The last time UD was ranked in the AP poll was Week 4, December 2nd, of last year. They were 6-1 and had 90 points. They were not ranked in the coaches poll that week.
I don't know when the last time was that UD was ranked in the coaches poll.
It looks like they were last ranked in the coaches poll in Week 1 of the 2009-2010 season, when they were also ranked in the AP poll.

Yes, how could I forget!
But, the poll archive site appears to be screwed up, no sign of UD in the final AP poll from last year.

Tonight would be a good night to "take a break" so to speak, not much of concern for the Flyers:
Richmond (+6.5) @ GW could be an interesting game, and perhaps important for UD's seeding in the A10 tournament and GW's chances of making it as an at large.
Other games of interest:
Cincy (-1) @ Memphis. Cincy is getting votes as well, or at least was last week prior to the UConn loss, certainly they are on the bubble. Memphis is no where near the Bubble, got tigers.
Oregon St (+6.5) @ Washington. After knocking off both Arizona schools last week, OSU is attempting to work their way onto the Bubble, against a Washington team that has lost 3 straight and needs to turn things around quickly to get back on the bubble.
#8 Utah (-5.5) @ Arizona St. Only b/c its a ranked team on the road, not b/c ASU is good or anything.

I figured out why UD was not in the final AP poll from last year:
The final AP poll was done on March 17th, before the season was over, therefore that poll was done before UD's NCAA tournament run, therefore UD was not included in that final poll.
The final coaches poll was done on April 7th, that poll was done after the tournament, UD was tied with Baylor at #18 in that poll.

Last night
1/15/15
George Washington needed two overtimes to defeat visiting Richmond in the lone A-10 game last night:
Richmond 70 @ George Washington 73 (2OT)
There were no OOC opponents in action last night

This was a game neither team wanted to win. Richmond down 3 with 7s to go and Garino fouls Anthony as he turns and heaves a shot toward the basket. Anthony makes all 3. At the end of OT 1, the ref calls a foul on GW but ref goes to monitor and ends up calling off the foul due to time expired. Richmond down 2 with 45 s to go and Mooney calls to start fouling. GW made the fts and continued to do so.

There were over 50 seconds left when GW got the ball. GW was over 80% on FTs for the game, so Mooney's strategy was not sound.
But you are right that neither team seemed to want it. GW looked far from impressive.

Friday 1/16:
7 games tonight, really nothing of interest as it pertains to UD.
Saturday 1/17 (no lines yet, at least not on cbssports.com)
aTm @ LSU
VCU @ Duquesne
Fordham @ LaSalle
Rhody @ UMass
Miami @ Buffalo
GTECH @ Pitt
Ball St @ Bowling Green
Mason @ GW
#2 Virginia @ BC
Davidson @ Richmond
Bama St @ Bama a&m
Ole Miss @ #19 Arkansas
UConn @ Stanford
Other games:
#4 Duke @ #6 Louisville despite their recent struggles, should be a great one.
Tulsa (Bubble) @ South Florida (hope for the road upset)
NC State (bubble) @ Florida St
Ohio St @ Iowa (both are in the range of UD at the moment)
Miami @ #12 ND (after the big win @ Duke, I'd imagine Miami is all kinds of bubbly)
Green Bay @ Detroit, W-GB at large dreams probably died on the road the other day, if the Horizon wants to be a 2 bid league, they'll need GB to win out, then lose in their tournament, that may not be enough
#22 Baylor @ K-State
Syracuse (bubbly) @ Clemson (bad)
MSU @ #14 Maryland. Mich. St is around UD in many projections/rankings.
Butler @ Gtown Both teams are in the 8-11 seed range at the moment
#16 WVU @ #20 Texas (perhaps a chance for UD to jump the loser in the top 25)
#8 Utah @ #10 Arizona (just a potentially great game)
#25 Wyoming @ Fresno St. Wyoming already lost at home, so they're probably out of the top 25, still Wyoming is fun to watch; find myself rooting for Nance, whish Archie would have given him the scholly offer.
#24 Okie St @ #18 Okie Bedlam could give UD a chance to rise into the top 25
Temple @ Cincy (back end of the bubble for both teams at the moment)
Providence @ Creighton (go blue jays, go pick up that first Big East win this year)
BYU @ St Mary (two teams with stellar records playing late in the evening on the Duece)
Sunday 1/18:
BU @ Loyola MD
Saint Joes @ Saint Bonnies, winner gets a leg up on the top half of the A10 standings
Other games;
Indiana @ Illinois (both bubbly)
Boise St @ New Mexico
|
|
|
|
St Bonaventure

