Ryerson (Exhibition) Game Thread
Finally... It's been a long 7 months... But the season is finally here (exhibition wise), this weekend.
Ryerson does look like it has a solid trio of guards; Jahmal Jones (6'0" JR), Jordon Gauthier (6'3" JR) and Aaron Best (6'4" SO)

I have some friends from the great white north who follow both Canadian and American college basketball. From what they had to say, they are decent when it comes to Canadian basketball, but they should be handled fairly easily by the Flyers. As mentioned before, they have 3 decent guards that lead their team. But after that, they really lack in the size, strength, and athleticism as compared to the Flyers. This is a team, like Findlay, that really depends on playing smart, fundamentally sound basketball.

Here is the article to their "game" with Wisconsin in Aug. For Wisconsin this was a trip similar to the Women going to France this summer and the Men on their tour of Europe last summer. Wisconsin was able to put up 84 (when was the last time they scored 84 in a game) against them on only 10 days of practice. Ryerson did have a kid score 24 in the game.

I really don't know what this tells us. Ryerson was without 4 players due to injury. Does this mean with those 4 players it would have been a closer than 21 point game?

Devon suspended for both Exh. Games
John Bedell @john_bedell 10m
UD: Devon Scott will not play in either exhibition game "as a result of a violation of team rules." #Flyers
John Bedell @john_bedell 7m
University says "no other info will be made available" regarding Scott being held out of ex. games against Ryerson and Findlay.

Well, they cut the Piit/Navy football audio...now if they can just find the UD/Ryerson sound we'll be all good.

On the A-10 schedule they have 2 listings for this game--one has the video and the other only the WHIO radio audio. The audio is way ahead of the video.

Well "live stats" on DaytonFlyers.com show score is 1-0 Ryerson.
Hope this is not a sign of things to come with live stats, video/audio feeds, etc screwed up already

Really impressed with Robinson. If that kid could jump, he would be unstoppable.
Everyone looks pretty darn good outside of Alex G. That tells me this team is better than the last two years, when Alex had to play. Not this year.

Some observations from the 1st half:
I love the way Jordan Sibert takes the ball to the whole STRONG. He has had some very good passes too. Looks very good.
Jalen Robinson is light years ahead of #35 on the offensive side of the floor.
Scoochie looks like the main guy at Point. He looks pretty poised for a frosh. Loved the pass to a cutting Devin Oliver for the layup, not sure how he saw him. Good vision. Looks like the Point is in good hands for the next 4 yrs.
Vee is solid and is playing like the team leader. Feel like he is the best player on the court right now, followed closely by Sibert.
This team looks like it will have no problem scoring. Can't get much of an opinion on the defensive side of the floor playing a team like this. We'll just have to wait and see on that.

Once Schoochie gets his shot going, he will bypass Dillard like a blur (and already has on D).

Unlike last several years this team can score from anywhere on the court and go 2 deep without a drop off. Sibert is a big time player. Schoochie is very under control. It's so nice to see a pg handle the ball and pass without forcing things. The ball movement was exceptional. This will be the biggest difference. We don't have a ball stopper on offense like Diilard.

Ups and downs. Arch also played a lot of different combinations. More depth and hopefully improved defense will be key. Pierre far and away the player on the team.

Yes - they were calling the hand check when checking the dribbler. Will take some adjustment but the players were catching on by the second half. Will remain to be seen if they continue to call it throughout the season.

Enjoyed the game, despite the lopsided score. Since when does Alex Gav shoot 3s? It was a lovely arching shot, ala Luuuke. I don't remember him doing that before.
Scoochie looks very good and DO did well. Is Vonderhaar hurt? Did not dress for game. New walk-on, Bobby Wehrli, scored toward the end. I like to see that.
Of course, there were mistakes and some missed FTs, but overall I was happy with this first game.

Box Score
http://daytonflyers.com/boxscore.asp...76&path=mbball
As expected in an exhibition, minutes were spread around. No one played more than 28 minutes and every scholarship player that played had at least 10 minutes except for Alex G.

Bucky was really optimistic before the game started about the team overall, Sibert, Pierre and Scoochie. I trust his opinion and he is usually more guarded. He also said this is the hardest working team he has seen in a while which is another good sign.

Price played well also. Solid at both ends. Flyers missed a ton of bunnies in the 2nd half. They really moved the ball well and got good looks just didn't convert.

I did. And I still stand by that. Check the numbers, because I already have.
He went 2-4, which is way better than his career average, and the 2 he hit was from straight away, and the 2 he missed was from the side. Maybe the top of the arc is his spot for 3s, but I still don't think he should take that shot.

He went 2-4, which is way better than his career average, and the 2 he hit was from straight away, and the 2 he missed was from the side. Maybe the top of the arc is his spot for 3s, but I still don't think he should take that shot.

DO said that he has made more than 20 in a row while practicing. He just needs to do it during the game. But, it is also possible that he has certain spots that he can shoot much better from.

I missed the game, but did I see that Sanford played point guard at some point?
Wondering if we ever got Sanford, Sibert, Pierre on the floor at the same time and how the offense flowed. Although it looks like Smith is going to be great running the point.
Looks like Kavs and Robinson were on the floor together - did Robinson play both PF and C in the game?

Archie tried a lot of different combinations. Sanford/Sibert played together at the guard spots in both halves

So, what you are essentially saying is because he had a low percentage last year he can't improve his shot. I disagree. He looked far more comfortable with his shot. I can see him shooting 35-37% range from the three.

Dude, we are gonna watch DO on ESPN this year, not ESPN Classic or the History Channel. Lets look ahead, not behind us.
Sure hoping my optimism is justified and your numbers mean nothing for DO this season.
And when I posted my optimistic sarcastic comment about DO shooting the 3, he was 2 for 2, which last time I checked was 100%.

Last year? He's had a low percentage his entire time on the squad. It has improved from year to year, though. 16% to 21% to 28% for a career average of 23%. Maybe he can continue to improve his shot, but I still don't think it's worthwhile as we have others that should be taking the shot. Personally, I don't see him hitting the 35-37% mark from 3 point range. But, we can watch the season play out.

DO looked like a man out there. The transformation for that skinny and timid string bean as a freshman and that sickly (with mono) sophomore year to this muscular determined stud is just awesome. I'm expecting big things from him this year.

I've been hearing for the past 3 years (from DDN articles and interviews with Archie and Devon) that DO is very good at hitting shots at 3 point range in practice. I also suspect that he will be improved in shooting 3's this year as he is stronger and more confident.
I hope we're right, Jumpin Joe.
