Flyers win!
78-69 Final. Flyers are back baby. A huge win against a pretty darn good team in the Dukes.

Nice win! That's the team we saw pre-conference (sans the Creigton game). If they bring this game night in night out (minus the to's), this team will be dancing. Let's bring it against GW.
UMass finishing off Temple right now. Temple must stink.
Go Flyers!!

Not much not to like about this win (except maybe the turnovers, but I digress). We had a great second half offensively and a solid defensive effort at the same time on the road. This is a good matchup for us because we like to play in the open court and so does Duquesne. The dunks UD had in this one were tremendous too.
A much better feeling about tonight's win, and hopefully this will carry through for a while.
A great night to be a Flyer!

Sweet!
Great game, CJ
Great game, Luke
Great game, Rob
Great game, CW
And I can't believe I am writing this, but great game, Coach Gregory. Way to keep DU on their heels and keep the hot hands in the game.
Sweet win!!!

Much Better!
Channelsurfing feed worked great. Nice to see a quality win on the road in spite of the gazillion turnovers. If I heard correctly, the announcers said we had five players in double figures! WOW!!

What most people on this board don't realize is this team's whole season is based on A14 play. If they go 7-9 in the league, they can't even play in the NIT because you have to .500 or better in your league to go to the NIT. I don't see this team winning more than 1 road game (maybe none) and probably losing 2-3 home games. I had to burst some of your bubbles, but this team very well may have started 14-1 and end up going to the CBI tournament. There is a difference between being realistic and negative. As they say, reality hurts.

Absolutely great game when we needed it! I know.....too many TO's but we have to stress the positive tonight. Flyers came to play! RL hit some big buckets. MJ came to life in the second half. Very impressed with the W! BG showed some new defensive wrinkles. Flying high right now.

Big time D in the second half. I think the Dukes were held to about 35% in the second half.
58% for the game for UD

As Tom Hamlin(for you old timers) used to say, that was a wild and whooly one. Good effort. amazing game in many ways. I don't know what to say about the turnovers, but Flyers were very aggressive tonight and it showed. A good win on the road.

When you can score 75+ points in a game, it takes pressure off the defense.

The only real negatives were TOs and some defensive lapses. Otherwise, a very good game at a time when we needed one. L & B talked about how the frosh stepped-up tonight, and we needed those contribs from CJ & LF. Those 2 freebies by CJ, especially, were huge.
GO FLYERS! BEAT GW!

Never felt comfortable until about 45 seconds to go. Our frosh stepped up big and give us a vision of the future. Glad to see we shook off Fordham, but turnovers and hitting the frebbies concern me. That said, this was away and an A-10 away win. Makes me feel better about the rest of the year.
Got crap from my wife because Channel Surfer had that adult video ad below the game. Went to full screen, but she thinks I was yelling because I was watching porn.

Hopefully, we saw RL really "come of age" tonight. If he can keep up that level of play for the next 6 weeks, we stand a good chance of Dancing come March.

BG stated after the game that while we had a lot of to's he felt they we agressive to's for the most part and he can live with that. Just not the lazy to's.
All in all they played together as a team again....and BG showed some new wrinkles....no not from aging , defense...zone, traps etc.

That's ok ... it just gets my goat to see comments like that after games like Fordham (also a win) and then have them fade into obscurity as if they were never made. Figured I'd try to see how that prediction will ride out the year.

WOW Amazing! we win on the road against good compitition and still Schraff and Pinhead are doom and gloomers. Maybe schraff+pinhead =Trolls. If you can't say anything good tonight then you are not a Dayton fan. I don't post much but you guys and Kief are too much to stand. Go ahead and attack me. I won't respond or play your game. Watching the game with the Duquesne video feed, the DU announcers were drooling over RL and LW. I got the feeling listening to them they didn't expect to win tonight. That's great, maybe we have become the "elephant" that nobody wants to play. Too bad UMass didn't feel that way! As Yogi said "90% of the game is 50% mental".

It really did seem like BG made some serious adjustments in this game.
A zone press, with a trap!
1-3-1 defense
2-3 defense
Playing RL and LW at the same time.
Trying to post up CW in the first half.
It's hard to say how BG would have worked everybody's minutes if fouls were not an issue, but it did seem like there were fewer subs tonight. He let guys stay in longer, or employed them strategically when he saw a possible mismatch or need. They were not thrown in there willy nilly like hockey lines.
Flyers big men need to value the ball more. Too many TO's were from bringing the ball low, down to their waist. But overall, lots of guys came to play today. CJ was HUGE. Luke hit some big shots. And Rob carried us with his hot hand. All newcomers. MJ stepped up in the second half as well. Great to see. We needed that win BADLY. That was a great effort, and it really is nice to play a game against a team that likes to run as much as we do, and hates the half court offense as much as we do. We just had too much for them. Five in double figures. Very nice.

Did somebody say Tom Hamlin?
"Jim Gottschall's guarding (insert opponent's name) like bark on a tree."
He used that line about once a half, or at least once a game.
Only in Dayton.
He was a Carl's Tavern regular.

