Saint Louis Game Thread
I wanted to get his game thread up and running early... Could be our toughest game all year. I love that our first conference game is at home on ESPN2 at 11:00 am... Can anything beat this?!
Let's get off to a great start and show that we are one of the conference's elite teams.
Projected Starting Lineup:
G Mike McCall Jr. 6'0" 180 SR Chicago, IL
G Jordair Jett 6'1" 215 SR St. Paul, MN
F Jake Barnett 6'5" 205 SR Wauwatosa, WI
F Dwayne Evans 6'6" 230 SR Bolingbrook, IL
C Rob Loe 6'11" 245 SR Auckland, New Zealand
Go Flyers! Come on Archie, take it to Crews!

Well at least the Billikens don't have any Seniors in the starting lineup.
Huge game! A big chance to set the tone for league play right off the bat on national TV...

Or lack thereof...Rivalry? Not as far as they're concerned. Very few mentions of UD, and those are short quotes of confidence.

A rivalry is a game that you talk about while there's still a game to play and you have to be reminded that you can't look past so and so.
Maybe the StL players think of US as a rival? Perhaps evidenced by the performance vs Rhody.
Contain Jett, handle everyone else...hit free throws...and we send the Bills home disappointed.
Let's Go Flyers!

There is generally some good hatered that comes up game week from SLU towards UD. I think they had a "blue out" when UD visited a few years ago. Problem is, at least from our side, and I'll assume from theirs, its not a rivalry like the UD-X game, there just isn't enough history b/w the two schools, nor the close fan base, nor the regular dominance at the top of the same conference that generate a good amount of buzz amongst fans.

We don't have any "rivals", unfortunately. Guess we need to get up for every game and pretend. I think UD wins big vs St L, we have too many players for them to handle. Sure hope this rival thing changes in the near future, those games are special. We were talking about this the other day, remember: X, ND, DePaul, Memphis....the Arena rocked.

I have not considered Saint Louis to be a rivalry game. But I think that things could heat up considerably over the next few years. Some rivalries are bound to be born from the new balance of power in the A10. I expect that the crowd will be pumped for the game Saturday. This game will have big A10 ramifications.

SLU Not a Rival?
No wonder UD has such a hard time performing well in the A-10. The defending A-10 champion is not UD's rival? I believe the A-10 tournament seed and an NCAA bid will go through SLU this year and UD cannot afford to lose this game on Blackburn court. IMHO this game replaces the "X" game as THE home game. No disrespect to UMASS is intended but SLU has credentials and UMASS has potential. It remains to be seen how well UMASS handles the pressure of being the hunted. SLU has handled it quite well in the past year or two.

Call it what you want but at the end of the game one of us will be in first place in the A10 and the other will be a game behind.

I think you spoke too soon. Things are starting to heat up on their board. You might want to check it out again. There is certainly some animosity from the Biliken fans. It would seem face chucker Crews is their hero now.

Oh Please....Duquesne.....The Dukes haven't sniffed the NCAA tournament in almost 40 years now. Nothing about Duquesne gets me excited for big rivalry game. Until their program is relevant I don't think you can have any kind of rivalry with them.
St. Louis, on the other hand, is the natural rival. We have some history (25-24 all time, I believe). They are defending A-10 champs and the only team in our league from a "Midwest" state.
Let the games begin boys. Here is hoping some students make it back for this game, because we need the Arena rocking Saturday for national TV.
IN YOUR FACE St. Louis!!

The matchup on the wing between Sibert/Pierre and Evans should be great. I almost hope D-MO guards him, b/c they are both stat-stuffers. STL is a bit soft in the post, which is good for UD. Dayton has trouble stopping dribble-drive and Jett and McCall are both really quick, which is bad for UD. I like Dayton's ability to move the ball and make plays vs the STL defense.

I'm almost certain DMO will guard him. Evans is not a wing player (has only taken 9 threes on the season, made 1). He's basically a 6-5 power forward who plays like he is 6-9. Good on the glass (second on the team in rebounding at 6 a game) and it's basically over if he catches the ball near the basket. He will finish or get fouled (almost 8 FT attempts per game). Sibert especially would be a gigantic mismatch if we put him on Evans.

Why in the world would Sibert guard Evans? Then what, would you put Oliver on Jett?
Devin is a physical stud and he takes Evans along with Pollard.

No excuses today
11 a.m. start
Fans were not awake
Student body still off campus
Refs called it too close
We can't hit FTs
AM got out coached
If we are going to compete for upper level of A-10 we MUST win today.

Not only will this game have big A-10 ramifications but also potentially big NBE ramifications. For those who want us added to the NBE this is a team we need to beat since it may come down to us vs them for a NBE spot. Bottom line is that there are more than enough reasons why this is an important game. It would be a shame to lose this one (on national TV, no less) after doing enough outside the conference to be in position for an NCAA bid. Students or no students, our 6th man better be ready to go a full 40 or more. Let's get this one!

Scoochie has to protect the basketball a lot better if he is going to be a premiere point guard. He is way too lackadaisical with the ball.

Very disappointed in the team, thought we'd be able to handle these guys. Playing tentative under the basket. Playing hard to get to the basket then tentative shots that won't go in.
Plenty of time left in the game but they got to take it to them and finish.

Our ball movement is slow and predictable. We have got to swing it faster and get some better shots.
Price also looks to be hurting. He is slower than normal and sitting a lot.

Are we supposed to be a top A10 team? Ball handling is atrocious. Missed at least 4 layups. How many foul shots? Sloppy. Hope this time out wakes them up.

Kind of glad to be leaving for kid activities right now. Hope this is a happier thread when I review it after watching the rest of the game on DVR later. Right now, though, not looking like an NCAA Tournament team.

Archie needs to light a fire under their butts at half time. This is why fans seem to fall asleep at the games.

We just need to start making some shots. Right now theirs prayers are being answered and our bunnies are hopping away from the basket. But ball movement has to improve, there is no excuse for it.

Pretty much a complete butt kicking by Saint Louis in the first half. Hope we can regroup.

34 - 25 SLU at the half. Hope this will be a tale of two different halves. Our shooting percentage has got to improve 31% to 52% for SLU.

As bad as we played... I'll take down 9 at the half... We started to play better in the last 4-5 minutes

One team came ready to play. One team is still basking in its last minute OT victory.
Its A-10 conference time and the real Dayton Flyers show up.

Who the f*ck says I like it?? I'm stuck at work and appreciate Avid's honest assessment of the first half and you think I like it.

Unfortunately its an A10 half that we've all seen time and again.
Nothing I like more than to eat my words...even have a special recipe for crow.
If we cut the lead by 10 min mark I'll turn on the stove.
If we tie the game with 5 to go I'll start boiling the water.
If we win it, I'll start cooking....

I agree, I would love to see them turn it around.
They are probably a little rusty for having a week off... I fully expect a run in the 2nd half

Great kick out for a 3 by Sibert. One of the few kick outs we have managed. We have got to stop throwing up 5 foot crap and do more kickouts.

Archie: You need to sit Vee down and get Kyle in there and go up-tempo. We are giving them too much time to set up their defense.
