This team does have some talent- if Svoboda breaks thru and Kostas keeps developing we can be successful. Landers is going to be a monster, Cunningham already is.

Richmond is awful so I'm not reading too much into it. We shot 67% from the field, 98% from the FT line and barely won. So much work to do but very happy they won.

If the light would come on for Svoboda, we would be so much better. But he struggled again tonight in limited minutes.

Yeah I was really worried that AG would forget how to coach in the 2nd half after remembering how so well in the 1st half.

Several times in the 2nd half he forgot how and Richmond got so close only to have AG remember how to coach again especially in the last few minutes.

BTW - talk about losing it, Mooney really has. He's now a horrible coach !

Yes, the below website tracks coaches on the hot seat, and then puts the coaches in different categories based upon how hot the coach's seat is.

CM is in the hottest category, the "YOUR CHAIR IS ON FIRE, SIR" category.

http://www.coachesdatabase.com/hot-seat-report/

Chris Mooney (Richmond)
Mooney has been at Richmond since 2005, leading the Spiders to the NCAA Tournament twice (including a trip to the 2011 Sweet Sixteen). The last 6+ seasons have not gone quite as well, as Mooney’s teams are 115-98 since that S16 appearance. However the main reason Mooney lands in this section is the abysmal 3-12 start to the current season. The Spiders are just 2-5 at home so far, with losses to Delaware and Bucknell among the five. Mooney got another year added to his contract this offseason (extended through 2021-22) and the school just hired a new AD in November – John P. Hardt from Bucknell – who may not want to make that kind of decision so early in his tenure. But if things don’t improve, a coaching change will be completely justified.

Good, short article on how the Spiders used to rule the town of Richmond, but now VCU is the big dog in the town of Richmond, and the Spiders are now in VCU's shadow.

I thought AG also utilized his TO's better. Didn't allow Flyers to "play through" Richmond's runs, instead calling a timeout to steady the ship.

Not only calling TOs to halt Richmondís runs, but also subbing guys in and out to help that cause. I felt the momentum swing back our way at the start of the 2nd half when AG called time and subbed Crosby in for Crutcher. Yes, Crutcher had 6 assists last night, but he also had 3 turnovers. Crosby had 0 turnovers, and was generally steadier running the point. A subtle but important difference in the past 2 games.

T-Bone, Radar, Marysville, TXflyer, et all

You all comment about how last nite was different or better than the previous game @ home.

But once again I think what we are seeing so far this season is that the team as a unit and specific individuals are UP or DOWN with no assignable cause except it is a different game, different day, etc.

Crosby has no TO one game and can't help but create a TO at critical moments in another. Crutcher comes in and does a great job, then again the next game 'stuff happens'. DD is fantastic then not so much. You could go down the list of players and find the same UPs and DOWNs.

I can understand it on the freshmen (although they are getting close to that point in the season they are no longer 'pure freshmen') but not on the players who have been here for some time (new coach or schemes notwithstanding).

Concerning the coaching I don't know what may or may not be going on there.

Hence this is the main reason I believe the level of frustration both the coach AND the Flyer Faithful have within us is so high!

Anyways glad for the WIN but my expectations for the next game is that I have no expectations. I'll just wait and see.

Offensive scheme is not a real issue. Its execution. We beat a team with 12 losses, scored 87 but gave up 81. For much of the game, Richmond had completely open three point shots against our zone. I'm not critical of the zone, I'm sure it's better than our man to man. The pass to the deep corner was always open and deep corner to middle was available but Richmond really didn't take advantage. Quite often when Richmond switched, Cunningham and Kostas were guarded by guys that looked under 6 foot. They still had 11 offensive rebounds to our 6.

Did anyone notice that in the final minutes of a then close game, Cunningham had the ball 25 feet from the basket with about 10 secs on clock?I hate to watch us with the ball and under 10 secs. Nothing good really happens.

It appears that J Davis and Williams are working their way to the back of the bench for a while. Wish Williams could catch some of Trey's energy. An active Williams could make a big difference. It is what it is.

W's and L's will ebb and flow with the PG play. Last night we got adequate play from the point and were able to win on the road (any road win regardless of whether or not it was Richmond is a good win). Against UMass we got very poor PG play and a L. Against the Bonnies we had pretty good play at the point and were able to beat a good team. How our PG's play is pretty much the determining factor in all W's and L's.

