Wow, Gating has a sweet stroke, and he can get into the lane as well. I would consider him a combo guard.

Versatile, super athletic lefty. Can defend 1-5. Rebounds outside his area. Put it in deck well. Hits the trail 3, elbow & short corner jumper.

We need more lefties. I remember when we had a bunch of them: Ramod, W, D. J. Stelly, and Nate Green.

But I bet there will not be enough cups for the First Four tonight and the NCAA is going to take the First Four away from Dayton. The sky is falling -- oh wait, that is just more snow coming down.

Rivals.com lists Serrel Smith at 6'3" and 170 lbs. He has 3 stars but after watching his you tube videos he looks more like a 4 star to me. He looks like he would really fit in with the way Anthony Grant likes to play. He has quick hands and looks to me like he could play at the point or shooting guard. He would be a great pickup at this rather late date!
If he proves out to be as good as the last Smith we had and leads us to four more NCAA appearances in a row that would be great!

Given that the Flyers have two freshman guards who started most of the past season (and show considerable promise) and have already recruited two more guards, will Smith really give Dayton a serious look. We need a BIG! and he doesn't have to be a 3+ star.

That is why Wyatt Walker, 6'9" 240 lbs. grad transfer from Samford with two years remaining would be a good pickup. You can read more about him on the 2018 Transfer Market.
Our two freshman guards showed considerable promise but we need to see if the dropoff at the end of the season was due to fatigue with not being used to playing over 30 games or better opposing guards accentuating their weaknesses.
If Smith had it down to Dayton and Ole Miss before he chose the latter he may just come here and, with his talent, we should gladly welcome him! You can never have too many guards!
First we need to see if there are going to be 1 more or 2 more transfers after XW.
I am hoping that Kostas and Obadiah will be huge pleasant surprises!

He looks ok but he is a Jr. and to be honest I think Tre Mann (also a Jr.) who goes to the Villages High School in Florida is where we should concentrate our efforts.
As far as 2018 is concerned I think our efforts should be on Neftali Alvarez from Miami Christian in Miami, Florida. Frankie Policelli from Long Island Lutheran in New York as well!

Minnesota, Rutgers, and Wisconsin make Tai Strickland’s top three.
Looks like UD is out here. Tai's dad is Depaul legend Rod Strickland, they couldn't make the cut

Simons is doing a fifth year at IMG Academy. The question is can he go high enough in the draft. If not projected high enough, then he goes to college.

Another domino of the Penny hiring is Wichita State lost their 2018 PG recruit Alex Lomax to Memphis. Lomax is from Memphis and played for Penny in high school.
Not sure if we're still after Neftali Alvarez but I'd expect them to circle back around on him. They had him out for a visit in the fall

Didn't think we had a chance anyway because he hadn't even visited. I wish him the best! There are many other players out there! We got a very serviceable guard 5 years ago in one Scoochie Smith. They don't all have to be 4 and 5 stars!

Decent chance I think Dayton gets involved with 3 Star Drake decommit out of Chicago Simeon, Messiah Jones. He’s a beast on the boards. A lot of Josh Cunningham in him.

Playing for a talented — but undersized — team at Simeon last season, Jones was often tasked with defending and rebounding against bigger and stronger players. A plus athlete who performed admirably in a jack-of-all-trades role for the Wolverines, Jones was one of the most versatile frontcourt players in the area last season.
http://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/pre...-messiah-jones
Sounds like he was playing the Kendall Pollard role

With Ricardo Greer's Dominican connections I bet the staff is looking at a couple Dominican guards Andres Feliz and L.J. Figueroa in the JUCO ranks.
Andres, who plays for Northwest Florida State, is a former USF commit ranked No. 12 in JucoRecruiting.com's Top 100 Player Rankings, and No. 1 among point guards.
L.J. was a top 100 recruit who played at the same high school as Jhery Matos in Orlando who went to New Mexico State and transferred out after their coach left for New Mexico.

If I read these correctly, the following dates are important:
Current - March 28, recruiting period
March 29 - April 5 (Noon), Dead period
April 5(Noon) - April 18, recruiting period except April 9-12 dead period
April 11 - May 16 - Regular period NLI (expect some signings here)
April 19 - July 5, Quiet period except April 20-22, 27-29 Evaluation period, NBA Draft Combine, and May 17-25 Dead period
July 6 - 31 Dead period except 11-15, 18-22, 25-29 Evaluation periods
UD First summer session starts May 11
UD Second summer session June 22
I suppose we could hear verbals from players at any time but nothing official from UD until April 11 - May 16.

You can get "sign" a guy after the signing period ends on May 16, they just sign a grant in aid instead of a letter of intent

Actually, he is listed at 6’4”. He goes to Trinity Valley Community College. I would be elated if we got him!

Why is UD and others not after Sincere Carry out of Solon? Go after him and maybe he gets his release from D2 West Liberty.

Carry is considered a bit undersized and has two questionable knees. The kid could turn out to be like Richardson from Loyola. Interesting that none of the MAC schools in Ohio have offered. He has no D1 offers.

