2019-2020 Basketball Predictions

2019-2020 Basketball Predictions

Stopped by Meijers today and saw Lindy's and Athlon college basketball magazines on sale there. Athlon has Dayton making the field of 64 with VCU and Davidson making the field of 32. Lindy's has VCU and Davidson in the field of 32, but Dayton is left out with the potential to make the NCAA tournament.

Put it on sale at Meijers next to the UD paraphernalia. I'm sure it could sell well.

I have a small but successful lawn care side business (15 properties) that basically keeps me and the kids busy all summer. I have a respectable hat, shirt, business cards etc...but am dying to change the logo from this conservative Oakwood style to a new, brash and royally appropriate slogan...but the VP of Operations, aka the Queen, refuses to allow me to print shirts and hats that say “I’m Sexy and I mow it”.

I think we go 11 and two out of conference. We win two out of three in Maui, and split Colorado and St. Mary’s. If we win both of those, I will be ecstatic! That would mean our one loss would more than likely be to Kansas or Michigan State. That’s definitely forgivable. In conference play, I feel like we split the games in Philly, Split VCU, and lose a couple more games during the season. So I think we will have at minimum 14 wins in conference. Therefore I am in agreement with the 25 win minimum. I however will not feel comfortable unless we get to the Atlantic 10 semi‘s.

Pretty solid write-up, if you ignore the typos and little errors that seem to be present in all journalism these days.

I share the author's belief that Toppin, Crutcher, and Mikesell are going to start and the final two are the only mysteries. I'd stretch it to four and include Trey, given his experience, senior-status, rebounding ability and leadership qualities.

Street and Smith

is the college basketball Bible. We must wait for it to see where the Flyers finish in A-10 play.

I went to Barnes & Noble today and purchased Athlon Sports because Obi Toppin's picture was on the cover and they predicted the Flyers to make the field of 64. Every season I always choose the publication which has Dayton advancing the farthest! They say after a stunning debut Toppin must now prepare to be the focus of every opponent. Also, the dunk specialist provided big results at both ends last year and has grown considerably from the skinny kid who arrived on campus a couple years ago!

They were very complimentary of our frontcourt and our backcourt and mentioned the talent of all the newcomers but we just have to hope the players all meet expectations and reach their potential.

20. You heard it here first: the Atlantic 10, coming off arguably its worst season ever, puts four teams into the 2020 NCAA Tournament. The league is much older this year, should have three top-40 teams in VCU, Davidson and Dayton, and the middle will be sturdier.

2019-20 Flyers

will go 24-7 and 15-3 in A-10 play. This should qualify them for an at-large bid to the NCAA.

I think that Dayton will be as successful as our three aircraft carriers are successful. That is, Toppin, Tshimanga and Johnson.

Cunningham is no longer around to take some of the defensive heat off Toppin. This year, Toppin will be every opponents target. He will be double teamed. If he cannot pass out of the double team then Dayton will suffer. If Crutcher can not get Toppin the ball because of double team then the offense will try to chuck up long jump shots.

If Tshimanga plays in a very pedestrian way then Dayton will suffer. It appears that Tshimanga was very pedestrian at Nebraska for two years. If he is not a new man then Dayton hopes will be dimmed.

If Chase Johnson is ruled ineligible for part or all of this upcoming season then Dayton dreams may be thwarted. Dayton needs another BIG option underneath. At the very least, we need his fouls against bigger opponents. He was highly recruited out of high school but has not shown much in college. If he gets hurt again; his health (concussions) could stop his college career. If he could just stay healthy and rebound then the sky is bright.

I am not even counting on Sissoko. The only good thing about a freshman is that eventually, they become a sophomore. I am expecting that like generations of BIGS before him; division 1 will be too fast for him. That deer in the headlights look will be evident. Big opponents will teach him lessons by forcing him into turnovers. Grant may even red-shirt him?

I don’t think our success will hinge on our bigs NEARLY as much as it will hinge on our guard play.

Perimeter defense. Perimeter defense. Perimeter defense. It lost us many games last year (see VCU and Marcus Evans x2).

I certainly agree that our bigs’ play will be a large part of the reason we would beat the Michigan States of the league, however perimeter defense is the key.

Putting pressure on the quarterback (or the guard with the ball) can shut down an offense. I like Chatman to be our Aaron Donald.

Luckily for us Obi showed great skill passing out of double teams last year. It was something Josh was not very good at and AG adjusted as the season went on so that it was Obi getting the ball in the post more than Josh.

Not possible. At the latest he will be eligible after the first semester.

I'm curious how you come up with 24-7. I would think if we go 15-3 in conference we should win more than 24 games, unless you're not counting the A-10 Tourney.

If we go 9-4 in the non-conference we’ll have a very hard time compiling an NCAA profile that gets us in. 4 losses in non-con means either we didn’t beat more than 1 team of any substance or we have 2-4 bad losses.

Only way to recover from that then is if we sweep VCU and Davidson (and they are both tourney teams) and lose to the 4th - 6th place teams in the conference.

I believe this season's success centers around the play Ibi Watson and Chatman.

