Yep always a good idea but I'd be SHOCKED if he went anywhere but UD......Always watch the last visit so close to the decision date plus with everything else going positive with UD including their love for this kid for 2-3 years and the coaching cluster seemingly happening at Minny and his decision is already made, imho..

Hope still springs eternal that Archie and his coaching staff go for a positional recruit. I am voting for a second center on this team. Archie took a risk. Instead of taking a second center, he took Trey Landers. I understand the catch-22 dilemma. Do we take the best available player or do we fill out the class and/or the depth at the positions. With no succession plan at center, we are now facing another year with no center on this team. I suspect that we will be playing two forwards and three guards most of the time. I suspect that 6'7" Cunningham will be our tallest player on the floor, most of the minutes. We'll sub in Sam Miller, Xeryius Williams and Kostas intermittently. But, essentially, we will be small ball this year. If we do not take a second center for next year then we will be one flu-like sniffle or one turned ankle away from small ball next year. I would rather go for a transfer for this year, a transfer for next year or a recruit fir next year who can play center.
Given the above, we better be real good at boxing out for rebounds and really good at running the floor for break-away baskets.

I found this article today.
The injury was very serious, but big schools are recruiting. X seems to be recruiting him hard.

IMO you're confusing "small ball" with "no true center". Those aren't the same thing. When your starting center is 6'6", your PF is 6'5", and your backup is 6'4", yes, that's small ball. But when your starting center is 6'7", your PF is 6'6", and you have 2 guys coming off the bench at 6'9"+, and 2 more guys coming off the bench at 6'7" and 6'8", that's something different.
I would call it smaller ER ball but I don't consider it small ball, particularly if Sam plays 20 minutes per game off the bench. We'll match up just fine with nearly anyone we play.

Josh can rebound like a 5. He has traits similar to Xavier McDaniel and Dennis Rodman. He reads the carom off the board, has great anticipation, and positioning. Josh, Charles, and Kendall, coupled with whoever we put at the 5, will allow us to own the boards.

Just look at how the recruiting continues to "grow". Big Steve (RIP), Kostas the Greek, Jordan Pierce, even the guards Landers & Davis are 6'4".
Landers, Davis, & Pierce....sounds like a law firm.

Any news on how McKinley's visit is going this weekend? I know I know, if I had pride plus I would probably have my answer. I will get around to it. In the mean time, any news?

Actually, you'd be wrong. All is quiet on that front. You know what we do. All i know is he's deciding the 15th. I am hearing Minnesota has switched their PG target if twitter and our posters are to be believed. Thats a good sign. Do you what his visit days were? Fri-Sun?

So, Davis, Pierce, hopefully Wright, and? One more would be nice (with 5 spots open). Who is the number one remaining target?

Sean Mobley, 6-9 forward, supposedly had a visit scheduled. Don't know if he did or if it's down the road. Stiff P5 (and VCU) competition for him, though.

Well, what can you say? If you snooze you lose. If these other players want to be Flyers, then they should commit before some other player, who also has an offer, maybe takes their spot. If they wait too long, then they are rolling the dice.

4 years ago Kyle Davis committed and as a result took the spot of another SG who had UD in his final list. Do you know who that other SG was? EC Matthews. Now while I love KD, no doubt EM is the better player.
Point being, I think the coaches need to gamble a bit. They want to pressure the kids to commit while in town so they cn get someone versus no one, but if the better player is coming in a few weeks, wait.
This is happening now with Darryl Morsell. 4 star SG. Final schools Maryland, Nova, VaTech, ND and ...us. Some sites have him in top 60 and rising. Apparently he has a great relationship with UD staff. He scheduled his visit with us last. Oct 23 weekend - the red and blue game I don't think that's a coincidence. I think he wants to go to UD and the staff wants him, hence the scheduled visit last, and on a big weekend for the program. If youre AM, how do you handle the recruiting of guys like Keith Williams and Anthony Gaines if they're on campus first? How do you balance waiting for the decision of DM versus for sure getting your number 2 guy? And same thing with 4 star Tyler Polley who has us in his final 5 along with Uconn, Tennessee, OkSU and Pitt. That's why he gets paid the big bucks I guess

You Must Be Kidding
E.C Matthews gets more publicity than Kyle Davis because he is the better offensive player.
Kyle Davis is far better than Matthews in terms of team achievement than E.C. Matthews. That is because he is probably the greatest defender in the history of UD Men's hoops. Check out Matthews vs. K. Davis in match-ups. Further, K.Davis has had several moments where he led the offense in clutch game-winning, momentum gaining situations with his drives and scores at the rim. I was in Puerto Rico where he was the reason UD stayed close enough to beat a very good Texas A&M team on a stick back by a former Flyer team mate. Raise your game as a fan and watch both ends of the floor.

