Lightbulb Freshman Scoring Record for Obi?

SEASON G PTS AVG
1 Tony Stanley 1997-98 33 431 13.1
2 Johnny Davis 1973-74 29 415 14.3
3 Keith Waleskowski 2000-01 34 385 11.3
4 Roosevelt Chapman 1980-81 29 370 12.8
5 Obi Toppin 2018-19 26 359 13.8
6 Jim Paxson 1975-76 27 353 13.1

Obi moved ahead of Jim Paxson last night while playing 1 fewer games.
He should move ahead of Velvet on Saturday in 2 fewer games and likely KW on Tuesday in 6 fewer games.
If Obi can average 19pts in the next 3 games (not likely) he would tie Johnny Davis in points and average. More likely, he'll pass Davis at Duquesne.
Needing 72pts (12pts/game) to tie Tony Stanley, Obi is projected to take over the #1 spot in Brooklyn.

Scoring Average by month:
Nov 11 (7 games)
Dec 16.2 (6 games)
Jan 12 (8 games)
Feb 17.8 (5 games)

Obi has got a bunch of records coming.

As you mention, he's #6 for points as a freshman at 369.

He is currently #1 in field goal accuracy as a freshman at .673, which also puts him at #3 for field goal accuracy in a season. Finn at .707, and Daniels at .688 as #1/#2.

At 13.81, he is currently #2 in average points per game as a freshman. Johnny Davis #1 at 14.31.

He's #7 as highest block shot average as a freshman at .85. #4 in blocks as a freshman at 22. Big Steve is #1 at 55, Ashman at 33, Kanieski at 25.

He is #3 as field goals made as a freshman at 152. 2 shy of Stanley, 21 shy of Johnny Davis at #1.

He is #14 at most rebounds as a freshman at 135. With a 5.2 average overall, and 5 regular season, and 1 guaranteed game going, that would put him around 165, which would slot him at #10. Chapman at #9 at 169, Chris Johnson at 177 is #8, and Hall and McElvene tied at #6 for 179. #5 is Hare at 199, a bit of a reach.

Best part of Obi: willing passer of the basketball. As great an athlete as he is, guys like him fall into the Rucker Park/And-1 Mix Tape trap way too often. He doesnt. For the most part if a teammate has a better shot, Obi will give the ball up. Throwing it low to Toppin is NOT like the ball going into the proverbial abyss.

Very good team player. But I would say his teammates share this trait. They all share well and are not out there just looking to get theirs. Last couple seasons I didnt honestly feel that way about everybody. Whether thats just changing faces or Grant's fingers, I dont know. Probably a combination.

Have a feeling this team wants to cut the balls off SLU this weekend for what they did to us a cpl weeks ago. Remember the Chaifetz!

When it comes to Obi I want my cake and eat it too. 2 more years, then he's drafted as a top 5 pick. He'll be remembered as one of our most sincerely good guys and one of if not the best Flyer ever to wear the UD uni. We deserve it dam_ it.

Obi's teammates are looking for a lob to him on almost every offensive play. That is very unselfish play. Very different than Staten who never threw a lob to Chris Wright.

Not sure you could see it on TV, but Davidson, especially in the second half was not only double teaming Obi when he got the ball, but many times when the guard with the ball even looked at Obi. His defender played behind him, and someone else would then front him. Pick your poison, as that often left Josh open or with an overmatched defender.

I love how Obi reacts to the double team when he gets the ball. He passes or moves right now. Cunningham sometimes will freeze and get trapped.

Fun Fact of the Day:

Obi is 3rd in the nation in overall FG percentage, but 2nd on the team in 2-pt FG percentage.

According to KenPom, Mikesell is 10th in the country in 2pt-FG percentage (71.4%) and Obi is 27th (67.9%).

As a team, UD is 2nd in the nation in 2-pt FG% (59.2%), behind only Gonzaga. Duke is 3rd.

that's okay, we're past that but I thought the same thing.... its allright... much like the name I am going to write: this is just a test.. should your local television or radio state this name, listen for instructions from the emergency UD Flyer network... once again, this is just a test: Trent Meachum........)

