Northeastern thread

Saw in the Dayton pre-game notes that Jenna Giacone's sister Gabby plays/starts for Northeastern.

In case you hadn't noticed Northeastern beat Fordham by 4 points, they rebound extremely well and are good free throw shooters so this should be a very tough game. Reminds me of a Quinnipiac (not quite as good), they were an unfamiliar foe to many came in here and won. Hope the same thing does not happen this time but this is not a Colgate.

I feel like I'm watching the men in the first half last night. No one other than Scaife interested in defense or rebounding. And now the bonehead play of the year by Fowler, standing there with the ball raised out to the defender while she looks to the bench for what? Easy steal for the defender.

22 points given up in the first quarter. We have a deep team of mediocre recruits. Scaife is the only good player. Even Cannatelli and Chandler are so one dimensional that they add little. Chandler with 3 turnovers that quarter

Losing 41 to 34 at half. We look horrible. 6 points given up on fouls with the shot clock at 4 or less. We aren't using our height.

Hopefully a different team the second half. Northeastern was .500 last two years. Everything they put up seemed to go in.

Lets go Flyers!

Actually NE is shooting only 40% to our 48%. We have given up 6 offensive rebounds and committed 8 turnovers, and those 8 extra shots for NE are the 7 point lead.

Our players are so slow and lackadaisical playing defense, rebounding and going for loose balls we cannot overcome our lack of talent.

An 84-79 loss in OT to a decent team, but not one this program should lose to. It will be a long year. Scaife an excellent player. Whitehead is good for a freshman. Chandler has her moments but she is so slow on both ends.

Cannatelli is now 6-29 from the field and 6-26 from the three. She gives us below average defense and nothing in terms of play making or running the offense. We had our best stretch in the second half when she left and we made an 8-0 run. She came back in and we gave up five straight points. Coincidence? Probably not. Hard to bench a senior starter, but if Green is realistic, she has to sit. In four years she has learned nothing but to sit at the three point line. Exhibit A, three two pointers taken in three games.

A loss in OT to a team that had 3 big players fouled out by end of regulation. That was the saddest part...

Flyers got out-hustled in the first half. Norheastern went hard after every ball, every time and controlled the pace most of the game. When the Flyers upped the tempo, N'eastern had difficulty keeping up, but once there was a little breathing room, Flyers slowed down the pace and paid the price. FT shooting was not great (23-32, 72%) and they needed every one of those 9 missed. Nobody really seemed to be clicking tonight, although Jayla Scaife did have 19 pts.

One bright spot was Kyla Whitehead, who got some key rebounds, went 8-10 from the stripe, and turned in her first double-double as a Flyer.

Really missing Jenna Burdette's court vision and JaVonna Layfield's intensity this year.

I disagree, the problem is our point guard play. They don't move with any urgency, they don't look for our wings very well, they turn the ball over way too much and they don't penetrate well.

Lauren did not work to get open today, Chandler took too many outside shots, and Jayla was called for some horrible fouls. The officiating was not good, too many missed traveling calls and that 23 lowered her shoulder every time she made an inside move.

One thing I can say is Shauna was not happy after the game. That team was well coached and positive. They hustled and earned that W. Got to give that point guard credit because she was a heck of a player.

Time to bounce back and work hard in practice and get thru our normal early season struggles.

Go Flyers

Red alert..We have lots of problems and it starts with defense which we are not any good at. Yes at the guard spot we let one kid light us up for 31 in our own gym. But we aren’t getting much help inside. Wilmouth is unbelievable in her regression. 7 minutes...7.... four fouls- no points. She is in record pace for fouls per minute. Lauren is only a spot up shooter. Others need to drive and dish to her. She can’t get her own shot. Ward.. pretty obvious why Butler let her go.... Desmond Adadigi comes to mind.

Again the score is not indicative of the way we played. We were always behind. We got out hustled, out rebounded, out assisted, out turnovered, out stolen. At home, and not against number 10 Maryland!!! Need to consider some serious changes before the year gets away from us. Whitehead should start over Wilmouth. Lauren’s playing too many minutes, especially since she is not able on defense.

Agree with the shoulder dropping when driving. There was also a couple of players that pushed off when driving to the basket and was never called. They just didn't use there forearm but extended their non-dribbling arm out in front, thus pushing our player away to get their shot off. Refs missed a traveling call on us that was so obvious, but there was also a a couple of no foul calls where our player ended up on the floor with the "foul"

Agree with the OT statement. I too thought with 3 of their players out, we should have taken advantage of it.

I believe Kyla Whitehead can develop into a Layfield like player. She seems to want the ball and goes after rebound more aggressively than anyone else. I hope she watches film of Layfield.
BTW, I was told yesterday that Javonna is now in Greece playing with Sam MacKay!!

Not only did we not take advantage of their 3 starters out of the game in overtime, we let their Giacone play about 7 minutes with 4 fouls guarding Chandler in the post. We did not get Chandler the ball enough, and when we did Chandler did her best not to go into Giacone and draw a foul. In the meantime Giacone scored 9 points in that fourth quarter stretch before fouling out.

Trying to find bright spots from Saturday is not easy other than what I hope is the emergence of Whitehead. I'd like to see Julia work inside more, she can be effective. Lauren looks like her confidence has been dented and taken out of the game late in the fourth quarter sent some type of a message to her. Only FOUR turnovers for Northeastern, have to look at the defensive intensity there as well as all of the offensive rebounds they had. A 5'5 player had double digit rebounds. Ugh! Of course just hit some free throws and they win which covers up some of this. It won't get any easier with McIntyre and Toledo coming to town as they polished off Duquesne in double digits yesterday. I will say the point guard position is now a work in progress, I look for it to improve. I do see regression in Jordan, no idea why but Whitehead may eventually if not soon take over her spot in the starting lineup. And yes when someone has four fouls and plays a lengthy time in the fourth quarter (Gabby Giacone) that person needs to be challenged more defensively.

When?

If rebounding continues weak, when do we try Amari Davidson? Per UD statistics today, she has not played yet. Does the coach plan to redshirt her this year or is she injured?

We seem to b getting good minutes out of Whitehead, so when do we try Davidson?

My question would be on Ella Skeens. Of the three recruits I was led to believe she was the best. With getting so little from our forwards and Canatelli will she be thrown into the mix? Coach said she can really shoot it, but was that just coachspeak for, at this time she lacks all the other skills.

We were in need of a shooter late in this game and if Skeens can shoot it, why wasn't she in there? Davidson is a big body we could have used to offset the foul trouble that Chandler and Wilmoth found themselves in and she may have been able to use her frame on Giacone?

If Skeens and Davidson are just lacking in some development aspects, I would rather they redshirt and get the year under their belt. Let them come back as freshmen next season and add into the mix with Whalen and the two recruits. I don't like it when we use them for a few minutes here or there over the course of a season. Why recruit them if we aren't going to use them or develop them? We are deep enough that we can let them redshirt IMHO.

Go Flyers!
