So what do we do/change???
We've been playing for three months / 22 games and what we are doing clearly isn't working and rather than improving we may be regressing. We've lost 12 games, and if you exclude the creampuffs , we've won only 7 ( and one of the puffs, Penn beat us --at home no less!) and Ball State, Akron, Ohio, and Richmond are not quite top notch victories. We've lost four of our last five!
Only an idiot would just stay the course. So what should be done?
We seem to really struggle in the half court offense. We could play more up tempo, it seems that we play better when we run. I'd also play Kostas more. He can be a difference maker as a shot blocker/alterer. We have to change something?

Kostas needs to figure out how to stop fouling. He has 6 fouls in his last 19 minutes.
My answer? Stay the course. Call me an idiot, that's fine. We have 9 players we can play. 5 of them (Landers, Kostas, Crutcher, J Davis, Svoboda) are essentially first year players. I know Landers is a sophomore, but this is is first year of actual playing time.
The best thing about first year players is that they become second year players. They will get better. I think, given the circumstances, throwing them into the fire and letting them make mistakes will improve their long-term development.
The other 4 guys? X and Crosby are not reliable enough to make up for the mistakes. D Davis and Cunningham can't do it on their own.
I still trust AG. This year sucks. There will be better years.

For this season, I only see 3 positive things we can do (and by “we”, I mean the players and coaches), none of which are contingent on either of the other 2:
1) Play the guys who bust their arses and give a sh!+;
2) Play the guys who contribute to a positive “+/-“ when they’re on the court; and
3) Hope for the best.
At this point, what else can we do? Petition the NCAA for an extra year of eligibility for Kendall Pollard? Play the guys who DON’T give a rat’s arse? Offer Archie $5MM to come back? Something similarly ridiculous?
No, for 2017-18, we’re limited to the 3 things above. Anything else is wishful thinking.

Yes, if there's one thing that won't confuse an already struggling group of players, it is a wholesale offensive philosophy change.

Exactly. The biggest single thing to help salvage some good from this season would be having Josh, Trey, Jordan, Kostas and Jalen come back next year dedicated to individual and team defense having been built on a foundation from this season.

As Sam Miller put up some practice shots at his house on Tuesday evening, the Gonzaga forward’s mind began to wander to a familiar place — his recruitment.
Offers from Dayton, Gonzaga University, Penn State and Providence, among others, floated as possible destinations for the versatile 6-foot-8 forward, but the more Miller shot, the more he envisioned himself in a Dayton Flyers uniform.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...=.49fdbf376dfd
Then Maryland came calling in August, offering Crosby a scholarship to be part of the 2014 class.

1. get some guys buying into defense
2. play Kostas and Svoboda MORE
3. not sure about X - if hurt, don' play him much... or at all
4. Crosby - you're guess as good as mine. Play D. Don't jump in the air on offense
5. TRAP?

OK, so Archie's recruiting may not have been that bad. The guys that we got in the Class of 2018 had some decent interest from some P5 schools. But then, they got on campus, and didn't improve themselves much, if at all. Might that not, then, contradict the perception of Archie as a guy who was great at player development? Or, is it just a case of Archie misjudging some guys' determination to better themselves (as guys like Oliver, Kyle, etc. did under Archie's tutelage)?
I still maintain that, somewhere around the "Magnificent Seven" season (before, during, or afterward), Archie made a conscious decision to ride last year's Senior class as far as he could, with the hope of parlaying that into a P5 gig. And that gambit worked for him, and for us in the short run. But we're paying for it now.

Recruiting players is a crap shoot. You never know who will develop and who will not. Sometimes, it is hard to measure the intangibles.

Some very valid points.I'll add in and say that the kids that AM/any coach recruits have to hold up to their end of the bargain, too, and that is to prepare themselves by dedicating themselves, committing to practice, watching film , working on weaknesses, hitting the weights, etc. Now, I have no idea if this entire junior class dedicated themselves and pushed themselves to the max. when they got on campus. We know one player that probably cared more about campus life than anything else and he's no longer here..