It's technically 13.06, but rounded to 13.1.

Can Obi put up 26 vs Rhody on Friday to tie Davis in the same number of games (29)?
A tall order, but obtainable.

The rankings are for overall points, not average points per game.

I'm guessing that is your confusion.

Some odd facts regarding Obi's current point total...

Since 1949-50, there have been 329 Dayton Flyers that have scored at least 1 point.

With 389 points, Obi Toppin is #143 on the list, so he is already in the top half of all Dayton Flyer scorers.

Tied with Obi Toppin with 389 points, is Devin Searcy.

Dang, Obi is good. Soak it in people. He has some outside game, a ton of inside game, a good handle, is unselfish and has a penchant for the spectacular. If he sticks around for a long time, he will probably threaten a lot of Flyer records. He is on track to be a great.

Now, I look at the guys around him and, in my opinion, Jalen Crutcher is another top notch player (Reminds me of Ramod). He is here for another two years. So, right there, you have two guys who are competing for all-A10 honors for the next two years, IMO. Two players who are that good is a great nucleus. We have other good parts, but if we get lucky enough to have someone else blow up, we will be absolutely formidable. I agree that we could use another perimeter threat, but am most excited about having the depth and size to allow us to play bully-ball when we need to. There have been a few games this year, where I felt we got bullied, physically. That tends to happen against the top 30 type teams, but even lesser teams that have physicality have been a bad match-up for us this year. It might be only a few games per year, but those are the games that matter the most when you talk about post-season success.

If Big Steve were still alive, I have my doubts that he would have been at UD all 4 years; I think he would have left at some point to the draft.

But for fun sakes, man, Big Steve at the 5, Cunningham at the 4, Kostas and Obi filling in off the bench..... or whatever combination.... wow.

The number of quality bigs who we have had on the roster in recent years is eye-opening. We went for long periods of time in past decades without much success with big men.

Was trying to think of who Jalen was like. Somebody said it!
Ramod Marshall. Good call on that.

Jalen will end up with better numbers, better player. But the style and attitude are similar

Maybe I'm thinking of someone else, but Ramod was good, not great. Few turnovers, but if there was a hint of traffic the ball didn't leave his hands. Would have loved to see him take a few more chances with his passes. Yeah, he would have had more turnovers, but also more assists.

I always thought Ramod was a better 2 guard than a point guard. He played a bit out of position out of necessity.

I know Obi isn't going to break Big Steve's block record but I thought this would be a good place for this post. I just watched the first half of the UMass game on DVR last night (was there live on Tuesday) and Obi had three clear blocked shots. I didn't rewatch the second half yet but I know he had at least one more in that half. Yet the box score still only has him listed as having one block for the game. Who is in charge of keeping stats? Home team? League? Does a team have a way to contest stats, especially with video evidence?

Not to put any more worry into Flyer fans minds than is already there about Obi leaving school, but interesting the kid at NC State is turning pro. Sacha Jones played very little two years at KY. He then transfers and is sitting out this year at NC St. Now he announces he will turn pro. A draft pick, I doubt it, but he wants to go that direction after three college years of nothing. Personally I think that Obi will know he needs another year, and that he can be part of a special team next year, so he will return.

Obi is now #1 for average points per game as a freshman. This one is fluid as he has games remaining.

But, Obi is now #1 in field goals made as a freshman with 175, passing Johnny Davis who had 173.

I honestly never thought Obi would tie Davis in the same number of games.
Give him the ball!

To be up there at #2 with 2 games left and likely all time leader ...those names^....shm. Johnny Davis was just a legend and maybe the best I had ever seen prior to Obi.

If it weren't Senior Night, I believe Obi would be #1 today. Josh got some "garbage time" points that would have been highlight real moments for Obi.
Would have been nice to have it happen at home, but glad I'm going to Pittsburgh on Saturday to see Obi claim the crown.

He would have to average over 23 points per game to beat Finkel.

I was a little disappointed that they didn't stop the game or make an announcement when he broke the record. Clearly the public address guy had no sense of history.
