5th in "others receiving votes", so 30th overall, in USA Coaches (or more accurately, the College Sports Information Directors) Preseason Poll...

Two observations. St. Mary's is most likely coming here ranked! How on Earth do these people decide that UCLA should be ranked when they had a losing record? Is there a secret that I'm not filled in on? From what I gather, UCLA is not the UCLA of old.

UCLA returns almost everyone and adds 3 Top-25 recruits. They should be a Top-25 team.

Jon Rothstein has a new post about his 20 under the radar breakout players for 2016. I went into the article curious, but not expecting, to see if any Flyers were listed. Near the bottom of the list he had Sam Miller. Sam would definitely qualify as a national under the radar player but I am not sure many UD fans are that high on him to become a breakout player. This is not intended to be a jab at Sam and I will happily be wrong but my perception, and that of others from this board, is that he has room to grow.

Although I like Crosby a bunch, I would go with Miller as the most talented guy from the Frosh class. If Pollard struggles, he will get a chance to shine.

27th in AP Preseason Poll:
http://collegebasketball.ap.org/poll/2017/1

other teams on UD's schedule:
St. Mary's: 17th
URI: 23rd
UCLA (maybe): 16th
Vanderbilt: 1 vote

Assuming St. Marys wins their first two games against Nevada and Prairie View, they will certainly be ranked when they come to UD Arena. This will be the first non-conference ranked opponent at UD since Alabama (16th) in December of 2011. Before that, the last ranked non-conference opponent was Pitt in Dec. 2007.

If UD starts out 3-0, then they will be ranked. If they start out 2-0, the next poll will not come out until after the SMC game.

Friday Nov 11 Austin Peay

Tuesday Nov 15 at Alabama

Saturday Nov 19 SMC

If they start out at 3-0, there is a pretty good chance they will start out 2-0.

I am very surprised we are not ranked in both major preseason polls. It is actually quite shocking. The worst part is that UD/SMC will not be a ranked match up as it should be.

Dayton #22 in ESPN Power Rankings.

St. Mary's #19 and UCLA #24 (Flyers need to beat Nebraska which we cannot overlook).

I don't think there is anyway we overlook Nebraska (Archie won't allow it) BUT they will be very below average this year... We should Destroy them though lol

good pub, and I'm sure Archie will use it as best he can as a recruiting tool, but there are many things wrong with that list.

A), no OSU football or UK basketball. Sure both fan bases are obnoxious as all get out (and I consider myself an OSU football fan) but there is no question they turn out in serious numbers across the country.

b) UD "despite being a mid major" Just stop it w/ that nonsense NCAA.

Otherwise, I'd pump the hell out of that every time a recruit comes to town.

Gazoo,

I've attended several Buckeye vs. Northwestern games in Evanston and the Buckeye fans greatly outnumber the Wildkitties. I wouldn't call that a big game. Prior to Big10 Expansion.

If 100 Buckeye fans show up and 20 NW fans show up, that's outnumbering them 5:1 but not a great showing overall.

I should have noted that the "prevailing wisdom" is that tOSU only shows up to big games. I don't show up to any so I wouldn't know.

Lunardi's preseason bracketology:

#7 seed in Buffalo

Obviously projecting teams at specific locations is a complete guess, but our last trip to Buffalo for the tournament seemed to work out OK.

Those almost certainly are not fans that traveled, though. I think it's more a function of the game being held in a large metropolitan area with a decent amount of OSU grads.

#7 seed in Buffalo

Obviously projecting teams at specific locations is a complete guess, but our last trip to Buffalo for the tournament seemed to work out OK.

Folks, have you noticed that Davidson is playing a very difficult non-conferece schedule? IMHO, based upon this schedule, Davidson's record during this very difficult schedule will not be indicative of how good they will be. They are playing Clemson, Xavier / Missouri, TBD in Orlando, Charlotte, College of Charleston, North Carolina and Kansas. Wow! If Dayton had a schedule like this, we would all be buzzing with excitement.

I wouldn't want to play that schedule unless most of those are at home or neutral. It doesn't help to go on the road and get beat.

I'll give you the UNC & Kansas games, though I assume both are on the road. Clemson is kind of meh, a shade above UD's opening matchup in their tournament, Nebraska, but certainly no better than Vandy. UCLA as a potential 2nd round matchup has more national name appeal than Xavier, though Xavier is currently the better team and would mean more to UD than UCLA does, missouri has been dreadful the last 2 seasons. Don't know what lies on the other side of whatever exempt even they are playing in. Charlotte has pretty much sucked since leaving the A10, hell they sucked prior to leaving the A10. College of Charleston is another meh program.

Again, I'll give you Kansas (in KC) & @ UNC, but combine that with one less OOC game (so you can throw UD's DII game out the window in essence if you are comparing schedules) @ Mercer, @ Charelston, Charlotte, App State and Jacksonville at home and I'll take UD's overall schedule over Davidson. They've given themselves a shot to land some haymakers if Jack Gibbs gets hot on the road somewhere, but there is little else left to build a resume off of.

Dayton over UCLA on a neutral court is far from an upset. That word has lost all meaning. Also putting a theoretical game on that list is silly to begin with.

Charles Cooke among the best non P5 players (I guess it excludes the Big East as well)

Dayton as a team also falls into that catagory, not that either really come as a surprise, lets see if they can live up to the billing.

I think we get better than a 7 seed.

http://www.vegasinsider.com/college-.../story/1813580:

Top 40 rankings.

31-DAYTON...Archie Miller continues to resist overtures from elsewhere and remains at Dayton, one of the truly good mid-major jobs in the country. The Flyers should get back to the Dance once more with an experienced core of seniors Gs Kyle Davis and Scoochie Smith, wing Charles Cooke, and frontline warrior Kendall Pollard. The Flyers resemble the handful of senior-laden teams that made an impact into the Dance a year ago.
