Josh Cunningham - Potential Transfer Visiting Today

He has been discussed elsewhere but when you make an official visit, it deserves its own thread I think. It is being reported he is on campus today. Hope Archie can land him. He's good.

Good news is that he did not commit to Illinois and is making the visit here. The bad news is that he grew up in Illinois and probably has that same homer feeling as many Ohio kids to OSU.

Let's hope Archie & Morgan Park/Mac Irvin Fire Teammate... Mr. KD... can convince him to be Dyshawn's replacement after this year.

EDIT: By the way, Matt over at Flyerhoops was first to report it earlier this week so everyone else is slow lol

I believe Illinois also has Morgan Park players on their roster.

Josh would certainly be a nice addition. That extra year to learn the system is extremely valuable. This would make all of the squirming we did with Archie this spring seem like it never happened.

The fact that he is here is good. We land a nice percentage that see the place. How is the weather?

weather.. good drinking weather for the Ghetto tonight, perhaps some rain passing thru, spotty, but nothing serious, warm, since he's from Chicago, I can't imagine weather is much of a factor. Don't know what they do on their official visits, I'd assume, aside from basketball, hanging out with potential future teammates, perhaps talking about potential course work etc..

If nothing else, at least his former Morgan Park teammate at UD can tell him what the 2nd weekend of the NCAA tournament feels like. His Illinois teammates can't even tell him what the 2nd round of the NIT feels like

7.5 rebounds and 8 points a game.
And not a muscular dude at 216 pounds.

Great day for a visit about 82 with a little cloud cover. Even better if it's his last one scheduled. Always like the last one. We're talking young impressionable kids so if the feel for the package is right he could commit. C'mon Archie, show him the (har)mony..

Josh looks like a great fit for him and Dayton

I don't see a problem with the fact that he doesn't fit solidly at one position. That's just a speed bump in today's game. He obviously has a sixth sense for rebounding. That, and his build (check out the gun in the picture), remind me a bit of a novice DMO. CJ also had that kind of build. We basically play with 1's and wings. His assets and stats make him for all the world a Miller recruit to develop.

This is a guy who was Rivals Top 100 player who turned down some quality Power 5 offers (Indiana amongst others if memory serves me correctly) because then Bradley coach Geno Ford had hired an assistant that we well connected to his AAU or High School program and that's how he ended up there

This is College Basketball Talk's little write up on him committing to Bradley

Bradley scored a major recruit on Tuesday afternoon, as Morgan Park High (Ill.) forward Josh Cunningham announced his commitment to the Braves.

Cunningham is a four-star prospect, listed as the No. 88 overall player in the Class of

2014, according to Rivals. The 6-foot-7 forward picked Bradley over offers from multiple high-major programs such as Creighton, DePaul, Indiana, Iowa State, Minnesota, Missouir, Nebraska, Northwestern, Oklahoma, South Carolina and St. John’s.

He only got 4 years at Bradley...Kent State, his previous job, sued him after he left KSU, there were some hard feelings there, breach of contract or something like that...great player at OU.

New coach at Bradley got into some conflict a few years ago at UWGB over the way he treated his players.

Blurb from the Chicago Tribune:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports...519-story.html

Cunningham hopes to pick soon: While the coaching staffs — and fan bases — eagerly await Morgan Park point guard Marcus LoVett's college choice, former Morgan Park star Josh Cunningham is quietly approaching a decision of his own.

A hot commodity on the transfer market after averaging 7.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as a true freshman at Bradley last winter, the 6-foot-7 Cunningham would like to choose his destination in time to enroll in summer school in June.

He visited Dayton on Thursday followed by Illinois on Saturday, according to Morgan Park coach Nick Irvin, and has also been to DePaul. Colorado State, Mississippi State and possibly Nevada are also in the mix, Irvin said.

Former Morgan Park teammate Kyle Davis and former Simeon rival Kendall Pollard have enjoyed success at Dayton, but they would only have one season left at Dayton after Cunningham sits out a transfer year next winter.

He has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

I will never understand why this does not happen more often. How can coaches, AD's, and presidents with years left on contracts just be allowed to jump from school to school without significant ramifications?

When hiring a new coach or extending an existing coach, why not include language prohibiting them from leaving or make the buyout so large it brings millions back into your program?

Friday should tell the tale. I see they mixed up the days on the Illinois and Dayton visits, Almost got it right, which is good enough given the state of reporting these days. Close is good enough.