Don't forget that there were two other players in his recruiting class. I'm not allowed to say their names without getting yelled at, but one of them has led his team to a couple of big wins and won CBS Freshman of the week. The other is getting limited playing time, but is a 6'6" wing player shooting 43% on his 3's. And they are doing it in the PAC 12. So if we are going to judge his recruiting class, we would need to include them.

I’m not sure you can change anything at this point. The team just doesn’t have it and has not caught fire.
Sometimes it unrealistic to expect players with less experience and talent to beat players with more experience and talent. If that was true, I could play even with Tiger Woods.

The scholarships might not technically be called contracts, but that seems to be what they essentially are. A 4 year scholarship is just 4 one year agreements tied together, those agreements can be ended at any time by the university.

And not renewing scholarships for play, versus attitude/behavior/disciplinary, is bad business.
I think some above forget the term "student-athlete".

Here is what I would do which means nothing. Some on this board need to change their opinion of this team and stop blaming Grant for everything. If you thought this team was going to be more than .500 at the start of the season then I have some swamp land I want to sell you. Be happy your seeing improvement from several players. While some are so so. They have shown signs of being good but regress backwards the next game. That is a sign of a young team still trying to figure things out. Things will get better but likely not until next year.

Sit back with a beer and watch. Or drive yourself to the pit of misery trying to figure out a solution to put this year's team into the NCAA tournament. This year is a known quantity and AG will simply play guys for future development and those who give them the best chance to win each game.

Hey guys and gals many schools have adopted a policy of offering some student-athletes full 4 year scholarships which cover the full four years without the year to year renewal. I have no idea if UD has adopted this policy.

We are what we are, people. Especially at this point in the season; you’ve seen what we got.
I will say it, again. This team is painfully skinny. D. Harris, Crutcher, Xeryius, Kostas and Mikesell with Obadiah ( ot playing) are all painfully skinny and without muscle. This team will get better at the dinner table and in the weight room. Our conditioning coach seems to be making little progress with these players. They all need to come to my house and eat what I eat. Look what its done for me. I can gain weight without any effort at all. 🥞🍗🍔🌮🍕🍟

Amen. Not our main problem or even second, but it is on the list. A few minutes into the ODU, Auburn, RI and St L games I knew we were intimidated and smoked. We have two players in Cunningham and Landers that are not finesse only players. You have to be able to play some physical basketball in order to compete with some teams.
The four seniors last year were physical players. We miss that.

The Magic Fix
UD should adopt Bruce Hornsby and the Range's "It's Just the Way It Is" and blare it before every game. Same old same old... same effort....same players... same results.... it's just the way it is. Maybe the Pep Band could play it and change their name to the Bland Band.

Here is a suggestion...WE should support a first year coach who has a thin bench and starts two freshmen and a rarely ever used last year Sophomore. Yes, that is how WE should change...

I think the question is poorly designed. It assumes we're trying to win THIS YEAR. Are you sure that what Grant is doing? Is he taking his coaches that should be doing game prep and sending them on recruiting trips? Is he playing the guys who will help him win today, or focusing on winning next year? Is he focused on installing his principles and benching guys who won't buy in or keeping the old principles of the prior staff? I can't say we know for sure.

You can. For 1 hole. Same with our players. They can hang for a few minutes but eventually the holes in their games get flushed out.

I disagree. I think we have enough talent to be over 0.500. Not much, but this is a >0.500 team. But Crosby did not improve in the offseason (what was he doing all summer?!?!), XW must be hurting, and most guys did not take the weight room seriously.
Somewhat excusable with the turmoil? OK it's human nature, let's not all say we never get distracted at work by drama. But we should be at least a couple games over 0.500 despite that. We're in no worse shape than a number of A10 teams we've played.

The changes aren't there/ AG has made some changes, playing bench less except for Svoboda.
They do well playing up tempo but you can't do it with 5 guys.