Yes they scored 81 and part of the problem was not doing a better job on their corner 3s but I contend our offense contributed a bunch to Richmond's scoring. How many wtf turnovers did we have where we basically handed them the ball for an assist on their basket.

Seeing the game in person last night, I saw great signs of good coaching. Grant has had a good effect on Williams, who is becoming a more complete player. Williams did not take a three and passed and rebounded and moved on defense. Maybe his best game this year.

Great call by Grant to try some full court and then man at the end, but our talent just can't do it on defense. Our offense is not a problem. Out defense and lack of rebounding position is a huge problem.

Great call by Grant to leave Trey and his high energy in almost the whole game. It rubs off on some of his teammates.

I bought tickets at exactly mid-court in the last row so I could watch the defensive rotation, and the offense attempts to get the ball inside.

The defensive rotations and movement on our zone looked like a cat chasing a laser dot. A day late and a dollar short most of the time. Richmond is not good and they shot 39% from three on continuous wide open shots in the corner and wing. The staff has to teach man and make the likes of Trey play it.

The passers looked inside a bunch last night. Two problems, no great post up players and our passers are too slow passing. Lots of telegraphed looks to the post and then a slow pass off target. There was some progress, but our guys have to learn to the point that they can make inside passes in split seconds. Our bigs have to post up better. Too many times Cunningham is rotating and not looking. Kostas posts up decently but turns his head away from the ball, so the guard rotates the ball. Williams was never taught by the last staff how to post up, and is clueless. Trey does a decent job of posting, but he is not tall so the pass has to be away from the defender, not high. Last night it was all about execution, which was rarely there for post ups.

Our penetration on dribble drive, led by Trey, was outstanding and the main reason we scored a bunch. DD was off shooting last night, or we would have scored 100. It was obvious from the lack of outside shot attempts by DD and Jordan and others that Grant has their ear (only 19 three attempts last night). Crutcher took two early shot clock threes, and is still on the short bus.

I noticed the same things watching the game on facebook last evening! The only time we go fast on offense is in transition. Usually our guards throw slow passes which are often telegraphed and create turnovers. Two examples were the first two entry passes for turnovers by Crutcher at the beginning of the second half! My sons soccer coach referred to them as "hospital" passes! They have no speed on them and are easy to steal! Same is true for basketball and soccer! Cunningham would often post up and be open but our guards have a split second to throw a swift entry pass for it to be successful. I agree with Jack, however, that Josh and Kostas need to post up better. With 10 seconds remaining on the shot clock Josh can't be 20 feet out on the perimeter. Agree that dribble drive by Trey was outstanding. Would like to see less three point attempts and more dribble drives by all our guards because they are all good free throw shooters and can get to the line! 93% as a team was great. AG deserves credit because even AM's teams weren't near that good from the line!

As for defense, whether it be zone or man to man, the description of a cat chasing a laser dot is right on! Jackson kept hitting wide open three pointers from the corner even when we had Kostas in the back of the zone because Kostas was always one step slow! We don't cheat or anticipate like we should! We waited till the pass was already thrown to the corner then moved when we should have been moving with the pass or better yet cutting it off to lead to a fast break. Easier said than done but we just need to be overall quicker!

In short, everyone needs to play like Trey has been lately! The only game where he wasn't himself was the UMass game! Others have been inconsistent from one game to the next!

If you have not been to the Richmond arena, it is top shelf. My third trip there, and I have to say the best place I have seen a basketball game. No bad seats, as it holds only 7,200 which are laid out equally around the court. They have very comfortable seats and space. The four humongous TV screens are overkill for that place, but very clear and nice. The acoustics are amazing. They spent the money to line the ceiling with acoustic tiles. My wife said at one point, who is that I hear talking all the time, as we were by ourselves in the last row opposite the scorer's table. It was the coaches and players on the bench. My hearing is below average and I could hear Grant barking instructions 50 yards away. The music blasts you out of your seat, but no distortion or echo. A clean and beautiful facility.

Two criticisms are no stats except scoring and fouls, and poor parking. It would be a great place to play the A10 Men's Tourney, but like the A10 Women they would probably play in the bigger, less nice downtown arena.

My post was typed with tongue planted firmly in cheek. I am quite tired of the constant AG coaching bashing using the talent and experience shortcomings of a depleted and young team as the 'proof'. Trey's foul with 3 seconds left is a perfect example of youth that has nothing to do with coaching. When we lose because of things like this it's always AG's fault.

