FWIW, I'm thinking (based on AM History) that last ship may be saved for a transfer next year or a player he really wants. The next two years minutes are hard to come by. That would leave 4 ships for players now entering their Junior year of HS. Of course all things can change with our own transfers & injuries. However, I am so excited about this year that I trust whatever AM does.

Gaston appears on paper to be a good player. Personally, I'm not a fan of sit-one/play-one additions. I don't even care for the Ryan Bass stop-gap type of player. He was lost in our offense.
The same issue rears it's head with all of them. That is the challenge of fusing personalities and talents in such a short time. To me it smacks of desperation to fill a significant void. Ryan could have really helped us, but the challenge of making it all work for one season is steep.
And while concussions are really serious like Ryan apparently had, ANY injury that keeps a guy out for weeks just makes the marriage exponentially more risky.
Archie probably would have made it work with Gaston like he always seems to, but it would impact Big Steve's development to some degree.

I wonder if other coaches are starting to pick up on AM's philosophy, or if maybe this is now standard protocol and I'm just slow on the uptake. He seems to take the attitude that 12 scholarships is too many. So he always seems to have one in his back pocket in case a game-changer becomes available.
The math seems like it would be something like this: given 11 scholarship players, offering a 12th to a marginal player typically adds / subtracts "+/- 5%" to the team depending on the player. A game changer adds 20% to the team, with a 25% chance of happening, making it a +5% expected outcome. So always hold the scholarship.

Ryan Mikesell is NOT on a baseball scholarship. It hasn't even been determined if he will play both in college. My bet is that he does.

Any baseball scouts think he has big league stuff? I know he was throwing no hitters in high school, but that's kind of like averaging 25 points a game in high school. Doesn't really predict success at the next level, so just wondering if he's caught the eye of scouts at all.

I know that any time you have a kid that is 6'6-6'7 and has the skill to no-hit high school opponents you are probably going to get a few looks from scouts. Like most sports its all about projection and the bigger the frame and body the higher you project, especially in baseball. That being said I have no idea how hard the kid throws or if his no hitters were against D1 competition or D4, which tends to make a difference.

Pitching prospects better throw 90+ and have wicked junk. . . or be able to hit a ball into the next county.
I played with guys that you could barely see the ball when they threw it and they were outfielders in college because the faster you throw it the harder they'll hit it. And, I played with guys that no-hit teams but couldn't crack 90. They never made it out of double-A.

Rare to excell at two sports in this era.
A 98 mph fastball without location and movement goes out of the park at 105mph. It happened to the Dodgers last night. The batter Charinos didn't even see the first one that was pitched, hit the second one over the fence for a walk-off.
These major league hitters can time a b-b if you give them enough looks and the ball has no movement.
There is virtually year-round preparation in any sport these days. The sports have become very technical and require incredible focus. Not many athletes can play their best while taking on two sports at once. That's why Romo put the golf clubs away.
Mikesell will be a great player for us if he concentrates on basketball.

If he is on a basketball scholarship, I think we should encourage him to only play basketball. For some reason, if he decides to play both...let's hope he is the next Pat Cannaughton

Growing up we played 3 sports typically. At least 1 was just because we wanted something else to compete in. Today's kids -- no exaggeration -- have year-round personal trainers in early middle school and play their sport year round. It's unhealthy, and in my opinion, unnatural for the developing bodies of these kids.

Wasn't commenting on how many Dayton has open, just updating Gazoo's point about not using 12 to keep one available. Dayton right now has 12, with one open.
As noted Mikesell is not on a baseball scholarship. Even if they gave him a baseball scholarship he would count against the 13 limit because he was a recruited basketball player.

He has been given Archie's blessing to play both sports. He just won't play baseball until after the basketball season is over.

I would skip baseball. Ryan needs to hit the weight room and put on 30 pounds of muscle to compete in the paint. He certainly can make his own decisions, but if he doesn't increase his strength, he will be collecting splinters in his butt for four years.

When you grow up in a small town that expects their best athletes to play all sports, you grow up thinking you can do anything. Once he sets foot on the playing court and sees who he's up against for playing time, I expect reality to set in and baseball to become a hobby.

I either heard or read (don't ask me which) that Ryan said he would only play baseball if he is told he has a real shot at the major leagues.

It is not healthy. Kind of a sad state of affairs really. In Texas if a large school kid doesn't focus on one sport year round, he can be left behind very early. My grandson just graduated from 8th grade and runs a 11.3 100meters. The football coach won't let him play baseball. It's track and football---or else it will be the end of the football bench. It is what it is. Shame really.
Can't wait to see what Ryan has on the b-ball floor though. Sounds like a really solid kid.

I don't think the Big East is going to anywhere close to the second rated conference next year. Seton Hall, St Johns, and DePaul will all be terrible out of conference. I'm not sure that Creighton will be all that great either. Potentially four anchors in a 10 team league is going to kill their RPI. Let's see how high and mighty the BE fans are after next year...

