Oklahoma fans than last night. There WILL be a lot more UD fans there on Sunday!

After reading their message boards I now realize we aren't the biggest whiners after a loss. They honestly believe the name on the front of their jersey has more value than the name on the front of our jersey. Chris , I was laying in bed thinking the same thing about our Buffalo trip last year and was going to bring this up. Providence must have the largest student body and alumni full of entitled brats in the entire NCAA. If you haven't read their message boards take some time today to read them. It is amazing how many people they throw under the bus from Dunn to Henton to the NCAA committee to Cooley. Only a few would give The Flyers credit for outplaying big bad Providence. It sure was nice to sleep with a smile as big as the Cheshire Cat that caught the mouse. Next!

I can guarantee he said something and the ref had rabbit ears--I'm telling you, watching it live I was saying out loud "the ref should just stay away from that huddle" but he walked right up to it. I can almost guarantee it was as much what the coach said as he "gently tipped over the chair" as it was the chair.

And Chris: standing slow clap.

If there is a rule in the book about slamming the chair, then it is a "T" pure and simple and should be called as such. I didn't know the rule and didn't think it was directed at the refs at the time and therefore didn't think the call was correct. I wasn't unhappy about it... but I didn't think it was correct at the time.

I do agree that the threads today have had a level of whininess which I think is unfortunate. I think it distracts from the celebratory threads. It distracts from fact that our team is the lead photo on ESPN.com. Most important, it distracts from the team. The reason many of us hold this year's team in such high regard is the way they have handled adversity. It seems odd that the way we celebrate them is by concentrating on every perceived slight.

Be unapologetic. We won. We beat 2 good teams that both deserved to be in the tournament.

Let me also add that a 2 seed Ohio State was sent to UD Arena in 2006 and lost to 7th seeded Georgetown. It happens. The team playing close to home can be beaten by teams that play better.

And FYI: we are now four spots ahead of Providence in ESPN's BPI. It was no fluke. We are the better team.

That and that. 5 games in 8 days. Including playing in a championship game on selection Sunday.

Let them whine. I hope OK is reading everyone of them, especially the ones that say Dayton isn't a good team.

Coulda. Shoulda. Woulda. Not what you want your off-season to be. Like Chris said, you either played good enough to win or you did not.

Next!
I spent about a half hour reading their Scout Board this morning and it was hilarious. cj, you hit the nail on the head. There were more complaints than Carters's got little liver pills! They started by saying Kyle fouled Dunn first before the flagrant one elbow! Truth be known, besides the early foul trouble, Dunn was frustrated the whole game by Kyle Davis and ended up with 7 turnovers!

Then there was Cooley's chair incident. Every excuse in the book! The officials had to call the T because the violation is in the book which the head of officials for the NCAA stated after the game. In golf, if you ground your sand wedge in the sand trap it is a two stroke penalty, no ifs, ands or buts!

The funniest complaint they had was with their seeding. Ha, you've got to be kidding me! They said the Flyers essentially got a home game in Columbus! I was at the game and their crowd was sparse. As usual, Flyer fans were everywhere! Most of their complainers stayed home and watched the game on TV.

The only guys comments I agreed with is "peeps for life" as he complimented Archie on his game plan. He said it was the best game plan against the Friars all season and it thoroughly frustrated Dunn and Henton! In short, he said the Friars got outplayed in every facet of the game. He was even challenged to a fight by one other guy! It was a real tongue in cheek read!

Nor is anyone complaining about Ky playing in Louisville. Even though the opponent will be Cincy there will be 10-1 fans from Ky vs Cincy.

But that is not a home game????

Angry jerks!

I couldn't sleep and got out of bed at 3am and started reading the reviews on our win. They were 95% making excuses for Providence's loss.

*they had to wait all week to play long after prime time
*they had to travel 700 miles where Dayton was in commuting distance
*Dayton's played two "home" games and the NCAA really blew that one
*of course the free throw disparity was a lead to one article.