I think you go a bit far, particularly when you start pointing to individual games--who's to say it would not have been a 30 point blowout with ECM and no heroics would have been needed?? But, the point is still the same. KD rounds out a team very well and is highly valuable. ECM shoots a lot and scores a lot of points. I think we did just fine with our selection.
Maybe if we get ECM we pick up another player to round out the team with a high defensive motor in another class. You can't cherry pick these things, it's all a balance.

Personally, I love Kyle Davis and would NEVER trade him for EC Matthews. Partly will be because I haven't seen EC enough, but partly because Kyle has become Big Moment Kyle. Close game, under 4 minutes, Flyers appear like they could be going down, the crowd is getting antsy.....and suddenly Kyle makes back to back steals leading to back to back fast breaks, or he hits a completely unexpected 3, causing the roof to be blown off. These are NOT unusual occurrences. Where I sit, we simply call them Kyle Moments. We expect them anymore. Lady that sits in front of me and had very rarely said anything in her many years in front of me even turned around near the end of a very close game last year and said "it's Kyle time", and immediately after she said it he had the steal leading to the fast break that led to the victory. Kyle moments....they are always special.
And I don't see EC Matthews shutting down the dude from Providence...Kris Dunn? That was amazing!
As for should Archie wait...obviously I'm not in the know, but I can imagine many things in play here. For all we know, Kyle was Archie's 1st choice over EC, possibly thought Kyle fit the style he wanted better, or truly thought Kyle was better overall. Or somehow Archie learned EC preferred URI and Archie grabbed his 2nd choice in Kyle because he didn't want to wait on EC and take a chance of getting neither. Whatever the reason, I'm sure Archie was very happy Kyle said yes, or he would have never offered him.
As for the current situation, if Morsell is THE top priority, Archie will find a way to wait until he visits before offering any others, or at least not accepting right away (however that whole game works). However, I also believe Archie will be very happy getting Keith or Anthony, or else he would have stopped recruiting them.
And don't forget, stars don't mean everything. Would have hated passing on a certain #2 that is now in the NBA just because he was only rated 2 stars.....

There was an article about the current Buffalo (I think) coach sometime last season, he was the lead recruit and assistant at Rhody when they recruited EC. The article indicated that he had ties to EC back from his Detroit days, I know Swampy had mentioned the coach and had some knowledge of him about the time of the article. Anyhoo, while the article was about the coach, and not EC, therefore it didn't delve too deeply into the recruitment of EC, the article certainly gave the impression that EC was likely heading to Rhody no matter what. because of the relationship he had w/ the Rhody assistant at the time.

It would be interesting to read Gopher-talk right now. Anyone know if there is a UDPride wannabee site over there in Gopher land?

Gopher Basketball Talk
There is a thread on Wright and another on Isiah Washington.
http://www.forums.gopherhole.com/boa...sketball-forum
From the Gopher site: "I felt like Wright was going to announce for Dayton which would be an unprecedented recruiting loss for the Gophers in the time I've followed recruiting closely (almost 20 years). The only kids I can remember that a coaching staff at the U prioritized that went to non Blue Bloods were Reid Travis, Rashad Vaughn, and Lawrence McKenzie...and none of them chose a school like Dayton. Obviously, the Travis/Vaughn recruitments were right when Pitino got the job."

I guess in the mind of this Gopher poster, the Flyers have yet to turn the corner into a perennial basketball-only power. Xavier & Butler seemingly did, straight into the Big East. Even VCU may have more cachet than UD, from their Final Four run.
I think some disrespect will provide focus and motivation. We backed into a share of the A-10 last year and flopped against a tough NCAA draw. Should be an exciting run with our senior-laden 2016-17 squad.

I hope we get Wright, so hate posting this -- the announcement today is by both Wright his high school teammate John Theo together. Both were being recruited by Minn. plus wright retweeted a post by Minnesota recruit Isaiah Washington this am. And all that might mean nothing. Let's hope it's Dayton for Wright.

