Anyone else notice the clock continues to run after a shot is made? Thought the clock stopped after a basket.

Good lord can we stop complaining about RL being out. If we make free throws it's no big deal if CJ is playing no one prob. says a word.

Steven Thomas was exposed today. I am LIVID right now! We blow every chance we have of being highly ranked, getting some national recogintion, and getting momentum. We are SCREWED in the A-10 tournament and we may end up being a NIT 1 seed. Yes, I am VERY pessimistic right now

I feel like we hardly took a three in the second half. Really would have been nice to have MJ, PW, MP and/or LF knock down a couple tonight. SLU just packed it in on us all night and we never shot over them. We just kept forcing it inside.

Make our FT's, we win this game. Oh well...we need to bounce back Wed. at RI.
Here comes the overrated chant. These SLU students must not think very highly of their own basketball team. I'm glad they can finally have a sell out.

Does anyone have a suicide hotline for this guy? Come on. It's a road loss in a tough place. We had foul trouble and didn't have CJ. I can handle this. We just really have to show up the next three. Our three point shooting and freethrow shooting will need to bail us out of more games like this.

Everyone does realize this SLU team was as hot as any team in the A10? They have won 5 of 6 (now 6 of 7) were playing in front of their first sell-out ever in their new building and we have our 3 best player ruled out during the day today.
Can everyone take one giant step back off the ledge?

poor free throw shooting - check
poor shooting percentage - check
poor three-pt shooting - check
early foul trouble - check
awful officiating - check....
put another in the L column.

Not even the close to the reason we lost this game
1) Terrible FT shooting
2) Bad rebounding in 2nd half
3) Lack of 3pt shooting
4)CJ being out
Officiating was horrible, but we had our chances and did not execute at the stripe. Every great coach and knowledgeable basketball person knows you win and lose games at the FT line.

Not their best effort tonight...
Did the officiating hurt us?? Yes
Did not having CJ and RL hurt us?? Yes
Did the Billikens do what they needed to do to win the game down the stretch?? Yes
We are fine.... Deep breaths

You don't want to be down to a team and have to rely on London Warren to run your offense to get back a lead. People better realize that when he is in the game, Dayton is playing 4 on 5 at the offensive end. He can't/won't shoot from the outside, he gets blocked on dribble drives to the basket way to much, and he's less than a 70% FT shooter as the team's PG.
When it comes to injuries, UD is snake bit.

Did we have anyone play offense tonight besides CW. Losing CJ and RL hurts a bunch. PW can play great defense, but he does nothing on the offensive end. MP was again afraid to shoot. With these pathetic offensive players if they do not shoot 80% from the foul line, they lose.

How's this for a statistic:
Dayton had zero bench points in the second half.
You can forget any chances of this team winning if the we don't get bench contributions.
Saint Louis is a difficult matchup for Dayton. They have fantastic defense. We have a middling offense in the half court (and i'm being kind about that.) That spells trouble for us on the road. I think we better hope that we can make more out of second chance opportunities and make more points from the line if we want to beat the Bills should we see them again. I, for one, don't want any part of them. Again, they are a terrible matchup for us.

I watch this team almost every game. If this was football, and Warren just played defense, I'd say ok. But he is horrible in the clutch. Heinous. And whenever he's on the court our offense plays 4 on 5.
So, I amend my statement to he sucks on offense, which is why we lost tonight. At at the most crucial point, he not only went into traffic with no idea what he was going to do with the ball, he caused an over and back which could have been a dunk. Whatever you gain in D you lose on O in more ways than you know. With a decent PG we beat the crap out of that team, but they get to double team whoever has the ball because you not only don't have to guard Warren, you pray that he drives with it.

Question:
Just a dumb question here, for all you armchair coaches. But if Lisch is an absolute lights out shooter, and you don't want him shooting free throws, wouldn't you throw 2 or 3 guys on him so StL would be forced to inbound to SOMEONE else?
My pea brain says yes. Seems then someone else would have been forced to make the freebies to secure the game.

I honestly thought our effort was there tonight. SLU played a good game. And on defense they packed it in. We needed to hit some mid range jumpers or threes to spread the D. Not only did we not make any, i feel like we hardly took any.
We outrebounded them by about 14 i think. That's effort. It also just shows how badly we shot and how badly we did from the line.

Why do we always stand around for 20 seconds before we run our offense? We did it down 5 with a minute left...with a timeout thrown in for good measure!
Awful game in every way. And we're not going to beat URI either, unless we play about eleventy bajillion times better.
Ugh.