Larry Jr. is a senior. Wouldn't he have already signed his letter of intent before Archie became coach? (I can't imagine Archie wouldn't have given him a serious look considering his bloodlines and Larry Sr. on campus for every women's game.) (I think I'm counting the years correctly.)

If I recall correctly, Archie (or whomever the coach was) had him down to visit during the period when Gibson & Buckets (both seniors, or at least henton is, I think Gibson transferred) had either backed out or were not quite ready to hold to their commitment due to the parting of ways with Gregory. Nance's older sister was on the women's team, so he had already been to campus a bunch, as well as his father, however Archie didn't extend the offer (this was in the spring) and he ended up signing with Wyoming. Nance was definitely a bit under the radar, but my thinking at the time was, well they could use someone with size, but I king of understood the philosophy of not signing a guy just to sign a guy. Nance had a rather pedestrian freshman season at Wyoming, a very solid soph season (10 & 6) and has been averaging 15 & 7 the last 2 seasons. The few times I have watched, Wyoming passes the ball well as a team, kind of like the Flyers, so I think he would fit in great here (he's averaging 2.3 assists a game this season)
Hindsight is always 20/20 and perhaps I'm wrong, perhaps Archie did offer him after Gibson decommitted, perhaps Nance wanted to get away from Ohio, wanted to forge his own path rather than follow his sister's path to UD. At any rate, he would be an outstanding addition to this team. He compliment Pollard greatly, both are athletic as heck, Nance is a better shooter (near 80% from the line) Pollard has more brute force. Who wouldn't want a combination of those 2 to add to Pierre?

And now SMU has lost their second leading scorer, Keith Frazier, to poor grades.
Larry Brown is seeing a major depletion of talent. He might have to call Archie for some tips. Maybe it will be good news for Brown also.

Davidson will be hungry next week when we go there to play.
I thought that the Davidson and Richmond game today at Richmond might be close, but did not expect Richmond to put Davidson away 89 - 53, particularly after Davidson won two weeks ago 81 - 67, admittedly at Davidson. 57% shooting will do that.
We play them both next week so it will be a good week to see how our marvelous 7 stack up against a couple of the better A10 teams.

Texas just may have totally exposed WVU and Staten.
When two good Flyer opponents like Miss and A&M play each other, does it
make any difference in our RPI which of them wins??
Poor Creighton
And then there's tOSU. Somebody needs to tell them that if they want to get
revenge, it won't happen in the NIT.
Richmond by 26 over Davidson. wow.

I would guess its more beneficial to have the team we beat win the game but i don't think thats the case RPI wise.
When it all boils down to it, RPI is the be all end all. Except for 07-08

In this case, we definitely got the good end of it:
1) Mississipi moves up into top 50 RPI (along with Texas AM with the big road win vs LSU)
2) Arkansas stays top 50 RPI
3) Arkansas at #19 losing possibly opens up even more room in the top 25
I know we will be in the top 25 this week, the question is how high can we go? High enough to survive a close loss to Davidson on Tuesday?

Bowling Green is quietly putting together a pretty good season, and there is a 15-20% chance that they can move into the top-50 rpi by the end of the year. Also, Texas A&M has a chance to move into the top 50 if they can beat the teams they are supposed to beat and have a few upsets at home (Georgia and Florida).

The teams that recently went to the NBE were all used to winning. Now half of them lose every conference match-up. Losing a lot of games eventually catches up with a program. Respect for the program diminishes, recruiting eventually gets hurt, fans get restless, etc. I'm not yet sure who the big losers are going to be in the NBE yet, but there will be some.