Best of all time? Except last year when his teammate CC won best defender on the team.
Look, my post was to spark some conversation on how the staff weighs "getting a guy" versus "getting the top guy". If DM is the top guy, do they gamble on him or accept the verbal commit of a player that may be on campus before?
I'm not bashing KD. Never said he wasn't a great defender. Never said I'm upset we have him. I'm glad we have him. Sure he played great D against Dunn. Hit a game winner against Miami last year. Played great in PR. But who's to say if we had EC in 2014 we aren't in the final 4? Or beat Providence AND Oklahoma? Or beat A&M by 20 in PR? As another poster said, we don't know how things would've turned out had KD not committed; we may be better, may be worse. EC is a great defender with a 6'7 wingspan. It's a hypothetical argument at best so I'll leave it at that.
But you can't honestly tell me, 4 years ago had you known one is being discussed as an NBA lottery pick you wouldn't rather have him.
If we had a crystal ball and saw Darrly Morsell will be a top 15 NBA pick in 2021, and 'player b' is destined for Europe....today, who you takin'? that's my point.
On an unrelated note, crazy to think that we were deep with Dillon Brooks at one point too. Can you imagine had we landed him?

24/7 crystal ball likes Theo John declaring for Marquette. Better choice, IMHO

this article speculates mckinley to the Flyers
http://www.startribune.com/champlin-...tte/393197101/
could be a 1-2 kick in the crotch for coach pitino ... have to wait until 6pm ET!
adding to the intrigue, UM supposedly only has two 'ships for 2017. If Wright & John both commit, will they push someone out the door?
http://www.thedailygopher.com/2016/9...iah-washington
it's funny how inexact these recruiting services are. KP wasn't even rated in 2013
http://dayton.247sports.com/Season/2...etball/Commits
Kostas is our #3 all-time recruit since 1999, behind Chris Wright & the PG who shant be named. Devin Oliver #24, vastly underrated. Like Gazoo said, it's more about fit & balance.

I read it on Twitter earlier then just looked it up again. With the Isaiah Washington commitment, that leaves just 1 open ship for Minn. It's impossible for them to both say yes without Minnesota causing a storm.

Teams over-signing is not uncommon. We didn't have any scholarships available when Crosby verbaled to us and we over-signed that year. Things work themselves out.

When Pitino is fired, some guys are sure to bail. So it is probably a good idea for them to sign a few extra.

I'm only about 20 minutes from where he is announcing. Really wish I was able to get my Flyer garb on go support him. Unfortunately I have a funeral to attend - not something I can skip.
Of course - it would be super embarrassing for a 35 year old to walk into a high school dressed in Dayton Flyer stuff - only for Wright to choose Minnesota. Probably best I'm not there...
I just can't see him picking the Gophers...

I have always felt that the 3 Minnesota players were never held accountable for what happened that night. Held kind of a grudge through all these years. Winfield and Behagan had pretty successful careers, but I never knew what happened to Corky Taylor. So I googled it… and found this very touching 4 year old article….. very insightful… RIP

Interesting how 4 star Darryl Morsell is following us. Do we dare hope? The experts are all predicting he goes with Maryland…. BUT we have Archie and his fine coaching staff, we offered before MD, his OV on 10/21 is after his MD visit, and Darryl was here last June so it must have made a good impression on him such that he’s returning a 2nd time. We’re so different than MD that we make a distinct & perhaps a very attractive alternative.

If Morsell doesn't commit while he's at Maryland, we have a good shot.

