Kuwik isn't the type of person who would hold a grudge like that.
Plus based on all the recruiting threads I thought UD was just recruiting kids who are from Florida now.

Well his recruiting skills will come in handy...
And, just for the record, I'm a Wayne HS graduate. (Way before they got good in basketball or football)

I live in NJ and admittedly do not know anything about Wayne HS. Is an assistant coach on a well known D1 college program like UD taking a high school coaching a career advancement? I am assuming that it is a large high school with exceptional sports programs. There are a few high school coaches in NJ, like old man Hurley, who are very powerful and college coaches seek them out during recruiting process. Kuwik certainly will be able to assist high school kids during the recruitment process. I guess any head coaching position is good and if the Wayne HS program is that good, it is probably like coaching a D2 or D3 program. Good luck and success to him.

From what little I know about him, I agree. An absolutely outstanding guy. Who knows, he may push a few kids our way, and they definately have a few young guys with potential in their program.

In my opinion, family came first for Kuwik and he did not even consider leaving the Dayton area, which I applaud him for. He is quite happy here I am told.

It would not be classified it as career advancement in basketball terms.
I personally think KK might be changing life goals/priorities or just taking a break from the crazy world of D1 coaching. He just got married last year and has a newborn who was just born a month or two ago. I also believe his wife is an attorney in Dayton so money probably isn't a concern.

Kevin is an awesome person. He has a new daughter, so I am thrilled that he has this opportunity. I was sad that Anthony did not retain him. I hope the Wayne job irks well for him and gives him future opportunities.
Alien Griffin told me that Kevin recruited Pierre very hard after the rest of the coaching staff felt they could not recruit him. Allen thinks the world of Kevin too!
I will always be a Kevin Kuwik fan. Read the articles about Kevin from Archdeacon.
If Wayne grads attend UD great!

Interesting. On the outside looking in, KK seems to be the type of guy with personal priorities in order that doesn't 100% include getting to the highest levels of college basketball all at once. Wayne has top notch "access", facilities, etc. He will do well at Wayne and I look forward to watching him. I would only guess that when he is able to, he will be back at the college level again.

An interesting part of this story is the career move of the former Wayne high scool boys basketball coach, Travis Trice. Travis Trice wins the 2014-15 Ohio State boys basketball high school championship. He coaches two sons to division 1 basketball scholarships plus two kids who sign with the University of Dayton, plus a bunch of other kids who get division 1 scholarships. Then in May of this year, he takes the GIRL'S head basketball coaching job at Wayne high school. Would this be considered a move up the coaching carousel? Has there ever been a top men's college basketball coach who has moved to coach the LADIES division 1 basketball program at the same school?

He has a daughter - Olivia -on varsity. Here are her sophomore stats from 2016-17: http://www.gwocsports.com/bkPlayerSt...?player=404103
FWIW, I reffed one of the Wayne girl's games 2 weekends ago at the RecPlex/UD team camp. His daughter is the 2nd best girl on the team and is an insane ball handler and intense defender. She'll play D1 somewhere and will be deserving of the scholarship.

Would be interesting to understand the economics. As an asst coach at UD would think he would likely be making something like $100K. As a HS coach only ( assuming he's not also a teacher) I'd guess he'd be making less than half that.

If he was resigning from an assistant coaching position at UD to take a large pay cut to be the head coach at Wayne, that would be one thing. But $50K (if the job pays that) is infinitely more than zero.
His priorities were his family and moving was not an option to him. That pretty much meant he had to land an assistant gig at UD, Wright State or maybe Miami. Or look for work out of college hoops.

FWIW, Coach Trice's official salary at Wayne for 2013 and 2015 was $1. His 2014 salary wasn't listed.
FWIW II, Centerville, Fairmont and Oakwood pay their boy's varsity coaches somewhere between $6400-$7200.

It is an easy economics lesson. Money can not buy happiness. If all our theories are correct, KK chose to stay local, allow his wife to keep her job, and spend more time with his newborn daughter. I worked way too many hours when my daughter was young, missing way too much of her first few years. That is something I can never get back. I will root for KK wherever he is at for making the right decisions in life. Great job coach and dad.

Wayne produced two of Dayton's all-time great musicians Kim and Kelley Deal (pixies, breeders) and a former Playboy playmate Tina Bockrath. Pretty good resume right there!

In recent years, especially. The Wikipedia page for Wayne lists 9 current or former NFL players including Ohio State QB turned NFL wide receiver Braxton Miller. In basketball, the Trice boys and our very own Xeyrius Williams and Trey Landers (whose brother plays football at Ohio State).

Not a career advancement necessarily and it's not really fair to equate a private east coast high school basketball power like St. Anthony to Wayne, but the move for Kuwik is not a bad career move by any means. Obviously, it seems like a good move with his family situation, affinity for Dayton, etc. But it's also one of those things that he can definitely spin as a positive on the resume. It further solidifies some high school connections in Ohio, and he gains head coaching experience. Keep in mind that a lot of assistants hoping to land head coaching gigs have never been head coaches at any level. Kuwik gets to put that on his resume and I think that could be a pretty big selling point in the future if he wanted to get back into college ball at some point.

I think it's a good thing. Grant said very complementary things of Kuwik, and Kuwik worked very hard for Grant in the interim weeks once Grant was hired. Ultimately, he was passed over for guys with whom Grant had an established relationship. So you wouldn't blame Kuwik if he did hold a grudge, but I find it hard to believe that Kevin would have anything bad to say about UD. My guess is he will be seen in the arena with his family taking in some games this season, and will continue to root for the UD program and especially all those kids he recruited to UD. So I feel pretty confident he will be an advocate for UD moving forward.

