I hope this game does not come down to the wire. If it does, it would be because of all the missed point blank shots this half.

DMO had a great half of basketball, but even he missed a few bunnies. The rest of the team was generally underwhelming. It almost seemed like the team did not come out to play. Mental lapses all over the court.I hope they come out to play the second half and put this game away.

There is nothing good to say about anybody in this game. Every player is stinking it up. Our offense is zero, defense is poor and rebounding the worst this year.

This team was not ready to play tonight. They had no answer for the shooters. This team reminds me of Rhode Island who burns us each year from the three-point range.

Here's the downside of playing so many non-conference games at home each year. Losing to Weber State on the road or at a neutral site has much less of an impact than this does. One more of these at home and we're done dreaming of an at large. As it is, we need to be perfect at home and respectable on the road before A10 play starts.

makes me lose confidence in archie...i thought we were over losing these games at home. why was gavs in, no scott at all? also derenbecker must not be doing anything in practice to not see any time tonight. we struggled offensively at times, he doesnt get a chance to shoot some shots, maybe give the team a spark?

hmmm...that's gonna leave a mark.
I've seen better games in the park, by one team anyway. On the other hand the Webes looked pretty solid, well-coached.

Two awful possessions after timeouts that cost us the game to a team with an abysmal record that traveled acoss country to play at our place. Oh well. That's what you get when you hire a coach with a vacuous resume when plenty of coaches with experience were available. The U is run by amateurs. Bloody amateurs. What's worse is that I expect more from a school that is top 30 in attendance every year while many of my fellow alums couldn't care less because they can bask in the glory of watching NIT clips that are now available on Youtube.

Without the defense or rebounding. How we got outrebounded by 5 by this team is beyond me. That is effort, plain and simple. On top of it, they shoot 46% from the field and 47% from 3-pt.
Pathetic effort by our Flyers. Pathetic.

Our competitive advantage tonight indeed could have been a quick team getting up and down the court, perhaps even pressing some. We played right into their hands. I will make my chronic comment of moving Devon Oliver down to the 4 slot and play a quicker team. I don't recall a single fast break basket tonight.

Maybe we are playing our season backwards? Not great to start, but killer come A-10 time.
Kidding aside, this was not a great way to play. Let's hope that we get better very quick or the NIT is in trouble.

No, we wouldn't. And, we would've lost tonight by 20...at least.

I agree SHOCKEY, year after year the same old story, different players, same story, different coach, same story. We are stuck as a middle of the pack A-10 team and a 3 to 5 seed in the NIT. We are not bad, just nowhere near as good as we think we are. Some of that falls on the fans building up the program into something it is not. We wish we were a player on the national scene, but except for the occasional big win we are a fringe team. It may change with AM but I'm not holding my breath.

Yes, this is what the Selection Committee calls a BAD LOSS.
Might as well relax and just wait to see if Archie can get these guys interested in playing during the conference tournament.

Crippling, but not season ending. We'll have enough shots in conference to make a mark. The bigger issue is that this game shows that our team plays as young as they are. Read: inconsistent. We'll probably beat some teams and look great doing it. We'll probably have a couple more like this, unfortunately. Honestly, we all expected a game like this at some point this season. None of us wants to see it, of course. The question is whether this is a one-time thing or if we have several more. Unfortunately, the way we lost makes me think we'll have more than just one of these. It wasn't just bad shooting (it was that too), but bad decisions... that probably won't be outgrown overnight or go away due to the law of averages.

best defensive effort by an opponent at UD in a long time. KD and Vee couldn't beat Richardson or Bamforth off the dribble and they defended the high ball screens. Add in the fact the Flyers couldn't finish through contact.
The better team won. BTW, it was KD that screwed up on D that left Bamforth wide open. KD thought Bamforth was going to go through to the other side, he saw Dillard was looking and doubled back to the corner and was wide open.

Weber will be near the top of their conference at the end of the year. Reminded me of the 2nd half of Colorado. Flyers learned a hard lesson about toughness and execution.

Indeed, right up there in the mix with perennial powerhouses Montana, Portland State, and Eastern Washington.

Days like this I feel like just putting all of my energy towards the women's team. We can recover from this loss, but my main concern is that we really haven't played well all season. I'm starting to wonder if it's just because we aren't very good.

Did the sky just fall? Love coming out here after a loss like this and reading these posts in vacuum.

You may be on to something. all the hype that builds over the summer and fall seems to be a bit overblown. One bad loss doesn't doom the season but as you stated, we haven't had a good game yet. Maybe what we see is what we get.

As I always say, things are never as good as they seem after a win, nor as bad as they seem after a loss. But we haven't played well this season. We beat BC and Auburn, but those are two bad teams. Auburn is the same team that lost to A-10 bottom dweller Rhode Island AT Auburn. These first six games don't make me feel very good about this season.

Good teams (and coaches) always seem to have a hole card they haven't shown. That go-to play in a two minute drill. This was the stage to use it and it's a bit disappointing that we did not have one. Only caught the end, but 60 seconds of good basketball was all we needed to endure a lot of lessons but still get a win.
It's a painful process but one we have to get through. It's going to take all of ooc to get our act together for a decent A10 run.

Late in the game, with Benson going to the foul line after being fouled in the lane and 15 points on the night, the lady behind me says, "That #2 is pushing the ball too much. He's not a good player." I had to keep my composure...

Weber forced the Flyers 3-4-5 positions to make plays and they weren't up to the task. Whenever they were able to get good ball reversal and penetrate from the weak side they generally were not able to finish. I remember at least 7-8 open layups they missed in the game.

It is going to be an up and down year. Enjoy the process and see if they improve and mesh. Don't sweat the bumps because this years team was never going to contend for an at large berth.
Based on play to date, seeing the inside game against stiffer competition, lowering expectations to 14 to 17 wins. That can change as they mature as a team, but right now don't see the shooters on the court or the inside game offensively or defensively. One of the frosh bigs is going to have to be able to score inside and defend inside, but don't see it yet against decent D1 bodies.

Two plays that bugged me the most were actually on the defensive end.
Gav played defense with his arms basically over the head of the guy he was guarding - you knew a foul was coming 3 seconds before it happened. He stood there in the "I'm going to foul you - just lean into me" position.
Dillard was guarding a player at the arc. There was an entry pass. Dillard took one step toward the post player, but didn't double team. His own man took about 4 steps to the left and Dillard slowly walked toward him. The return pass was for basically a wide open 3. Dillard tried to close on him, but he was way too late. Again, you could see it 2 seconds before it happened. "Dillard! Your man is wide open for a three!"

That was never the expectation perhaps, but Dayton almost always plays to the bubble, regardless of expectations. We play down to it or up to it depending on the early expectations. Down the stretch (say the last 3 weeks of the season) , it's rare that we're already out of it - it's likewise rare that we're a lock.

Re the missed open shots, I saw the same things from my seat in the 200s. Shots were catching every part of the rim, and then falling off. Not to say we played well or deserved to win tonight - we did not. But I heard someone after the game talking about how we didn't "finish through contact" with any regularity. If we would have only done it one more time, this board would be littered with comments like "Whew - that was close!" instead of "^%$#@ - we suck!".
One other comment came on the post-game show. Brooks was asked what it meant when Arch said the team needed more toughness. He replied by describing the drills OP would put them through after a loss like this, and said that he wouldn't want to be on the current team for practice on Thursday. Count me in for that sentiment, too.