BU loses to Loyola MD in ot 91-86.
BU hits a free throw to go up by 5 with 6 seconds left. They miss the second freebie. Loyola hits a three on the other end with 1 second left. A flagrant foul is called on BU at the same time. Loyola hits both freebies to tie it up. Loyola called for foul on inbounds pass with .2 seconds left. BU misses both freebies and game goes to ot. Loyola wins in ot. When you are a bad team you figure out how to lose games.

Thanks. And BTW, you had some decent but very young talent on your Bills squad that came to town yesterday. Give it another year, and you should be back in the top third of the conference again.

Monday 1/19:
Flyers opponents this season get the night off, but there are some games to keep an eye, depending on what happens around noon will tell just how meaningful they are for Flyers.
#20 Texas (-3) @ TCU (13-4, but few wins of note, @ Ole Miss, 300+ SOS)
#5 Nova (-4) @ G'town (I'd be OK w/ Nova sweeping thru the rest of the Big East)
#18 Okie (+5.5) @ #9 Kansas

had no trouble running their record to 11-10 at hapless Maine:
NJIT 65 @ Maine (1-17) 55
In a game somebody had to win, Coppin State kept Florida A&M winless:
Florida A&M (0-18) 75 @ Coppin State (2-16) 87
Central Arkansas - the nation's other winless team - stayed that way at Houston Baptist:

I've always liked the Missouri program and it started back when "Stormin Norman" was the coach. Since then they've been a roller coaster ride, although Mike Anderson did a decent job there and pulled the program out of some dark days but now they seem to keep trending down each season. I'm glad Texas A&M beat them and Bowling Green is having a nice season at 12-4 with a 4-1 conference record. I saw Holmes for BG posted a double-double so he's continuing to play well for the Falcons.

I'm pretty sure #25 Iowa got waxed this week as well. We may have picked the right week to lay an egg. Need a win Saturday.

Providence blew a 14 point lead against X and threw the ball away on three straight possessions to let X tie the game at end of regulation.
Providence endured as X lost in overtime 69-66.
Xavier and Creighton going south in BE while Butler is treading water. X and Butler have good rpi's.
Good news is UD lost on the road, Seton Hall lost at home rankede #24.

At RPI 169 at some point DePaul won't be a bad loss this season. Hopefully it's after they bring 6 NBE teams above 60 rpi.
The NIT could be filled with the 5th - 10th place NBE.

Yes, Creighton is that bad this year, but they nearly pulled off an upset against Butler at Hinkle last night. Interestingly, NBE's current first-place team, DEPAUL, is only favored in one more game this year--against Creighton at Rosemont.

Shows you that the BE really is overrated. Depaul didn't just become good in 2 weeks time. They were putrid in the OOC and now are beating BE teams left and right. Losing at home to DePaul is really going to hurt Seton Hall come selection Sunday. It'smone thing to lose to a 100+ team on the road, it's an entirely different thing to lose at home.

My eyes are still burning from watching DePaul shoot free throws tonight. Not just because they shot a dismal 40% from the charity stripe in the second half--but due to the 20 or so male Seton Hall fans wearing Speedo's under the DePaul basket. What the heck? That wasn't just wrong, it was a crime against humanity.

The Davidson men's swim team stripped down to Speedos and danced every time UD shot free throws in the 2nd half. It did not bother Jordan as he made 5-6. How would you know if it affects Kendall's free throw shooting. The Davidson swim team appeared to all be in good shape. If it was the women's team, might have affected my free throw shooting...
Guess a new trend is starting. This was the takeoff from the old Duke trick years ago.

IU plays at OSU this weekend. I expect OSU to win, giving them two victories for the week and a top 25 ranking...it's the law. BTW, no one misses more open layups than Northwestern did last night...wow.

Northwestern did all the right things at the end of that game, other than make the aforementioned open layups.

Shortly after that, a bunch of guy students took their shirts off in the other student section, which I was stuck behind. Many of those guys need a diet, but do have some great boobs.
By the way, Davidson has a student section right behind the visitor's bench. The noise they make has to get into the head of the team, and also makes it hard for the coaches to talk. Won't happen at UD, but great idea.