Most people on here probably have no idea what your talking about, but I sure do. The number of kids who just happen to be great athletes who transfer or move to Wayne right before their freshman season is disgusting to say the least. Why should other schools in the GWOC have to play and compete against for championships, an all star team of kids from throughout the Miami Valley.
Even their girls basketball program has gotten into the act, as 4 of their top 6 or 7 on the roster decided that the excellent academics (cough cough) at Wayne was reason enough to move to Huber to study, and of course play basketball. In the mean time, girls who have worked hard and played for their school since 3rd grade travel ball started, get pushed to the end of the bench or even cut from the team in favor of the recruited, I mean newly relocated players.

No need to recruit players when there is a proven track record of kids getting scholarships when they play at Wayne. More exposure and you're competing against better competition day in and day out in practice to continue improving.

Heh....Trotwood/Springfield....may not directly recruit from a coaching standpoint, but you can bet next weeks pay the "student athletes" drive the outsiders to the Wayne Train.
Huber Heights or Springfield? Family still lives in Springfield.
http://www.daytonflyers.com/roster.a...31&path=mbball
Braxton? Originally from Springfield.
Countless other football players that started careers elsewhere only to finish as Wayne. Just landed a kid from Dunbar.
Nothing against the players themselves...but the school has a LONG history of pillaging programs.

Still waiting on proof that they were "recruited" and didn't just want to come play there with the best of the best and give themselves the best chance to play at the next level.

You are underestimating how much time HS basketball coaches put in. It's not just the regular season. It's the summer camps, summer leagues, open gyms, weightlifting, and other stuff beyond that. You don't coach HS basketball for the money.

He might be, but that is not a requirement at some school districts. I have no idea about Wayne's policies though.
Also I wonder how the assistants contracts at UD were structured. Is there any chance he might still be getting paid by UD?

I would doubt he still is. Most of the time when the HC leaves, the assistants contracts are voided. I would assume this is how it is done at UD as well.

I now know more than I ever knew about Wayne High School and Mr. Kuwik. From a New Jersey outpost of the Flyer Faithful, I thank you all for your information and comments. From what has been written about him on this board, I believe he is an outstanding father and husband, who is doing the best for his future, his family and himself.

These Wayne recruiting allegations are hilarious. One poster even used the word pillaged.
Wayne has never been caught recruiting. Nor have they been investigated.
I graduated from Wayne. Plenty of athletes moved in, moved out and some of them didn't play school sports. I was an athlete their myself and I can tell you that no one was ever recruited there. Everyone came for a better opportunity and most of them got it.

I graduated from Wayne. Plenty of athletes moved in, moved out and some of them didn't play school sports. I was an athlete their myself and I can tell you that no one was ever recruited there. Everyone came for a better opportunity and most of them got it.

Ramod, as a former resident of HH growing up, I still know a lot of people in the Heights. Whether some of these kids are recruited or not, there is still a bad taste in the mouth of many in the community because kids do come over and displace other kids who have played with the school mates all through pee wee football, travel basketball/baseball and Jr. HS teams. Winning cures a lot of ills for many in the community but don't think it's all happy times in HH. MANY are very PO'd about the carpetbaggers.

Have you ever been asked by OHSAA to join them while they read electric meters?

Bad taste in the mouth of many. Hmmm.
If you subscribe to this theory than you get the current mess that is Centerville football. If you are ****ed someone took your job you probably shouldn't of had it in the first place.
You know some whiney parents is what it sounds like.

I have not unfortunately.
Wayne had been accused of "recruiting" since the 90s....
It is what it is I guess.

Took your job? You do realize we are talking about 14 year old high school freshmen, right?

Concur with RamodWaleskowski. Please consider that people are confusing the Stebbins high school and Wayne high school school redistributing or gerrymandering that was done with some kind of recruiting allegations.

I can assure you that several of us on here who know people in Huber that are quite ****ed over all this, as well as many throughout the Dayton area, that are not confusing any of this with whatever Stebbins football issue your talking about.
It is not just Wayne football either.
Kids do not leave Beavercreek or CJ (who do not live anywhere near the Huber Height school disctrict) for "better academics"
When the AD is also the head football coach, well, I won't go there.....
And while I have the stage, thank you to the unsigned red pipper on this topic. I can assure you I want absolutely nothing but the best for Kevin Kuwik, one of the greatest men to ever sit on the Flyer bench or walk this great earth of ours. This is absolutely the best possible available basketball job KK could take of the remaining options when AG did not keep him on at UD, yet still stay local with his family.
Here is a little prediction for all of you Wayne fans. When Travis Trice's daughter graduates in 2 years, Trice takes over the boys program again, as KK will have been hired by UD as an assistant for Coach _________ who has moved on from Grants staff.
Everyone have a great 4th of July week!

This is only related by a few degrees of separation, but Trice took the Wayne job that was vacated by a coach who left after being disciplined for allowing here husband to help coach after he was disallowed from coaching the team. Does anyone know why he was not allowed to coach?

http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/...wd8oMxlnavOyJ/
"The Ohio Board of Education in 2016 permanently denied Robert L. Miller Jr. the required three-year pupil activity permit required to coach. The denial, which is at the state board’s discretion, was based on a 1999 court-martial conviction at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for attempted larceny, conspiracy to commit larceny and other related charges. A permanent denial makes an individual “ineligible to apply for any license issued by the state board of education.”
So basically it sounds like he stole something in 1999 and the OBE wouldn't give him the required permit that would allow him to coach.