These are two players that impressed a lot during their redshirt year last year. Chatman will add defense and depth at the guard position. Watson has impressed the staff with his offensive and defensive abilities. If these two live up to their billing, the team could be very strong.

Jordy and Chase could make contributions, but I don't believe either of them lit up the coaches eyes last year as much as Ibi and Rodney.

My bad. Should have been 25-6 overall and 15-3 Conference play.
Conference losses to VCU (home and away) and Davidson (home).
Non-conference losses to Georgia, St Mary's, Colorado.

SeasonTicketFan: I would love to see both Watson and Chatman be major contributors. But if they both start and play the bulk of the minutes at the 2 and 3 spots then Dayton becomes just another smallish team with Toppin at center. Every opponent will double down on Toppin. Push, scrape, pull, bruise and hack Toppin. By the end of the year, Toppin’s edges will be worn down smooth. This scenario, I would consider boring. That is not what I am hoping excitedly for this season.

I would rather see two post players sharing the scrapes underneath kicking the ball out for uncontested open jumpers.

I would be disapointed if we lost to all, or almost all, the "good' teams we play. If this team can't win against the teams you mention then we really don't compete at the national level, and all the talk about the quality of the team is just that, talk.

I see a lot of comments here and there about Obi playing center. Unless there is a major issue with Jordy, Obi will not be playing much center. At least not on offense.
He will need to work on his outside shot, ball handling, etc. Watch the A10 tourny game. Before he got his knee banged it was Obi and Crutcher who were bringing the ball up the floor. I expect that most half court sets will be passes through Obi. Forcing defense to come out and double him (opening up someone,) or allow him to take his shot if they do not come out and double him.
So while Obi will get his dunks on cuts, pick & rolls and put backs, I doubt he will be hanging down under the basket when Crutcher is out dribbling around 3 point line. Or another way, the majority of his offense (50%+) will be beyond 5 feet from the basket. That is what he needs to develop for the NBA and I believe Grant is more than happy to put those skills to work. Jordy can clean up rebounds, or when Obi gets doubled, be recipient of the pass, or keep the lane clear for Obi driving the lane with tomahawk dunks.

I could see some small ball with Obi as the center but that's just a guess on my part. A lot of versatility with the roster.

How many minutes can we expect Jordy to be able to play and maintain a high level of play? Obi's the next option, so I think the answer to that first question is where the difference of opinion lies.

I don't think it's much about Obi playing the 5. There will likely be times that neither team has a 5 on the court and there will likely be multiple guards or forwards.

Agree. I will be disappointed if we don't beat VCU and Davidson at home, Georgia, and St Mary's or Colorado. Taking the loss AT VCU, we should win at least three of the other five.

This team will be much deeper. The bulk of the minutes will not go any one or two players. Jordy will get playing time. Obi is not a true center as others pointed out.

There will be plenty of times that Obi is the biggest guy on the court for us. Call him a 5, call him a second 4, whatever.

Jordy will get 20ish minutes a game. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see him as a great asset offensively. He's a big man with a career FG% of 45% (I expect that from a guard, not a center) and a low FT % (dropped to 56% his sophomore year). That's not a guy you want on the floor the last few minutes of a game. He also averaged a foul every 6 minutes. That's a foul-out every 30. So let's assume he spends some time on the bench in foul trouble.

I think Chase can help out, but we need to be ready for Obi to play some major minutes as the biggest guy on the court for us. Call it whatever you like.

Jordy has had a year to clean that up - so I hope I'm wrong on this assessment.

Obi needs to learn to score from both on the blocks and while facing up. There will be times he's at the 4 and is looking to primarily score while facing up, there will be times he'll be at the 5 and doing the same thing, and there will be times he'll be he'll be at the 4 looking to score off the block and times he will be at the 5 looking to score off the block.

You can talk all you want about position-less basketball, but there are times every game where dudes are attempting to score down on the blocks with their back to the basket. There will be times he's the biggest dude on the court for UD, and their may be times he's the 3rd biggest dude (how big is Chase Johnson? or Sissoko and Jordy are on the court together). I suspect it will be an even split between being the biggest dud and playing next to Jordy and/or Sissoko. I doubt CAG is losing too much sleep about it, probably looks at the versatility that he should have next year as an asset. He will have lots of lineup types available to him.

I have been disappointed so often over the past half century I hesitate to voice optimism again. BUT gosh-darn it.....I AM OPTIMISTIC going into this season.
So optimistic that I think all the predictors picking us for a 3rd place conference finish have no idea how much impact our new faces will have this season.

I am predicting a regular season conference championship! VCU last year only beat us by 5 there and by 1 at our place. Davidson only beat us by one at their place. If the added talent and depth can't reverse all three of those results....than I will be disappointed. I think 25 wins (only 4 more than last season) should be very readily achievable, maybe a few more!

Color me VERY OPTIMISTIC!

Don: I think that everybody on this blog is feeling some very positive vibrations. Good, Good Vibrations! Unlike other seasons, this upcoming season is feeling very optimistic.

If Chase Johnson is forgiven and allowed to play at the start of the non-conference play then watch our fellow bloggers positive vibes increase. We, Dayton fans, could stand a good break after all that we have endured in the past.

