DDN - Spelling Editor

Here's the 1st paragraph of the DDN article on the shooting at Madison Jr High yesterday.

"James Austin Hancock is scheduled to be in Butler County Juvenile Court this morning. He is chaerged with two counts of attempted murder; two counts of felonious assault; incucing panic; and making terrorist threats. Heís bein held in juvenile detention and has been interviewed."

They've had all day and night to review and write something coherent and failed miserably. OR should I say:

They'd have all dae and nite to revue and rite sumptin coherent and failed mizerably.

If this were a story about rescuing a cat out of a tree, who would care? But this is a national story that may get picked up by other news outlets...so you'd think someone with an 8th grade education would be assigned to write it...and an intern with at least 1 year of English would review it.

I have out of town (East coast) friends who love to make fun of Dayton...they have 3 issues: sneakers vs tennis shoes, pizza vs pie and the local news.

I woke up today and I wanted to read details about the kid who did the shooting...I couldn't get through the first paragraph without having to turn off the computer. I'll read about it somewhere else.

FWIW, I just checked and the proper changes have been made to this article...but it's too late as I've already moved on to other outlets.

Don't get me started on the newscasts and their spelling mistakes on the names of cities that they cover.

Lady crashes because of loose cat...

A woman with a loose cat in her car was distracted when she was trying to merge lanes, causing a five-vehicle crash along eastbound Interstate 70, troopers said.
The crash shut down the northbound lanes of the highway for a few hours, but within 30 minutes the right berm was cleared to let traffic pass while crews worked to remove debris from the lanes, the trooper said.
Were they trying to convey the "northern" lanes of the eastbound traffic? Or, did they lose track that it was I70 (E/W) and not I75 (N/S)?

Or is this just standard DDN editor practices?

"Preview: Dayton Flyers at Saint Louis Billikens"

So tomorrow is a road game? Someone better tell St. Louis there will be 13,000 waiting for them at UD Arena on Sunday.

After his Kansas State beat Wake Forest 95-88 on Thursday night, Bruce Weber laid out in one long answer the good and the bad of his Wildcats playing in the First Four.

Man kills wife in Middletown...and to explain it, the DDN writer states:

"Crista Nitz was discovered after being shot in the head by her 11-year-old daughter."

If her 11-year old daughter shot her, why is the husband being charged?

This is a 5th grade English problem...and why punctuation matters.

Three typos in one, short article.

The restaurant is “embracing the flavors of summer” with its new “Smokehouse BBQ Bacon Sandwich” and “Watermelon Mint Lemonade” in restuarants nationwide. The speciality menu items will be available now until Aug. 19.

The sandwich features grilled chicken, bacon coated in brown sugar pepper on a Hawaiian style bun with cheese, green lead lettuce and zesty BBQ sauce. The Smokehouse BBQ Bacon Sandwich has 500 calories and starts at $5.59.

My wife is the English teacher, I'm the Engineered, so I'm getting out of my lane and could be wrong, but I'll give it a shot

1) I assume Lead should be Leaf, though perhaps UD2 is correct saying is should be head, but I'm leaning towards "Leaf"

2) the term "embracing the flavors of summer" should read embracing the "flavors of summer", which also serves to put a verb into the sentence.

3) the THE in the last line should not be italicized, just the smokehouse BBQ Bacon Sandwich part, since that appears to be the official name.

that's my shot (guess) as to the 3 errors. Feel confident in the 1st one, significantly less on the next 2.

I am just talking about simple spelling errors: the 2nd restaurant is spelled restuarants; speciality should be specialty; and lead should be either leaf or head.

Not a spelling error but the DDN sports section on the internet still has a blog up about hiring Archie Miller 5 years ago. I think it's about time to take that one down as it has been up now for over 1 year.

That's nothing, they had a write up on a WSU basketball commitment for a kid that never actually showed up on campus for well over a year, it was too the point where the kid would have been a sophomore at WSU before they finally just removed their WSU blog section from the front page of their sports page.

"Miamisburg sentenced to probation for 2016 beating"

Didn't realize the entire city could be on probation for something one guy did!