Yes, I do understand he's had knee issues (may have answered my own question) but that kid is top 3-4 talent in Ohio. Not a weakness on that kid. Strong, can jump out of the gym, run, dribbles thru/around players like a blur, shoot and gets plenty of his teammates involved. Don't have enough fingers to count the amount of times he fed passes to open guys in the state final for wide open 3's and they just couldn't hit them..
Will be interesting who comes calling (gotta believe there will be plenty) and if he can't get out of his LOI now he'll leave after a year..

https://www.prephoops.com/2018/03/un...-land-d-offer/
Kid is a winner who plays with a chip on his shoulder. There'd be outrage for sure if Dayton went after him, given that he's got no other D1 offers, and there's the medical stuff... but literally everyone that sees him walks away thinking this kid is just too good to be playing D2. Seems like a chance worth taking. I'd love to see him at Dayton.

We had an undersized kid (for his position) come in from Brooklyn in the 80's that everyone passed on because he had knee problems. I'd say that worked out well for UD...

And alot of times that's that little guard you wouldn't even pick up on your intramural team let alone a kid like Carry who is as athletic as any kid in the state with a college-ready body already.

Are the academic requirements different to be eligibile at the D2 level? If it’s academic, kids usually go JUCO, not D2.

A kid could need a certain test score, class or GPA to make into school and a D2 school signs them in the fall in the hopes they can get it by spring. If so big win for them, if not the kid ends up in JUCO anyways.
SEC schools sign guys all the time in football knowing it's a longshot for them to make it into school and they end up in JUCO/prep schools if they

Yes there is a different set of clearing house requirements for D1 and D2. Not sure of all the particulars but there are definite differences.

So Adrian Nelson a 6'6 F is likely back on the market after Detroit Mercy's coaching staff got fired. It sounds like he had a strong senior year. Supposedly he's a pretty good athlete who can player forward spot.
I have no idea if he's good enough to play at Dayton but it seems like he's had a nice senior and he played against good competition in high school. Pickerington Central the high school he went to in the Columbus has put out of a lot good players including former Flyer target and Michigan player Caris LeVert.
He had a bunch of Horizon League/MAC type offers in the fall.
Adrian Nelson – ’18 SF Pickerington Central: The 6’6 combo forward from the Columbus area put on a show in the first half of what eventually became a semifinal loss for his Tigers, as Nelson logged 21 points in the first frame. A super athlete who has expanded his game to being able to knock down jumpers with confidence, Nelson is a threat to rip and run on every rebound, plays with terrific energy and has as much long-term upside as just about anyone in Ohio’s senior class. Signed to play with Detroit Mercy next year, Nelson is the latest D1 product from Pickerington Central who we believe will have a standout college career with his athleticism, versatility and emerging skill-set.

Florida Gulf Coast G Zach Johnson (RS JR) has received permission to contact other schools. Grad transfer with one year of eligibility.
This might be one to watch. From Miami, FL 6'2 guard who was 1st team all conference.
Watched him play in the ASun title game and he looked like a good player. I remember the announcers said he was one of the best defensive players in the conference

We also have former FGCU PG Brett Comer on staff, I'm not sure if these things really matter that much but who knows. I'm all for a grad transfer who is known as a great defender.

Matos I would think would sign then.
transfers don't have to necessarily sign on signing day. They don't sign a NLOI so they can operate on a different timetable.

Here's a name to watch, 6'11 Carlos Curry from Georgia. Was a Middle Tennessee State recruit but just opened it up after their coaching search

3-pt shooters
Seems like a lot of the teams that advanced in the tournament have a wealth of 3-pt shooting talent. Do the stats of the new incoming players indicate that any/some/all of them have a strength in this area? Schools like UD, which have difficulty attracting the top-notch big men, need to offset this disadvantage with shooting accuracy.

Yes, but every one of them had at least one big with size and wingspan, who could play offense, defense and rebound. Spellman, Wagner, Krutwig, Bagley, Koumadje, Azubuike, Reed, Haas. Virtually every team played a point guard, three whatevers and a big center.
Of the two incoming, one can shoot the three and the other, not so well. Mikesell, hopefully has and will improve. Toppin's three shot is unknown to me, but usually a kid who grows like he did, can shoot from the outside.

I thought Wagner was a beast through most of the tournament. Villanova neutralized him to some degree with their athleticism. Regardless, he is a heck of a player. The value of the big man is equally important on the defensive side as the offensive side. Wagner excelled at both ends.

@VerbalCommits
2018 St. Raymond (NY)/Santa Clara commit G Omar Silverio is reopening his recruitment.
Dayton was recruiting him last summer, not sure if the interest is still there

I do think we need a knock down shooter ala Norm Grevey, even if he is someone who comes off the bench. As for the bigs, we need bigs like Nova has who can defend other bigs but play like a guard on offense.

This seems to be some of AGs style. He appears to want shooters all over the floor. And if you have a deep bench of players who can also hit 3s I think you can go with two-deep solid bigs. I’m for the best talent we can get, but if you have depth at shooters you may not need a superstar big.

Loyola proved you don't need a superstar big. He filled a great role for them, but he wasn't a superstar.