Yeah, they messed that part up, but good info about what schools are in play and the timeframe for a decision. I like Dayton's chances.

Okay, so not DePaul, one of the three he visited. Makes me think it's really down to Dayton and Illinois.

I worry about Mississippi St. Howland is a proven winner, very good recruiter, and a good coach. He was not fired at UCLA because he wasn't winning. He made 3 Final Four's and won the PAC 12 his last year there. With the race for 2nd in the SEC wide open, he could definitely make a strong play for Cunningham and other very good recruits.

Because the other guy negotiates too. If you want a good coach, one won't accept that deal. They'll go to another school with a better offer.

Marcus Lovett signed with St. John's today. He was the kid Illinois wanted for their last scholly, which unfortunately now leaves that spot open for Cunningham.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but on Rivals he was quoted as saying his visit was, "Pretty good," and that he still wants to checkout Miss State and Colorado State. That means to me that there wasn't anything that was so great to make him say forget the rest, I'm going to Dayton. He also didn't get the opportunity to run with the guys.

Then again, he obviously regretted his decision last time so maybe he's just weighing all options to make the most educated decision.

Archie wouldn't bring him in unless he was sure Josh could help make the team better. A year working with Archie and the staff would definitely make him a bette player than he is now.

But, Josh would need to be a very confident player to come here with the talented players we have coming in.

Josh was a 4-star rated guy on a couple of different site, top 100 with a lot of solid offers. I'm not sure how or why he ended up at Bradley, but for whatever the rating services are worth, he's a talented kid, rated much higher than any of the incoming recruits.

There would be competition for playing time. If you assume everyone scheduled to be on the roster remains thru the next 2 seasons, and add Josh into the mix, you'd have:

Big Steve (7 footish) and Miler (6'9) in the traditional center role

You'd have Pollard (6'6") somewhere b/w a 4 & a 5.

You'd have Williams (6'8") at the 3-4.

Add in Cooke, Davis, and the 2 other frosh to be, and you'd have 3 more players b/w 6'4" and 6'7" for the 2-3 position, not to mention Kyle Davis getting minutes somewhere.

Assuming his role would be somewhere in the 3-4 spot, there would be a mess of people that would fit in or around that role. Its easy to see him getting minutes, how much would be determined by both his talent and how much work he puts in relative to the other players fighting for time at similar spots.

With the pace of the game quickening due to the 30 second shot clock, I think a deep quality bench will offer lots of playing time for everyone. Much more like the 13 -14 Flyer team than 14 - 15 team. Five seconds doesn't sound like a lot of time removed from the shot clock but I think the pace of play will appear significantly faster. There will be plenty of minutes for everyone.

You're looking at it all wrong. The key is the guy who is probably under 6 feet, at the head coach position. He's looking at a roster full of multi-positional weapons. He might say Scoochie is my PG, and Big Steve is my traditional center when he's in there, but other than that - he's just got a lot of different combinations of versatile guys he can play. Some are established stars of course (Pierre and Pollard) while others are less proven, but together they give him a lot more options that he had to work with last year. And that's a really good thing.

With few exceptions, Ones and Wings.

It's in Archies DNA.

A whole covey of our targeted recruits are + or - an inch from 6'7". Pointless to try to slot them in traditional roles.

won't get an argument from me; I was just stating the obvious on what kind of competition he'll have for playing time. He wouldn't be walking into a ready made role, given that he'd be one of 5 sophomore eligible players in the 6'8" and above range. As you mentioned, Archie won't pigion hole any of them into a specific role, so its not like he's just fighting for minutes at the 4 spot with Kendal, he's fighting for minutes with everyone.

I agree 100%, and have maintained for the last couple of years that the 1-5 position numbers are pretty irrelevant for UD and many schools. They have a ball handler to get the ball past half court and four other guys who can dribble, pass, rebound and shoot. It is very hard for all of us to get out of our paradigm and think this way, but I am glad Archie has.

To beat out a Big 10 team for this prospect would be a great feather in AM's and our caps and the program going forward. It would show other recruits in the Midwest area that UD continues to be the place to be.

Yes they are B10 but, haven't we beaten them when we last played Illini and haven't we performed better since then in the NCAA?

Just sayin

If Josh wants to goto the NCAA tourney and have success he'll come to UD. If not he can go to IL.

Seriously? Shortly after the conference formed? 1899 to be precise. Iowa has been in the Big10 for a very long time.

