Ugly win. Glad I went to bed before the OT.
I have not refereed college, so I have no idea if there is a specific rule to cover it. The refs stop play for many reasons, and some of those are clock related, like not starting the clock or shot clock. Once the players stopped, you would think the ref blows the whistle, but they were confused on that one, as was the moron who did not reset the shot clock. Isn't the shot clock reset upon change of possession, and therefore was not reset and play should have stopped? No time left, but still that rule should apply.

I realize we are arguing theory here and not reality, because UD would have still had a heave and a prayer, or another turnover.

I dabbled in D3 ball back in the 90s and the rules are 99% the same with only a couple variances. But one remains consistent; you only stop play when you hear a whistle. Even then (jump ball struggle) players rarely stop...this situation should be no different.

The rules for when an official can stop play are spelled out. There are correctable errors and under 2-minute opportunities...that's it. Inadvertent horns are not mentioned anywhere.

Regardless, it was a confusing situation and an obviously frustrating game for players, coaches, officials and fans. Emotions get inside everyone's head and only makes things worse as most people want to place blame on everyone except themselves. Which typically means the officials are the problem...when, in reality, it's an impossible situation.

Ugly basketball = ugly coaching = ugly players = ugly officiating =

I got this email today from a buddy in Baltimore...

" I went to my 8 year old daughter’s game, which they lost 8-4, and it was a more entertaining, less frustrating game than I watched last night. "

Truer words could not have been spoken.