I have never read so many excuses offered to the loser as I absorbed early this morning. The Providence coach was the only one that had any measure of objectivity.

Truly believe that what motivate most of the venom was we capped off a lot of people's bad bracket predictions for yesterday and they were looking for alibi's.

I can only hope that all those talking heads and beat writers had Oklahoma moving on. Because all those tools are going to be trying to find excuses Sunday night for their continued inept prognostications.

After reading that crap I really really couldn't sleep.

"Neutral site." - Ed Cooley. Like Marshawn Lynch's "I'm just here so I don't get fined," he repeated this several times, sarcastically, in this morning's press conference.

I got news for you, coach:

1) Only the 1 through four seeds are geographically protected against a nearby opponent possibly gaining a NEAR home-court. You want protection, EARN a better seed.

2) Dayton fans are going to get a near home-court advantage in almost ANY venue. Memphis - check. Columbus - check. Charleston, San Juan, Maui, Orlando - check. Buffalo - fail (the Syracuse fans bought all the tickets, understandably). I didn't see any articles or coaches crying about Dayton's home-court advantage in Memphis 12 months ago - but there it was.

3) Derosiers - 0-0 FGA, 0-0 FTA, 5 Reb, 0 OffReb.
Chukwu - 0-0 FGA, 0-0 FTA, 0 Reb.
Bentil 2-5 FGA, 1-2 FTA, 9 Reb.

Where was your gameplan to take advantage of the size differential, coach?
You had 13 offensive rebounds, but a lot of those were long, because your team, that is not good at threes, was jacking up threes all day. A team that averaged 16 3FGA per game attempted 26.

4)Henton 7/26 on FGs. 0/1 on FTs.
Dunn 4/13 on FGs. 2/3 on FTs.

Your stars were 28% from the floor. Maybe you could take a peek at your game plan and in-game adjustments. Were you taking the wrong kinds of shots?

Dayton has an in-your-jock wing defender. Did your gameplan account for something other than weak ball screens to get Dunn free? Dayton has a second excellent wing defender. Did your game plan account for the height differential versus Sibert by posting Henton up?

How many low post paint touches did your bigs get, coach? Or how many times did Derosiers get the ball on the baseline, 14 feet from the basket, and get his pocket picked by a double team WHEN THE SECOND DEFENDER WAS FACING HIM? Did you coach him to recognize the double team? Did Dunn flash to the basket on the double team (which often came from his man)?

5) Providence players with >3 minutes played: 7
Dayton players with >3 minutes played: 7
Starters average minutes: Providence 33 Dayton 35.2

What part of your gameplan accounted for Dayton's short bench, coach? Have you not properly developed your bench to be able to play them more than three minutes? Was that the "neutral site's" fault? Dayton went seven deep BECAUSE THEY HAVE SEVEN PLAYERS, coach.

6) Offensive Points per Possession: Dayton 1.01 Providence 0.75
7) Effective FG%: Dayton 52.4 Providence 42.4
8) Turnover Rate: Dayton 18.4% Providence 22.2%

Your team was OUTPLAYED, coach. Keep on blaming the neutral site, coach.

9) The Flagrant Foul on an inadvertent (which it was), mild contact (which it was), elbow to the head (which it was), should probably NOT be a foul, let alone a flagrant one. But coach, your beef is with the Rules Committee, not the "neutral site." The fact is that the rule states absolutely clearly that that action is BY DEFINITION a flagrant foul, it is reviewable, and 100% of referee crews call it 100% of the time.

Did you coach your players not to throw elbows, coach? Or was it the neutral site's fault for clouding the referees' judgment on a call that is made 100% of the time?

10) The technical foul should have been a non-call, because it's clear that your chair slam was not directed in anger at the ref. However, the ref that T'd you up had called 40 Ts this year. Do you have no responsibility to research the crew that will be calling your game and learning their tendencies? And there is a rule specifically on the books about chair throwing. Maybe if you're trying to be demonstrative to your team, throw a towel next time.