Cunningham in his videos looks like a thinner and slightly quicker Pollard with a semi decent foul shooting form. They are the same height.

Bradley transfer Josh Cunningham will not take any more visits and will likely select either Illinois or Dayton, source told @CBSSports.

This will be interesting. My gut tells me he will pick Illinois. He could have gone power conference out of HS and chose a different route. He may have regretted that and this gives him the chance to reverse. The BIG is a draw. That said, Archie has pulled the rabbit out of the hat before. It is fun when these are nice to have, not need to have.

PinehurstFlyer will become famous soon enough
This may, unfortunately, be a perfect example of how Dayton's Conference affiliation hurts recruiting. I believe both schools can make a case for their programs and their schools. I think UD may currently have the edge in a few ways. But how will Josh respond when the other recruiter points out the weekly games (Fordham, LaSalle, Duquense, etc vs. ANY team in the Big Ten)...
Our guys do have some good responses - but none that can completely erase the Conference deficit. So let's hope Josh wants to help his team win a Championship above all else. Then we have a shot.

The conference is a white chip compared to the blue chip B1G in recruiting wars. But that college life is not for every great recruit. Archie can get this kid if he really wants him, imo. The time lapse definitely favors us in a two-team race.

Bottom line is post season NCAA bids and advancing far. Dayton can stack up well with the Illini where it counts the most. When was the last time the B10 beat us, or the ACC etc.

You can play with the Big boys and watch Dayton in the NCAA tourney or play for them and enjoy the ride.

If we were in the BE, it would help, but we will not know what is the deciding factor for Josh. It could be playing time, or how much he likes the coach or teammates, or facilities or closeness to home, etc, etc.

The reasons for not choosing a power conference originally are still a major factor. We don't know if he liked the size of Bradley once there and it was just not a program/coaching fit. And we don't know if he got there and didn't like being a big fish in a small pond.

I guess we will find out shortly.

I guess we will find out shortly.
Chin Coleman was the reason he chose Bradley.

Based upon recent comments, Archie must really like this guy. After sitting out a year, Cunningham has three years of eligibility which means he is essentially a member of the 2015-16 freshman class. So Archie has loaded up even more on that year and thrown someone else in the mix for the playing time with the true freshman class.

Agreed, but this kid was rated a higher recruit than anyone we have coming in, he has proved he can play D1 as a freshman, and he will have a year of maturity on most of these guys.

Your point though is well taken, if we do not get Cunningham, it is maybe for the best.

It's not for the best if Cunningham leaves college better than anyone we have coming in.

We would never know, because we would not have seen what he would have done at Dayton or to the team chemistry, or to cause someone to transfer. As Coach Kuwik said, "What “Buckets” did at Providence, he might not have done at Dayton or what Percy did or didn’t do at Iowa State, he might have done or not done at Dayton—you never know."

If you are taking a power conference or a Big 10, you would make the choice, selection and announcement right away, Why wait? Absent that, I think he is coming to UD.

I was not suggesting that we may better off without him. Archie has weighed all that and has offered him. Based upon that, I think he would be a good get.

From Sports Director of Peoria ESPN affiliate radio station.

@hoijim The guy who first told me Josh Cunningham was coming to Bradley last year is now telling me Cunningham to Illinois.

It's been my experience in business that when you are in tight competition with another bidder, if you are the winner someone leaks it to you ahead of time. If you are destined to be the loser you finally hear it from the janitor or equivalent first.

At any rate we should know soon.

Groce is not in a good spot right now. In spite of impressive recruiting he failed to dance or win games in the tournament.

Believe me, he needs this fellow a lot more than Archie does.

I wonder if UD & Illinois plan to meet up in Indy again this year for a "not so" secret scrimmage.

True. But he wants to be developed for the next level. The question in his mind is, who can help me the most. Hence the delay, imo.

If Groce doesn't win this year, he may be out of a job, and Cunningham can't help this year.

Josh should take this into consideration in making his decision. Is the coach I'm committing to going to be there for me when it's my time to take the court?

No he can't. Groce could very well be fired by next year. Archie won't be fired, and isn't going anywhere for some time.

Advantage: DAYTON

Seems like a high expectation job for a school that has never won a national title...ran Bruce Weber out of town, IMO he did a good job there...Groce heading into year 4, NCAA, NIT, NIT...sure seems like he should get a 5th year.

In the Big 10 you have to be either a football or a basketball school. Illinois is NOT a football school.