Going on season 44 and this is the most optimistic I’ve ever been going in to a season that I can remember. There have been many a disappointment in the past so who knows. To me the proper balance of talent, culture and chemistry seem to be on campus and that can take this group a long long way if it’s actually as good as it appears.

To me it all starts with Obi but not with his talent but rather his attitude. When your best player is the exact opposite of an entitled primadona that can be very contagious. I’d say Jalen as the on court leader has much more of the same attitude.

Yes plenty of reason for high aspirations. Here’s to hoping this is only the start of what we all have been waiting for.

It was an intended joke as if Chase needed to be forgiven for wishing to transfer schools from Florida to Dayton. He is being punished for transferring.

I join many on this board in their excitement for the upcoming season. I'm not sure we'll have seen this much talent on the floor of the UD Arena in some time, if ever. I suspect the roster is so loaded right now that it's inhibiting recruiting.

That said, I am mildly concerned about the departure of Donnie Jones. I'm a big fan of AG, but I think there was a significant jump in the team's Xs and Os last season that I didn't see in the AG's previous season. You could find myriad convincing explanations, but I have to think a well-regarded (if dubious) veteran coach probably contributed quite a bit strategy-wise. My hope is we don't see a big drop off this coming season.

I think it bears watching, but either way I'm as excited about this season as any I can remember. Should be a fun one.

Coach Grant at this point is also a well-regarded and veteran coach. Just saying.
I think you will see even more improvement in X's and O's this season where there are actually fresh legs and lots of them to execute said X's and O's

Our X's and O's will look better simply because we have better players. You can draw up all kinds of nice things, but if the talent isn't there, it makes it a lot tougher to execute consistently.

Way tooo much pressure on Crutcher last year in last 5 seconds of shot clock and during big games.

This will look very different this year.

Color me Chatman and Ibi and positive!

I wouldn't be too concerned about that. The knock on Donnie Jones as a coach has been poor X's and O's.

Totally agree. That issue may solve itself when he sees more options on the court that can finish in the last few seconds. Sometimes it looked like Crutch would suspend the action so he HAD to take the last shot.

Big agree with SDF & 86

I look back to the end of George Mason game. They key in on Obi and Crutch has to force a shot

There's gonna be options this year on the offensive end. Watson & Chatman should be guys who score but most importantly get their own shots and create on the offensive end

Not only in the end of shot clock/game scenarios I think it's gonna make a lot harder for defenses to just key in on Obi

Having more dynamic playmakers like Chatman, Ibi, hopefully an improved Cohill stepping I think is gonna really change the complexion on the offensive side of the ball

Who will have the most points next year? It will be a fight for Obi to get his points as the other team keys on him. Will the fans be complaining Obi needs to score more? Is Obi that good of a player to beat the double teams on him?

Who will need to be told ... you need to score 20 points .. and if you don't have 20 then keep shooting?

Obi will need to score more this year ... to confirm to the pro teams ... he is advancing his skills. I think the rest of the team will be OK with that ... the rest of the team should all be back, but Mikesell, next year to get their points.

I think for Obi it's not about points, it's about showing skill development on the perimeter and overall with his game. The NBA doesn't care about a box score

Lack of depth kept starters and guys playing longer into blow outs

Do we really want Obi playing 35 minutes in a likely blow out against a Fordham or a North Florida? Putting up stats in the 2nd half against a Charleston Southern I don't think is gonna make a material difference in how the NBA looks at him

There's 8 home buy games against teams that if UD is as good as advertised they should win by comfortable margins. Throw in A10 games against Fordham, GW, St. Joes and whoever else is on the bottom of the conference and you've got 12-15 games on the schedule that UD should (not will) win comfortably

Street and Smith's

Street and Smith's picks Dayton to finish second, VCU first and Davidson third. They put VCU at number 24 in their top 25. They pick Xavier to finish fourth in their league.

Watching a Facebook live video of today’s practice it looked like the starters were Crutcher, Ibi, mikeselll, obi, and Jordy. Granted very grainy video and not sure when the video started.

This lineup makes the most sense at the start of season. We will see how everything shakes out but I like the lineup. Our bench will have some serious defensive firepower. Chatman, Matos, Cohill with Johnson's height and Landers effort.

I imagine Chatman is the first off the bench and Jordy is the first one out. It should be a fun season!

Good catch, Elite. That second five has total defensive shutdown written all over it, although Chase Johnson is obviously unproven at this level. And you're not even factoring in what Sissoko will contribute (which shouldn't be a ton considering freshman big, but we can hope).

This may be the first time I was optimistic pre-season and was NOT disappointed! While expecting at least 25 wins, and hoping for a few more, I would never have imagined that we'd reach 29 in the regular season! We did not lose a single game (for a change) to someone we had no business losing to. I have to credit this to the mentality that coach Grant somehow imparts to the team, to his eye for diamonds in the rough, and his ability to extract the best from his players. There is no coach in the country who came anywhere close to accomplishing what he accomplished with only one player rated higher than a 3-star (and that one was not a starter). I think if Anthony does not win COY, it will be a greater injustice than if Obi fails to win POY.
