i think its the amount of money that would be guaranteed if they signed him. not the actual roster spot. But as we've been discussing above...it seems their intention has been to sign him all along.

Basically the article is reporting old news.

Last year Roberts signed two-year contract, with the second year having a club option. The option being that the Pelicans could waive him before July 20th at a cost of $50K, which would have voided the 2nd year of the deal. After July 20th, the 2nd year of the contract worth $789K became guaranteed. By not waiving him, the Pelicans picked up the option year of his contract which is what the article is reporting. The article makes it seem like a more recent development than it actually was.

Thumbs up From the Pelican news release

Special mention of Roberts as a shooting weapon who is expected to benefit from another season in the NBA and bolster the Pelican hopes for a turnaround this season.

More definition on the Pelican roster

I don't have the IN subscription, however this is enough to make me think that Roberts is the defacto third string insurance policy (albeit a good one).

http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/nba/...espnapi_public

If that is the situation, Brian will embrace the role and do a great job. The Pelicans pretty much know what they have if Holiday or Evans gets hurt.

Edit: PG Pierre Jackson departed for France even though he shows up on the Pelican's roster.
