20-21 6th Man
Any early ideas for who may work into this year’s Ibi Watson? While he may not be the first guy in off the bench, I am looking for Zimi to fill that role for this year’s team.

Zimi is the player I was going to say when I opened the thread. Looks like you already answered your own question though.
With him having a semester of experience last year he should be ahead of the other freshman.

My guess is either Chase or Moulaye, with Jordy starting.

I personally like Ibi as the sixth man. Instant offense.

Grant seems to like as much experience as possible when putting the starting 5 on the floor (and he stated Jordy was a key for this team)... so I'm guessing the starting 5 to be:
Jalen
Rodney
Ibi
Chase
Jordy
I would think the 6th man role would be Zimi's, and would be coming in for Jordy (but I'm assuming that Chase could slide over to the 5 and guard a big).
If they think Chase can't handle the big, then Big Mo would be first off the bench.
So first off the bench - Zimi or Mo (cause you know the guards are coming out of the game first).
I think we will see RJ coming in for Ibi, but w/o Cohill - who is the first off the bench to spell Jalen or Rodney... Koby or Luke?

That would have been my first choice, but then I thought about how fragile Chase has been for his whole career, and how they might be managing his minutes closely.
Add in the history of Coach not starting Freshmen and the needle sways back to Chase.

He won't initially start if at all, imo. He's just coming back after really two years off based on his limited play last season and they'll slowly find a niche for him. While I'd like to think he's 100% back physically, emotionally., etc. finding a good spot for him might just be the most important thing. Maybe it's starting or coming into a game.

I think it's gonna by one of the true freshman guards. Not sure who's gonna step up but there's gonna be minutes behind Ibi, Jalen and Rodney

I feel like we know less about the new players than we ever have. They could be great, they could be behind schedule. There seems to be no information on them since they stepped foot on campus. I know there is a pandemic going on, but you think our intrepid sports writers would be getting some insight from the coaches.

Well, could be right, but I'm guessing he starts for a couple reasons. He is most likely to pick up inside points and rebounds to replace some of the loss of Ryan/Trey. But let's remember, last season he was a starter in game 1 and Trey was on the bench. So plans were for him to play the 4 spot last year so it seems natural that he gets it this season to start.

Looked up the roster and I was surprised to see how old the team was, especially considering how many newcomers we have.
https://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/teams/dayton/roster/
Returners:
Jordy - 24 (!)
Ibi - 22
Chatman - 22
Crutcher - 21
Johnson - 21
"Freshmen" Newcomers:
Sissoko - 21 (!)
Zimi - 20
RJ - 20
Frazier - 18?
Brea - 18
I can't imagine we'd end up with a team with a couple of 24-year-olds in 4 years, but it's possible.
Makes sense why talent like Zimi and RJ might be able to help us "reload" vs "rebuild" when you realize they're coming in the same age as most Juniors in college.

This is unchartered territory for us. When this season is over, we will have lost 7 starters in 2 seasons(3 last year, 4 this year). And we will still have a decent age distribution(remembering that Weaver will turn 23 next year in December and 24 the following year.

I don't know if that was by accident or by design, but I love it. A half dozen "Ryan Mikesells" would be ok with me.

JT Again?
I may have missed something. Posters seem to see Jordy T as a starter. I get that you can't coach 6-11, 278. My memories however are of limited offense, and horribly foul prone. I would love to be proven wrong here. Help me?

24, healthy and showed flashes at Nebraska. He's a better player than what he showed last year

This got me thinking. When was the last time, other than Vee, did a senior who came to UD on a basketball scholarship, not start? It's the natural progression of things.
Jordy was the guy who came off the bench when Obi took a breather. He was also the best we had defensively when it came to slowing down talented big offensive opponents.
He will start. The question is how fouls and stamina dictate the amount of minutes he plays.

Fabrizius I think was coming off the bench as a senior
Anymore it seems like anyone who would be in that situation just transfers out

I'm surprised the starting 5 spot has been conceded to Jordy by so many. I know he's 6-11 and a senior and may get the nod early on, but I'm hopeful that Moulaye is hot on his heels and possibly able to take the spot after several games. I suspect he may be more mobile and fit into AG's offensive flow better. He has similar bulk/strength to Jordy to defend good inside opponents. Thoughts?

Doubtful. Jordy transferred from the Big Ten to UD for a reason and I doubt that reason was to finish his career as a low minute bench player. And AG obviously had a plan also. And Moulaye was intentionally red shirted for a reason and that reason was most likely that they couldn't see much use for him on the active roster last season. Doubt he takes that big of step forward in his first year on the court to overtake a player 3 years ahead of him. Don't underestimate what a Junior back up player to a lottery NBA draft pick can do when handed the keys. I'm sure he and AG knew what Jordy needed to do to take over by the time last season was over and that they have been working toward that goal for quite awhile.
Remember the difference between D. Davis junior year as a 2nd stringer and what he became as a starter his senior year. I expect the same thing with Jordy.

Jordy is 24 and has 4 years of college basketball experience. I think that has to count for something.
Not knocking Moulaye but he's a redshirt freshman who hasn't seen any game action
There's no telling how much the knee injury Jordy had set him back or bothered him throughout the season
If you go back and look at Jordy's stats at Nebraska he wasn't consistent and struggled with fouls but he had some productive games against good/great competition. I have no inside info but I think that knee injury really set him back last year

Can't overlook that Jordy played almost 10 minutes/game. If nothing else he appeared to be catching on to what constitutes a foul near the end of the season. He left a lot of available playing minutes on the table throughout the season with quick exits due to fouls.
The last two games, against Rhody and GW, he logged 26 minutes with only 3 personal fouls.
He is a lot more mature as a result of the minutes and years he has logged the last 4 years. I know this because his sister Florence told me so.

My selection for 6th Man for 2020-21 is kind of like a Lays Potato Chip: I can’t pick just 1.
- If Jordy gets in foul trouble against a team with capable bigs, then I think Mo could be the first one off the bench (unless CAG decides that the best defense is a good offense, and slides Chase to the 5, forcing other teams to cover thoroughbreds with Clydesdales).
-Zimi could be 6th man, if Chase can’t go 30/game at any point this year.
-RJ could be 6th man, if CAG wants to go uptempo.
One fan’s thoughts. We’ll see how it goes.

Thanks. I think you're right that he's the last Flyer to play at least his Jr. season with us and not become a starter in his senior year.
I did find one who came in as a senior and didn't start. Ryan Bass. He was hurt to begin the season, played a few games and was hurt the rest of the season, but even if he'd have been healthy, I don't see him starting over Scooch, Kyle or Jordan.

Starting lineup will be:
Crutcher
Chatman
Watson
Johnson
Tshimanga
It might change, but I doubt it. Maybe if Cohill hadn't gone down. Starting means absolutely nothing in the box score and Zimi/Moulaye may end up playing more minutes than Jordy, but AG seems to be pretty loyal to his seniors. Call it a sentimental gesture if you must, but I have no doubt that Jordy will start (and Chase).

I would go with the same starters, but there is always that small asterisk behind Chase's name. Fingers crossed for his good health.

That’s how I see it too but I was way off last year so you have that going for you. I also see MS as possibly being first guy off the bench if Jordy keeps fouling as he has shown but still feel like Zimi will fit the spirit of the term 6th man.