Inevitable mediocrity at the bottom and middle of that league. Those teams used to have a bigger recruiting advantage when the BE was the Old Big East, and Creighton used to win their league to get a ticket to the Big Dance. I think it will take some years to hit it's new steady state though.

Chukwu committed to Syracuse. Interesting transfer I think. He'll probably be really good anchoring the middle of that 2-3 zone.
I'll be surprised if UD uses the remaining scholarship for this season. Unless a can't-miss guy reay wants to come to UD, we'll probably save it for 2016.

I agree Brian. For many years I was envious of other programs that regularly snagged good recruits and transfers. Now I'm content that we have our share of quality players and we can only sign a finite few. Plus we can be picky. Life is good.

Same here. With all the fresh blood coming in next year, minutes will be hard to come by. And since it'd seem that any last-minute signee would be a "scratch-n-dent" model anyway, might as well wait another year at this point.

It is difficult to have an obvious upgrade over any of the starters or major contributors and that is the only reason to do it at this point, so I agree it would be strange to see anyone signed at this point. I am really excited to see this new group!

LOL I've never heard of a recruit being referred to as a SCRATCH AND DENT model but I like the analogy!

Although Vee and Jordan were attractive targets to many teams as transfers, and they undeniably led us to a higher level, it appears that Josh is coming in with far greater established credentials simply because Jordan and Vee never got the chance at GU and tOSU.
Josh has the resume' to really hit the ground running.

Here's another possible name: Elijah Bryant, 6'4" 225 lb guard transferring from Elon. Averaged about 14 ppg past year. Don't know his interest level in UD but I guess we offered.

Hmm, 6'4", 225 lbs. That could present problems for opposing defenses. And if I understand the tweets correctly he was the CAA rookie of the year?
Impressive.

Supposedly Bryant is LDS and BYU wants him so that's the most likely destination for him I think...

DDN says Archie going to Charlotte, Atlanta & August for recruiting -- speculates Elijah Bryant one of the targets. He has offers from BYU, Miami, Dayton, Texas A&M and Butler. Looks like a sharp kid -- plans to major in Biology & Chemistry. He may have verballed to Samford before doing a year of prep school in NH.
This is a live evaluation period for Division I men’s coaches. They can scout potential recruits in person from Wednesday through Sunday and again from July 15-19 and from July 22-26.
here's more -- family came to games at Elon. Maybe BYU too far away? Not that Dayton is close.

I believe the first Morman temple ever built is in Kirtland Ohio, outside Cleveland, so we've got that going for us . . .

I am not so sure I would play that one up to big. Google Jeffrey Lundgren.

Elijah Bryant visited Butler today and left without signing. Can Archie pull of another recruiting coup?

Technically I believe it's a consecutive wife sentence. Can any lawyers on here confirm?

I am a semi retired lawyer in NJ and you all are treading in dangerous waters. "A happy wife, is a happy life" does not mean that you will be three times as happy if you have three wives. All I know is that, if I murdered someone, I would be back out on the street, quicker than a "wife sentence."

If you have 3 wives and 1 is happy, odds are that the other 2 are p!ssed off. So with 2 p!ssed off wives, your life is twice as bad as when you have 1 p!ssed off wife.

If the next two or three or four were as awesome as my first, current and only wife, I would love to have more than one! Lucky guy here, people probably look at her and think what the heck you doing with him, but after 22 years it just keeps getting better all the time.

The key to a happy marriage is making it clear from Day 1 of dating that it's her job to keep you happy. As long as you choose wisely and can do that, as I have, I can say from experience life is easy. Add another wife or two with the same training/attitude would only make things easier.
Yes, I'm being cereal.

Recently attended a 60th wedding anniversary and asked the happy groom just what he attributed his success with the same wife for all these years....he replied, " I say the same three words to my wife every day", aah I quipped, "I love you does go a long way". Nope he quipped back....he replied "Yes dear, you're right"

Well can I give Rollo half a thank? Rollo is half right. It is also my job to make her happy everyday.
No matter how many obstacles, curve balls, and bad attitude idiots either one of us come across throughout the day, we always try to pick the other one up. And trust me when I say, the benefits of a happy wife happy life can not be beat, and she says the same about me.
Geeze, enough of this mushy ****, lets talk hoops!

It helps my case and cause to acknowledge that as King, I not only own a guillotine but know how to use it.
But I'm better with and would much rather use my God-given impaler!

Looks like "the most interesting man in Sault Ste. Marie" is staying in Canada. He got a look from Dayton coaches at one point. See page 2, posts 187-197.
@hoopstarscanada 6'11" c Jonah Fogg (Sault Ste. Marie, ON/Korah) has committed to coach Rod Gilpin & the @BishopsGaiters. Strong add for @GaiterHoops. #CIS

Elijah Bryant taking a visit to Miami (FL) this weekend. Butler, Dayton, and BYU also very involved for '14-'15 CAA Rookie of the Year.

@GoodmanESPN: BYU just picked up Elon transfer Elijah Bryant. Averaged 14 points per game as a freshman.