The TO issue is another item that is tiresome. I personally believe that AG saves the time outs for the end of the game to allow Josh and Daryl well deserved rest near the end of the game since they often play 36+ minutes a game and AG needs them as fresh at the end as possible since they carry the offensive burden most games.

That may not be the reason but it is a logical explanation that the naysayers don't want to consider.

No one as far as I can tell is blaming AG for the players inexperience. The coaching problems that virtually everyone on here are pointing out are independent of the players talent level or experience

He even broke from the mold against Richmond early in the 2nd half. My wife yelled at the TV to call a timeout. I said he probably wouldn't because he only had 2 left. He ended up calling it to my surprise.

The first timeout in he took in the UMass game was with 1:44 left in the game and he still had two in his pocket at the end. Those guys could also use rest throughout the game to keep them fresh, so I don't see any logical reason to keep all your timeouts until under two minutes to keep guys fresh.

That just isn't true. The tiresome, emotional few are definitely doing just that. Most of the issues raised by them are likely caused to the immaturity and lack of experience this team has.

The last play in the UMASS game is a perfect example. 'That DD drive is the best AG can come up with?'. Forget the fact that they had Josh wide open and an inexperienced player did not execute the play when the opportunity presented itself.

The offensive and defensive schemes at AG's disposal are much a result of how well/quickly this group is learning, and more importantly executing things. Many argue the offense is too vanilla but with literally no player on this team capable of beating their man off the dribble with any consistency, skill and experience level limit coaching flexibility.

The same thing happens all the time with playing time. 'Why is JD on the bench for the last 14 minutes? ' As if AG forgot he was on the team.

Team doesn't shoot FTs well and AG must not be working on that enough in practice (even though team FT pct has to be higher this year than any year for AM ).

Young players and role players (XW) have brain farts, can have attitude/discipline/work ethic issues that the coach has to deal with, discipline around etc. that will affect the quality of play on the court and the results yet somehow a few think that is all the proof they need that AG was a horrible hire.

I'll say it again but AM's team of 2 years ago drastically under achieved and much of it IMHO was due to inward team strife between at least SS and CC. A coach can only do so much to deal with most of this kind of stuff. After that, it all falls on the players. This year AG is saddled with much more of the chemistry and adjustment realities. I respect him sitting guys even at the cost of hurting in the short term to set the long term tone for his team. Guys will either get it, adjust and fall in line or they will be gone.

Potential is not talent. Talent performs. Potential is all hope and hype. While I like him a lot, I have never seen XW as a player of great talent as some do. He has been a role player at best in years 1-2 aided by 4 really good options around him.

He hasn't been a creator of any offense but rather a recipient of open looks due to the ability of the other 4. He was the #4 - #5 option for most games last year. Some were expecting him to be all conference this year. Going from #4 to #1 or #2 is not as easy as coaching him up.

Go re-read your posts from early in Archie's tenure. These posts are tame in comparison.

I notice you didn't post any. I wasn't a fan of hiring another assistant, and I was a critic of the horrible D, which I have been with this team but I never ever came close to hinting AM should be fired. I was willing to give him 3 years.

The same posters who never show up after any win were already jumping on the fire AG band wagon before the season even
started. Yeah that sounds just like me.

I was cautiously optimistic and posted as such.

There isn't a fire AG bandwagon. Stop projecting. One can be critical of AG and not be calling for his fire, just like you were critical of AM. It's okay to have different opinions.

Archie's teams in 6 seasons and 200 games at UD scored 100 points 1x in 2015 beating #208 Fordham 101-77.

Forget the past; we have a new coach get behind him and stop complaining about everything the team does.

Amen to that

Wonder what % of Flyer fans that are anti AG on this board compare with those that don't belive this?

It seems like the same people are *****ing and moaning all the time.
I'm not talking about those questioning things he does but those agenda driven fools who hide behind their keyboard

We have won 3 of the last 4. Points scored: 82, 60, 87, 106. Our YTD Avg 74. Shooting %: 56, 43, 64. 63. Our YTD Avg 48%

Sounds like we have turned the offensive scheme corner. Sounds like inexperienced players getting some experience and a coaching staff getting through to the players. Whatever Grant is feeding DD and Landers this year, he needs to stockpile.

I attribute much of this to Trey. Not only for nice stat lines, but for being a leader.

It was Oliver, then Kyle, then unsure... For a moment.

It's Trey!