IMO, the difference between the BE and A10 is that, at least this year, everybody is at least decent in the BE. Even DePaul has a pretty decent team this year. There are no Fordhams.
You can't take a day off in that league...and road games are always a battle.
The top half or top third or so of the A10 is about the same as the BE.
The BE has 5-7 teams in contention for a bid this year...the A10 has 3-4.
From top to bottom, the BE may be the most competitive league in the country.

Competitive does not necessarily equate to good though. The fact that DePaul is tied for first in the Big East says a lot, IMO. DePaul was on a 6 games losing streak going into Big East play, with losses against the likes of Loyola Marymount and Ohio. You can throw a bunch of mediocre teams together in a conference and the games will be competitive. I watched some of the xavier-Providence game last night, and let's just say I was unimpressed. The only entertaining part of the game was watching Mack go berserk and act the JO that he is.
The Big East may get 5-7 bids, but if they do I think they'll get seriously exposed as mediocre.

Very true
Big East making great and fast progress. TV ratings are way up from last year. The conference is no 2 RPI and may get as many as 6 to 7 bids. Fox has the St Johns/Duke game with K going for 1k. That will be a huge boost for them.

Agree...did not mean to imply that they were the best league, just meant to say that it is a highly competitive league...Villanova is the only highly ranked team right now, but the league is on track for a good number of bids.

BE has the second highest conference RPI behind Big 12. I agree that parity does not always = excellence, but in this case, this season, all the BE teams are capable of knocking off someone better. The parity appears to be escalated a click or two. Where any one of them could get on a roll for the BE Tournament and win it.

I think they will get 4-6 bids. 4 if 5th place is 2 games below .500. 6 if a team with a losing conference record wins it.
They played the RPI game as well if not better than we did last year. They would have only had 3 bids last year had Providence not won the BE tournament.

Could care less about the nBE.
If you worry and not stay focused on your goals you lose sight on what you need to do here and now.
Stay on message and that is all UD can and should be doing right now.
As noted last year, we didn't get selected because of any other team or league's actions. It was what WE did.
It really is that simple.

VCU and SLU at the half are tied at the half, 34 all. SLU playing a bit of havoc of its own. Announcers gave UD credit for how UD played SLU when we won by 16.

Yes, but only 4 of the teams have RPIs below 30. St. John's, Seton Hall, and _avier are all huddled in the mid 30's, and they all have between 5 and 7 losses, with the high probability (based on RPI and remaining opponents) of all finishing with 11 or more losses after the BE Tourney is over. So, the BE could get as many as 6-7 in, or as few as 3-4. And that's why they play the games!

These games today are crazy with twists and turns--Arkansas, W. Virginia, and Marquette vs. Georgetown. And the ESPN scroll with Dayton on top of it.
Wiped off the smile; it is so STILL on this board before Richmond game.

George Mason up 3 with 12 seconds left shooting 2 foul shots. They miss both and Davidson hits a 3 with 1 second left to tie it up. And of course Davidson crushes George Mason in OT.
In fact, they were up 6 with 21 seconds to go and shooting a foul shot. George Madon misses 3 foul shots in a row and Davidson hits 2 3s in a row.

I'll wait for the official word from Glen C, but looks like a pretty good day for key Flyer opponents. Texas A&M with a big road win at Tennessee, Arkansas survives at Missouri, Ole Miss survives Florida...

UIC and Alabama A&M always lose, BU lost to Bucknell (usually the class of the Patriot League), and EMU and BGSU lost rivalry games, so I can kind of excuse them. #Glass_Half_Full

DePaul is much improved vs. last year...they had a real shot to win at Xavier...they shot extremely well in the first half, they had a double digit lead...they might have led by as many as 15...cooled off in the second half and couldn't hold on...need fewer turnovers and better defense...they are making progress though...I think DePaul brings OP back next year and doesn't fire him...I was impressed vs. how bad they looked last year.

They lost to a string of absolutely terrible teams in the out of conference schedule. That is what makes me enjoy their run in the NBE. I'm now pulling for Creighton to go on a run.
