Blue Jackets

CBJ's up 2-0 over the Washington Capitals in their best of 7 series...games 1 and 2 were in DC...games 3 and 4 in Columbus...CBJ's have never won a playoff series...good chance for the CBJ's to win the series.

My tOSU son goes to a couple games a year and says the town is pumped for their hockey team. If hockey were as fun to watch on TV as it is live, more people would care. If you ever get a chance to see NHL live, you should take the tickets and go. It's so much better when you're there.

My dad loved hockey and took me to Dayton Gems and Cincinnati Sting games as a kid. His cousin - Lucien Grenier - played on the 1969 Montreal Canadian's Stanley Cup champions and later for the LA Kings...he once sent us signed hockey sticks and pucks for Christmas...why we didn't store them away for keepsakes is a question for the royal ages.

Regardless, hockey is a great sport.

I have been a hockey fan since the late 70's watching the Gems as a kid. Then the Bombers when they were at HARA.

Love going to and watching Blue Jackets games, been searching the internet for tickets for either tonight or Thursday that I can afford, but probably just going to watch on TV. Stole a pair of tickets for only $30 over face value and great seats a few years back for the first ever home playoff game against Detroit.

We just can not keep giving up an early 2-0 lead in every game and trying to dig out of a hole, going to catch up with us.

Jackets fall in double OT, 3-2.

I am no hockey expert at all, but man, that was a long game...about 4 hours.

Exciting game, for the parts I watched. IMO, Washington looked like the better team tonight: better passing, more structured/organized attacking and play...Columbus was too sloppy with too many bad passes and turning the puck over too much....cbj's looked good attacking though.

Things that I do not understand about hockey:

offsides

icing

when is stick poking/tripping/checking a foul? Seemed like there was some stick poking, checking, and tripping that was not called a foul.

if a team hits the puck out of bounds, then the other team should get possession, there should be no face off

what are the rules regarding the crease in front of the goal?

can you check and/or poke your stick at the goalie?

You need a to just watch a game sometime with someone who knows the rules, it really is one of the easiest sports to understand once you know the rules. Quick simple answers below, I might try to add more details later as time allows. By no means am I an expert, but I think this will help a bit.

Offsides- The puck basically has to cross the blue line in the offensive zone before any of the offensive players have completely crossed the line. This eliminate cherry picking. The call last night where they overturned the goal, the Washington player entered the zone before he had control of the loose puck, then brought the puck into the zone across the blue line, thus it was offsides that video review caught.

Icing- You can not pass the puck across the center line and the blue line in your offensive end with enough momentum that it crosses the line parallel with the front of the goal (goal line). This is sometimes "waived off" if the referee feels the defensive team could have played the puck or in cases where it was tipped.

stick poking, tripping, etc a foul- Anytime a player is injured it is called, or if it impedes a player or results in a turnover is a simple way to explain it. Many times not always called if it has little bearing on the play itself or is not a dangerous flagrant act.

Puck hit out of bounds- This is actually a two minute delay of game penalty if this happens and the puck was not tipped or did not hit the glass. The call on the Blue Jackets in game #2 was bull****, as replay showed puck went off the glass then over the boards so it should not have been a delay of game penalty. If the pass or shot is tipped which is usually the case when the puck goes over the boards, no penalty and just a face off. As a side not, before boards were added on the sides and extended higher, I saw a couple real nasty pucks to the head of spectators at HARA Arena. I ducked once (did not spill my beer) and the lady behind me took a direct hit, always felt bad about it but was natural split second reaction on my part to keep my teeth!

If you check or poke your stick at the goalie, a real good chance your going to get your butt kicked, then once the fight is over be spending time in the penalty box. The goalie is fairly well protected rules wise and your not allowed to interfere with their actions, especially within the goal crease.

The cbj's are losing 1-0 in the first period. Ugh.

The expansion Las Vegas Golden Knights qualify this year for the playoffs in their 1st year, and then win their 1st round playoff series.

Unbelievable.

It took the expansion cbj's 8 years to even make the playoffs, and they are now in their 17th year this year without a playoff series win.