I have been following the recruiting of DM for a couple months now pretty closely. I don't know why I have a good feeling about him, but I do. Largely I think it's because he was ranked 110+ a year ago and is now top 60 on many sites. Late bloomer, hard worker, underrated -- seems like the kid we can really get behind. He has been "following us" because AM and his staff have been "following him" for awhile. It's a good sign IMO. Any kids we land will be his future teammates for 4 years. So to say we are putting together a mob, is great!
Also, the "experts" (at least on 247) consist of just 3 people right now -- 2 of which are MD basketball writers. So I'd hope they'd be picking MD. Take that with a huge grain of salt.
Second, an article came out last week discussing the different schools recruiting him - MD, VaTech, UD, ND and Nova. Interestingly, UD is the only school of those 5 that currently isn't doing an in-home visit. Can we read into that? I don't know. Does AM think we are out and an in-home visit is a waste of time? Does AM feel we are in and it's a waste of time? UD was one of the first schools on him, so if the only point is to talk anout vision and build rapport, presumably AM has done that. MD took their team bus to his house on his in home visit-they put on a big spectacle. Can you see AM doing that? I can't. I would bet if you asked AM about putting on a big show like that, he would ask how does that make him a better basketball player and student athlete?
DM said MD biggest pitch is the ability for him to play close to home. He said that has been their biggest angle. So if that's what he wants to do, be the 'home town' kid, then no one can compete.
DM said Novas staff was on him late and they're still building rapport. Obviously they won the championship last year and have tremendous history, but may be late to the dance.
DM said VaTech and coach Buzz Williams is "one of a kind". He seems to be intrigued by the style and energy they bring.
DM said ND staff has an assistant from his high school, which is how it all started. He's still getting to know staff and has never been to campus, so he's excited to see what it is all about.
Then there's us. I like our chances. He scheduled his OV with us last (still has yet to schedule an OV with VaTech) and scheduled during blue and red game weekend. He has said he will commit when it feels right -- could be this weekend, next month, February. If we can make it to Oct 22 and he's still available, then I love our chances!

Good post. Just to add a quick note-- he's recently said he won't make any decisions until he's made all of his visits and then wait a bit to think it all through. He continued to reiterate that he wouldn't make a decision until the Spring period.

As a heads up, according to a Scout article with Darryl Morsell posted Monday, when asked when he will make a decision:
"I don't know when it will happen. I just feel like when the time is right I will try to make the best decision for me. It could be this weekend or January or February. Whenever the time is right I will make my decision."
That's why I stated I like our chances if we can make it to October 22 with him still uncommitted.

Depends on what Archie wants. He can tell a recruit they have to see what happens. Or he take who is willing to sign first.

Also, we have two scholarships left. No way would a top wing want to join on after we get verbals from two other wings though... In other words, if Gaines decides UD is for him, he'll be a Flyer and Morsell won't. All the guys who are supposed to visit in the next few weeks are good enough that we would take their verbals on the spot. They are all too good to tell to wait unless the staff is 100% confident in Morsell (which is exceedingly unlikely).

Let's say that UD has 1 spot left and Moresell is their #1 target. If there are official visits before his then those become non-committable 'offers' if they feel Moresell is a 'hard lean' to UD. This has been all spelled out in advance to those recruits involved. The scenario often plays out by the school over-signing their allotment of scholarships and banking on attrition and/or 'processing' of the 'excess player' to get them under the limit.

In the A10 you can't have too many guards. And with a very narrow market for bigs, extra wings are a blessing. Our style is to have 5 guys who can run the floor, make the extra pass, and finish. So my leanings would be if you are a competitor, you don't shy away from another pg or wing that is about to be signed up. You relish the competition, and the added team strength as well.
I doubt John Crosby has even a hint of concern about Wright being recruited. John is going to show tremendous improvement this season and his attitude will be ---bring it on, and not where could I transfer to. And John is a big tough dude. McKinley and Crosby will make each other better.
We are not operating in the same arena as Kentucky who has their choice of a number of 4 and 5 star one-n-done pg's, wings, 5's.
Spirited competition is the life blood of a really good team. If that bothers a recruit, let him go somewhere else. (This is the part that Staten never could deal with at UD--he wanted to be assured of the position).

...and until Archie came along and established his success, we could never be discussing these types of recruits and their subsequent development!

The article I read was from Rivals posted yesterday morning. Sounds like he's flip flopping if he said the other thing as recently as Monday and then the other yesterday.

Based upon other visitors and Morsell's visits it looks unlikely that he will be a Flyer but Anthony is a heck of a player too. We might be celebrating a little earlier.

If you watch the you tube videos of both Anthony Gaines and Keith Williams they are both outstanding talents. We can't miss with either one as they can both play at a high level.
They like to play above the rim and dunk every chance that the opportunity presents itself.
I know that mixtapes just show the best of the best highlights but there are videos of the Nike Peach Jam etc. that show both players raining three's and generally dunking over anybody and everybody!
Darryl Morsell would be a great get but the above two wings are good as well.

Do we have 1 or 2 scholly's left?
If we have 2, I know it's unlikely that we get two of the remaining wing players, but it is a possibility. Also, I feel like Arch prefers to hold one for potential transfers. But Morsell and Gaines/Williams would be cool.
I was thinking we only had one, but can't remember if Wherli was on scholarship last year or not.