I think we must have ****ed off the basketball gods for taking Rob away from us. I have to believe that there was a reason why Rob was always in the game at the end. Tonight we now see why Rob was in the game at the end. Bottom line I FEEL we would have won this game with Rob at the point.

Obviously any loss is bad, but considering SLU has been red hot as of late, is this considered to be a good or bad loss?

PW played 20 minutes.
Mickey had to play because MJ was in foul trouble, ST was completely overmatched when he was in, and Kurt only played 24 minutes and had 7 rebounds.

Because BG completely disregards the offensive end of the floor.

sorry meant ST...13min
KH had 7 rebounds...but was completely overmatched by SLU's speed and had no place being in there

I agree. How come it was a Rugby scrum for St Louis on the defensive end but Dayton breathes on a guy and gets the foul?
Anybody else think this had anything to do with Majerus' chastising of the officiating in the Billikins last game?
The way SLU came out running away with this game in the first half. Then Dayton makes it a ballgame and the officials take their turn in the spotlight.

That may have been the ugliest game I have ever seen. We have to be the worst 23-4 team ever and the most inconsistent. I hate to kick em but what was that. Mr Gregory, you call TO to set up plays for London? London how many times are you going to to reset with 8 seconds on the shot clock? How many free throws can we miss? How many offensive put backs did they have in the second half? Mickey Perry what the hell? anyways they will get stomped by rhode island, lose to X and they will have to win their two home games

If I were an opposing coach, and I had Dayton as my next game, I'd vote them into the top 25 and ensure the win.

lilrudy4787 sucks
Check out my predict score. Sorry but I don't know what else to say. We played a mediocre game, and Rick Majerus and his team were up for it. The officiating did suck, and that's the only thing I didn't expect. We actually played better than I thought we would without CJ and RL. It would be nice to see LF play more and get into the flow. We need a shooter.
Regarding storming the court: it's a new arena, and they are college kids; I don't blame them.

Actually it was kind of funny really; I saw one girl crying on the floor like it was Billy Graham revival. I don't think the officiating lost this game (they came close though), but they sure didn't help by blowing a whistle on CW's dunk in the first 2 minutes of the game (effectively taking him out of the game the first half). That was dunk was sick. Only thing sicker was watching that clueless, balding referee calling a charge; what joke. Even the St. Louis announcers thought it should end up on ESPN.
We just didn't have it from the foul line tonight, Marcus didn't have his best game, CJ out, RL out (his non-presence is definitely hurting us - were not the same team without RL, no doubt about it). Just not the effort we need to beat a formidable team on their home court. This isn't a "bad" loss, but we've got some work left to do this season. After last year, even a 25-6 record doesn't feel like an NCAA lock to me.

We lost the total flow in the first half on that ridiculous foul call on the dunk on CW. When he sat the rest of the half and with CJ out, we had no answer on offense. Instead of being able to build a lead at halftime, we had to exhaust energy to get back in the game. Our typical persona is to hit our second wind in the last ten minutes, instead tonight we had nothing.

Pounding it inside (to KH at least) was the worst thing we could do.
Here are 2 typical possessions when we are obsessed w/ getting him the ball.
1.) KH gets the ball with about 20 seconds on the shot clock. He dribbles and does nothing for 8 seconds and gets the ball back up top to LW (who can't do anything w/ it) who then gets it over to CW/CL who flop in to the lane and hope for a foul.
2.) KH gets the ball and makes a good move and misses the easy bunny.
The WORST half court offensive team I've seen in awhile at UD.
HOWEVER, this isn't a bad loss. On the road @ SLU who has 16 wins and we were w/ out CJ (and RL, but that doesn't matter now). I was proud of the guys effort, but a terrible job of executing. This loss won't hurt us. If we win the 2 at home and lose the 2 on the road we will be in.
I am scared to see what would happen if we drop 4 of the last 5 overall. Don't want to find out.

Unfortunately, they're just not a top 25 team that we all want them to be.
They have too many defiences.
Offense: How times this year have failed to score to 50 points in a game? 3
FT Shooting: 66.8%
FG Shooting: 42.7%
3FG Shooting: 32.5%
Just numbers that probably make them one of the top 35 teams in the country...not the top 25.
Generally, as good as they are defensively, they are that bad offensively.

Whatever happened to the half court trap and the zone defense. Even BG said it worked well. So we do not use it in a game when we are in foul trouble?
That is the problem with ST. He can play against the slower guards, like the
XU guy, but the quicker guards present a problem for him on defense.