Seams to happen daily on their website

I've reffed and umped enough in Miamisburg to believe the headline.

WDTN strikes again

In case you did not know, the eclipse must now be on Tuesday as 3 times in this article it talks about Dayton Christian School closing on Tuesday for the eclipse

http://wdtn.com/2017/08/16/school-to...solar-eclipse/

And I scheduled my beer drinking at the lake for Monday in hopes of seeing the eclipse, stupid me

DDN Link
Kroger has opened its first-ever restaurant concept, which serves up American comfort foods.

Cincinnati-headquartered Krogerís Culinary Development team announced it will open Kitchen 1883, which is located at 9003 U.S. Highway 42 in Union, Ky. The restaurant will operate daily offering lunch and dinner along with brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. It is scheduled to open in late October.
Another brainiac in the DDN department. Open now? Or open in October?

Only the DDN could mess this up:

"College Football: Jeske returns to lead Flayers past Drake"

FWIW, the DDN spelled 'Buckeyes' correctly.

DDN trying to do a "an-article-per-day-until-first-game" scenario, has "worst school records".

Unfortunately, they are wrong. UD has never been under 30%. So, where then, did they get the 29.1 percentage? From looking at the "Modern Era Opponent Stats" page of the media guide. They properly found the most turnovers in a season stat on the UD stats page, but totally missed the 3pt stat one.

(Figstats says, 1995-96 was worst 3pt year, shooing 30.4%.)

(edit: Heck, even on the next page, 'Team Season Marks', under 'Three-Pointers, Worst Accuracy', they have the 30.4% listed.)

RIP David Cassidy of Partridge Family fame.

His hit song’s included “I Think I Love You,” “I Can Feel Your Heartbeat” and “I Think I Love You.”
So did he have 2 different songs called, "I Think I Love You"?

1) "A man told police he and another man got into a verbal argument in the McDonald’s parking lot. The man claimed the other man pulled a semiautomatic weapon and stuck the gun barrel into his stomach before feeling the area."

So he poked him in the stomach, too....or was it more of a massage?

2) "A woman on Sunset called police to report she was held against her will and assaulted by her live in boyfriend after she told him she wanted to take other people."

Where did she want to take them? Waffle House? Disney World? I guess money is tight at their double-wide.

DDN - Wright Patt Furlough article...

The exact number of Wright-Patterson employees who wold be furloughed was not immoderately known, according to base spokeswoman Marie Vanover.
I don't think that is what they wanted Microsoft Word 95 to autocorrect that to.

tOSU recruits footballs??? No wonder they get so many favorable bounces. I wonder if their goalposts are recruited or just have to walk-on like all the other equipment.

Ouch!!

This one is egregious-

From Archdeacon's story today on the Dragon's phenom pitcher from California. As usual a wonderful story by Arch. However, he gets a major black mark for this one:

"It’s that dilemma that SI was eluding to in its question about Greene:"

CareSource construction roof fire
Dayton fire officials said in March, the smoke over downtown looked dramatic, but it was not particularly large of hazardous.
"particularly hazardous", or maybe even, "particularly large of hazardous materials", but not "particularly large of hazardous."

In the HS basketball summaries, we learned that

"Jon Yerkins batted 4-for-for on the night."

Which I guess is better than for-for-for or 4-4-4.

Or this, from story about last night's Dragons game:

"That was enough for Dayton (3-3) to win its third consecutive minor-league baseball game and second straight against the Captains (4-2). It also vaults Dayton back into early contention in the Midwest League Eastern Division."

Do the Dragons also play major league baseball?

I wish the Quote feature on this site also captured the Title line on your post, as you say basketball and the article is about baseball.

Yes, you have proven with this mistake that you are qualified to work for the DDN. Maybe you could start here at UD Pride and replace our staff writer.

Trailing 1-0, Greenville brook open a tight game in the fourth and added three more runs in the sixth. Sophomore Morgan Gilbert, senior Cassie Cromwell and Petry all scored two runs apiece for the Green Wave.