From the AP wrap-up .......
"With Duquesne applying full-court pressure to try to come back, Dayton broke the press to dunk for three consecutive baskets in a 90-second stretch - by Chris Johnson, Wright and Little - to make it 74-63 with 2:02 to play. The Flyers' seven dunks gave them 61 for the season, matching a school record with 13 games remaining. "

Dunks are nice, but they only count for 2 points, same as any other shot in front of the line. I raather see us concentrate on just hitting the bucket using the glass. We have too many missed dunks! That is not to say that there isn't the right time for a dunk, but just get the bucket!

I'm sorry that is had to come at Paul William's expense, but some bodies had to start dropping out of this rotation. It may be a coincidence, but the bench scores 43 and shoots 60% on the night PW sits out, ST gets 4 minutes, and 8 guys basically do the heavy lifting.
I'm hoping we're seeing a trend here.

Just got back..
Just got back from the game....and whew am I happy we won!
Great intensity throughout, turnovers were a problem, but overall, this team showed some heart tonight.
However, I do not believe Duquesne did very good scouting of the Flyers because they never sagged on London and really leaved the lane wide open for drives and putback dunks. Eh, I didn't mind it..
One last things, Dayton fans are the best!! I know we all know that already and it really never stops amazing me.
Anyway, just some quick thoughts..I'm just really glad to get home safe with the way the roads are.

I love the dunks. If we can take a lay up/finger roll or dunk, why not slam it home. You get a lot of momentum from dunks, especially if they are as explosive as the ones we have. These provide a lot of excitement for players and fans. Most of the ones we miss are the ones we get fouled on. Given, though, we can't be trying to jump flatfooted over an opposing team center to get the dunk (cough-Charles-cough).

Old Old Timers
Jumpin Joe - I'll go you one better as far as old time UD announcers. How many of you remember Charlie Hinkle (I don't recall who was the color man in those days (the '50s) -- maybe he did the games by himself. Anybody remember the color man with Charlie?)

Weren't the color guys Ted Baxter or Ted Knight and Frank Drebin or Leslie Nielson? I seem to remember them going on to greater glory in Hollywood...

This is the type of focus UD will need to succeed in the A10, especially on the road, this year.
Good win! Go get GW and get another W.
p.s. This was a surprise outcome for me and I like surprises.

SDF - I would think cannelsurfing could only show replays if the originator of the feed has replays. It does not appear that any of the All Access feeds do replays, Actually, I wish UD's camera people were as good as what we saw tonight from Duquesne. I still have to chuckle (to keep from putting a fist through my computer screen) when our camera person forgets to swivel the camers after a foul shot and while the action is going on at the other end of the court, the camera is fixed on a vacant foul line.

Very nice.

You might almost say and agree that the UD staff has been listening and reading this board, as there was some pro and con chatter about early last week!!
and 8 (nine with ST) in the rotation.

I watched on CS.net, but only the last 5 or so minutes... I forgot (I know, some fan). Observations/Questions:
Flyers inbound with about a minute and a half left after a DUQ bucket. They're pressing, and we run an OB baseline pass (RL passes along the baseline OB to LW, circles around to take the inbound). While it's nothing new, it was pretty slick. One thing that used to annoy me was our inability to inbound, but this seemed to work like a charm. Is there any reason why it wouldn't work more often? Not against a smarter press?
Didn't get to see Huelsman play. I was wondering about how he played. Obviously there was foul trouble.
I was very glad to see BG using LW and RL at the same time end of game.
Sorry if this was explained in another post, I looked, and tried searching, but no dice for me.

How many posters remember Dave and Dick Ricketts, and Sihugo Green (probably the 1st 40 inch vertical to play on our campus) from the hyper UD/DU rivalry era??

Didn't Sihugo Green play for the Knicks in the fifties? Bucky would know.

I just checked and he was the #1 draft pick in the entire NBA in 1956-- went to the Rochester Royals.
As a kid I recall his hang time was unmatched. He would stop and go straight up like a pogo stick.

I would like to think that they are watching the game as a spectator and not just inept at their work or don't give a rats ass. But it happens all too often I'm afraid.
Some of us complained to Barney Senter play by play announcer for 1610 and the womens games. He spoke to UD and there response was that these were free broadcasts and they didn't have the money invested in it etc. I thought it was a very weak response coming from UD. They are trying to generate a following on the net and marketing UD which I would think would want to put their best foot forward, free or not.
From a marketing perspective I figured they were offering the streams free to build up a following then introduce the $$$ side of things. Guess I was wrong.

I am unsure of the cost involved but this might be an opportunity for a sponsor to step up and pay the cost. It could even be multiple sponsors that didn't compete with the others. During the game they could get free advertising and maybe ads at the top or side of the screen to allow access to a website.

The Good Ol' Days
SDF - Yes, unfortunately I remember watching (on Channel 7 even back then) the Ricketts brothers and Si Green. In those days, Duquesne was probably our biggest rival and we always played home and home series (in the same season) with the Dukes, X, Louisville, Miami, Cincinnati, etc. Those were the days!