He got beat consistently by the XU PGs.
Unfortunately, he's a defensive liability.

I think what happened tonight was that a pretty solid team actually stuck to a gameplan against us. Normally, when teams play us ugly or pack it in, we can count on some transition points or some TO's to make up for our deficiencies in a halfcourt set. Tonight i feel like we barely got a transition point. I also think CJ is our smartest player, and we really missed him. We just didn't have all our bullets in the chamber tonight.
But i don't think that means that they didn't try or that they sucked. We just didn't get some breaks (CW's bad fouls in the first half), and didn't take advantage of the freebies. Meanwhile, they took care of the ball. They were patient on offense. They hustled back on defense. And they hit some timely shots. Oh, and they had 10k fans pulling for them.
It's not the end of the world. We'll bounce back. I think if we bring our D to URI we can win that one. They don't defend like SLU does. And they like to run. Both are good signs for us.

People on here need to make up their minds about KH.
Everyone wants to defend him by saying..."His effectiveness can't be seen in the box score"...but every time he has a game where he has decent stats they want to say that he played well. Make up your mind. Even w/ 7 rebounds it isn't like he was the king of the court out there!
I, for one, can't understand why ANY coach would have him and LF on the floor at the same time. It boggles my mind!!!!

IMO, sitting in the 3rd row, there were a few critical plays/moments in the game.
1 - CW charge 2 minutes into the game. I was 25 feet from it. Terrible call, 2nd foul, changed the entire 1st half outlook. If this call goes the other way, I think the flow of the game is so much different
2 - the 3 or 4 times in the 2nd hald when UD played great D for 30 seconds, had great block outs, but failed to go after the ball and secure the rebound(s)
3 - Free throws

When are some of these "fans" going to get it! This team is where they're at because of their defense and rebounding. London Warren is this team's best defender. That is why he is the starting point guard. Thomas cannot keep the guy he's defending in front of him, London can. Thus, London gets most of the minutes. One poster suggested going to zone. Did anyone watch the Charlotte game? What happened when this team (or most teams for that matter) go to zone? They don't rebound. Again, if this team does not play defense or rebound, they don't win games. Why some of these "fans" are so hung up on the mythical top 25 is beyond me. The top 25 is meaningless. It has no say whether you are picked on selection sunday.
I once believed UD fans were knowledgable basketball fans. Coming to this board after a loss now has me rethinking this. They're sure quite a bunch of basketball morons that flood this board after a loss. Flame away children, and keep telling us all who sucks, who isn't a division 1 basketball player and what you would do if you were the coach. Obviously, we all know more about basketball then the head coach, who btw has won more then 65% of his basketball games. Just a thought, I suggest one needs to take an IQ test before becoming a member of this board. That should weed out many of the "knowledgable" posters that flood this board after a rare loss.

Funny you mentioned zone, I was wondering if it was illegal at Dayton. When we need some points and the other team packs it in why not put in Luke and ST and anyone else who can actually make a 3? We may have to go zone while they are in but at least it gives us a chance to score. Sorry if my IQ doesn't equal yours but I'll compare my score with yours any day.

My impressions from St Louis.
The Good- Defense, Rebounding, Offensive Rebounding.
The Bad- Foul Trouble. I think 4 starters had 2 fouls by the half. The guard play was plain bad. Time Mgt- I think we had 3 shot clock violations. 2 times I remember Coach Gregory jumpimg up and down trying to get the attention of the gaurds to shoot.
The Ugly- Free throw shooting. Officiating both teams had bad calls. The St Louis fan next to me in the second half commented there wasn't two possesions in a row without a foul being called. FG %- Just look at the box score.

You must have missed the Charlotte game. Let's play Luke and ST just so we can maybe make a few threes and then let's see how many points we give up in the meantime, while we sacrifice defensive rebounding. So, in essence, let's take away our two strengths, defense and rebounding, just so we can attempt a few threes, probably our biggest weakness. Let's go away from what has won us 23 games. Brilliant!
In regards to your IQ...I've read enough of your posts to know that if there was a test, you wouldn't be on this board. But keep thinking highly of yourself, I'm sure you're a real smart fella.

Hey Anthony,
Just saw your post. I've been busy coaching my two teams to first place finishes. I'm no BG in any sense but I'll be happy to take that test with you. Have you ever played or coached? Just wondering how my posts have been out of line. Please let me know the posts that are wrong (please don't include the CW backboard pass).