11) The technical foul cost you one point, as Dayton would have had the ball anyway (common foul before the time out) and ended up turning the ball over on the next possession anyway.

12)
Code:
     Kenpom BPI Sagarin RPI Average
DAY 32 29 36 30 32
PRV 31 35 28 22 29
How about instead of "neutral site," try "Dayton is a pretty **** good team, actually about as good as we are, that was significantly underseeded, and maybe we were a little bit overseeded, and darned if they just didn't play a heckuva lot better game than we did!"

13) Fouls? Dayton DRAWS fouls, coach. They are NUMBER TWO in the country at doing it, coach. Your team has a tendency to send opponents to the line. Did you, knowing that Dayton shoots a lot of free throws, account for this in your gameplan? Maybe by driving more, getting in the low post more, and getting Dayton's players in foul trouble. Maybe by mixing up your defensive plan so as to not foul as much.

When Dayton was fouled, they shot FTs because they were attacking the basket. When Providence was fouled, many of them were common fouls because they were working the perimeter.

Even then, The fouls were 6-2 in your favor early in the second half. When it mattered. The final foul total was 21-14, and 8 of your fouls were called in the last two minutes, coach, when the game was mostly decided.

14) The final margin was THIRTEEN POINTS, coach. A "home-court" advantage is not thirteen points - it's three, or four, or maybe five. Thirteen means you got your ass whooped, coach.

I didn't go to Dayton, so I don't take it as personal. It really doesn't bother me because I know the truth. Let them think Dayton isn't as good as we know we are. It's also a testament to how overlooked DEFENSE is. The average fan simply doesn't "see" how our defense is 70% of our success equation. They also don't know that we have been getting to the free throw line all year way above the national average and they don't "see" it's our speed and quickness that is getting us there.

What they do "see" is an offensive show for the last two games that was bad at times (low shooting percentage, too many minutes without a bucket, missed 3's, etc) but good enough to win.

There have been some opponent fans that know we have been the better team, and have posted that. They understand "how" we are doing it. But most don't get the defensive factor or how we are getting to the free throw line -- and that includes a lot of the sports writers.

Thus they gravitate towards bad ref calls and home court advantage story lines. It is what it is. Let them continue to think we aren't as good as we all know we are. I hope every team still in the NCAAs thinks we aren't very good. Seriously, we really can't be. We were the last team selected. All it takes is an Eye Test to to "see" we aren't very good.

Knight is definitely the expert on how many chairs are required for a technical. That cost them ONE POINT TOTAL, I don't think it mattered much

Good Call.
Too bad the refs don't know the goal tending rule, just ask SMU.

But, but, but, it yet learned from eamonn Brennan's at ESPN that the technical killed whatever momentum providence had at that point. You know the kind of momentum they typically refer to when you just got tied up on the offensive end and the other team is going to get the ball out of a time out. Let's face it, critical thinking is not a requirement for most sports reporting

I refuse to waste my time reading posts from whining fans or biased reporting. The scoreboard doesn't lie. Instead of reading all the reports, I chose to watch the replay of the game for the second time late this morning. Henton is a gunner. He had as many shots as Pierre, Pollard, and Sibert combined.

#11 seed Xavier played 55 miles from campus last year -- a distance shorter than Dayton playing in Columbus.

Facts are stubborn things.

So moral of the story is if you don't out-play your opponent, it doesn't matter who has the home-court advantage.

So the storyline today should have been HOW Dayton PLAYED to beat Providence and a sub-storyline would have been they got to do it in front of a pro-UD crowd.

Also, see Syracuse game from last year.

I was in the mens room last night at halftime and bumped into Rudy while he was taking a break. He said that the Friars fans, the NCAA officials and the NBE brass were all giving him a hard time. So I told him to take off his "head" and rest a while. He did, and then he let me take his picture:
